Afternoon, chaps! Really simple: England win, they go to the World Cup. As such, they’re already making plans for their stay in Russia. It’s a sign of the times, however, that no one’s getting too giddy about their chances next summer. There’s no triumphalism, no patriotic tub-thumping, no wild predictions. Everyone remembers Iceland.
The team news out of Wemberley this afternoon:

Not happy that Southgate is going with two defensive middies - DIer and Hendo - at home against Slovenia. Far too negative, IMHO. Kane will be up front alone with Sterling and Rashford on either flank. And goodness knows what The Ox will be doing. No traditional #10 playmaker at all.
Apparently the Slovenia side only arrived at Wembley at 6:50pm GMT, less than an hour before kick-off. What on earth are they playing at?
Crikey! Syria held the Aussies to a 1-1 in their playoff match. That's the one that might produce the US opponent in a November playoff if the US crap the bed this week.
Jacob Steinberg is commenting that Dele Alli is the big loss tonight, due to his suspension for that middle finger salute. I'm not sure - Dele has been in rotten form for Spurs lately. Maybe this will give him some time to get his head straight. Sterling takes his place.

Sterling is doing my head in. He's running into their players rather than finding a pass, fannying about with flicks and back-heels that only Neymar can manage, and putting his hands on a defender at set pieces so that Kane's goal is disallowed.
Also, agree with you about Alli. He's been amusingly horrible this year, and he's still diving, and leaving a coward's boot in the tackle. He's suspended tonight for good reason.
It's also too bad there's no Labrador like Welbeck or Vardy just hounding the s**t out of their defenders hoping to snaffle up a mistake.
Hope for better in the second half.
