A Little Saturday Night Footer Action
It may be the middle of summer but the football keeps coming hard and fast. We've got a mid-summer night's double header tonight, starting with the US team taking on Nicaragua in their final group match of the Gold Cup. Bruce Arena's boys have notched a draw and a win in group play but haven't exactly been lighting it up. Perhaps tonight will be the night for them to unleash the hounds.
That's followed at 10pm by a summer tour event between Manchester United and the LA Galaxy. That will give us a chance to see what Jose Mourinho has in mind when the Premier League starts up in a month's time. Join me tonight for all the action on FXX and ESPN2.

Hello, Bob. Thanks for the post. Panama just defeated Martinique 3-0. The U.S. needs to win by three or more goals to win the group. Due to this result, seven out of eight quarterfinalists have been determined.
Hey Boys,
I can't believe three groups of four.... 12 teams...gets whittled down to 8...only the bottom side doesn't make it!! A bit of a waste of time for the group stages
Here are the Quarters
Costa Rica v Group B runner up
Group B winner vs A/C third place
Group C winner vs Group A/B Hird place
Group C runner up v Canada
Makes no sense to me
I'm about to eat some tacos...I'll be back for kick off... or a bit afterward
Two out of the three third place teams make it
That every team qualifies thing, the guaranteed home crowd for the USA, makes this a really Mickey Mouse event.
But before we get to that, did anyone else notice that the background music for the Zusi profile was by a band called "Misterwives?" All the good band names are taken I guess, but that's particularly lame.
Howdy lads.
Good evening, UWS. Look forward to chatting with you soon.
Good evening, Gooner. I don't see the need to make this a dozen team tournament. Eight is more than enough.
This anthem "Salve te, Nicaragua" should be called "Save it Nicaragua." It's brief, but sounds like it's a 20 cymbal attack.
In these days of so called political correctness, the three North American teams automatically qualify , four from the Caribbean, four from Central America , and the playoff winner between the fifth placed Central American team and the fifth placed Caribbean team. Bloody effin ridiculous.
Clevelanders avoiding this in droves. Why all the empty seats?
I agree, my adviser. That also pertains to their participation in this mickey mouse tournament.
Agreed. Cleveland doesn't rock this evening.
They're off from Cleveland.
The U.S. needs to win by three or more goals to win the group.
Evening, lads. I hope you've got as glorious a summer evening as we're having here in WNY. Hoping for a better show from this lot tonight.
Hello my left hand man. It's a typically hot sunny July day here in South Texas.
I'm disappointed in the Cleveland folks - what else do they have going on this evening?
Agreed, mate. All the Saturday night action starts after sunset.
Proud to be part of your posse, MUR!
Oh I wish that referee would book that guy for dicking around with our restart.
Glad to have you and Steve as key members of my cabinet.
Peralta clears for a U.S. corner.
Kellyn Rowe with the first U.S. shot of the match straight at Hugo Llorente.
Decent pressure from the Yanks early doors.
Hey Guys
Dinner done but I do have some work in our dining room...trying to fix it up
I will comment when I can for this match but here for all of LA v Man U
They advertised the match during Wimpleton coverage and Chris Fowler said... Go Galaxy... I don't like Man U... Do you Jon Mac?...Go Chelsea.
I don't like him anymore!
What's wrong with Fowler. So much for being neutral. Look forward to hearing from you soon,
The Nicaraguans have a guy with a name dangerously close to Covfefe.
Bit of a scare there for the Yanks. Not liking it.
How were those tacos, mate?
Sacks McCarty has his pockets picked and Galleano is not too far off from 25 yards out. A warning for the U.S.
Man! Bill Hamid must be wishing he was protected by the ineptitude of DC United's back line after that loose Zusi cross across his own area.
Oh - Dwyer in on the keeper - well blocked.
Sounds like a leak, my adviser.
Luis Perralta booked for a foul on Bedoya.
That yellow for Peralta was inevitable and justly deserved.
Rowe with a shot into the side netting. It was always going to be a reach to score from that angle.
Decent hit there from Pereira. Zusa coughed up the ball far too easily.
A poor defensive header from Zusi and Herrera is wide with a long range effort.
Little Suzi should flipping wake up. That was another really poor display of technique.
OH!!! Zusi picks up a loose ball in midfield, goes on a solo run , then shoots straight at the keeper.
Oh - Zusi had a great chance there, working his way across the box for a left-footed shot. Straight down the keeper's throat.
Well stated and great musical reference.
Hate the camera angle by the way
Welcome back, UWS. How were the tacos? I cooked chicken legs in the toaster oven.
Covfefe with a senseless foul. Bang it in for a goal, USA
Pontius with a bicycle kick over off a free kick.
The Union are leading vs Swansea as I type
Union hosting at Prem team the same day United playing LA just like when I went to the Union v Everton match and listening to United's 7-0 vs LA
Pontius with an acrobatic effort.
I still claim that is a security leak. As my adviser, do you concur?
Off for walkies with Shadow and then work in the DR
I'll be back
3-0 before an 11-man switch in the 2nd half is the score to beat UWS.
United play again on Monday night in Utah. I will be available to chat during that match , but not the one Thursday in Houston.
Cheerio, UWS!
Have fun, UWS. Sparky will need his walkies later on this evening.
A security leak on par with the Trump administration, MUR? What would Covfefe think? Was he at the meeting with Don, Jr?
Being held 0-0 by these mugs is absolutely embarrassing.
Dwyer looks like he's feeling frustrated already. That 3-0 margin looks like a steep one to match.
I was thinking Don, Jr. or Don Corleone, but what would be the difference?
That's not fake news.
Don Corleone was a smart man.
Off to take Melanie to the Harlingen Community Theater. She is an instrumentalist in " Beauty and the Beast." Should be back around halftime.
Then it was Don, Jr. That's why your my adviser.
What would be the consequences of finishing second in the group. Meeting Mexico in the quarters?
Be our guest MUR
Cheerio, mate. Enjoy the production!
I thought I heard one of these wakadoos say our opponent would be the Ticos.
When this lot speaks in terms of Juan Agudelo being an attacking solution for the second half, my head sinks a bit.
That would make sense. Should we fear the Ticos?
It's begging for the Acosta and Morris switch for Pontius and probably Bedoya.
Decent idea for Rowe to play that off the chest. Just didn't come off.
This lot barely got by Martinique. What do you think?
GOAL! Joe Corona opens the scoring!
I thought that Corona might have missed his chance by over-elaborating after the cut back from Bedoya. But he somehow squeezed that underneath the defender and beyond the keeper.
1-0 US!
Jammy, jammy goal, but I'll take it. And two more, please.
I thought Corona had bollixed it up. Replay shows a kindly Nicaraguan deflection.
That's something to build on now. One more before half-time, please.
Very kind deflection.
Good - it's about time that the yellows started coming out. Nicaraguans getting a bit chippy.
Oh yeah. Chippy seems to be a squad inclusion imperative. They played us at RFK in the McBride years and played him like he was a piñata.
What we couldn't do with a Brian McBride right about now!
Peep peep! That's half time. Not really good enough but you could still see us running out 3-0 winners tonight.
Right. That's the half. See you the other side.
We still haven't found a McBride replacement.
I'm back for the second half and agree. We need two more goals or else we face a decent Ticos team in the quarters.
The second half is underway
Back on for the second half. No changes from Arena. One for Nicaragua - Peralta off and Hurtado on.
Good to have you back. How was Melanie's performance?
Bob will be pleased that I'm drinking some Sam Adams Fresh as Helles
How is that new Sam Adams?
Elizabeth and I had complementary tickets during the opening night ten days ago . The performance was excellent . I just dropped her off this evening.
What instrument does Melanie play?
That's a good one Al-Prez. Nobel Pils is another one of theirs that's really good.
It's pretty tasty. It has a hint of citrus taste, which distinguishes it from the Summer Ale. I could only find it at that one CVS., of all stores. Go figure.
YES! Penalty to the US!
HAHAHAHA. soft as hell.
Bit soft but I'll take it. Dwyer stepping up to take it.
PENALTY U.S.CHRIS PONTUS BROUGHT DOWN BY LOPEZ, WHO SHOULD BE SENT OFF FOR DENYING A GOAL SCORING OPPORTUNITY
Oh - saved by the keeper. Didn't look convincing the first time around. Not good at all on the replay. Good height for the keeper and not far enough in the corner.
Bloody Hell. Llorente pushes away a powerfully struck penalty by Dwyer . Too close to the center of the goal.
And now another good chance. Covfefe's picked up a yellow now.
Strewth! How is it we can't pot a penalty any more. These scrubs are so shite.
Covfefe booked for a foul a foot outside the Nick box.
Dwyer shoots into the wall off a short free kick from Little Susie.
Rowe can't exit fst enough for me. Acosta and Morris, please.
Little Susie needs to wake up right about now.
Shut up Landycakes. You never took a penalty without that elaborate Vatican rag, every time. That should have been McCarty on that penalty. He belts it into the corner.
YES! Rowe pops in the second at the near post. His first international goal.
2-0!
YESSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! ROWE , ROWE ,, ROWE YOUR BOAT JUST INSIDE THE NEAR POST.
Oh no. It would have to be Rowe which means he'll litter up the sabs bench for ages now. 2-0, but please get him off the pitch.
Bedoya laid that one on a plate for Rowe. He's had the killer ball for both goals.
Oh - that was a bit too close for comfort there. Decent hit from the Nicaraguan.
Ryan Garcia has a long range volley deflected just wide after Rowe heads away a Nick free kick
Corona picks up a silly yellow card.
Joe Corona is booked and will be suspended for the quarterfinal.
The U.S. need one more goal to top the group.
Time for a water break as a couple of players are down receiving treatment.
Should be fairly easy from here on out.
Back to the goal. The U.S. high pressed the Nick defense , who were trying to be too cute . Bedoya won the ball, played a one two with Dwyer , then passed to Rowe, who beat the keeper at his near post.
Rowe off - Gooner will be pleased. But it's Arriola on for him.
Arriola is on for Rowe.
Another penalty for the US!!!!!
The Nipple? Rowe should leave, but Acosta should be bossing our mid now.
PENALTY !!! U.S. AS CANEDA IS CALLED FOR HAND BALL.
Bedoya won the penalty by sticking the ball into the armpit of the Nick defender. Corona to take....
Penalty. And Dwyer up again. In the corner Mush.
Oh dear - that one was even worse! Easily saved.
Llorente must think it's Christmas in July.
DAMN!!! THE SECOND PENALTY SAVE BY THE NICK KEEPER AS A POOR PENALTY BY CORONA IS SAVED THEN THE REBOUND FROM PONTIUS IS BLOCKED FOR A CORNER.
Jesus! Corona's is worse than Dwyer's. Worst consecutive penalties I've seen in a match for a while.
We should be over the hills and far away at this point. Bloody hell!
It would be a shame if we fail to win the group because we failed to put away our penalties. That's what I call paying the penalty.
I think we've finally found a side that England could beat in penalty kicks!
Mad Hatter's reaction is priceless, but he's the one that picked Corona and left him on the pitch at this point. McCarty takes penalties you dunce!
Now it's Corona off and Morris on.
Two up front now - Morris and Dwyer.
The Pie Eater is on for Joe Corona.
Duh, Mad Hatter. Morris for Corona. Now give him some effin' service and put Acosta on.
It should have been two up front from the start given that we needed three goals.
More-is reminds me of Rooney's physique
He does have a big bum, yes.
If not then that will A Costa us the group.
boom-boom!
Hopefully, he's not as mind numbingly frustrating as the former United player.
Ruddy Norah... how does a national team miss TWO penalties!!
I've been watching it from a distance... thank god!!
Twenty minutes for us to dig this out. Still should be doable.
Has anyone noticed that Pontius is on the pitch? He's invisible
Better for your blood pressure. But welcome back, UWS.
Completely invisible.
Welcome back, UWS. Perhaps you can will a third goal for the U.S.
Cheers, Gooner. There's more where that came from.
Oh - Hamid did well there digging out a raking drive and then the follow up.
Bill Hamid made a great save from a long range effort. Gooner should be pleased.
Dwyer trots off - disappointing night for him. Agudelo on for him.
The final roll of the dice from the Mad Hatter as Aguedelo is on for Dwyer.
Textbook Bill. A good save, but coughs it up dangerously to eventually bravely collect if from an on rushing forward.
Indeed - Hamid was on that shot like UWS on a plate of tacos.
Aguedelo - 3 goals in 26 appearances. Not so good.
BOOM, BOOM, Bob.
Pffffft. Aguadelo on . Who's going to put the ball in for him?
Don't like them going to this woman on the sideline.... such a waste of time!!
HAHAHA. Nice.
Sparky is asking for walkies, but if I take him now then I will miss that crucial third goal, knowing my luck.
Jenny Taft is ok. It's a tired formula borrowed from NFL coverage. Doesn't work here
Llorente and the Pie Eater are down after a collision, presumably racing for that last pie.
I hate that too, UWS. And she's always rabbiting on about the players' family backgrounds, as if we care whether Dax McCarty has an asthmatic sister. Sheesh!
Llorente would never survive the physical nature of the Prem.
US fans in the stands don't seem to understand that we still need another goal. It's fiesta time in The Mistake on a Lake.
It does explain why Dax has a tattoo of an inhaler on his bicep.
There was an asthmatic fly in our house, but that doesn't count because I'm not a celebrity.
Oi - UWS - time for you to visit the bog; we need a goal, mate!
BOOM BOOM. You're in top form, Bob.
Agreed. Time for a dump.
Under ten minutes for the US to avoid a quarter final with the Ticos.
Cheers, mate!
Just a reminder
30 for 30
ESPN
8 'clock
July 20
GEORGE BEST!!!
It is actually available on line right now!! I may wait for it to be on TV but I just took a peek
http://www.espn.com/watch/_/id/3121517/30-for-30--george-best--all-by-himself
Pontius doesn't even try to appeal for a pen there; he knows we wouldn't score it anyway.
Nicaragua down to ten men
Nicaragua are down to ten men! Covfefe is off! What will the Donald think?
Aguedelo goes on a solo run and is fouled by Covfefe , who is off for a second yellow. Donald Jr. and Sr. will not be pleased.
I'll check that out - thanks for the tip, UWS.
We will be reminded in those annoying tweets.
I am shocked it is already available on line on the ESPN website
Again, I think I am going to wait and watch it on TV
I am excited
I've already got my DVR set to record it
Who's going to take this one now. Zusi seems keen on it.
Unfortunately, I will not be able to watch Bestie because I will be in Houston, but thanks for the tip.
YESSSSS!!!!!!
3-0!
GOAL... nice free kick!!
About time it isn't just a shot!!
Bianco latches onto a pitch perfect ball from Little Susie to nod home his first international goal.
YESSSSSSSSSSSS!!! HEY LITTLE SUSIE AS HE CHIPS IN THE FREE KICK AND MIAZGA HEADS IN THE FREE KICK WITH A FREE HEADER FOR HIST FIRST GOAL FOR THE U.S. WHAT A TIME TO DO THAT.
Is it the same day as the match you're going to?
Definitely watch that a link I sent you
The U.S. is now top of the group on goals scored.
Bring on St. Kitts!
It is. That's the day of the Manc Derby, but I will be sure to watch the link.
only 3 minutes of added time
It has been versions of MASH out there some of the time!!
Three minutes of stoppage time.
Is the Manc derby on Telly?
It appears that we will be playing Honduras or El Salvador in the quarters.
Yes. It's on ESPN.
Ecky Thoomp!
Pontus can't be bothered to score now.
