Germany v. Chile
After a couple of fairly dull encounters featuring minnows (e.g., New Zealand), we're got a real cracker between two of the big players in international football in store this afternoon. It's Europe v. South America. Germany, the current World Champions v. Chile, the current Copa America holders. Join me from around 2pm onward for all of the fireworks here on the LOB!

I've pedaled home at lightening speed in a thunder storm in order to settle in to watch this marquee match up. It'll be Germany's kids against Chile's stars. Which one can hold out?
Here are the teams getting set in Kazan:
Germany - Ter Stegen, Mustafi, Hector, Ginter, Draxler, Goretzka, Stindl, Can, Sule, Kimmich, Rudy.
Chile - Herrera, Isla, Sanchez, Vidal, Hernandez, Vargas, Beausejour, Medel, Jara, Aranguiz, Diaz.
The earlier draw between the Aussies and Cameroon mean that those sides are unlikely to progress. A win for either side this afternoon win qualify them for the semi final stage.
All set to go, now.
England are also facing Poland in the U21 Championship on a busy afternoon of summer footie.
Germany hanging on to possession in the early going.
GOAL! Alexis knocks in the Chilean opener off the post.
What - not sure this one will count. It's video evidence time.
It will count. Suicidal defender from Mustafi who gave away the ball in a critical area. Odd finish from Alexis who toe poked with his left foot past a thoroughly confused Ter Stegen.
1-0 Chile!
That goal is excellent for this match, as it will draw out the Germans who probably would have been happy to play out a draw.
Oh - Draxler had a chance at the top of the box but blasted his effort well over.
Chile win a corner now. Aranguiz in and Hernandez nods safely into Ter Stegen's arms.
Really open attractive match between two good sides now.
Oh - Kimmich had a chance in the box to nod back to one of his strikers, but he nodded to the keeper.
Oh - off the bar from Chile!
Stindl picks up the match's first yellow card.
Chile have really taken the foot off the gas since scoring. Disappointing.
GOAL! The Germans are back in this one and right before the interval.
Rudy made that one, with a lovely searching pass to Hector on the left who swung in a terrific cross and Stindl was able to slide in with the finish.
1-1!
And that's half time.
We're back on for the second half now. This has definitely been the best match in this tournament so far.
England's U21s lead through a 6th minute strike by Leicester City's Demari Gray.
Chile have a free kick chance early doors. Alexis over it...
Oh - just over the bar. Clever free kick.
Vidal tried to find Vargas with a lovely ball but Hector did really well to get back to track back.
The pitch-side color commentary from the South American bint is really tedious.
Both sides seem satisfied with a score draw at this point.
A bit of a delay for an injury to Gary Medel. He may be trudging off here.
Vargas off and Rodriguez on now.
Coming down to the last minutes here at Kazan. Neither side really pressing for a winner.
Julian Brandt, who was excellent the other day against the Aussies, is preparing to come on for a late cameo.
Nearly a good one-two between Isla and Alexis.
1-0 England at half time in the U21s.
Storage time nearly up now.
And that's that. This draw means that there is something still at stake in the last two matches in this group over the weekend.
Cheerio from me!
