A Tale of the Top and Bottom
With West Ham's demolition of Spurs' title hopes yesterday, the race for the Premier League title is just about done and dusted now. So, the focus this weekend is for Champions League places and for league survival. It all starts with Citeh hosting Palace. That's followed by the 10am kickoffs, including Hull v. Sunderland. Relegation threatened Swansea then kick off against Everton in the late one. Join me for all the fun and games this morning, won't you?

Morning Bob
COME ON U PALACE
Eagles, Eagles, Eagles
Good morning, Bob. Up early for the penultimate time this season where this and the late match may be the most interesting matches of the day
Good morning, UWS. Becky in disguise, LOL?
Citeh start this one in rubbish form, just about hanging on to their crucial fourth Champions League slot, a point against their city rivals United, having one only two of their last five matches.
Palace are in even worse form, having last their last two and still hovering too close to the drop zone for Fat Sam's comfort.
Then I scroll down and see the post from yesterday
Morning, chaps! How are you?
The team news out of the Etihad and was prepare to get started:
Manchester City: Caballero, Fernandinho, Kompany, Otamendi, Sterling, Toure, Silva, Clichy, De Bruyne, Gabriel Jesus, Sane.
Subs: Sagna, Zabaleta, Fernando, Kolarov, Jesus Navas, Gunn, Iheanacho.
Crystal Palace: Hennessey, Ward, Kelly, Van Aanholt, Schlupp, McArthur, Milivojevic, Puncheon, Zaha, Christian Benteke, Townsend.
Subs: Speroni, Flamini, Remy, Campbell, Lee, Sako, Delaney.
Referee: Michael Oliver (Northumberland).
They're off from the Etihad.
Great , Thanks for asking. A little weary after a long week at the business end of the school year. How about Bob and Dave?
I can't remember a season lasting this long before. In years past, we'd have been enjoying Cup Final Saturday today with the Premier League just about done. This season, there is a full schedule on Sunday, May 21!
If both the Tigers and Sans win with Palace losing then the relegation race gets really interesting with perhaps 40 points needed this year.
Ruddy Norah... that didn't take long
One Nil City
Awful defending
GOAL! Well, that didn't take long. Sorry, chaps. David Silva is back in the team and back on the scoresheet.
GOAL !!!! SILVA GIVES CITEH THE LEAD WITH A TAP , BUT A GREAT TEAM GOAL
Fat Sam will be livid about that Palace defending.
Former Pool defender, MArtin Kelly, off to an awful start. The poor defensive header from the Sterling cross gifted Silva a goal then fouling Jesus on a Citeh break.
There could be a Silva lining for both Citeh and the Tigers today.
By the way, chaps. Happy Naked Gardening Day!
It'll be a big day around The Cottage. Do you have any projects in mind for the afternoon? ;-)
Fred is asleep on my desk w, lying on his back. How is that any different than the Black Cats have been this season?
Wishing you well on your Spring project. My main project will be grocery shopping after the late match
Milovojevic heads out for a Citeh corner.
De Bruyne tries a spectacular volley from a narrow angle.
A long range effort from Fernandinho is straight to Hennessey
I was hoping Palace would do something here
I still think they're capable of getting back into this one.
Agreed. This is how they started at Anfield. Kind of Spursy.
WOW !!!! Citeh have 83% possession. That's like England vs San Marino.
Kelly redeemed himself, tracking back to cut out that cross. All Citeh so far, though.
Fernandinho wins a corner off of MArtin Kelly after all that possession.
JESUS! That was quite a break before he fluffed his lines as he was about to shoot.
How direct is Jesus? He looks as if he wants to take on the entire Palace defense at pace every time he touches the ball.
Interesting effort from Sane - probably reached the second tier.
I missed the effort from Sane because I was getting a free refill.
Boring Boring Citeh!
Zaha tackles Silva for a Citeh. That says everything if the winger is defending near his corner flag.
What are Palace playing at today?
Not sure. They have a noon kickoff vs the Tigers on Mummy's Day, which may be one of the key matches of the season.
Will Hartlepool or Newport go down with Orient today?
Hartlepool play at home BUT to a team that wants to win the League. They have to win and Newport lose to Notts County
Offside called after Hennessey fumbled a deflected effort from Silva.
Silva works it onto his favored left foot but his shot is deflected into Hennessy's hands. Great return for the Spaniard so far.
I think Jeff will need to get ready for life in the Conference because Alan Smith's lads are safe in mid table waiting for the season to end.
Just a reminder that the L2 matches will be played at the same time as the late Prem match/
Hennessey pushes away a near post deflected effort from Sane.
Just a reminder that the Championship matches will be a noon kickoff tomorrow. I will be getting some extra kip. Will it be Forest , Blackburn , or Reddy's lads joining Wigan and Rotherham in L1?
Kompnay booked for a body check on Zaha on a rare Palace attack.
Yeah - I saw that. Not that Leeds have much at stake any more. We'd need about a 25 goal turnaround with Fulham.
Hennessey with another near post save from Sane off a pass from De Bruyne.
Willy makes a great save from a Beneteke header off a cross from Townsend with Palace's first shot on target.
Perhaps Kate can score thirty OGS at Hillsborough to help the cause.
Come on Palace
That would help - I'll ask her.
SEVEN teams battling for the remaining two playoff spots in L2. Two East Anglian teams in the race . Cambridge travel to London Central , who are also one of the seven teams while Colchester host Yeovil, who have already clinched safety. Advantage Tangerines, who host the doomed Orient Express.
What is Becky thinking?
Palace might still be in this one.
Tomorrow's scores
Sheffield Wednesday 7 Fulham 0
Wigan 0 Leeds 7
You're in!
Well in, Bob. Anything is possible. Lucky sevens will do it, UWS.
Zaha with a stupid push on Fernandinho. he deserves more than just a lecture.
A minute of stoppage time.
USeless free kick from De Bruyne.
Citeh are only one up at the half vs Palace despite utter domination by Citeh. They scored early , but have not scored since.
Michael Oliver brings the first half to a close. Citeh took an early lead but weren't able to capitalize on it. Palace are still in this one at the interval. Back in a tick.
Half time
City doing their best United impersonation
Should have been four up but only one...now just like United... blow the lead please
Aldershot go 1-2 up at Tranny in a Conference playoff semi, now trailing 4-2 on agg. Is the comeback on?
Jim Beglin and Pete Dreary get the second half underway.
Silva well wide from a really narrow angle.
GOAL !!! CITEH GO TWO UP WITH A CRACKING SHOT IN THE UPPER 90 FROM KOMPANY, OF ALL PEOPLE.
Vincent Kompany is back! Citeh are 2-0 up. Sorry, chaps.
A poo Citeh corner was poorly cleared to Silva, who played De Bruyne down the right. He passed across the box to his international teammate, Kompany, who scored with a cracking finish
Citeh now have two consecutive corners as a header from Kompany fails to find the target this time.
Milvoy booked for a foul on De Bruyne just outside the Palace box.
Hennessey does well to tip over a pile driver of a free kick from De Bruyne. No, it's a goal kick.
Hennessey beats away a powerful shot from Ferandinho that was straight at him.
Nocito trip to loo strikes again!
Early goals in both hands... do Palace know when the kick off is?
Fat Sam makes a change is Lee Chong Yung is on for Andros.
Hennessey saves well from Sane then De Bruyne has the rebound deflected for a corner.
Welcome back., UWS. You missed a rare goal from Bad Kompany.
I am going to have to miss the rest of the match
I have to go see some people about a carpet!!
Three nil
Game over anyway
GOAL! Ginger Winger adds a third with a raking drive and this one is done and dusted.
3-0!
GOAL !!! DE BRUYNE PUTS CITEH THREE UP.
It started with a Palace long throw deep in their own half. After some hgeadd tennis , Sane passed to De Bruyne, whose first time effort landed in the corner from just outside box.
Cheers, UWS. Have fun on a magic carpet ride.
Yaya wins a Citeh free kick
Like for like as Flamini is on for Milovojevic, who is on a yellow.
A standing ovation for David Silva as he's replaced by Zaba. A defensive move by Pep with Citeh three up.
Some alphabet soup as Zaha wins a corner off of Zaba . palace's first of the match.
David Silva has had a brilliant return and he's run his course now.
Willy Cabs does well to tip over a long range deflected effort from Flamini for another Palace corner.
Zaha has a shot deflected off of Sane for another Palace corner.
I can't believe that there are still 15 minutes left in this one!
The final roll of the dice from Fat Sam and like for like as Damian Delaney is on for Martin Kelly. What's the point of that?
Mark Bright looking anything but that with a dreadful Palace performance.
Late and a tad naughty by Sane on Joe Ward.
Palace will be temporarily down a man as Ward has a bloody nose off the challenge.
Jim Beglin not exactly a master pundit as he states that he hopes Joe Ward doesn't end up in a hospital ward. Rather dreadful.
GOAL!!! CITEH GOP FOUR UP WITH A STERLING FINISH FROM STERLING
GOAL! Raheem Sterling adds a fourth. Great team goal there.
4-0!
Joe Ward had just come back on to the pitch to make it 11 vs 11, but it didn't make a difference as Zaba headed on a long diagonal pass to Sterling, who scored with a well placed shot.
The final rolls of the dice from Pep as Ihenacho is on for Jesus and Navas for Sane.
UWS missed one goal while on the bog and one while on a magic carpet ride.
Nessie defeats George Hamilton Academical. Nessie remain bottom, but are now four points behind Motherwell and Hamilton is it's anything but academical with three matches remaining for Callie and Academical and four for Well.
Delaney booked for a trip on Sterling , who was off to the races.
5-0! Otamendi adds a fifth!!!
They are laying down a marker here today.
GOAL !!!! OTAMENDI HEADS IN THE FREE KICK TO PUT CITEH FIVE UP OFF A FREE KICK FROM DE BRUYNE.
Fat Sam will be rattling the tea cups in the dressing after this drubbing. He does not like to lose in this manner. Palace have put themselves squarely back in the relegation fight now, with Hull and Swansea to play later today.
That's it - I'm off to do a few chores before the 10am kickoffs.
It's over at the Etihad as Citeh thrash Palace 5-0.
Off to take Sparky walkies on an unusually pleasant May morning in these parts.
I'm back for the ten o'clockers but doing thing around the house
Back from walkies as it was starting to get a bit warm at the end . Fairly good timing.
I'm back from the chores. Fat Sam is licking his wounds. They're just about safe on 38 points but not quite. Three losses on the trot has dropped Palace back into it.
What's on the menu? :
The Tigers vs the Black Cats on NBCSN
The Foxes vs the Hornets on CNBC
Burnley vs the Bggies and the Cherries vs the Potters on Extra time.
The appetizer was Citeh vs Palace with the swans vs the Toffees for dessert
I'll be watching the Hull v. Sunderland match, which has the most at stake. Here's the team news:
Hull (4-4-2) Jakupovic; Elmohamady, Ranocchia, Maguire, Robertson; Markovic, N’Diaye, Clucas, Grosicki; Hernandez, Niasse.
Sunderland (4-3-3) Pickford; Jones, Kone, O’Shea, Manquillo; Ndong, Denayer, Honeyman; Borini, Defoe, Anichebe.
When Fat Sam ordered off the menu he got food poisoning. Fat Sam looking for help from Fat Ron.
Rumors that Pickford could be joining the Toffees this summer.
Jim Proudfoot and Matt Holland on the mics this afternoon, as we get underway at the KC Stadium.
They're off from the KC and then from the KP
It’s spandex-tight in the lower-middle of the Premier League, with the chance for some smaller and/or newly promoted teams to finish in the top half. Burnley, for example, are in 15th place but could be ninth by 5pm.
Interesting stat from the Guardian: If you compiled a form table from New Year’s Day, Crystal Palace, Hull and Swansea - the teams battling to avoid the last relegation spot - would all be between ninth and 11th. One of those teams will feel pretty aggrieved come the final day of the season.
Honeyman heads just wide for the Black Cats off a cross from Billy Jones.
First decent chance for Sunderland - Honeyman just heading wide of the mark.
Agreed, mate. Great job of being a statto. We will have a better idea in a few hours . A week from tomorrow two of those three meet as Palace host the Tigers in a noon kickoff.
Fred surprised to hear Honeyman is starting because the season has been more like vinegar. I explained that already relegated teams sometimes give youngsters a chance,.
Stoke are at Bournemouth today. They haven't scored an away goal in 10 hours! Cor!
A Tigers counter led by Markovic is stopped by a Deneyer
I can't believe that there are still two weeks left of the season!
The Potters have been dreadful since being at 40 points.
No goals so far, but Sunderland have started extremely well away to Hull. Leicester’s early dominance of Watford is less surprising.
Bayern take the lead vs doomed Darmstadt.
Agreed. The season has gone by quite rapidly.
Fred is more concerned about the disruption caused by the roof replacement next door.
Stoke might have taken the lead at Bournemouth, had Marko Arnautovic not just shot tamely at Artur Boruc.
I'm sure - dogs don't like change. Or loud noises.
Cats, that is.
That's typical of the Potters current form
Actually both. Sparky is now standing next to me , peering out the window.
Clever Boy called for a trip on Mahrez while the Black Cats win their first corner of the match
Honeyman wins a free kick off of MArkovic. Seemed kind of soft.
The Tigers get away with it as the free kick is whipped in and a misunderstanding between Jakupovic and Rinocchia.
Pickford does well to save a shot from Clucas from just outside the box after a cross was headed away
Oh - Maguire is inches wide with his blast.
Pickford would be a good pick up for Everton.
Harry Maguire shoots just wide of the near post, but Pickford appeared to have ti covered as the Tigers start to take control
Adrian Mariappa is denied by the woodwork at the King Power Stadium, although he’s probably quite happy about that: it was the woodwork of his own team’s goal.
Agreed. Joel and Stecks between the Sticks have not really made the position their own.
The Hornets have looked the better team at the KP in this dead rubber match
Then a great cross by Fuchs is nearly turned in for an OG by Kabesele but for a spectacular save by Gomes Addams.
Nasty from Clucas there - 9th yellow card of the season.
Match of the Day is in trouble again - no goals in the four 10am kickoffs. At least they have that Citeh goalfest to show.
Kasper does well to block a close range effort from Capoue
Now it's Grosicki into the book.
The Potters end their goal drought with a goal at the Vitality scored by OG.
I am back from an aborted walkies with Shadow... Got around two corners and it started to rain again... got home just before the heavens opened
Stop the presses... a goal in the Premier League... two crappy Saturdays on a trot
Grosicki win the Tigers first corner of the match
Stoke have scored an away goal! Well, Lys Mouseet has put one in his own net to help them out. First one in 10 hours!!
Kasper does well to save a long range rocket from Clever Boy then the Foxes have a free kick at the opposite end of the pitch
The free kick from Mahrez is off the wall for a corner.
GOAL !!!! NDIDI GIVES THE FOXES THE LEAD OFF THE CORNER.
The corner was taken short to the thirsty Danny Drinkwater. His cross resulted in a poor defensive header to Ndidi , who smashed home from close range.
Welcome back, UWS. A shame that Shadow is not in sunny Harlingen. You did bring us a goal.
I agree with you, mate. Creating these marquee matches on Friday nights, Sundays mornings and the like has robbed the 3pm Saturday slot of quality.
Nearly a second for the Foxes as a shot from Mahrez deflects off of Clever Boy and then the top of the bar for a Foxes corner.
Raining here, too. It's put a damper on the World Naked Gardening Day festivities at The Cottage.
Can we please relegate both of these sides? They are pants.
I really don't like what has happened to my sport
All the games seem to be the same
Both teams trying to keep possession and creating very little
A minute of stoppage time at both the KC and KP.
The crossing is a completely a lost art
I was watching some you tube of Barnes for Liverpool who put in great crosses.. they all resulted in goals
The Foxes are one up at the half vs the Hornets as are the Potters at the Cherries. The other two matches are 0-0 at the half.
0-0 at half-time (sigh)
Off to plan an exciting lunch.
What's on the menu, mate? I guess lunch time is around the end of the 10 AM matches.
The second halves of some dreadful matches are underway.
Gomes Addams does well to save from Vardy after being put through by Okozaki.
Jakupovic with a great save by Dafoe off a really long Black Cats clearance.
N'Daye misses a sitter for the Tigers st the fasr post after Pickford flapped at a cross from Grosicki. A rare error by Pickford
Celtic take the lead vs St, Johnny in the first goal of the three 10 AM SPL matches.
Back from an exciting lunch, which I needed to get through this one. Still 0-0. Hull really need three points.
St. Johnny ties it up at Celtic Park where the only goals of the 10 am spl MATCHES HAVE BEEN SCORED.
Pickford does well to tip over a header from Markovic off a cross by former Black Cat. El Mohammedy
Welcome back, mate.Hopefully , lunch was tastier than any of these 10 AM matches.
GOAL !!! THE FOXES GO TWO UP VS THE HORNETS
Mariappa misjudged a long clearance by Kasper headed on by Vardy. Mahrez got a back pass from MAriappa and scored with a well placed shot past the stranded Gomes Addams, making Mariappa fell like Lurch.
Hernandez has a shot superbly blocked for a corner by O'Shea after a run and pass by Andy Robertson.
Burnley take the lead vs the Baggies.
Fatty on for the injured Markovic so he can throw his weight around in the middle of the pitch
Crocodile Dundee takes the lead at Killie while Celtic take a 2-1 lead vs St. Johnny
The Cherries tie it up vs the Potters
Junior Stanislaus with the goal for the Cherries.
The Baggies tie it up at the Hawthorns.
GOAL! Billy Jones has scored for Sunderland. A real problem for Hull now!
GOAL !!! BILLY JONES GIVES THE BLACK CATS THE LEAD OFF A CORNER.
Simple corner routine, really. Corner into the near post, flicked on by John O'Shea and Jones came steaming in on it.
0-1 Sunderland.
Is Fred celebrating?
Hull have 20 minutes to dig this one out. Marco Silva has to change something now.
John O'Shea headed on a corner and a collector's item as Billy Jones scores a rare goal , let alone a spectacular diving header.
Fred is sound asleep , thinking about life in the Championship.
Celtic now lead St. Johnny 3-1.
The Black Cats could do their first league double of the season. Their last was vs the Toon.
Sam Vokes gave Burnley the lead at Turf Moor then the Baggies runned on an equalizer by a player who hadn't scored in a while./
Ross County take the lead at Motherwell
