IT'S BACK....WE ARE PREMIER LEAGUE, WE ARE PREMIER LEAGUE!!
Our summer is almost over which is always a bummer BUT on the bright side... The Premier League is BACK!!! We start on a Friday this season as Arsenal host Leicester City. Can Arsenal start a title challenge on the front foot? Can Leicester regain their title lost last season?
This season sees two newcomers to the Prem. Brighton and Huddersfield become the 48th and 49th different team to play in the league since its inception in 1992-93... Premier League... A Quarter of a Century Old!!
Join me for our opener
UWS

Good afternoon, UWS. Thanks for a perfect post. Hard to believe the Prem has been around for a quarter of a century. Back to work on Monday, so Summer is almost over. This will help brighten that. Here to join you for the beginning of what we hope will be an exciting season.
Ouch... starting school on Monday!!
NBC already started... well done
Line up as the Em
Arsenal XI: Cech, Holding, Monreal, Elneny, Bellerin, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Xhaka, Kolasinac, Ozil, Lacazette, Welbeck
Bench: Ramsey, Giroud, Ospina, Walcott, Iwobi, Mustafi, Coquelin
Leicester XI: Schmeichel, Simpson, Morgan (c), Maguire, Fuchs, Mahrez, Ndidi, James, Albrighton, Okazaki, Vardy.
Bench: Chilwell, Gray, Iheanancho, King, Hamer, Amartey, Slimani
Afternoon, chaps! I'm happy to join you from our hotel room in Syracuse hoping that I can get the stream on NBC Sports going. Thanks for the excellent thread, UWS.
What did you make of everyone's predictions?
Welcome Bob
Hope you can find a good link
More Spurs Champions pick than I thought!
Marvelous! I've got the link up and running. I never thought I'd be so happy to see Robbie Earle's mug. NBC live at pitch-side at the Emirates!
I reckon that MUR was tapping into my brain. I figure that Spurs were on fire at the end of the season. They've got loads of young talent and the top goalscorer from last year. If they stay fit, they have a decent shout.
Well done!
All I have to say is... Jamie Vardy is going to have a party.. and get me some points!
A sign of the times: Alexandre Lacazette is the only player in their starting XI with a single-digit shirt number: No 9. Mezut Ozil is next lowest with No 11, then Alex Oxlade Chamberlain with No 15 and Rob Holding with No16. Mohamed Elneny is highest with No 35. I miss the days of players wearing 1-11. It was simple.
Thanks, mate - you know I wish I were sitting in "my chair" at Casa Nocito. (sigh)... Missing you lot.
So many people picked The Gazette to score the first goal
Bob picked Welbeck
A few picked injured Sanchez!
WHR thinks there will be no goals scored in the first 9 games of the weekend until Hernandez scores at OT!!
Good afternoon, chaps. Glad to join everyone and glad that Bob has a working link.
Sure missed here. I am sitting in your chair as I type
I hope Chicha is pants on Sunday and LOL from WHR!
Sunshine was on Melanie's shoulder watching the telly and is rooting for the Foxes. Does that mean that napping Fred is rooting for the Gunners?
Sorry chaps. That would have been a great occasion.
Quite a few people picked Alexis Sanchez to be the first goalscorer in the Prem. Not I. I swapped him out for Danny Welbeck when he was left on the bench for the Community Shield, thinking that he's "want away." Of course he's not even dressed for the match today! Fairly transparent now that he'll be off before the transfer window ends. Lots of people picked Lacazette.
I think you should leave my chair unoccupied with a Tony Currie #10 Leeds shirt draped across the back. ;-)
COME ON VARDY
I will read about that in Lacazette.
The latest weather in London:
It's 66 , partly sunny , and breezy with rain expected in about 80 minutes. Please send some of that our way.
http://www.nbcsports.com/video/premier-league-back
NBC starting off great
Pitch side and at the stadium
Not on commercial and in a studio in LA
Good afternoon, Steve. Wishing you success on the opening match of the Prem season. Probably the first time ever that the English top flight has started the season on a Friday
Welcome Gooner
Agreed, UWS. I disagree with Robbie Mustoe that David Wagner will keep the Terriers up. Le Socks mad e a good point that if they only won three of their last ten matches in the Championship and were promoted with a negative goal difference then why would they do well at much more difficult level.
Great to have you on board, Gooner. Wishing your Arsenal lot all the best for this season.
Also, Bob will be hoping for a W Yorkshire rival to struggle.
15 minutes until the new season!!!!
Yes, I'm picking Huddersfield for dead last this season. Would love to see Not a Big Club relegated as well.
NBC showing all of the other poxy channels how it's done.
Live from the REAL stadium on Sunday
Great scenes from the Blind Pig pub in NYC of Arsenal fans gathering for the opening kickoff.
Absolutely. They look very professional compared to those other joke networks. You will be pleased to see that I picked the Terriers to finish dead last.
Isn't the Blind Pig Not a Big club's logo?
I saw that - well in, lad!
I thought it was a Sheffielder shagging a sheep.
Since I'm going back to work Monday, I might as well get up early tomorrow to get back in the routine.
ROTFL, mate! Absolutely.
Only a three day work week next week because I'm taking off Wednesday and Thursday to help Melanie move in her dorm.
Where are any center backs for the Arsenal?
Aren't they all full backs?
Now it's Robbie Mustoe, Graeme Le Sox and Rebecca Lowe in the studio. What happened to Robbie Earle? Has he gone off for a curry and a pint?
Are Kos and Peter Gabriel injured? There's Mustafi and Merte, who played last weekend
Good luck with the move MUR
We have guests from Charlotte coming in midweek until Sunday
The following week we are taking Jon and some friends to Boston for the weekend for a video game tourney... then my final weekend of summer
Was he suspended for a daft off the pitch incident?
I think that the new boy Kolasinac is a center back by trade. But I'm not sure that Wenger is playing him that way. He doesn't fancy center backs - we all know that.
Thanks, UWS. Enjoy the rest of your summer. Speaking of Boston, my nephew will be starting at the Berklee School of Music in Boston.
Mustafi is on the bench - it appears to be some kind of poxy back three for the Arse. Don't like it.
Teams coming out
We are almost underway
Based on the way he treated Steve Bould probably not. Mad Jens may be treated better.
Teams in the tunnel now...
Isn't Holding a center back? Probably he and Kolasinac will be in the center
I know it won't happen again, but I prefer the teams running out by themselves instead of walking out with the other team and then handshakes
Make sure that none of those guests sits in the LUFC/Tony Currie chair!
New signing , Harry Maguire must be replacing the aging Huth alongside Captain Morgan.
I agree with you. I don't like this pretense that an ordinary Premiership match is like an international with sides coming out together, an anthem playing and handshakes and all that nonsense. Next thing we know they'll be exchanging pennants.
We are off!!
COME ON VARDY!!
Uh oh - "coverage will resume shortly"....
Ah - we're back!
The 2017-2018 Prem season is underway from the EM.
"Football is back!" Marvelous!
UWS going for the eewok!
I think I may be slightly behind the two of you on the telly.
I've been watching vids of 70s and 80s
It was a contact sport back then
Not Wellie done by Captain Morgan as Mike Dean blows for the first foul of the new season.
Danny Welbeck is upended early doors by Captain Morgan.
HOLY CRAP!!!!
THE GAZETTE SCORES!!!
SO MANY POINTS FOR SO MANY
THE FIRST GOAL OF THE NEW SEASON . I MISSED IT BUT WILL READ ABOUT IT IN LACAZETTE.
GOAL! Lacazette makes it 1-0 in a matter of 2 minutes!
Sorry. I'll delay
oooh, almost 1-1
Great hit
POINTS!
Nearly the equalizer as the Gunners struggled to defend the throw from Fuchs. It was headed out and Mahrez volleyed just wide.
I was just thinking that Arsenal never just ding a cross in to a target man but rather piss about all over the area when Elneny tossed in a lovely ball. And what a headed finish!
Oh - Mahrez could have leveled it. Great start to this match.
The Gunners clear for a Foxes corner. taken short and
GOAL !!!! 1-1 OKAZAKI HEADS IN A CLOSE RANGE EQUALIZER.
Bloody hell - the Japanese Okazaki has leveled it! Wow! What a start!
GORDON BENNETT!!!
1-1!!!
two goals in four minutes!!
Loving it
Attacking football...who'da thunk it
Gooner, MUR, Red Dragon, The Saint, Simon and Yellows all start off with two points for that Lacazette goal. Marvelous!
None of that modern football - this is proper stuff.
Cursing in the nation's capital and not from the President, but from the Gooner. Albrighton took a short corner and played a one two. His cross was overcooked , but new signing, Harry Maguire , did well to head across the goal instead of lettin g the ball go out of play and Okozaki headed in from a yard out. Absolutelty horrible defending from the Gunners
Oh - great run and drive from The Ox. Not too far away.
The Gunners nearly regain the lead as the Ox goes on a solo run and shoots inches over.
Arsenal need to keep attacking.
Lacazette looks really eager.
I went online and read a summary of the opening on the Lacazette website. The Gunners won a free kick in midfield and the Ox made a run down the left. He cut the ball back and a cross field pass was played to Bellerin and his cross was met with a great finish as stated in Lacazette.
Was The Gazette's goal his first touch in the Prem
Does anyone in ENY pr WNY subscribe to Lacazette? It provides really detailed info.
I think it was.
I think it was, too. A remarkable Premiership debut.
Stupid short free kick
All the big blokes came up for the free kick
Premier League
Decent cross over but handled nicely by Holding.
Ridsdale's return to ER will not be on Watch ESPN tomorrow. Instead , they are showing the Bees vs Forest and the late one, which is the Teesiders vs the Evil Blades.
Never going to call it that, mate.
The Foxes goal was off a short corner. It does work on occasion.
Looking forward to it - we need to bring the hammer down on Riddie's lot.
Agreed. That would be fantastic.
Sunshine's cage is facing the telly, but he's more interested ion grooming than the match
Leicester seem to be the team of two seasons ago and not last season
Owl Face is flagged offside for the Foxes.
Useless effort of a header from Ozil
Nice cut-back but Albrighton was fouled by Nacho.
Let's hope Lukaku starts off as fast as The Gazette
Agreed, UWS. Ndidi and Harry Maguire are the only Foxes starting players that were not part of the Prem champion team of two seasons ago.
Harry Maguire lectured for a poor foul , showing what he learned in his early career at Not a Big Club. That's what I read in Lacazette. It's an informative newspaper.
Harry Maguire gets a bollocking from Mike Dean but escapes the book for now after hacking Lacazette.
If you read one of Shakespeare's plays that you can get some insight on their title chances this season.
Nice move by the Arse
Welbeck had a shot blocked
A nice block from Harry Maguire off a shot from Wellie after some nice one touch passing from the Gunners
The Foxes lost on their last two visits to the EM due to late winners. The same today?
Welly had a chance but it was blocked nicely.
The simulation rule described by Arlo sounds complex. A two match ban in some cases and in other cases no punishment at all.
Has Vardy, the Owl Face , even touched the ball?
Welbeck should have shot many times but kept going wide!
OH!!! Wellie made a run in the box, rounded Kasper, then his pass was cut back and cleared away.
Oh - how did that not go in for the Arsenal. Great stuff from Welly.
Klasinac had a near post effort pushed around by Kasper.
Good technique from the defender there.
Celtic take the lead in a Glasgow Derby. That is at Thistle.
It's been a breathless first half hour of the Premiership. More of the same, please.
GOALL
VARDY SCORES FOR LEICESTER!
DO I GET POINTS FOR THE SECOND GOALSCORER!!!
Great cross
Goodness! Vardy nips in at the back post to hammer the second into the net. Bad stuff from the defenders.
No points, mate. Sorry.
GOAL !!! OWL FACE GIVES THE FOXES THE LEAD AGAINST THE RUN OF PLAY. SLOPPY BY THE GUNNERS GIVING THE BALL AWAY DEEP IN THEIR OWN HALF. aLBRIOGHTON GOT THE LOOSE BALL, MADE A RUN DOWN THE LEFT AND A PERFECT PASS ACROSS THE BOX WAS THUMPED IN BY OWL FACE, ALONE IN THE SIX YARD BOX.
Sorry, UWS, but I read on page three of Lacazette that Bob would not be giving you any points for that goal.
Cursing in the nation's capital?
DAMN
Mahrez is looking for more. Leicester are looking more like the side of two years ago than last season, hitting Arsenal on the break to devastating effect.
Typical Gunners as it has gone horribly wrong for Arsene as he just signed a new two year contract.
Ozaki heads it just wide
I would imagine so.
Headed inches wide by Okozaki off a great cross as it could have been a 1-3 lead for the Foxes.
Oh - Oka just wide of the post. Holding again was at fault.
Nice through ball from Beaker, but the intended target was wellie offside.
Shame - Welly was away but flagged offside.
The Gunners are guilty of not HOLDING on to their lead.
Ouch - that was a good 'un, MUR.
Cheers, mate.
Anyone pick Leicester for the league?
Europe?
How quickly we all forget
Looks like Craig Shakespeare has been tucking into the pies in the close season.
Nope - neither. I reckon that we all thought - and rightly so - that Leicester's title season was a one-off.
GaryLineker
As it stands Leicester are top of the @premierleague. When was the last time happened?
Nice move from Arsenal earns a corner.
Gunners players thought they had a penalty due to hand ball by Ndidi and the replay shows they had a good case, but Mike Dean says corner.
Big shout for a penalty - the replay shows that it could easily been given.
The Gazette matched the fastest goal to start the season of 94 seconds
Who's record did he match?
I reckon that he Ndidi handball it.
Boom boom!
I think the title was a one off. Also, Shakespeare was that heavy during the title winning season, so he's probably been eating pies for many a year.
Alan Shearer?
BOOM BOOM, Bob.
Leicester are whipping in some dangerous crosses
I think Teddy Sheringham.
Mahrez wins a corner off of Kolasinac.
Nacho heads away a tasty corner.
Cheers, mate. You're the punster in chief but sometimes I can get one off.
A pair of minutes of stoppage time.
Don't know the answer yet. It was asked on the BBC
You did very well Ndidi, mate!
Into stoppage time then.
Can we find the answer in Lacazette or one of Shakespeare's plays?
Nice one, mate!
GOAL
DESMOND!!
Leicester blew it there
GOAL !!!! DESOMND AT THE EM WITH THE LAST KICK OF THE HALF THAT WAS VERY WELLIE DONE.
Last kick of the half!!
It's Desomnd at the half.
Leicester should have cleared that well before
GOAL! My first goalscorer levels it for the Gunners!!!!
The half ended on a Very Wellie note for the Gunners. It was stated in Lacazette that the Gunners took the lead 94 seconds into the match, but Shakespeare plotted a comeback in the second act of a Midsummer's Night Dream as the Foxes came from behind to take the lead, but Wellie tied it up on the stroke of halftime. What a first half!
Whew - the half-time whistle goes. That was one heck of an advert for the Premiership. Desmond at the Em and nicely poised for the second half. I would still tip this one Arsenal's way as they've created more chances, while Leicester rely on hitting on the break.
The Gunner's equalizer resulted on a tackle by Nacho on Mahrez in midfield. The ball broke to Ozil. who passed to Lacazette and he let it run as both Kolasinac and Wellie beat the offside trap. Kolisinac unselfishly squared it to Wellie , who scored with an easy tap in .
Great half
Just wish you were here Bob watching it with me, Matt, Wyatt and Paul
Of course you too David
Doesn't look like we will have the choices of games in the 400s
Agreed. I would love to have been up there. If not for helping Melanie move then I may have done so.
Answer to trivia question
Arsenal's Kevin Campbell against Man City in 1994-95 and Newcastle's Faustino Asprilla against Sheff Wed in 1997-98 are the other two players to race out of the blocks.
If I understand, Extra time has been replaced by Match Pass , which costs extra so I pass! Is that correct
The second half is underway
Second half underway
We're away again in the second half at the Em.
Great trivia question. I remember both players well, who were great in different ways. I never would have guessed those.
If that second half is half as entertaining as the first then we're in for quite a treat.
Early long throw from Leicester comes to nowt.
I would ban the long throw from football - it's really boring.
If the Gunners continue to cheaply cough up possession then the Foxes may end up with an unexpected victory at the EM.
Really? Goals have been scored that way and as a player I used it regularly.
The Beaker drags a long range effort wide
It's just a random lob into the area.
WOW.. what an atrocious cross by Mahrez
Mahrez will not impress any suitors with that cross. Shakespeare would call that a tragedy.
Arsenal keep try to build their way out of the back... they keep losing it
The cross was worse than the pun!
Mahrez balloons a cross toward the corner flag for no apparent reason.
Vardy should have shot first time... Cech was way out
The second half has got off to a considerably more sedate start to the first.
Oh - Vardy was nearly in there but Cech swept up well.
Great slide tackle by Cech on Owl Face off a long Foxes clearance. Gunners fans shouted shoot and El Neny responded by nearly gifting the Foxes the lead.
