This should be a fascinating opportunity to take a look at the next generation of German stars, as Jurgi Loew has taken the opportunity to run out a number of kids, including several who won an Olympic Gold last summer.
The teams news out of Russia this afternoon:
Australia
Ryan; Degenek, Sainsbury, Wright; Leckie, Milligan, Mooy, Behich; Luongo, Rogic; Juric
Germany
Leno; Kimmich, Mustafi, Rudiger, Hector; Goretzka, Rudy, Stindl; Draxler, Brandt, S.Wagner
We're all set to go - both sides playing in their traditional kits thankfully. Aussies to get us underway.
A fairly empty Sochi stadium this afternoon. That won't please the organizers.
A bit messy in the opening stages, Aussies really pressing the Germans in midfield.
Much the Germans forward work will go through skipper Julian Draxler.
GOAL! Well that was easy enough. 1-0 Germans!
Young Brandt steamed by the fullbacks down the right and pulled back an inviting ball for Stindl to side foot home. Easy.
Fortunately, since Mexico aren't playing today we don't have to suffer through more of "El Presidente's" absurd goal celebrations.
Oh - close call there. Great volleyed cross over and the Hoffenheim striker Wagner should have buried the diving header.
Germany looking robotically impressive as always. A bit frightening.
Brandt is murdering the Aussie backline down the right time and again. This time he pulls back to Goretska who's touch let him down.
Oh - Brandt nearly squeezes in one from a tight angle. Matty Ryan bailed them out.
Some more suicidal defending nearly lets Germany in again. They really should be filling their boots here.
A rare chance for the Socceroos, with a standard free kick lofted in. The defender Sainsbury got around the German back four but got his header all wrong.
More inventive German attacking now - they really should be 3 or 4 up if they gave a toss about this tournament.
GOAL! The Socceroos are level now!!!
To their credit, the Aussies kept at their task and got their reward. Rogic got two bites at the cherry. His first shot was heading well wide but cannoned off the back of one of the big German defenders and landed fortunately at Rogic's feet. He made no mistake with his second effort. Goalkeeper Leno will want that one back, as it went under his body.
1-1!
Germany turn up the heat again and get a penalty! Luongo upends Goretska in the area.
Skipper Draxler steps up to take...
Knocks it home easily.
2-1!
Half-time, then. Germany seem in total control here, able to score at will. They really should be four or five up but for some profligate finishing by Wagner.
We're back on for the second half at Sochi.
GOAL! Well that didn't take long. Germany have started where they finished.
Simple, and excellent. Kimmich has the ball out on the right, briefly looks stuck but then clips a delicious left-footed pass into the right channel of the area. Goretzka runs onto it, steadies himself and places a firm side-foot half-volley past Ryan.
Keep in mind that this is a very makeshift, second string German side that's giving Australia a chasing here today. Frightening to imagine what they're first team would do to them.
Goric does well to skip by two and picks up a great free kick chance now. Goretzka gets the yellow.
3-2 really would be a flattering scoreline if this one flew in the top by Leno.
GOAL! Blimey - the Socceroos are back in it! Or are they - it's a VAR check now.
It is 3-2, don't you know! Leno with another blunder and he's unlikely now to have another opportunity to play in goal for his country now. Calling Manuel Neuer!
We've reached the hour mark so some changes are nigh.
Oh - Werner has hit the post! Nearly 4-2 there.
Another German change now - Stindl off and Liverpool favorite Emre Can on.
Oh - Kruse nearly gets the equalizer. Big chance!
Leno did well to come off his line there and do some sweeping work.
Goalscorer Goric comes off and old boy Tim Cahill comes on.
Great block there by Arsenal man Mustafi as Behich was threatening to lay a cross on for Cahill.
How direct is this Timo Werner kid from Leipzig. Tried to beat the entire Aussie backline and then fired his shot just wide.
Aussies really trying to press for the equalizer now. Germans sitting back. Cor!
That's it - full time and the Germans have eked out a 3-2 win.
In truth, Germany only played at full tilt for about ten minutes or so. That plus some bungles by goalkeeper Leno allowed the Socceroos to dream.
That's over and out for me today, chaps!
