Chile v. Portugal Live!
The Confederations Cup enters the semi-final stage today with a real cracker. It's Chile, the Copa America holders, against Portugal, the European Championship holders - Ronaldo v. Alexis. I'm hoping for real pre-July 4th fireworks in this one and will be mightily disappointed if it's a cagey international affair. Will you be watching at 2pm EST?

Afternoon, chaps! The preamble to this match has been somewhat overshadowed by the news out of Blighty that Man Citeh have made some serious overtures toward signing Chilean superstar Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal. Cor!
The teams now preparing to come out at Kazan:
Portugal 4-4-2: Rui Patricio; Cedric, Bruno Alves, Fonte, Eliseu; Bernardo Silva, William Carvalho, Adrien Silva, Andre Gomes; Ronaldo, Andre Silva.
Subs: Jose Sa, Beto, Luis Neto, Joao Moutinho, Nelson Semedo, Danilo Pereira, Pizzi, Nani, Gelson Martins, Quaresma.
Chile 4-3-1-2: Bravo; Isla, Medel, Jara, Beausejour; Aranguiz, Diaz, Hernandez; Vidal; Sanchez, Vargas
Subs: Toselli, Herrera, Mena, Roco, Silva, Fuenzalida, Sagal, Paulo Diaz, Gutierrez, Rodriguez, Valencia, Puch.
Pepe is, of course, suspended so West Ham’s José Fonte comes into the centre of defence. Eliseu also comes in at left back, with Dortmund’s Raphael Guerreiro suffering an foot injury, although there is confusion as to whether it is a fracture or just heavy bruising.
Peeeeeeep! And we’re off!
Early free kick chance for Portugal. It eventually comes back to Skippy for a headed chance. Couldn't really get over it.
Oh - two big saves by the two respective keepers in the space of two minutes!
Really good attacking start to this one. Could already be 1-1.
Oh - Skippy is at it again, getting free on the left and putting a delicious cross over. Andre Silva has been ripping it up for the Portugeezers of late and he should have had a couple already in this match.
Bit of handbags between elder statesman Bruno Alves and Vidal.
Cedric swings in a cross, and Vidal comes through Ronaldo like a train, winning the ball cleanly but leaving the Real Madrid man on the deck.
Beausejour lets fly from distance. Low percentage effort, really.
Andre Silva went down hard after going after that headed chance. Down for treatment now. Jara has picked up a yellow.
Half an hour gone and we're still goalless here. Chile haven't really done much of anything since that opening chance for Jara.
Oh - great chance there for Vargas there. Alexis put a super cross over, Vidal went for the dramatic overhead and somehow contrived to knock it on to Vargas. Sliced it badly.
William goes into the book for a clumsy challenge on Vidal.
Hey Bob
bloody Fox can't get their sound right!! The guys are ahead of the pictures!!!
Amateur Hour
Hiya, Dave! How are you, mate? Totally agree with you on Fox. I can't believe these chumps have the World Cup rights next year.
And more after that!!
Tomorrow's game... Mexico... Gooooooooaaaaalllll crap
Thought you and Kate were going to come east and got the Saratoga racing some time?
Absolutely! When I turned on the pre-match stuff, Kate started to complain about El Presidente straight away. I promised her that he wouldn't be on the commentary today.
We're still trying to negotiate with Kate's mom, who's a racing enthusiast.
Andre Silva misses another glorious chance.
This one started out promisingly but it's fizzled in the past twenty minutes. Shame. Modern football.
This game started off quite well but now it is back to modern day possession crap
Wow, great minds think alike!!
Didn't see your comment before mine
Sad text, mate. I posted on FB that the Guardian needn't have had to write a long headline about the U21 penalty loss. All they needed to say is, "The sun came up today."
Teams out for the second half
The Panel didn't apologize about the sound
Are they just pretending it isn't happening
Thank you - the commentator calls out numpty Rob Stone for tempting fate by talking about penalties already.
Maybe they have sorted it out
Sounded better for that cross..... of course it was blocked
They're just pretending.
Atrocious effort by Gomes.... so bad
Andre Gomes has a chance - well wide.
Pablo Hernandez into the book for a hack on William.
Sound off a little still
Should have scored there
Have you got the pool open yet, mate?
Oh - great effort by Vargas saved well by Rui Patricio.
And then Skippy has a shot saved by Bravo. This game has sprung to life again.
Rui Patricio might have hit his head on the post, if the replay is accurate.
I was watching the U21s yesterday... England started off so well then just tried to hold on.... and lose on penalties
Matt was napping during the game
I woke him up and had him guess what happened.. his reply... England lost on pens?
Who do you want to win here?
Usually I root for the European teams but I think I am in the Chile corner today
Decent effort from Vidal...just over
Good block by Fonte - who the commentator is calling "Fon-tay" for some reason.
LOL! Matt is a genius!
I don't like either of these sides, really. I'm not sure that I like many international sides at this point.
Skippy hits one well over. His "technique" didn't really come off.
Skippy has another free kick chance - plays it short and it comes to nothing. What a nonsense.
Any family coming to visit this summer, mate?
Don't think so
I have tried to get some to come over but they are getting on me to go over there!
My cousin's hubby spends time in NYC with his work and is coming up this weekend
Really don't like this Latin bint who does the color commentary from pitch-side. All she talks about his the players' childhoods - I couldn't give a toss.
Well - it has been a while!
Nice counter by the Portuguese. Skippy with a deflected shot just wide. Corner.
If it works for you, I could see about coming out for the first weekend of the Premiership season. What is that - August 13?
Andre Silva is done. He had some big chances early on. My mate Nani on for a late cameo.
I really don't want extra time!!
Chile have taken the sting out of the game, knocking the ball around the back. It’s really boring.
No thoughts from you about my possibly coming out for the opening Premiership weekend?
Of course you're always welcome out here as well.
Oh, that slipped by
I think that would work
I think the Starks from North C come the following weekend
Would it just be you?
Kath and I should take a trip out there some time
You have to laugh at this Bernardo Silva bloke who Citeh have just picked up. He looks rubbish.
I'll check with Kate. It's going to depend on the timing of our Virginia trip and then the beginning of the semester stuff the next week.
Sadly, this one does look like it's headed for extra time. Shame - I'm with you. I'd like one in off the bum right about now.
Come on, Nani - knock one in for us!
Someone please score
Three stoppage time minutes to come now...sigh....
I wonder if football was this bad before but we never saw full matches all the time
Chilean fans are excited about something.
Maybe so - all we saw were the Cup Finals and the home internationals.
Bugger
Full time
Each side will get an extra sub for extra time.
We're underway again in the first period of extra time.
Gomes plays for Barca... he gets no where near the target ever!!
Useless by Bravo... dropped an easy cross there
Yet another wasted Andre Gomes shot from range.
Oh - Alexis had a huge chance. How did he miss the target with that header!?
Fin-Tay picks up a yellow for an elbow on Alexis.
Modern goalkeepers are ridiculous. Bravo was so flappy on that cross.
same ol same ol
Bravo hates to use his hands!!
It is moronic
Joao Moutinho coming on for Adrien Silva now.
Chile are playing with 10 men behind the ball and just Alexis as an outlet now. Terrible.
And into stoppage time again (sigh)....
A fourth sub can be used for extra time
I wonder if you can only use your fourth change in OT
Wonder if you can use your 3rd and 4th in extra time
These players seem knackered now - don't know why.
Ian Wright talks some sense about Claudio Bravo and El Presidente and Lalas give him trouble for it.
I don't know how Wrighty puts up with these idiots in the studio
Off again.
He's getting paid?
Good point
Can't imagine what he is going to say about these numpties on 606
Someone's getting carded now - it's Bruno Alves, big surprise.
I'll look forward to that conversation.
There was a good discussion of how rubbish these matches have been on the Guardian Football Weekly podcast with James Richardson.
Decent chance there for Chile. Fonte caught the bloke running on to the ball, Silva, but referee pointed for a goal kick. On the replay it looked as if Fonte had caught him but he did go down easily.
Kate's running a vacuum now so I can't hear the commentary. It's an improvement.
Why not just try and score instead of going down
Chile hits the woodwork TWICE!!
Oh - off the bar from Vidal! And then off the bar against from Rodriguez. How did that not go in?!
Isla trudging off and Fuenzalida on for penalties. One minute of stoppage time to come.
Penalties...(sigh)...
If this goes on any longer, MUR will get home from work!
Vidal to take first for Chile....
Scores! 1-0 Chile.
Quaresma up for Portugal.....
Saved by Bravo - rubbish penalty.
Advantage Chile
Aranguez up next....
Scores! 2-0!
Joao Moutinho needs to score this one....
Saved Bravo! About the same spot too.
I guess Wright was WRONG
Alexis pops in the third one for Chile!
3-0!
Matt thinks he's going to chip it
My boy, Nani to save things for Portugal....
Bravo saves again! Chile are on to the Final!
Unbelievable..... Portugal failed to score any penalty!!!
Bravo is the hero of the hour and no doubt Big Red will be rubbing it in Wrighty's face.
The first two were easy saves but the last one was really good.
Boy they are going to give it to Wrighty
Chile are getting into the habit of winning on penalties now.
Sunday's final in St Pete
Is the next year's final in St Pete or is it in Moscow
That's it for me, mate. Nice chatting with you.
Three atrocious penalties!!!!!
Take Care Bob
