Still the Biggest Match of the Season
Liverpool vs Manchester United will always be the biggest match of the season in my book! Thirty-eight championship between them! Not a bad haul!
This will be United's first big match of the season. Can they continue their run? I hope so!
Palace are on NBC for a third match in a row for the visit of Chelsea. Arsenal visit Watford in the late one.
Of course, Mighty Leeds take on Jap's Chaps on ESPN3!
Join me for all the festivities!

Team news from Anfield is that Mata and Rashford start on the bench
The teams
Liverpool:
Mignolet, Gomez, Matip, Lovren, Moreno, Wijnaldum, Henderson, Can, Salah, Firmino, Coutinho.
Manchester United:
De Gea, Valencia, Smalling, Jones, Darmian, Ander Herrera, Matic, Young, Mkhitaryan, Martial, Lukaku.
Morning, UWS - I'm up at the crack of dawn to watch the biggie. It's been too long since we had a Premiership weekend. Can't wait!
Will Jose park the bus at Anfield? Will knock off Liverpool on the break?
Will United get their FIFTH 4 niller of the season!
Morning Bob
Mike whatsapped us
I'll have to have a look - I never look at WhatsApp.
There have been some pundits who have put a caveat on United's great start by stating that they haven't played any big sides yet. Today will change that for sure. This is a big test.
Good morning, Bob and Dave. Up early to watch the big match. It's still dark outside.
I just hard the two Robbies state that. This is a definite test.
Morning, MUR - it's very early doors where you are.
Rebecca says they don't come much bigger and UWS says this is the biggest match of the season. Is it bigger or biggest?
Good morning. It sure , but this is around the time I get up for school. A strong pot of coffee is brewing.
The Fake Scot and the Wee Neviller on the mics.
It's still the biggest in terms of history and tradition. These sides know what it's all about.
The Mad Hatter resigned yesterday. Good Riddance. Now time for Gulati to go.
Morning MUR
NBC has Derek Rae on the mic
Where's Arlo?
There is only one 10 o'clocker on too!
Their coverage is less expansive this season
They say Martial up with Lukaku... that won't happen!
No - I assume it will be The Chunk up front alone and Martial wide.
Good morning, UWS. A great way to end the international break.
I'm thinking that or behind the Chunk, but further up than the midfield players.
I hope United can do well today. I am a little worried about our back four!
King Kenny had a stand named after him yesterday with SAF there as a guest. Why didn't they open the stand in front of the entire crowd today? United did that for Sir Alex and Sir Bobby
Who's a bigger club?
Old Trafford
Sir Matt, Sir Alex, Sir Bobby
Anfield
Mr Bill, Mr. Bob, Mr. Kenny
Back at Anfield for "You'll Never Walk Alone."
I was listening to a Pink Floyd record the other day and there was a track on it that was Anfield singing their anthem in the early 70s. Sounded exactly the same.
Teams walking out of the tunnel as the fans sing the famous Pool song.
Teams are coming out of the tunnel
I thought United would be wearing their black shirts but they are in their 'silver' kits
Bigger club? United - no question.
Derek Rae said it's been sung since 1963. I thought it would have originated earlier than that
United attacking the Kop in the first half
18 to 7 changed to 18-20....... I LOVE THAT STAT!
Absolutely. United is the biggest club.
I second that, UWS.
Anfield looking and sounding marvelous as we're set for kickoff.
We are off
COME ON MAN U
COME ON MAN U
COME ON MAN U
They're off from Anfield!
COME ON UNITED!
Well, the version that they sing, by Gerry and the Pacemakers, is from 1963. They were a British invasion band from a similar era to the Beatles.
dEREK rAE SAID pOOL STARTING WAERINGRED WHEN sHANKS TOOK OVER. i THOUGHT THEY ALWAYS WORE RED.
First corner for United then.
Herrera gets hammered in the back by his teammate Smalling and then slices his kick...hope it gets better for him!!
I remember them well, but know them more for Ferry Dow the Mersey.
Both corners from Miki hit the first man on the near post (sigh)....
United have back to back corners... the first one doesn't beat the first man...sigh...the second wasn't that good either
I think Liverpool didn't wear ALL red. I think they had white shorts
Cagey, teasing start to this match.
Just looked it up
I was right, they wore white shorts Pre-Shanks
Great anoraking, UWS. Thanks for the clarification. I guess Shanks changed that.
Young has been quite good in some his performances this season but they have been as wingback..he crosses well
Wonder why he is playing ahead of Rashford
Of course, it is good to have Rash and Mata coming off the bench if needed
Decent move from Pool, with Firmino trying to feed it back to Wynaldum.
Miki makes a good run
Cross can't find Lukaku
A similar raking move from United, with Miki just not able to find Lukaku. The pace is starting to pick up.
Don't like this new camera angle at Anfield. It's a mile away from the action.
Revie changed Leeds' colors completely to look like Real Madrid!
Don't know how teams can do that
I am surprised modern day teams don't completely change it up
Too far up... damn new construction!!
It's weird how you get used to the same view at certain stadiums!
Well, so far United have not been blown away unlike Arsenal were
Why not - Cardiff changed from blue to red a couple of years back.
First shot of the match . A long range effort from Matip that nearly lands in a Ferry Down the Mersey.
I think they got backlash for that and changed back
Did Leeds wear all blue prior to Revie becoming manager?
United started the match seven points ahead of Liverpool....LOVE IT!
Let's make it TEN
Wasn't it yellow and blue?
They did. Cardiff wear red for just a few seasons.
http://www.historicalkits.co.uk/English_Football_League/index.html
Interesting changes thru the yeas
Was it stripes. I was thinking blue with yellow trim. Isn't their current second choice colors similar to the old first choice colors
In the 20s Leeds were Sheffield Wednesday wannabes
The Little Neviller doesn't rate Moreno as a left back. Well - he would know.
De Gea comfortably saves a long range effort from Wijnaldum
Who?
Agreed, Bob. I guess it was the raring 20s for that club. It's been pretty much downhill since.
Jones had a chance to clear it long but he went short, then short, then back to keeper who cleared it long!
Leeds in the 20s... Blue and white stripes!!
Looks like a great link, UWS. CH CH CH Changes. IS that what Bowie was thinking when he sang that song?
Come on United
Attack more!!
The Anfield crowd is baying for blood as Salah goes down on the edge of the box - nothing doing from Jon Moss.
Jose letting John Moss have it then Salah appeared to be fouled just outside the box by Jones, but Martin Atkinson waved play on.
United being pinned back but Pool not really creating much
Salah needs to realize that a rolling stone does not gather moss.
As I thought, Martial is not up top
He's wide left... bad control there by the frenchman loses possession
More of the same as United continue to be pinned back.
United escape the ball going across the box twice
My mistake - it's Martin Atkinson in the middle today.
PHEW!!! Salah misses his kick, wide open in the six yard box.
Too deep
Too negative
Well said Phil
I'm goal starved already - come on, lads!
No probs, Bob, but either way, a rolling stone does not gather moss, nor do the Rolling Stones.
An illegal karate chop by Matip just outside the Pool box. Great chance for United.
That's a good point from Derek R
United have not been head to head fighting for championship
There was the 'FACT' title race
United finished second to Pool in the 80s but miles off
Possibly in the 60s
Useless free kick from Young
USELESS free kick
Sigh
Get the ball to Lukaku...ONE TOUCH... got a second now...out wide!
Nice move....useless cross
Lukaku got to a great position but then blasted his cross well over everyone.
The only season I remember that was the 1979-80 season when United and Pool went into the final match of the season level on points. Pool defeat Villa 4-1 and United lost 2-0 at ER. That's one of the few seasons where the two were head to head in a title race.
Don't remember it being that close
Surely Young was fouled off the ball. Why did Martin Atkinson wave play on.
Referee Atkinson seems to be letting everything go at the moment. Of course, there will then be the usual flurry of yellow cards in the early second half.
It was . Both matches were on MOTD. Avi Cohmen scored for both sides vs Villa, becoming the first Israeli to score in the English top flight. United played really poorly at ER that day. I don't think it mattered because POOL had a much better GD.
Just looked it up
Liverpool beat Villa in their penultimate as Unite lost to 2-0 to Leeds
That's probably correct, Bob.
I have to go to the loo... goal to be scored soon then
Sadeo Mane wins the Silliest Haircut of the Week award.
A decent long range effort from Matic that wasn't too far over.
Oh - close call there from Matic - great strike. Just bent wide and high.
Is he playing today. I haven't noticed him.
It must be the trip to the loo. Did he skip, skip , skip to the loo?
Coutinho tries a shot from the D - wins a corner.
Coutinho has a long range effort deflected for a corner.
Oh - great save by Twilight! I thought they would score there.
OH!!!! A superb close range save by De Gea from Matip then Salah shoots the rebound inches wide.
Still no Nocito Curse.
I'm back...didn't miss much
Me too, Bob. It must be the loo curse.
Welcome back, UWS. Pool nearly took the lead.
Lukaku lunges in and gets a bollocking from the ref.
A lecture by Martin Atkinson because a chunk was taken out of Joe Gomez Addams.
No - perhaps your bathroom hoodoo is over?
Just took a look at chance.. great save
What about that save from De Gea, UWS?
If we wanted lecturing then Why not have Ron Atkinson do the officiating?
Salah is called for an illegal karate chop.
Why does Salah get an "M." on his shirt - is there another Salah on the Liverpool roster that I don't know?
United win a free kick... fail to knock the ball in the box... just passes it around....sigh
I thin k the Monday nighter last season at Anfield was played on this same weekend.
Corner... front post crap again!
Salah's first name begins with an M. I think that is the reason./
Yashley with a corner - cleared out easily. Don't they practice corners?
Salah straight at De Gea.
It seems to be a lost art.
I know but Coutinho doesn't have a "P." on his shirt. Firmino doesn't have an "R." on his shirt. What gives? I demand answers!
a tad naughty by Herrera on Firmino.
These modern day players want to be known by their first names. I agree, Bob.
oooh....Lukaku should have scored there!!!!
Oh - Lukaku worked his way through to a big chance there. Great save by Minnie.
Great save by Minnie from the Chunk. The best United attack of the match
Now Loveren is down off a challenge from the Chunk. Did he have a chunk taken out of him?
Lukaku in trouble again now. Lovren stayed down after a clash. Did he stamp on him? Didn't look like it.
A minute of stoppage time.
One added minute
A typical modern day first half of a match everyone was looking forward to
That is the half time whistle
PLAY BETTER
It's 0-0 at the half where moist of the attacking was done by the home team.
Half-time whistle comes in an absorbing match. The goalkeepers came up big in the two main chances. Well poised for the second half.
Oh, NBC proper is showing the second 3 o'clocker
At Wembley
Teams out for the second
Please play better United!
We are off
I can't remember Miki doing anything in the first half
The second half kicked off as I got out of a refreshing shower.
WE'RE GOING TO WEMBUHLAY!
Liverpool threaten because of STUPID passing around the back
PATHETIC by Jones!
How are you two feeling about this one?
Desperate defending from United that started with Jones gifting possession to Pool then makes up for it with a great close range block off a shot from Salah. The offside flag was raised , but Salah looked on.
I am pleased that Liverpool haven't had one of their good days but I am not happy how United are playing
Firmino has a long range effort take a wicked deflection into the side netting.
I'm not pleased because United are far too timid and allowing Pool to dictate play.
Liverpool's corner really makes the point of not beating the first man!
They United give a stupid free kick
Even if United get a smash and grab, I won't be happy
I thought this side had more to it
I wonder if any of the foreign lads from United think "who is this old bald geezer coming into the dressing room telling us what to do?"
The Neviller called this fixture a pub match. Is it being played at the Dog and Pony where there is a show?
Wide open in the middle....thankfully offside but De Gea saved it anyway
COME ON MAN U
COME ON MAN U
COME ON MAN U
Nice through ball from Coutinho to Firmino, who is offside.
What bald geezer is that?
Dummy Darmian with a stupid foul throw.
NO THEY AREN'T!!
Watched a great documentary on Sir Bobby last Sunday on BBC1... you should try and get a look
United hanging on. Like last season when they came to play for a draw.
I am starting to get annoyed
Sorry - Phil Neville was telling a story about Bobby Charlton coming into the dressing room before big matches to gee up the players. I wouldn't imagine that a foreign player like Anthony Martial knows anything about Bobby Charlton.
Terrible by Smalling and Herrera!!
I was out of town. That's a much watch for sure. He's a legend.
Everyone knows Sir Bobby
PHEW! Emre Can Not score as his close range volley is over off a great cross from Joe Gomez Addams.
Pool get a chance all coming from the mix up from United
COME ON...PLAY BETTER
Bring on Rashford
LIngard???
It would be like our getting a visit from Garrincha in the dressing room. We'd be like, "Who's he?"
Lingard would be at most the third off the bench
Rash and Mata before him
Or us going into the Lakenheath High School dressing room
Martial cross fails to find anyone
United finally attacking
Did we have a home dressing room? Did we come to the game dressed?
I can't remember
Yeah - exactly. Someone would have to tap them on the shoulder and whisper, "these old guys won the championship back in 1982...."
LOL!!!! We should pay a visit. UWS should say I once scored four goals in a high school football game.
YES WE DID!!
Four goals to win the league!!
Yeah - the dressing room on the right once you entered the complex was the "home" dressing room. The one on the left was "away." We always wore the shirts to school on home game days. And it was always jacket and tie for away matches. I remember my mom taking me out to Top Shop in Bury to get this natty brown corduroy number in my freshman year.
I was using a famous Al Bundy line, but you are spot on as you were that day.
And I let seven in in the last two matches! (smh)...
LIngard on for Miki....not a change I would make
Of course Miki has done nowt
I remember that as if it was yesterday.
Rash is next .
I think it was eight!
Didn't we lose the last match 4-1
You did get an assist for one of my last two goals to win it. Stef got the other
Pool win a corner.
It was cleared away
I remember us wearing a tie for road trips
I thought I remembered a 5-4 win followed by a 3-1 defeat
Don't remember using locker room
Did we walk out as a team
Martial off for Rashford
Why not play both
We always looked like a million bucks coming off the bus.
Rash is karate chopped on to the pitch.
We sure did. We were Men in Blazers!
Maybe it was 3-1 but I do remember it was the day after prom
We had the championship wrapped up...we were on the beach!
A long range effort from Salah is over.
Sure - we all went clickety clack down those stairs that went down to the stadium. I was always disappointed that more people didn't come out for our games. It was always just a few parents and some girlfriends of players hanging around. The whole community came out for the football games, with food stalls and everything.
Big match that season was at Upper Heyford
We were losing 1-0 at half and that would have meant the league wasn't in our hands
We scored two or there in the second to win..one of my goals I celebrated Frank Lampard Sr style...running around the corner flag!
There's a beach at High Wycombe, Bucks? I remember a sloping pitch like Wycombe Wanderers had back then
The Nev says Liverpool dominating... not creating much tho
I agree. The attendance was poor. Very disappointing.
