The Traditional Curtain Raiser... The Charity Shield!
The Football season is finally back. Even though it was an odd number year and no WC or EC to follow...we still had quite a lot of footer to follow during the summer but the real stuff starts this weekend. The Charity Shield(still) gets us going with the League Champs Chelsea take on Cup Winners Arsenal. Can the Arse beat Chelsea at Wembley again?
Of course, Mighty Leeds visit newly promoted Bolton for the nightcap

Hope Bob can work out his WatchESPN link today
Morning, UWS. Thanks for getting us started this morning. I'm here for the duration.
I am aching after shifting wheelbarrows full of stones yesterday and have more to do today BUT for now... I am sitting in Bob's chair ready for today's festivities. I have the Test Match already going on WatchESPN, Fox's pregame starts in five minutes and then to Bolton
I was able to get the ESPN3 link going yesterday for the Norwich v. Fulham match, after some struggling. It was blocking me all Friday afternoon but somehow it allowed me in then. Hoping for the best this morning.
Ominous news for the Gunners. I wouldn't be surprised if both Alexis and Beaker left the club before the beginning of the season, leaving Arsenal with some big holes to fill.
Fox's show is starting now... they will be going to commercial in about 30 secs
Repeat of the Cup Final for the first time since Man Utd Chelsea in 07
Chelsea luckily won the Cup Final
United got revenge in C. S.
Giggs gave United the lead but Malouda tied it up
United won on penalty kicks 3-0
Ferdinand, Carrick and Rooney all scored for United
Pizarro, Lampard and Wright-Phillips all missed
Of course, Untied are holders of the Shield as I type
Rubbish coverage from Fox as usual with the likes of Mario Melchiot in the studio. Hate them.
At least they didn't go to commercial for a while!
They are all on the west coast. They had to get up at 3 o'clock to get to the studio in time... PUT YOUR STUDIO ON THE EAST COAST!
New York City is a decent enough place to have a studio
No surfing on the East Coast, mate. They love the LA lifestyle too much.
United take on Real Madrid on Tuesday
I hope I will be able to watch it. I have Jury duty that day. Such a bummer. I called on Friday and have to show up on Tuesday morning. I hope I can leave early. I also have a job interview on Wednesday for the Siena Soccer Club Asst. Coach position. I already have the position but still have to go thru the process!
The Nocitos are taking over the Saints. Matt is a student, I am in the men's program and Tom in the women's
Good morning Bob and UWS. Here to join you for the double header. Read the comments and agree with both of you that FOX is horrible.
Wishing the Nocitos the best in continuing the great tradition at Sienna.
Lacazette is the bloke I'll be watching the closest today. If he looks to be a decent replacement for replacement for Alexis, maybe Arsenal can do something this season. Arsenal have been missing a 25 goal a season player since RVP left to join you lot.
Morning, MUR - great to have the gang together for a new season.
Teams in the tunnel preparing to come out into the sunshine at Wemberley.
Morning MUR
The the London clubs are out of the tunnel heading on to the pitch, where London rivals, the Spuds will play their home matches this year.
Good old Bob Wilson out on the pitch greeting the players. He looks like a midget next to Mert.
Cheers Bob and Dave.
I was reading about the Gunners new signing when I read La Cazette. Do either of you read that paper?
Bob Wilson and Zola meeting the teams... Zola should be hiding for what he did with Birmingham last season
Oh dear.. the Punmiester is back
Leeds will be on Watch ESPN four times this month!
Today at Bolton
Wednesday vs Port Vale.
The late match at the SOL on the 19th
The late match at Forest on the 26th.
Then the international break
Lacazette seems to be the major signing for the Gunners. I don't really trust Arsene to know a good striker when he sees them. I reckon that Morata is the more reliable striker signing this summer. He'll rack up the goals for the Blues for sure.
Here is GSTQ... do they really need a singer? 93,000 fans is good enough
Nice of Zola to de-hat
Agreed about Zola . A horrible job at St. Andrews and we're not talking golf. Was Bob Wilson the one wearing the baseball cap?
Sounds good - I hope that the website will work for me like it did yesterday. The stream was really good.
A Moment of silence.
Not at all sure about Zola's baseball cap and suit look.
A minute silence for the G Towers victims. Impeccably honored
93,000 people silent is very loud!!
Bloody hell - that was a long moment of silence.
We are off... is there a chance both teams can lose? Bugger
According to accuweather it's sunny and 68 in London, feeling like 71. Wish we would have that. That's and average January afternoon for us.
Chelski about to kick us off for the new season - wahay!
They're off from Wembley
Do you have a slightly echoey audio for the crowd noise?
Conte is on the sidelines already in his blue tracksuit... looks like he is one of the players
We are off... is there a chance both teams can lose? Bugger
Teams going same direction as the Cup Final
A beautiful day in London. LOL, Dave. How do they feel about technically playing at a dreaded rival's place.
Teams basically feeling each other out early doors.
I have a quiz question for both of you. What record does Forest Green hold now that they have been promoted to the Football League?
Typical modern footie.
Very true.
I saw some of the match yesterday
Spurs didn't open up the top tier.
That won't happen for league games, right?
How did Arsenal not score there?
The cross really didn't hit anyone
A lost art
Oh - Iwobi did well to breeze by Sideshow but then was under confident about using his left peg to cut it back. Shame.
I read about a missed opportunity for the Gunners in La Cazette after great work down the left by Iwobi and the Side Show being clown schooled.
Welbeck with a header chance...couldn't get any power behind hit
Oh - Granit found Welly well in the box but he was always falling backward on the header, so no power.
At the end of the last century and beginning of this one, I couldn't imagine actually on the Gunners' side
I expect the Spuds to be challenging for the title and playing their typical stuff now that the Wmebley jinx has been lifted.
All Arsenal right now
Iwobi wins a courtly corner after a nice one two with El Neny.
No guesses with my quiz question?
Chelsea are more all blue this season
All Arsenal so far - Chelski are still on the coach.
Missed the question
Smallest league ground?
Close , but no. They have the third smallest league ground.
Batman... I mean Pedro... wasn't supposed to be playing, was he?
Azpi is booked for pulling Wellie back on a Gunner's break.
Forest Green have the smallest ground in the football league?
UWS beat me to the guess.
Forest Green are the only current side in the Football League who've never been in it before?
First yellow card of the day goes to Bellerin for that studs up challenge on Alonso.
A Spanish clash and Bellerin booked for a nasty foul on Marcos Alonso
only undefeated team in the league history
That is true, Bob. but not the answer in mind. A hint is that the record is the smallest at something.
Correct, UWS, but the hint is what I'm looking for. That may help.
They have the shortest manager in the football league?
This playing around at the back to keep possession in moronic!
I don't get it! Why put yourself under unwarranted pressure
Defenders are normally not as skillful as attackers. If they lose the ball or pass it badly...it's a goal!
WHEN IN DOUBT... KICK IT OUT
Huh? Did I get it right?
LOL, mate. You will be interested to read that their manager, Mark Cooper is the son of LUFC legend , Terry.
Nice ball through from Cesc to Wiliian. Run out for a corner.
Sorry, UWS. Nobody has mentioned the correct answer yet.
Terry was a legend - tis true.
Forest Green pay the smallest wage packets in the league?
Not sure, mate, but not the answer.
The new #9 hits the post!!
Decent effort
Oh - Great stuff from Lacazette throughout that move, turning and spraying some excellent balls before curling a shot onto the post.
OH!!!!! The Gunners had a shot come off the post. I missed it , but read about it in La Cazette.
Forest Green are the only team to have a color in their name!!
No. That is not the answer. It's the smallest number of something.
They have the smallest ballboys in the league?
La Cazette is a great read. I just discovered that Marcos Alonso was booked for a foul from behind.
Sorry, but not the answer.
Moses may not have parted the Red Sea, but is tackled for a Chelsea corner that lead to action in the Gunners box until play is stopped. Cahill elbowed Merte in the nose.
Smallest number of groundskeeping staff?
My answer was pathetic
Lots of colors... BLACKpool, Burn
Smallest town to have a team
Merta in the wars!!
This doesn't look good at all for Mert - blood everywhere.
Test Match from Old Trafford showing the other Old Trafford
What's going on with Santi Caz? He appears to be in a suit on the bench. Is he injured?
Old Trafford is very close. They then show the Etihad which is 7 miles away
Well done, UWS. You are absolutely spot on. Forest Green is located in Nailsworth, which has a population of 5,794. To put things in perspective that's about 60 percent of the population of Mildenhall and not much more than Lakenheath Village. It shows what a great accomplishment Forest green achieved.
The new boy at the back Kolasinac is getting an earlier start to this season than he might have predicted.
Great trivia
That's it for Merte as he's replaced by the Bosnian, Kalisinic.
Amazing! Great trivia question, mate.
Thanks, UWS. Smallest to have a Football League team. Accrington Stanley and the Real Dons , who play at Kignstonian's Kings Meadow have actually have smaller capacities
Thanks, Bob. Though you two would enjoy it. Great for pubs?
Cech beats away a shot from Pedro.
Strange that Mildenhall Town will not be able to break that record.
Monreal is now the central player of a very shaky looking back three for the Arsenal. I'd be having Morata on quickly, if I were Conte.
Another yellow for Chelsea dive at Wembley
Willian booked for trying to win a penalty. Did he dive or trip?
Willian falls over in the box looking for a pen. Booked for simulation. Good job, ref - terrible dive.
Moses was booked for break one of the ten commandments of footie.
It was my brother Mike's birthday yesterday. The family was whatsapping each other and Mike mentioned that he was keeping it secret from everyone that he a round
Later in the day, He texted and said during their show in Scarborough, Clark announced it to the audience and 5000 people sang Happy Birthday....he was embarrassed.
Debs found this video this morning
https://www.facebook.com/OfficialJohnnyHatesJazz/videos/1753144038038586/
A bit of showmanship from Sideshow Bob.
Nice one, mate - I'll watch that vid later.
Happy Birthday, Mike. I will make sure to check out the video. Thanks, UWS.
My apologies if Fred got out of hand with the trash talking last night. He's really up for that match to the point that he was being a tad naughty yesterday evening.
Iwobi straight at Courtois after a nice one two with the Ox. Crowded out at the end.
Half time coming up
I am off for walkies at the whistle
Shad is being very patient
Three minutes of stoppage time.
I will need to do the same with Sparky.
Great control there and then fails to cross it...twice
The Gunners win a late corner.
That's it for the half
I'll be back
It's 0-0 at the half that looked like a pre-season match.
Same here.
Players coming back out for the second half.
GOAL !!!! JUST AS I WALK IN THE HOUSE MOSES GIVES CHELSEA THE LEAD. A CORNER WAS HEADED OUT THEN HEADED BACK IN BY CAHILL AND MOSES SMASHED THE BALL PAST CECH
I guess that was perfect timing.
Poor time for Arsenal to give that goal up. But plenty of time for them to get it back.
Oh - that was another dicey moment for the Arsenal at the back.
Chelsea win another corner. Taken short and a Fab cross is missed by Cech, but headed away then Bats shoots straight to Cech.
The Gooner will not be pleased.
Bellerin has a cross headed away then the shot is walked in like an Egyptian, but halfway to Hertfordshire.
Not pleased at all - I was on the phone with him when Moses scored. He's watching with Dad.
Conte not pleased as the tracksuit is getting unzipped.Arsene knows all about zippers or does he?
The good thing is that it's just a friendly , but I'm expecting the same old Arsenal this season or at least that's my prediction.
Chelsea starting to play a bit.
Bellerin wins a corner off of compatriot, Marcos Alonso.
Martin Tyler says not too hot compared with the Far East. Quite right as 72 and sunny is comfortable compared to South Texas this time of the year
Another bad clash of heads now - Sideshow and Cahill both down for the count.
The heart of the Chelsea defense is down, which is Cahill and Sideshow Bob. Just as long as it's not our Bob, who is as rugged as they come
Courtois pushes over a miss hit cross that was zoomed in like an Egyptian
Cheers, mate.
I am back
I missed the goal but I was listening to commentary on 5Live
During the half time talk, a couple of them thought it was a penalty for Willlian... they said there was contact.. SO WHAT!
Perhaps it was meant as a shot.
Welcome back, UWS. My answer to that statement is that I've seen those given
Welbeck fails to get a shot off!
Are defenders just better at blocking or is the attacker being naff
Unusual keeping by Cech who came a far way out of his box to clear even though the Nacho was in better position to clear.
Probably some of both.
Kate's favorite Olivier Giroud is about to make his Wembley appearance.
Giroud and Walcott about to come on
I would think The Gazette and Welbeck to come off
Lacazette making way. He had a few flashes but no goals.
What is the point of Theo Walcott at this point?
It is the Gazette but Iwobi off and Wellie still on
I just read about a French swap in La Cazette. Ollie on in his place. Also Theo for Iwobi. Like for like in both cases.
Walcott and the Ox have both been disappointing
Arsene may be advertising Theo so he can be put in the shop window.
Chelski are the most maddening team. They're playing without a recognizable #9 and yet they're still winning. Grrr....
I hope they have a post championship season like the did the last one
Rash by Kalasinic on Pedro.
Arsene should have shopped him years ago when Theo might have brought in some dosh. Who would want him now?
The free kick comes to nowt after a little dink in from Sideshow.
A training ground routine doesn't work as a chipped free kick by Side Show is headed out then Marcos Alonso volleys tamely to Cech
He could go to a team like the Hammers , Saints , or Baggies. They are at his level. Would you take him at ER?
Chelsea will have a tougher time this season since they also have CL matches to play.
On my walk, they went to Bolton to preview the late match
They said they hope Leeds can hold on to Wood and Leeds are starting their SEVENTH consecutive season with a new manager!!!
Rash by the Sideshow on Ollie and thought he was going to get booked since he pointed for his first infraction at Bobby Madley
Kolasinic needs to calm down a bit.
Here comes the player United didn't buy
Here comes the new boy - Alvaro Morata. They'll be looking to him to rattle in the goals this season.
YIKES!!!! They need more stability at ER. Hopefully they will with the new ownership. Wishing LUFC a successful start to the season with a win at the Macron Stadium.
Let's hope he pulls a hammy
He's on for Bats , who really didn't do anything in this match.
LOL, UWS! Not nice.
Nice effort and save there
Courtois superbly turns around a long range effort that was headed for the upper 90 . It must have felt like granite.
Antonio Rudiger, another big money Chelsea signing, gets ready to come on.
Just read headlines that Chelsea could be trying to get Bale... I hope not
The Gunners listed as the home team at the Spuds home ground.I never would have expected that in the past.
Rudiger, the German defender, coming on to replace Alonso now.
Rudiger on for Marcos Alonso
Is that Fox listing it that way?
I always think the League winner should be the home team
Batman gets a yellow for that rash one on El Neny.
Is it just alphabetically?
I read that about Bale too. He was supposed to go to United. Hoping that's not another signing lost by United to Chelsea.
RED CARD!!!!
Didn't see that coming!
Pedro hurts himself...gets up.... gets a RED
Not a great challenge at all
I don't think this counts towards the league
Batman a super villain as h's sent off for a really nasty foul from behind. It was horrible.
No - it's a red card!!!!
What happened there?! Chelski down to ten.
And Arsenal tie it up immediately
GOAL !!! THEN KALSINIC HEADS IN THE FREE KICK AGAINST THE TEN MEN.
GOAL! It's all gone wrong for Chelski all of a sudden.
New boy Kolasinic rises to nod home the equalizer!
Love seeing the stuffing knocked out of Chelsea!
When was the last time you saw Arsenal score a goal like that? They've rolled back the years to the George Graham era with that one.
Will Arsenal press on to win this one now.
Correct, UWS. My understanding is that since this is a friendly Pedro will not be suspended. Otherwise, it would have been three matches.
I'll be watching Leeds on my TV thru Apple TV
Agreed. They rarely score a goal like that
It used to count
Well done, UWS. I'll be watching on the computer.
The Ox tries to find Giroud with a long ball - too long.
