A Bizarre Wednesday Evening Combination
It really is an unusual mixture of matches with both Gold Cup matches and a U.S.L. match involving my local RGV Toros . There are two Gold Cup Quarterfinal matches . Costa Rica vs Panama looks set to head to extra time amidst a tedious 0-0 score line. The Toros vs Orange County F.C. kicks off at 8 P.M. on Watch ESPN. while the U.S. vs El Salvador kicks off at 9 P.M. on FS1. It's a surprisingly busy July evening.

They're off from H.E.B. Park
R.G.V. is coming off a 4-0 loss to Swope Park and a 6-2 loss to the Sacramento Republic, which is managed by Rebecca Lowe's husband.
I thought it was 0-0 in the quarterfinal, but the Ticos defeated Panama 1-0 thanks to a Godoy O.G. Sounds like exciting stuff.
R.G.V. has had about 90 % of the early possession without threatening the Orange County goal
A very good summer evening. We just finished a delicious chicken skewers on the barbie using the doohickey that I posted on FB about earlier. Fabulous evening here in Fred Town. Hope you've had a good one too.
Yes we have. I cooked two T bones in the frying pan. Sounds like you cooked a delicious meal. Hope you and Kate are having a great evening too.
R.G.V. had their first shot on goal straight at the keeper.
Sagal for the R.G.V was booked for holding back a player that was about to start an excellent break. Orange County take the free kick and it's headed well wide.
Orange County win a corner after Kai Green was caught dwelling on the ball in his own box.
Luna is down injured for R. G.V. and looks like he will need to be substituted only fifteen minutes into the match. Christian Lucetero replaces him.
Orange County win another corner, but it's headed away
We've got a baseball chat show on ESPN up here and a nonsense friendly between Roma and PSG on the Deuce. Reasonable warm-up fare for the big match.
BUGGER!! ORANGE COUNTY TAKES THE LEAD OFF OF SOME PATHETIC PLAY FROM THE TOROS. THE TOROS KEEPER THREW THE BALL TO THE CENTRAL DEFENDER JUST OUTSIDE THE BOX AND HE LITERALLY PASSED IT TO FERNANADES THE ORANGE COUNTY STRIKER, WHO LAID IT OFF FOR STEFANOVIC , WHO HAD A WIDE OPEN GOAL AND BLASTED IT OFF THE UNDERSIDE OF THE BAR. HIS FIRST GOAL OF THE SEASON.
You don't have the R.G. V. Toros vs Orange County F.C. ?
That goal shows why the Toros have lost their last two matches by four goals and why Orange County is on a four match unbeaten run./
You will need to go onto the ESPN site. The match is online.
WAY HAY !!! RGV HAVE A PENALTY AS CASNER WAS TRIPPED IN THE BOX. A LATE CHALLENGE!!!
YESSSSSSSSSSS!!! ERIC BYRD TIES IT UP FROM THE SPOT, SENDING THE KEEPER THE WRONG WAY.
There is a water break at the half hour mark due to the intense South Texas July heat.
Blimey - it looks as if Chelsea have done the deal with Real Madrid to bring Morata for £58 million.
Play resumed as I got a chance to feed Sparky dinner.
WOW !!! I didn't think they would sign him. I think he's too lightweight for the Premier League and not worth that kind of money
PHEW!!! Stefanovic was through on goal and nearly had a second as he shot just wide with just the keeper to beat
That's a lot of dosh - he'll likely be the replacement up front for Diego Costa.
Marquinhos has just rattled one in for PSG on the Deuce.
As predicted Bruce Arena has brought the A team back for tonight's quarter final clash against the Salvadorans, including Bradley, Dempsey and Timmy Howard.
A thirty pass move ends with a cross from Kai Green headed down and Casner has a shot clear the park.
I know he made half a dozen changes to the squad by sending some makeweights home and replacing them with reinforcements.
I was surprised that he sent Bedoya home, as he'd had a good tournament. Perhaps he's already made his place in the squad?
RUDDY NORAH! The announcer said that Sirius XM will air a USL match each week. That's surprising.
Either that or he wants to scout another player. Gooner will be pleased that Guzan was sent packing
Orange County win a corner as we enter three minutes of stoppage time due to the water break.
The corner is headed out by Eric Bird off the other corner flag for another corner. The keeper does well to catch the next corner.
Here's the team news out of Philly tonight:

It's 1-1 at the half at H.E.B. Park
Michael Bradley about to lead the players out in the tunnel.
El Presidente is giving Lexi some stick for predicting that the US will win by "multiple goals."
I just heard that and rightly so. A lack of respect from Lexi. The U.S. will have to earn that win.
ES are no chumps - this could be a tight one.
Anthems are over and it's showtime. I'm all a tingly.
And we're underway from Philly. Come on, the Yanks!
The U.S> vs El Salvador is underway
The link won't won't load for the other match , so all eyes will be on the match from Philly Cheesesteak.
A bit thick of US Soccer to schedule this one on the East Coast. Probably a slightly larger ES crowd than US one.
Paul Arriola wins an early corner now for the US.
Rowe has a shot blocked for a U.S. corner.
OH!!!! A horrible back pass and Zelaya was off to the races, but Timmy rushed out to deny the El Salvador striker.
Agreed, but I would expect nothing better from U.S. Soccer.
I'm quite liking the looks of Kelyn Rowe from my beloved New England Revolution. Gooner is not keen, but I am.
Zardes did well to get to the by-line but his cut back was deflected out for a corner.
Zardes has pass deflected for a corner
Oh - how did that not creep in!
OH!!! a scramble in the El Sal box and several blocked shots lead to another corner.
Meanwhile , the match loaded and Jorginho James, who gifted Orange County their goal, has a long range effort straight to Orange County keeper , Charlie Lyons.
Zelaya is fouled just outside the U.S. box
OH!!! Larin has a close range effort blocked as he received a pass off the free kick.
Oh - a close call for the US there. ES knocking on the door. Great crackling start to this one.
Not impressed by the U.S. early doors.
ay-yi-yi, the wifi over here at the Assisted Living is no bueno. I'll keep up as well as I can lads. Same old Salvador, quick, lively and not profitable as the moment. But someone in a hooped shirt needs to put his foot on the ball very flippin' soon.
Having trouble with the link , but it was still 1-1 the last time there was action.
Money is why the Salvador match is scheduled in a heavy Salvadoran population area.
Evening, Gooner - good of you to join us under the circumstances. I agree - a bit shaky at the back for us.
Who is Matt Hedges? Deer in the headlights stuff.
Good evening , Gooner. How have you been? Agreed. The U.S. needs to stamp their authority on the match
That's a no bueno for me. I'd schedule ES in Boise.
Wayne wants to know why you boys are up late on a school night. Says hello too.
He plays more like Benson and Hedges. I'll hedge my bet on him.
Hello Mr. D. LOL!! School in July?
LOL! It's summer vacation, El Principale. As Alice Cooper put it, "School's out for evah!"
Lots of Salvadorans in Idaho because of agriculture. Think Maiine
Jozy receives a pass from Nagby and with his back to goal turns and shoots straight at the keeper.
Decent chance their for Dozy. Didn't take it.
Zardes does slot one in - but it's flagged offside. The replay shows that Zardes was level. Poor show from the Trini linesman.
Maine's lovely this time of year - why not?
BLOODY HELL! Zardes has a goal disallowed for offside. The replay shows he was on. We've been robbed.
Romero picks up the first yellow card of the match for a niggly one on Dozy.
The wrong player is booked for El Salvador as Arriola is the victim of a horrible challenge.
Oh - Dempsey controlled a lovely ball in from Arriola. Turned and shot straight at the keeper.
Clint shoots straight at Derby County Carillo.
This gringo ref is having a bit of a 'mare
VAR should not be required to determine who should be booked. Any pub level ref should get that right.
Agabe gets a yellow for a soft one. Make up call perhaps.
Carillo is one of the little people
Nagbe with a very doubtful yellow.
Nagby booked for his first poor challenge while El Sal players get five chances. What's up with this ref?
LOL, Gooner! Fair enough on your description of the ref.
Match is getting increasingly choppy with the ref blowing his whistle for everything.
Oh - shame. Zardes got to the by-line but couldn't bend it like Beckham.
No foul would have been a better call there. Gingeree cant' get anything right at the moment.
Romero plowed into Dozy again. How many of those is the ref going to allow tonight?
The match loaded again and it's still 1-1 from H.E.B. Park win the 74th minute
Dozy goes down in the box in a heap of bodies. Call goes the other way.
You two will be surprised to read that there is another water break . It's at the haf hour mark in the half.
Zardes is fouled just outside the El Sal box.
Shouldn't that have been a pen?
Carillo punches away the free kick
The US has to capitalize on its height advantage at these set pieces.
Play resumes after the water break
I'm for it. No problem with that in this heat. I came over here from a dip in the Alex city pool and I feel like a new man. And this year, I'm a senior citizen and it's $2 admission for me.
Bruce Arena letting the officials have it and I don't blame him.
Lovely - I'm looking for the OAP concession in the coming years.
Congratulations . Well deserved. That sounds like a great deal. Are we that old?
I have to agree with Cobi Jones - the passing just hasn't been good enough. Dozy has been particularly poor in breaking up moves.
The Nipple can't beat his man over there on the dribble. Try a run outside or inside mate.
We are that old, MUR. How many months off retirement are you, now?
Dozy's passing, the Duece's passing, and it goes without saying Zardes's passing.
55 and older you whippersnappers.
Ceren is down under a challenge from Jozy. It's really irritating that El Sal compensates for lack of talent by feigning injury. Their elimination will be a good riddance.
It's 22 and a half months and counting, mate. You two are invited for my retirement party.
We'll have the stripogram on order, mate.
Agreed. I've retired from El Salvador at RFK. They and their supporters are shitty guests.
Blimey - that Salvadoran bloke on the ground is a bit sweaty. How hot is it in Philly tonight? He looks like MUR after mowing the lawn in August at noon.
SERIOUSLY!!! EL SAL IS THAT INJURY PRONE. YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING!
Gingeree is allowing a lot of bad tackling and fake injuries from the Salvadorans.
All of these fake injuries are ticking valuable seconds off the clock.
That's hot. I make sure to get the mowing complete by 10 AM or wait til 7 in the evening.
It was 97 here today and it's snapped down to 90. And it's killer humidity.
Nice to see Lichaj giving them a taste as long at Gingeree is absent from this game.
The ref needs to start booking the Salvadorans in order to stop the time wasting.
GOAL! That'll do nicely! Gonzalez with the headed effort!
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! OMAR GONZALEZ GIVES THE u.s. THE LEAD.
Lovely free kick in from Bradley and Gonzalez finally took advantage of the size mismatch.
1-0 US!
I don't fancy Gonzalez's defensive capabilities but he is a threat up front. That was the needed goal to open the floodgates.
Superb free kick from Bradley that Gonzalez glanced in. The Salvadorans will be forced to open up and stop the time wasting.
Omar! 1-0
WOW !!! That's a typical Summer day in Harlingen. Just a taste of what we experience four months a year
Omar tends to shine against our CONCACAF neighbors. It's Môller, Ribary, and co that tend to exploit him.
Three minutes of stoppage time from Philly
Carillo spills a shot from Jozy then gathers the ball.
GOAL! Even Eric Lichaj is getting in on the action now!!!
Our typical summer. Friday and the weekend are threatening triple digits
GOAL LICHAJ PUTS THE U.S. TWO UP OFF A PASS FROM CLINT AS HE NUT MEGGED DERBY CARILLO.
Terrific move there, especially from Dempsey with the swivel and pass into space for Lichaj. Fantastic.
1-0!
Sounds like typical July weather here.
The U.S. is two up at the half.
Nice! All that farting about by the Salvadorans results in added time extended from the 3 on the board to the 6th minute and Lichaj's goal. Just desserts for this rabble.
Into the seventh minute of stoppage time at H.E.B. Park and Jorginho James, who gifted Orange County their goal, has been sent off for R.G.V.
Despite that it finishes 1-1 at H.E.B. Park.
Bob will be pleased that Lichaj scored his first U.S. goal. It tarted when Nagby won a tackle at the back. Jozy passed to Morrow down the left , who passed to Clint with his back at goal. He turned his defender and found the surprisingly advanced Lichaj , who got behind the El Sal defense and shot through the legs of the on rushing Carillo.
We're set for the second half....
The second half is underway from Philly, where they are enduring South Texas like heat
Larin down for El Sal. They do not have time to waste,
Larin is icing down his crotch after that clash with Arriola.
The U.S. look set to play the Ticos at Cowboys Stadium on Saturday, which is Melanie's 18th birthday
Looks like a birthday treat for Melanie. 18, eh? Cor!
A cheap shot by Bonilla off the ball on Lichaj. How is that not a red card.? He was not even show a card. Drew Fisher should be banned for life from any officiating.
This half will all be about game management now. No reason to let ES back into this one.
Zelaya with a wild blaze over the bar after he'd broken free. He can do that all night long.
She has decided to spend it with friends and go out to eat with us on another day. She will probably not be interested in the match
Just wide by Pineda as Nagby coughed up possession.
Oh - Pinela was able to ghost by LIchaj there and should have done better with the shot. Alarm bells for the US.
After this performance, a return to ER may be on the cards for Lichaj.
Little Susie for Matt Hedges, immediately.
Oh - a couple of good chances there for the US.
Mancia heads out for a U.S. corner off a volleyed cross from Arriola.
PHEW!!! A superb El Sal break, but they couldn't take advantage and superb defending by Lichaj to prevent any El Sal chances.
Oscar Ceren on for Mayen, not the Mayan.
Larin booked for a nasty challenge on Arriola.
#4 bit Jozy! 4th official should be able to view that and stop the match to let Gingeree know that it happened.
Shocking performance by the ref tonight.
Another scare for the U.S. as Pineda has a free header and it's over from three yards out.
Where was Dozy bit? I didn't see it.
Morrow tackles Ceren for the first El Sal corner of the match,
It was off a corner. He was pushed to the ground by the defender and Ginger missed it , as usual.
The Pie Eater is on for Arriola.
Zardes has a pass intended for the Pie Eater out for a corner.
At the corner, Romero who was marking him, leaned in and bit the back of his shoulder. Dr. Joe imagines that because the Gingeree didn't see it, it can be retroactively punished. Heavily because Romero has been a comedy villain all night.
More argybargy between Romero and Dozy.
Carillo miss judges the corner from Bradley and Benson and Hedges heads over.,
More-is takes a rabbit punch as he goes by his defender.
More- Is less in terms of fitness.
Morrow is chopped down.
Acosta on for Zardes.
Possession stats for the US on the up-tick now that Zardes is off and Acosta is on.
Carillo does well to catch the free kick from Bradley.
Still not convinced by Zardes. He does provided some much needed width. But his final delivery is poor.
Superb last ditch tackle by Bradley then close range block from Timmy then a desperate clearance to end the threat,
Agreed. His delivery is almost bad as that from Trump.
Well...I wouldn't say that....
Oh - Dempsey let fly there - Carilla tipped it aside.
Carillo pushes away a long range effort from Clint.
Morrow blocks a pass for an El Sal corner.
LOL. Perhaps not , mate.
Sanchez is on for Pineda.
Jozy fouled on an attempted break.
Romero booked for a foul on Clint.
Alas, it's the final sub for El Sal as Bonilla is off.
Tamacas booked for a rash foul on Morrow.
The fee kick from Bradley was just too high for Clint.
Orellana fouls Nagby.
We seem to have shut up shop at this point. Should be an easy berth to the semis with the Ticos on Saturday now.
Zelaya offside on an attempted EL Sal break.
Potius on for Nagby.
Sorry. Its for Jozy.
Agreed. Let's hope they don't take out one of our players before the final whistle.
Agreed. Your fellow Texan Clint Dempsey has taken a beating.
Three minutes of stoppage time.
He will be pleased that the semi is just a few hours drive from his hometown where his family can watch from Cowboys Stadium.
Full-time - Well, that was all fairly satisfying. The US safely through to the semis. El Salvador threatened early but were clearly second best.
That's it for me, mate. Nice chatting with you as always. Do try to stay cool in that heat. Cheerio!
The U.S win 2-0 and face the Ticos in the semis on Saturday from Cowboys Stadium.
Cheers, mate. It's always a pleasure chatting with you.
CHEERS!
