Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Sunday Morning Blues

It's the end of the road for the Championship regular season this morning. For me, it's a feeling of "should've been." For months, we were safe in the playoff spots, but Leeds somehow contrived to lose its last three matches going into this last day. So I'm up a bit late to follow the proceedings, but I don't have any enthusiasm for it. Neither do BEin, who have decided to show tennis instead.

More interesting will be Liverpool's match with Soton at 8:30am and then the big one, ManYoo v. Arsenal - a classic Premiership match-up. Join me for all the action this morning.

A lot of goals already in the Championship matches, which started at 7am. If Leeds had still had some stake in it, I would have been up bright and early with my lucky Leeds kit on. Instead, I snoozed through my alarm and can hardly bare to follow this stuff today.

And of course Leeds are already 1-0 down at Wigan (sigh)...

Huddersfield 0 Cardiff 1
Newcastle 1 Barnsley 0
Norwich 1 QPR 0

Morning boys
I was woken up by all the score updates in the Championship
There have been a hell of a lot goals inside the first half hour....are you watching Premier League??
Our two 7-0s aren't happening
Leeds losing 1-0 and Wed 1 Fulham 1

Newcastle have taken the lead and Brighton are goalless so the Toon would be Champs

Down the bottom, Birmingham are one up at Ashton Gate, Blackburn are TWO up at Brentford and Forest are still nil nil at home to Ipswich

Forest would be going down if it stays like this

7:37 AM

All posting the same things!!

As it stands, Newcastle will finish as champions, Brighton in second. The playoff spots look like this:

3. Reading
4. Not a Big Club
5. Hudders
6. Fulham

So the playoff matches are the two London clubs and the two Yorkshire clubs.

Nice! Steve and I had a brilliant time going to see Arsenal v. Citeh back in 2012. Mike to run by the Turlington Arms for a pint of cask conditioned bitter and a Thai curry. Wonderful place!

This is on a knife edge now. If Blackburn score again, they’ll go back above Forest on goal difference. If Bristol City equalise against Birmingham, Harry Redknapp’s team will be in the thick of it. At the City Ground, meanwhile, Ipswich almost equalise immediately, but Christophe Berra heads just wide.

Leeds equalize

8:14 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

There’s been no change in the situation at the bottom yet. Blackburn are still the team heading into League One. A Blackburn goal - or an Ipswich goal - will put Forest back into the bottom three, though.

8:15 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

What Leeds need is to hold on to Wood and go up automatically next season
If they come into the season as a contender, they can keep and get some players

They were a no one until Monk came

Blackburn now need two to stay up

Blackburn now need three goals or Birmingham to get pegged back

8:19 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I hate Jose doing that
Putting all their eggs in one basket... how about winning in the league!!!! So many dropped points. They would have been way inside the top four!
Will Jose really throw in the towel against Arsene

8:21 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Bad couple of minutes for Blackburn there. They've allowed a Brentford goal while Forest have scored another against Ipswich. At present, it looks like Blackburn are going down and Forest are staying up.

8:21 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Alex Pritchard has doubled Norwich's lead against QPR. Those two sides were in my top three at the beginning of the season. Not quite for them this season.

8:23 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I think Birmingham are team that could change everything

Forest are going to win
Blackburn still winning
Birmingham still winning

If Brum concede... they are down

Of course, Rovers could concede too and that would help City

8:23 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Chancel Mbema has added a second goal for Newcastle. Looks as if they'll be crowned champions at the end of this one. Brighton need a goal.

Penalty to Brighton and Villa down to ten men

8:28 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Brighton takes the lead... Can you say Champions

8:28 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

According to my calculations, Blackburn would be relegated on 51 points behind Forest on goal difference. So much for being safe on 50 points.

8:29 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Forest miss the pen but score a third anyway... they are safe!

Unless Blackburn score four with Forest scoring or some sort of four goal swing.

8:32 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Blackburn fans look dejected
They don't have a hope of matching Forest now.. that would take four more goals
They shouldn't risk trying to score any more. They should hold on to their lead and get the win and just hope Burton score one

Thanks, Bob. Hope we can provide some cheer after an anti climatic start to the day

Did you mean for Bristol City to score? That would put Blackburn ahead of Reddy's Blues on goal difference

8:34 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

United just need Southampton to get a point and United could overhaul Liverpool

Of course, United would have to do the North London double, beat the Saints and Palace

8:34 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Bristol City are on the front foot

8:34 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Yup, Birmingham had to win if the other two did as well
Bram would be down if they concede

8:35 AM

Cardiff are 0-3 up at Hudders who are limping into the playoffs.

8:35 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

As it stands, Nottingham Forest’s goal difference is -10 after that Assombalonga goal. Blackburn’s is -13 and it’s no contest when it comes to goals scored. Blackburn can’t catch Forest without some help from Ipswich. It’s out of their hands. They need Bristol City to score against Birmingham, who still lead 1-0 at Ashton Gate.

8:36 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Blackburn should not risk anything
They should hold on for the last ten minutes

8:38 AM

Interesting facts about he Drop from the Championship from the BBC

History suggests Blackburn can consider themselves pretty unlucky to have gone down with more than 50 points.

That hasn't happened since 2013, when Wolves and Peterborough went down with 51 and 54 points respectively.

As little as 41 points could have saved a team last term, and just 42 points the year before that.

But, despite going unbeaten for their final five games of this season - winning three - 51 points wasn't enough for Rovers, who go down on goal difference.
