Lakenheath Old Boys
We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

The teams now out on the pitch at Sochi enjoying the anthems:
Germany: Ter Stegen, Ginter, Plattenhardt, Draxler, Demirbay, Werner, Can, Rudiger, Sule, Kimmich, Rudy.
Cameroon: Ondoa, Mabouka, Anguissa, Teikeu, Ngadeu, Moukandjo, Aboubakar, Bassogog, Siani, Djoum, Fai C.
Good morning, Bob. Great to chat with you this morning
Hi there, David - how is your weekend going?
Cameroon and the Aussies would need big wins in their respective matches in order to go through to the semis. Odds are on Germany and Chile to progress.
Timmy Cahill becomes a cap centurian for the Aussies while Sochi becomes only the second venue to host a major summer tournament match and be a former Winter Olympic venue
They're off from Sochi and Moscow
And we're underway from Sochi, Cameroon getting us going.
Great. Thanks for asking. How is your weekend? Helping Melanie pack for her trip to San Marcos for Freshman Orientation and Jacquelyn so she can babysit her grandfather while Elizabeth and Melanie are in San Marcos.
The announcer mentioned that the only competitive meeting between Germany and Cameroon was in 2002 when there was a baker's dozen yellow cards and a pair of reds. I don;t see that today as the referees are clamping down on the nonsense and the Germans have evolved since then.
Nice one, mate. I hope Melanie enjoys the trip. Exciting times for her.
I noticed that when I picked an image. There were lots of pictures of a big ruck involving Michael Ballack and the Arsenal old boy Lauren.
Aranguiz feels the force of challenge from MAssiomo LUongo of QPR, who regularly makes those challenges in the Championship.
Thanks, mate. She, Elizabeth, and Elizabeth's nephew will be back Thursday evening.
I remember that well. Neither payer ever saw a confrontation worth avoiding.
Superb save by new Seagulls keeper, Matty Ryan, off a superb volley from Vidal. He saved the rebound as well.
Oh - Djoum had a go and the deflected effort could have gone anywhere.
Timmy Cahill with a late challenge on Vidal. Mutual respect between both players , who see the funny side of it.
Kate says "hi" to you and your family. She's being very kind by allowing me to watch on a busy Sunday.
Onoa , in the Cameroon goal, punches away a cross that he should have caught.
Great kick save by Matty Ryan from Vargas, who was just offside off a superb through ball from Alexis.
Hello to Kate and wishing her the best. I thank her for letting me chat with you today.
Chris Hughton will have a decision to make as he will have to decide whether the number 1 jersey goes to Matty Ryan or David Stockdale , who has kept goal ad done a great job the past few seasons.
Juric got away with a head butt on Fuenzalida. The Aussies are lucky not to be a man down.
Cameroon are pressing rather well. The Germans very casual in this outing.
Cahill fouls Vargas about 35 yards from goal.
Chile have a free kick but it's rifled into the Aussie wall.
Vidal more like Gore Vidal with that free kick into the wall.
I' watching the match from Moscow on the telly and the one from the former Winter Olympic/ current seaside resort city, on the computer.
I really don't like this Russian bint who's been doing the sideline commentary, focusing on player's childhoods. Ugh!
Luongo booked for a challenge on Vidal. Those may be legal in the Championship, but not in international footie.
The Germans Can NOT find the back of the net as a long range effort is wide.
Agreed. She's really irksome. We're watching that from Russia NOT with love.
Oh - Can bangs one just wide of the right post. Not far away.
Diaz cuts out a pass from Robbie Kruse for the Aussie's first corner.
Oh - Kimmich should have buried that diving header. Just wide.
Kimmich heads a great cross from Plattenhardt wide.
Chile and Germany will go through if the current scores hold up. Chile would win the group on goal difference.
Sebastian Rudy tries a pop from distance. Well over the mark.
Video evidence is being used to determine if Alexis should have been awarded a penalty after trapping down a long ball. It seemed fair, IMHO. It looked a super tackle.
The advantage for the side who tops the group is an extra rest day and playing Mexico rather than Portugal.
I agree - Alexis went down too easily, IMHO.
The ref/ VAR agrees with me, but not Aliie Wagner, who seems to think every challenge is a foul.
Chile vs mexico would be interesting as several Chile Players play in the Mexican League and showed their thirst by going seven up vs Mexico last Summer In Copa America Centanario.
James Troisi is booked for a rugby tackle on Vidal.
Timmy Cahill becomes the latest Aussie booked as it was a rash challenge on Aranguiz. Not sure he's arguing.VAR is being used to see if it should be changed to a red card.Dr. Joe says it should be red.
I'm liking the look of this Timo Werner bloke - he's very direct.
It stays yellow . A sending off would have been horrible for Cahill on his 100th Aussie appearance.
Oh - Christian Bassagog did well to weave his way into the box but the Germans did well to track him.
Bravo! Well done as it was a great close range block from Cahill off a superb chipped pass from Troisi.
Chile win another free kick.
A poor free kick from Aranguiz is headed away
Bai picks up a good free kick chance off Can.
Oh - dangerous free kick delivery in but well shepherded out for a corner by Rudiger. Corner comes to nowt.
Fai Collins goes down too easily and the ref falls for it as Cameroon are awarded a free kick
Makndjou takes and it's headed out by Rudiger for a Cameroon corner.
GOAL !!! TROISI GIVES THE AUSSIES AN UNLIKELY LEAD VS CHILE!
Wow! That will set the cat amongst the pigeons in this group!
Really poor by a talented Chile side. A long clearance by Bravo was not properly trapped and was picked out by Robbie Kruse, who went on run , played a one two with Trent Sainsbury then found Troisi , with a superb through ball that was put away past Bravo.
Germany top the group now on 5 points. Chile and Oz are tied on points with Chile hanging on to a slim goal difference margin.
Oh - Anguissa had a big chance at the back post. Ter Stegen kept it out with an acrobatic effort.
Onoa with a superb close range block fropm Werner off a gross from Plattenhardt , but the offside flag was raised.
Into stoppage time now.
Ter Steegen with a superb tip over.
Sainsbury clears off the line to prevent an equalizer by Chile.
Half time arrives in Sochi - 0-0 here while the Aussies are pegging Chile back. Interesting.
Then Sainsbury should have put the Aussies two up as he volleyed wide with just Bravo to beat.
The Aussies have a shock 1-0 lead vs Chile at the half while it's 0-0 between Germany and Cameroon at the half.
If results hold, Germany would win the group with five points.while Chile and the Aussies have four points , but Chile has a +1 gd while the Aussies are even. A second Aussie goal would see them overtake Chile.
Juan Antonio Pizzi makes a substitution for Chile as Martin Rodriguez is on for Fuenzalida.
The second half is underway
Actually, a double substitution from Pizzi as Pablo Hernandez is on for Aranguiz.
Is there an upset brewing in what has otherwise been a really predictable tournament up to this point?
GOAL !!!!!! DERAMBAI GIVES GERMANY THE LEAD!
Derembai went on a solo run then passed to Drexler, who returned the pass with a cheeky back heel, then Dermebai scored from just outside the box with a cracker in the upper 90.
Germans in the driver's seat now. Great goal from Demirbay!
Dermebai shoots over from close range off a pass from Plattenhardt as Cameroon were all over the place.
Werner wins a corner off a long pass.
As things stand Germany is running away with the group or we should say cruising. Looks like a date with Mexico on Thursday.
OH!!! Chile were caught out by a short Aussie free kick, but were saved by the offside flag as Juric had a close range shot blocked by Bravo
The Aussies win a corner as Werner sliced wide with just Onoa to beat
Bravo fist away the corner then Martin Rodriguez fouls Juric.
Great double save by Onoa from Werner and Brandt. Cahill with a free header off the free kick straight to Bravo.
Cameroon has a defender done as play has stopped in Sochi.
Milligan , who scored the penalty vs Cameroon , is on for Cahill and takes the captain's arm band as well.
Vidal booked for a foul on Luongo.
An attacking change for Cameroon as Ngameleu , a striker, is on for Djoum, a midfield player.
Ryan saves from Alexis after ping pong in the Aussie box while Kimmich clumsily concedes a free kick to Cameroon. Into the wall by Makandjou.
Aboubakr shoots wide off some nice passing.
Well wide by Djoum as Cameroon's play has imp[roved since that substitution.
Siani booked for Cameroon. The Aussies with a second change as MacLaren is on for Juric.
That challenge is being reviewed to see if the yellow should be changed to red.
Pure chaos now as Siani was initially shown a yellow then after video evidence review a red. And now it appears it was Mabouka instead. Mistaken identity. Wow!
GOAL! Werner finally gets his goal after a lot of hard work.
Chaos amidst the review and
WOW! it's being changed to red. No now it's being reviewed again. A really lengthy stoppage. It's a red.The issue was that the correct player be sent off and Mabouka is sent off as he was the one that committed the foul. Siani must have talked himself into the book.
Great cross over and a super effort with the diving header from Timo Werner. Germany cruising it.
GOAL! Chile have leveled it now and that should wrap up their passage through to the semis.
GOAL !!! GERMANY TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE EXTRA MAN AND IT'S WERNER WITH HIS FIRST GOAL FOR THE GERMAN NATIONAL TEAM. HE SCORED WITH A STOOPING HEADER OFF A CROSS FROM KIMMICH. IT'S 2-0.
GOAL !!!CHILE TIE IT UP AND ARE SURELY IN THE SEMIS.
Werner is definitely one for the future. He seems to need a lot of chances to score but he could be a useful squad player.
For the first time in a while , Chile got their one touch passing right . A cross from Mena was headed down and Martin Rodriguez, a sub, scored his first goal for Chile.
Nearly a second for Chile as Alexis got behind the Aussie back four, but his pass into the box was hooked off the line for a corner.
Jerome Guhotta is on for the disappointing Makandjou.
Bailey Wright, of Bristol City, is on for Trent Sainsbury.
OH!!!! A superb through ball from Troisi is volleyed wide by MacLaren with just Bravo to beat.
Benjamin Heinrichs is on for Sebastian Rudy,
Pablo Hernandez has been booked for Chile.
Silva clears for an Aussie corner.
The Germans win a corner
Demirbay is replaced by Brandt.
GOAL !!!!! ABOUBAKR PULLS ONE BACK FOR TEN MAN CAMEROON
Bit of a howler from Ter Stegen there. He didn't attack that cross and Aboubakr was able to nip in with a nifty header that went through the German goalie's hands.
2-1!!
Oh - Brandt tries one and it's well saved.
A great cross from the right and nightmare moment from Ter Steegen has aAbouBakr beat him to a cross that he should have gathered . The replay showed he nipped in at the near post and a tame header went in off of Ter Steegen's palms.
Ondoa saves from Brandt
GOAL! Werner restores the German's two-goal lead just as Chile had a chance to return to the top of the group.
3-1!
GOAL !! WERNER WITH HIS SECOND AS GERMANY NOW LEAD 3-1. BRANDT AND HEINRICHS PLAYED A ONE TWO DOWN THE RIGHT THEN PASSED FOR WERNER TO FINSIH FIRST TIME FROM CLOSE RANGE EASY PEASY.
The final roll of the dice from both coaches as Ekambi is on for Bassagog and Younes of Ajax, is on for Drexler of PSG.
Meanwhile Ryan McGowan is wearing a head bandage as he sheds blood for the cause.
Oh - Werner was in for his hat-trick. Just saved.
As things stand it will be Chile vs Portugal on Wednesday and Germany vs Mexico on Thursday
Great through ball from Can and superbly blocked by Ondoa from Werner.,
Werner was a bit too enthusiastic as he was offside from a through ball.
Superb save by Ondoa from Younes off a nice pass from Brandt
OH!!! Nice one two between Younes and Plattenhardt. It results in a corner.
Four minutes of stoppage time in both matches.
This one seems to be heading for a predictable end.
That's it from Sochi. Over to Moscow.
These results will mean that Chile will meet Portugal on Wednesday and Germany will meet Mexico on Thursday.
I'm off to do my Sunday errands. Cheerio, mate!
It finishes 1-1 between Chile and the Aussies and Germany defeat Cameroon 3-1 . Germany win the group with Chile as runners up.
Cheers, mate. Great chatting with you.
