Germany v. Mexico Live!
Yesterday's match was more of a damp squib than the firecracker I was hoping for. I'm an eternal optimist (and a glutton for punishment!), so I'm settling in to watch the second semi-final between Germany, the current World Cup holders, and Mexico, the current Gold Cup holders. Let's hope it's better otherwise I'm going to have to whip out the smelling salts after the match. Join me if you're watching.

A very good Thursday afternoon, chaps. I'm settling in to watch the this afternoon's match.
Both teams are unbeaten in this competition so far, with two wins and a draw apiece. Germany have seen off Australia and Cameroon, and drawn with finalists Chile. Mexico meanwhile have beaten New Zealand and hosts Russia, and scrambled a draw against Portugal.
The teams gathering in the tunnel in Sochi now:
Germany: ter Stegen, Henrichs, Kimmich, Ginter, Rudiger, Hector, Rudy, Goretzka, Stindl, Draxler, Werner.
Subs: Trapp, Mustafi, Plattenhardt, Wagner, Demirbay, Can, Younes, Sule, Sane, Brandt, Demme, Leno.
Mexico: Ochoa, Araujo, Alanis, Moreno, Layun, Giovani dos Santos, Herrera, Jonathan dos Santos, Aquino, Jimenez, Javier Hernandez.
Subs: Cota Robles, Salcedo, Marquez, Diego Reyes, Fabian, Vela, Damm, Guardado, Peralta, Luis Reyes, Lozano, Talavera.
Referee: Nestor Pitana (Argentina).
Germany make four changes to the experimental version of their experimental team sent out against Cameroon. In come Jonas Hector, Benjamin Henrichs, Leon Goretzka and Lars Stindl; out go Niklas Sule, Emre Can, Marvin Plattenhardt and Kerem Demirbay.
Mexico must do without their suspended captain Andres Guardado. Also missing from the starting XI that faced Russia: Diego Reyes, Hirving Lozano and Carlos Vela. Stepping up: Raul Jimenez, Giovani dos Santos, Javier Aquino and Oswaldo Alanis.
Teams coming out on the pitch now. Really nice facility.
Germany get us underway in Sochi.
El Presidente is unfortunately doing the commentary, starting the evening with his trademark bellow of "It's Soccer Time!" sigh....
Germany right at it from the off. I really like this Timo Werner bloke. He seems very direct and honest.
It’s all a bit scrappy now, but Mexico have a chance to finally get their foot on the ball, and stroke it around the middle accordingly. A pleasant respite after that breezy German start.
GOAL! Lovely team goal there for the Germans.
Rudiger was set free on the right and he played a lovely ball in to Goretska who's first time shot in the corner just evaded Ochoa's grasp.
1-0!
GOAL! Germany are ripping Mexico apart!
Goretska gets his second in a couple of minutes. Lovely ball through from Stindl to Goretska who was completely unmarked in the penalty area and his ran through to stick his shot in the left corner.
2-0!
Better from El Tri now. They've been shell-shocked so far so it'll take a lot of digging out. Corner.
Good afternoon, Bob. My students are taking their final exams on their last day of Summer School. How have you been?
Predictably, the Germans have taken the foot off the gas now that they've gone two up.
Afternoon, David! I'm having a lovely summer afternoon here in Fred-town. Went into the office for a spot of filing this morning and then came home for lunch and stayed for the match.
This game is very open. Both sides are paying little more than lip service to keeping it tight at the back. This won’t end 2-0, IMHO.
Stindl tackled for a corner after some nice German passing
I guess no lost fans going on a scavenger hunt.
Oh - Werner was in on goal there but Ochoa stood his ground well. Werner gets into great positions but doesn't score with a high enough percentage.
Not for this one - it's been fairly entertaining.
OH!!! Werner put through from a pass by Heinrichs and shot against Ochoa's legs for a corner. Kimmich heads high and wide from the corner.
Both the final and third place matches look like rematches of contests that finished drawn.
Chicharito seems to be playing in a deep-lying Wayne Rooney role today. Not very effective.
I'm sure his Bayer Levrkusen teammates will be giving him some stick. He could probably use a few Bayers.
Heinrichs clears a cross from Aquino for a Mexican corner that is fisted away by Ter Steegen
I'm surprised that he's still playing at such a high level. Shouldn't he already be picking up a paycheck in Dubai?
Chicha flagged offside and shows from his time at Bayer that he has learned how to be a real pill.
I think that's a couple of years away.
Hector Herrera fouls Strindl from behind trying to make Strudl out of him.
Decent kick save by Ter Steegen from Johnny 2 Saints then an easy save from a header by the same player. Two saves from 2 Saints.
Oh - Rudiger was put through there but shanked his shot well wide.
High and wide from Heinrichs.
End to end. Oh - Chicha misses a golden opportunity. Gio Two Saints put him through and he only had to dink over Ter Stegen. Put it over the bar.
Lovely from Chicha . Put through by Gio 2 saints with that went off of Kimmich then Chicha scoops a shot over with just Ter Steegen to beat
Why again did United let such a talented player go?
Seb Rudy fouls Gio 2 Saints about 25 yards from goal.
Free kick chance now for El Tri....
Decent strike that Ter Stegen had to tip over for a corner.
Gio Two Saints with another lovely ball over but well defended by Hector.
Ter Steegen does well to finger tip the free kick from Herrera over
Mexico has a cross headed out for a corner that is headed away
Another Mexican corner.
Germans really dropping deep now.
Draxler trips Herrera about 35 yards from goal.
A minute of stoppage time.
Germany is two up at the half thanks to a pair of early goals from Goretzka.
Osorio makes a change for Mexico as Hirving Lozano, who scored that comical goal vs Russia, is on for Aquino. Second half underway.
Ochoa gets away with a clearance off of Goretzka that lands in his greatful arms.
Sorry. it was off of Werner.
Back on for the second half. I hope that Germany come back out of their shells. They can be so good when they want to be but they're really cynical.
Draxler blocks a cross for a Mexico corner.
Oh - Raul was in on goal but shot straight at Ter Stegen.
The corner was headed on then headed inches over in the six yard box.
Jimenez straight at Ter Steegen on a counter
OH!!! Werner put through and shoots wide with just Ochoa to beat. He wanted a penalty for a clip from behind. There didn't seem to be one. More of a stumble.
Great striding run by Stindl before he was unceremoniously hacked down by Jimenez. Great free kick chance now.
Jimenez booked for a foul from behind
Draxler with a tame long range effort straight at Ochoa off a short free kick.
This match is opening up a bit more now.
Really clumsy challenge for a header by Alanis on Strindl
GOAL! Werner gets his goal finally - a tap in.
Werner was initially in an off-side position there but was inactive on the pass to Hector who merely knocked the ball back to him for the tap in.
3-0!
Germany seem to have turned the screw again.
GOAL !!! GERMANY GOES THREE UP OFF A TAP IN FROM WERNER FROM A PASS BY HECTOR FROM A PASS HE RECEIVED THAT WENT RIGHT THROUGH THE MEXICAN BACK FOUR
Germany have a shot blocked for a corner.
Agreed,. Mexico are screwed.
Johnny Two Saints gets the hook.
Marco Fabian on for Gio 2 Saints leaving El Tri with only one 2 Saints.
Into the side netting by Mexico on a move similar to the third German goal
Substitute Fabian has a go from distance. Not too far away.
Raffa Marquez on for Johnny 2 Saints in the final roll of the dice for Osorio while Germany CAN see a light at the end of the tunnel as Goretzka is replaced. Germany shutting up shop?
There were 2 two Saints on the pitch now there are none.
Oh - Layun ripped one to the near post, well saved by Ter Stegen.
Ter Steegen does well to turn around a shot from Layoun.
The corner from Marco Fabian is headed down then cleared away by Rudy
After that brief spate of attacking, Germany have reverted into their shells again. They really have only played at full tilt for about ten minutes in this match, about five in each half, during which they scored three goals.
Can booked for a foul on Raffa Marquez.
Oh - off the bar for Mexico!
Draxler shoots straight at Ochoa after some trickery past Layoun then Raul Jimenez is unlucky as a header at the other end of the pitch comes off the bar.
Brandt on for Strindl
Draxler, the skipper comes off after another decent performance.
High and wide by Herrera, which just about sums up Mexico's performance.
He's replaced by Younes on the final roll of the dice by Herr Louew.
Rudiger and Marco Fabian down off a collision.
Both up as the cross from Layoun came off of Rudiger for corner
Oh - another great save by Ter Stegen from the header.
Layoun wins a corner off of Younes. Ter Steegen superbly saved a header from Raffa Marquez off the corner from Layoun, but to no avail as the offside flag was raised.
Ginter clears a cross from Lozano for a German corner. Marquez heads well over from that corner.
GOAL! Mexico get their consolation goal finally.
A thunderous strike from about forty yards off the short corner by the substitute Fabian.
Into stoppage time now - surely too much for even the "Comeback Kids."
GOAL !!!! MARCO FABIAN SCORES A SUPERB LONG RANGE FREE KICK FOR MEXICO BUT IT'S ,MERELY A CONSOLATION GOAL. CAN TRIPPED MARQUEZ THAT RESULTED IN THE FREE KICK
GOAL! And Germany romp back down the pitch and restore their three-goal lead!
Three minutes of stoppage time
GOAL !!!YOUNES RESTORES THE THREE GOAL LEAD. NICE PASSING FROM CAN AND BRANDT
Younes with a lovely left footed strike there
4-1!
Kate thinks that the Germans just scored again in order to torture her with El Presidente's goal celebration one more time.
oh!!! Ter Steegn does well to turn around a shot from Chicha . ter Steegn saves a header from the corner.
Sounds like a fair punishment
It's over as Germany are in the final with a super 4-1 win.
Great chatting with you. I look forward to the pleasure of your company on Sunday.
