Raffa Marquez is skippering Mexico and Bob's beloved Nani is skippering Portugal. Skippy is absent due to family reasons
The Third Place match has kicked off from Moscow. Mexico in all white and Portugal in their traditional all maroon.
Uribe Peralta wins an early corner.
As it turns out he did not.
Skippy out due to the birth of twins: One boy and one girl. Young Gelson Martins replaces him in the starting lineup.
Portugal win an early free kick. The free kick is off a one man wall for a corner.
The VAr is being used as Raffa Marquez clearly appeared to foul Andre Silva in the box off a superb pass from the halfway line from Moutinho.
AND PENALTY!!!! WELL DONE VAR!
Marquez booked, but he should have been sent off.
WOW!!!!OCHOA SAVES THE PENALTY FROM ANDRE SILVA THEN OFF THE SHORT CORNER NANI MISSES A REAL SITTER AS HE HEADS OVER A GREAT CROSS WITH A FREE HEADER FROM TWO YARDS OUT
Pizzi drags a shot wide after tackling Chicha, who is not used to defending.
Semedo is booked for as nasty foul from behind on Chicha
Layoun whipped in the free kick and it clipped off of Marquez and was saved by Rui Patricio
The annoying announcer said that if Marquez scores that he will be the oldest player to score in a Confeds Cup, which would break the record held by Lothar Mattheus, who is part of the Fox studio crew.
OH!!! Chicha nearly scores as he collected a pass from Carlos Vela and cut in. Rui Patricio superbly tipped over a pile driver from Chicha.
Layoun blocks a close range effort from Pizzi for a Portugal corner. The corner is curled in , but eludes everyone and goes out for a goal kick
OH!!! Portugal nearly take the lead off a short corner. Gelson Martins crossed and Uribe Peralta heads out off the side netting nearly for an embarrassing OG.
A minute of stoppage time.
Nani wins a corner off of Luis Reyes.
The corner is headed out and it's 0-0 at the end of a rainy half. Portugal came closest to scoring when Ochoa saved a penalty from Andre Silva.
The second half is underway from rainy Moscow.
A great chance for Portugal as Gelson Martins plays a one two with Andre Silva then slices a volley just wide of the on rushing Ochoa.
GOAL !!!MEXICO TAKE THE LEAD. URIBE PERALTA PLAYED A NICE PASS DOWN THE LEFT TO CHICHA. HE WENT PAST SEMEDO THEN PLAYED A PASS INTO THE BOX THAT WENT OFF OF NETO FOR AN OG AS HE WAS PRESSURED BY CARLOS VELA.
Moutinho shoots wide off a ten pass possession.
The first substitution of the match as Hirving Lozano is on for Uribe Peralta.
Interesting that the first change was made on the hour mark,
OH!!!! Ochoa tips over a close range header from Gelson Martins. Nani heads wide off the corner with another free header.
Portugal should have tied it up. Great combo play between Moutinho and Andre Silva as Moutinho played Andre Silva down the left and hios cross was headed on by Moutinho that led to the header from Martins producing that great save from Ochoa . The a corner from Pizzi resulted in another missed sitter from Nani.
Carlos Vela with a volley just wide after a cross from Hirving Lozano was headed out.
Like for like as Quaresma is on for Nani, who hands the Captain's armband to Moutinho.
Johnny 2 Saints on for Gaurdado, giving Mexico one 2 Saints against Portugal , ,managed by Fernie One Saint.
The final rolls of the dice from Fernie One Saint as Adrien Silva is on for Moutinho and Andre Gomes Addams is on for Danilo as Pepe becomes the third Portugese captain this match
Rui Patricio blocks a close range effort from Chicha from a narrow angle off a pass from Carlos Vela then Vela has a long range effort straight to Rui Patricio.
The final roll of the dice from Osorio as Raul Jimenez is on for the exhausted Chicha.
Four minutes of stoppage time.
GOAL !!!! RUDDY NORAH PEPE TIES IT UP WITH A WELL PLACED HEADER. WE'RE HEADED TO ET!
It was from open play and the first decent cross of the match from Quaresma and Pepe with a superb volley that would have made Skippy proud.
It's ET as it's 1-1 thanks to a superb volley from Pepe seconds into stoppage time.
Portugal is not stranger to ET as three out of four knockout matches on their way to the Euro triumph went that way and bot have this tournament. That's five out of six if you'e keeping track.
William Carvalho becomes the fourth sub for Portugal as he's on for Pizzi . That's a really defensive move from Fernie One Saint.
ET is underway
I think teams are allowed a fourth substitution in this tournament if the match goes to ET.
Raul Jimenez has a shot deflect for a Mexican corner.
OH!!!! The corner was headed on and Lozano at the far post, has his close range effort well blocked by Rui Patricio.
While Portugal were clearing, Raul Jimenez was booked for a cheap shot off the ball.
This is the fourth consecutive third place Confeds Cup match to go to ET, so I guess this should have been expected.
Also, These two finished tied a fortnight ago, so everything was pointing to ET.
Hector Moreno is booked for a foul on Adrienne Silva about thirty yards from goal.
The left footed free kick from Eliseo has plenty of pace , but is about a foot And a half over.
PENALTY PORTUGAL AS LAYOUN IS CALLED FOR HAND BALL OFF A PASS FROM GELSON MARTINS. THE MEXICAN DEFENSE FAILED TO INITIALLY CLEAR A ROUTINE CROSS.
Definite hand ball. Will Portugal score this time from the spot?
GOAL !!!!!! THE FIFTH TIME IS THE CHARM AND A TEXTBOOK PENALTY AS ADRIENNE SILVA SENT OCHOA THE WRONG WAY WITH A POWERFUL WELL PLACED SPOT KICK. PORTUGAL LEADS 2-1.
A minute of ET in the first half of ET.
Quaresma has a shot come off of Ochoa and out for a corner as he was set up by William Carvalho on a counter. That does it as it's ht of ET.
Osorio makes his fourth substitution as Marco Fabian is on for Raffa Marquez. Second half of ET is underway
AND IT'S STARTS WITH FIREWORKS AS PORTUGAL IS NOW A MAN DOWN AS SEMEDO IS SENT OFF FOR A SECOND YELLOW FOR A BOOT TO THE HEAD OF RAUL JIMENEZ.
It was actually on Hirving Lozano. Hector Moreno now wears the Captain's armband for Mexico as it's an obvious much needed attacking move from Osorio. Will Portugal hold on now that they're a man down? Andre Silva wins a Portugal corner off of Arujo.
Quaresma has a shot deflect off of Hector Moreno and go inches over for nearly a third goal.
WOW !!!! now ten against ten as Raul Jimenez is off for a second yellow. He was booked minutes before ET as it was high boot on Eliseo , who overreacted to make sure the ref saw.
A superb rocket of a long range volley from Gaurdado is superbly turned away by Rui Patricio.
The Mexican bench wants a penalty as Hector Moreno appeared to be pushed by Pepe off a close range header. Nothing doing.
Osorio was a bit too volatile in his protests and has been sent off by the Saudi ref.
Into ET of ET.
Two minutes of ET in ET.
That volley was by Herrera, not Guardado.
Andre Silva is down supposedly injured, but probably wasting time.
It's over and Portugal win the Third Placed match 2-1 in ET.
Hopefully, there will be more people around to chat during the final this afternoon.
Morning, MUR - sorry I missed you and the early one. We had a late night out and I skipped the match for a lie in. But I shall be around for the later festivities. Thanks for getting us started.
Cheers, mate. Looking forward to enjoying the pleasure of your company.
The opening act is over and now time for the main event from St. Pete: The Final between Germany and Chile.
I'm back after a morning of washing out cabinets and miscellany in the driveway. Looking forward to a relaxing afternoon watching the footer with you, mate.
Here are the teams getting ready in the tunnel:
Chile (4-3-1-2, obviously): Bravo; Isla, Medel, Aranguiz, Jara; Hernandez, Diaz, Beausejour; Vidal, Vargas, Sanche.
Germany (3-5-2, natch): Ter Stegen; Ginter, Rudiger, Mustafi; Kimmich, Rudy, Goretzka, Draxler, Hector; Stindl, Werner.
So Germany make one change, Mustafi in for Henrichs; Chile make no changes.
Glad you are able to have a break from the projects. It should be a fairly even match.
The national anthems and FIFA for some reason, think they can decide how long a country's national anthem is? They're horrible.
They're off from Tampa.
Chile get us underway then in the final - let's have some goals, lads!
Sorry. I meant St. Pete.
Nice one, mate. Took me a while to put Tampa/St. Petes together. LOL!
Alexis has the first chance to pull the trigger but rather scuffs his shot wide of the mark.
Cheers, mate. Just to let you know that the winners of this tournament have never won the World Cup the following year. I guess that makes this match absolutely meaningless.
It is. I've always seen things as a means of seeing some up and coming talent and as pure spectacle. I wish they didn't take it so seriously.
Oh - Chile nearly take the lead!
Hiya Chaps. I find this German boy Stindl especially eye-catching.
Great tackle by Rudiger on Aranguiz then a superb close range block by Ter Steegen
The crowd is buzzing due to this attractive opening period. Chile really pressing their claim early doors.
Good afternoon, Gooner . Great to enjoy the pleasure of your company. Both Werner and Stindl have had great tournaments.
The Germans will be hard pressed to play out of the back.
Hiya, Gooner! Great to have you on board. The German who's really fascinated me this time is Timo Werner from Leipzig. He seems to need an awful lot of chances to score but he does get himself into scoring positions a lot. If he has another good Bundesliga season, he might be a Miroslav Klose type for the Germans and a decent shout for the Golden Boot.
Vidal wide from long range after a German player was picked off again by the high press.
Stindl takes me back to how excited I was about the potential of Aaron Ramsey way back when.
Definitely so. I think he and Stindl and joint leading scorers in this tournament.
Where is he playing?
Exactly. Werner has a creditable number of strikes in this tournament but hot as many as he surely should have. He's just a kid so I may eat my words later.
Stindl at Monchegladbach
Germans seem to be pinned back early doors. Are Chile good enough to win the World Cup next season? Or have they peaked a bit too soon. It's a tight unit, but I wonder if a couple of big money transfers (e.g., Alexis away from the Arse) might unsettle the side. They'll be one to watch, for sure.
Vargas with a long range effort about a yard over.
Alexis picks off fellow Gunner, Mustafi , off a short goal kick that leads to a Chile corner.
Chili must not be a staple of German cuisine as they are finding Chile too hot to handle.
Oh - Goretzka coughs up the ball in a terrible position, allowing Vargas in for a shot. Ter Stegen was behind it.
Goretzka is the latest to have his pocket pick and Ter Steegen makes a comfortable save from Vargas.
Aranguiz heads out a cross from Stindl for a German corner off a pass from Goretzka./
Mustafi heads high and wide from the corner,.
Stindl finally got down the right and swung a cross in - results in a corner that Mustafi nods over.
Beating Germany today would go some way to convincing me that Chile has the wherewithal to win Putina '18. I was entertained as hell to see how completely shite Russia was in this event. Infantino's laundry bill might go up significantly now.
How irritating is this Maria on the sideline, with her inane comments about the players' childhoods.
Goretzka of Schalke and Brandt of Leverkusen are also promising youngsters.
The Fox panel was gossiping earlier about how Diego Maradona is meeting with Putin about the possibility of taking over as Russia manager. That could be entertaining!
I really liked the look of Brandt in their opening against the Kiwis, but he hasn't played consistently.
Maria is extremely annoying. IO agree, Gooner. Russia was absolutely horrible. I don't see how they will qualify of the knockout stages unless they are in an extremely weak group.
Oh - interesting training pitch free kick ended with Isla with a decent chance - he completely mishit it.
Sound off with the epic Pains of being Pure At Heart record blaring in the background. One more day before my personal noise monitor returns to Alex and I'm making the most of it.
In terms of Maradonna , I will believe it when I see it.
Oh - complete howler from Ter Stegen allowed Alexis in for a tap in, but he somehow contrived to mishit it. Should have been 1-0 Chile.
GOAL! Stindl scores a tap in against the run of play!!
Draxler has his pocket picked and Ter Steegen makes a superb save from Aranguiz then Alexis gets the rebound all wrong.
GOAL !!! STINDL GIVES GERMANY THE LEAD COMPLETELY AGAINST THE RUN OF PLAY.
Chile pressed the self-destruct button there, with Diaz too casual from the goalkeeper's roll out, allowing Werner in. He unselfishly passed sideways to Stindl to tap home.
1-0 Germans!
Well, that goal should open the match up even more. Great start to this match!
i'm tuned into the investigation of doping in the Russian squad. It wasn't particularly performance enhancing, that's for sure. Dank, dank, herb is my suspicion.
An absolute gift from Marcello Diaz as he gifted the ball to Werner just outside his box and Werner passed to Stindl to tap into an empty net.
Oops, that defender really made a right Jeff Agoos of it to hand Germany the lead through a tap-in.
The Russian players may be found not guilty because if they're accused of taking performance enhancing drugs then they can claim their performances were anything but enhanced.
Vargas had a chance to play Vidal or Alexis in but selfishly shot straight at Rudiger.
Great last ditch tackle by Medel off a solo run from Draxler.
Goose will never live down that error against Jamaica, eh?
Drxler nicks it off Medel and Werner made his run just too early to avoid another Christmas in July gift
it's a bit Bambi auf eis at the back for Germany which given that Mustafi is one of them is giving me great distress.
He made more errors than an error prone person.
Oh - great move there from Chile led to an inviting cross that Diaz was just not tall enough to power home.
Sounds like you've had experience watching Mustafi in action.
You betcha. I have seldom experienced the dramatic loss of oxygen from a stadium as that Derby County numptie bashed it in. Like a sudden loss of pressure in an airplane.
Alexis lucky to not pick up a yellow there for late one.
I tend not to write off a new player after one season, but Mustafi is not justifying his place in a back 3 ahead of Holding.
Sounds about right . That's what I observed as well
Mustafi seems better when he's playing for Arsenal then when playing internationally. Perhaps he doesn't get on with his German mates?
So who would be your back three? Gabby, Koz and the new bloke?
I agree. I'm not sure why he's Holding a place in the starting lineup. The same can be said about Gabriel whose defending is anything but that of a Sledge Hammer.
Chicha plays for Bayer because he's a real pill! Definitely not a cure for a headache.
One - Goretza was in there, but he just missed wide left. Diaz again was at fault.
OH!!!! Just wide by Goretzka off a pass from Rudy, who got a pass from Draxler after Diaz coughed up possession yet again
Ouch - a twofer Arsenal pun. That was bad, MUR.
I think that's a pretty likely formation as the season marches on. It's probably Holding on the bench with Koz and Kolasinic with Mustafi. I'm also not crazy about what that means for Hector and Nacho.
Isla clears for a corner after a poor touch from Werner off a German counter.
Oh - Werner was found by Goretzka so well. Should have taken it with his left foot, but a bad touch with his right allowed the defender to get back.
I thought that Bellerin was want-away?
I kinda liike Gabby back there. He could still develop into a Lauren tyoe of defender. He's got the hard-ham bit down already.
Thanks , Bob. I said Kos I was talking about the Gunners
OH!!! Just wide by Draxler off a pass from Werner.,
it all started with a nice long ball out of the back from Hector.
Alexis heads a cross from Vargas straight up into the air and it's easily gathered by Ter Steegen after some poor defending by Chelsea bound Rudiger.
I bet Hector does want away because he doesn't see where he fits in a 3 at the back system. I would like an early indication that the 3 back system was a finger in the dike and that we'll be back with a back 4 again. Given the disarray the club are in and the very angry fans, it's not surprising that those perpetual predators from Spain and Citeh are looking to pick us apart.
Oh - another great chance there for Goretzka, who like Werner isn't confident about his left peg. I have a suggestion for the next drill for the German side. My goodness!
OH!!! Bravo blocks a close range effort from Goretzka after the ball was gifted to Draxler. Similar to the one when the goal was scored.
Germany is one up at the half and now I know what they mean by Christmas in July.
Peep! It's half-time and this first half just flew by. Finally, we've got a spectacle on our hands. Nicely set up for the second half, too.
The second half is underway from St. Pete.
Medel with the latest giveaway to Draxler. Nothing comes of it.
How many yellows would Vidal get if the refs actually handed out cards for disrespect? 6? 8? double digits" He's a walking whining advertisement for FIFA sin bins.
Probaly almost as many as the number of tatoos he wears.
The next tournament is the Gold Cup, which starts on Friday.
Alexis goes on a solo run and puts in a poor cross. Then the charitable Marcello Diaz is replaced by Leo Valencia. German fans will not be pleased.
A root beer float has just arrived at my side as I settle back in for the duration of the second half.
I agree with you about Vidal, mate. He's a nasty sod.
Beausejour is the latest with the gift giving as he gifts possession to Kimmich and it culminates in a great save by Bravo from Drxler.
I haven't had a root beer float in years. That's one of my childhood favorites. Enjoy.
Kimmich is down for the count after a clash with Beausejour.
Nice one Katie!
A tad naughty by Beausejour on Kimmich, who is down injured,
Now some handbags between Kimmich and Bravo. Emre Can isn't even on the pitch and he's involved. Should be some cards flying around presently.
The free kick is headed down and eventually cleared.,Then Kimmich and Vidal, the two Bayern players , are involved in a fight and each gets away with a booking.
We ordered a pizza the other night and they bollixed up the order so they comped us the pizza and two 2-liter bottles of root beer. We've been having root beer floats every afternoon since. Lovely!
I winder why Bravo wasn't booked. Carlo Ancelotti will not be pleased to see two of his p[layers fighting with each other. The announcer said they will laugh about it on the Bayern training field. These types of incidents are horrible for team morale.
Aranguiz gets away with pushing Kimmiuch in the back of the neck then Chile win a corner.
Ter Steegen punches away the corner from Valencia, not BArca.
Stupid of Kimmich, but pretty inevitable from Vidal
Well done . Enjoy the floats.
Yeah - more of the mouth from Vidal, you'll notice.
It's getting ridiculously chippy out there now. Nasty elbow to the jaw on Werner. Where are the VAR crew now?
OH!!! Jara elbows Werner in the face. Why aren't they reviewing it?
The referee does seem to be conferring with the VAR now. should be a red.
Vidal asking the ref to hurry up the throw so they don't review it. Too late. It's being reviewed.
Not sure why Jara is seeing the funny side of it.
Wow - only a yellow. Ridiculous call. Jara should have gone off for that one, for sure.
BLOODY HELL ! Why just a yellow? Dr. Joe is mystified. We are too.
Now a German free kick and some ping pong before the ball breaks to Bravo.
I was just about to say that the ref's done well to keep 11 men apiece on the pitch but he missed that elbow and then after the VAR doesn't send off the elbowy Chile guy.
The former Baggie got away with one there.
Is there anyone else on the LOB who would have remembered that Jara played for WBA? Nice one, Statto!
Mustafi tackles Vargas for a Chile corner.
Cheers, mate. Goretzka fouled by former Evil Cardiff player, Evil Gary.
Germans just trying to manage the match at this point.
Oh - mad scramble in the German box. Alexis wound one up but it was expertly blocked by Rudy.
Two great German blocks off great Chile chances.
Now you're just showing off, mate! Cardiff City! LOL!
There should be chances for Germany on the counter as Chilean players are chasing the match.
Cheers, mate. Some Pre Gold Cup entertainment.
Vargas with a tame effort right at Ter Steegen.
Emre Can be readied to come on - he's an effective destroyer in this kind of situation.
I'd bring in your boy Brandt to beef up the German mid. They won't avoid an equalizer with this rope a dope act.
Oh - a dodgy punch from Ter Stegen kept a Chile move going. Vargas went down easily looking for a pen and then Alexis blasted one that Ter Stegen tipped over.
Vidal has a shot deflected for a corner after Ter Steegen flapped at a routine cross. Vargas has talked himself into the book after claiming Alexis had been fouled in the box.
The referee should not be reviewing these incidents at players' insistence.
Now it's being reviewed and it's a corner . Now the Germans counter off the corner.
