A Busy Footie Sunday
A very happy Sunday morning to all of you LOBers. We've got an especially busy Sunday morning ahead of us here. It all starts at the Emirates with a London Derby that is now colored by the reality that Arsene Wenger will be leaving the Arsenal at the end of the season. That hopefully won't overshadow the other FA Cup semi-final match, also in London, between Chelsea and Soton at Stamford Bridge. We finish up, then at the Etihad with newly-minted champions Citeh against Swansea. Join me for all the fun today, won't you?

Good morning, Bob. Great to join you for what should be an action packed Sunday
They're off from the EM on a sunny Sunday afternoon.
We're underway at the Em, with Arsenal wearing their home strip and West Ham in all black. Peter Dreary and the Little Neville on the mics.
One of the last times we will see Wenger and his famous sweater on the bench
Morning, MUR - I didn't see you come in. How are you, mate? Good weekend so far?
I'll be odd to see anyone else on the bench for the Arse.
The Little Neville is part of the class of '92 ownership at Salford City and will be delighted at winning promotion yesterday
I see empty seats. That’s amazing. Why would you willingly miss this game?
Morning Boys
My golf game has been delayed until the afternoon so I will be around this morning
I wil be turning this over for the Semi
It's been a fairly good weekend . Thanks for asking. Has it been a busy weekend for you and Kate?
Huge day in London. Getting around might be difficult
This match, the semi and the London marathon
Good morning, UWS. Great to have you on board. I think only the last twenty minutes of this match overlap.
Playing golf in the snow? I think you told us yesterday that there was snow. Did it melt?
Morning, UWS. Golf game? Isn't it a bit too parky for that in Eastern New York?
Lee Mason getting his equipment fixed by Scotty. Gooner must be having a laugh
Xakha Khan has a corner headed away by Pat Rice
Alan Pardew and Mick McCArthy are unemployed. Any chance of them coming to the EM.
Oh - Koz goes close from the corner. Great climb for the header.
Nacho wins a corner then a decent corner didn't go in because the header from it was just wide.
Nice football there from West Ham, nearly playing Joao Mario in. They've clearly come to spoil the retirement party.
A rare Hammers attack and Ospina easily saves from Joao Mario.
Joao Mario again, bursts through the Arsenal defense but then rifles at Ospina. West Ham have had the better of the opening proceedings.
The Potters take the lead vs Burnley. That would bring them within two points of Swansea. Good news for the Gunners as well.
Great football from Arnautovic . Wins a tackle then forces a great save from Ospina
End to end stuff right now
As for golf, I told you guys yesterday... you both seem surprised!!!
It is bright and sunny today. Still a bit chilly but should be fun
The Hammers nearly take the lead as t hey have a corner and a header from The Coyote skims the top of the bar.
It was Matt's idea
What do I do....say no to my own son!!
We were going to play in the morning but no tee times available
You're made of strong stuff, UWS - enjoy it!
Stoke ahead of Burnley
I'm surprised because I thought it would be a bit chilly, but fair play to you if it works. Hope you shoot some birdies and eagles. Is that the correct vocabulary?
Claudio Ranieri in the stands - would he be an appropriate replacement for Wenger?
Lovely flowing football from both team now. It's a pleasure watching this match.
It's sunny and in the low 70s in London while in Leeds in the mid 50s , raining and 35 MPH winds. London sounds like good golfing weather. Leeds not so much
Rangers takes the lad vs the Queen of Hearts. Glasgow vs Edinburgh this weekend.
OH!!! A decent long range effort Wellie done , but just wide for the Gunners
The Stoke goal was scored by Badou Ndiaye and assisted by Diouf as the two Senegalese international teammates combined.,
Rangers two up vs the Queen of Hearts
Stoke now two points from safety behind the Swans . Those two meet on the final day of the season. Surely the most important match of the day
This long range effort not Wellie Done at all . Dragged wellie wide.
The Little Neviller says that this Arsenal team is "a soft touch." That's the stereotype but I don't think it's the reality. In years past, Arsenal were great going forward but gave up too many goals at the back, much like Liverpool this season. But that's not the case with this side. They're just mediocre through the team. They don't score nearly enough goals to be able to challenge the top four.
Oh - good hit by Xhaka Khan from the free kick but it was punched out by the keeper.
Back from the bog to discover that I did NOT miss a goal. Didn't even red about one in Lacazette.
A cross from Iwobi is headed Wellie high and Wellie wide. The replay showed a powerful free kick from, Xakha Khan was straight to Hart and fisted away
Free kick chance for the Gunners.. decent effort saved
Sorry I've not been commenting a lot at the mo
Having family discussions with England.
Johnny Hates Jazz have a concert at the O2 on Friday. Mike asked about the show
They are thinking of playing the Album Turn Back the Clock in its entirety. Other songs after
That would mean opening up with Shattered Dreams
We all liked the idea of doing the album as if you put the needle on the vinyl. Also, to end the show with Shattered Dreams too
I agree with your description as Gooner and Simon will. They will be hoping that the new manager will improve the quality of the side.
WOW !!! That's fantastic . Sounds like a fantastic concert.
Stoke still leading Burnley . Gooners will be rooting for Stoke because the Gunners will increase the gap vs Burnley if the scores hold.
Xakha Khan booked for afoul on Art Masouaku. El Neny down injured.
A David O'Leary spotting in the stands.
I would love to be at the show - sounds fabulous!
Elneny is being stretchered off now - looks like Maitland-Niles is being prepared to come on for him.
I'm off to the shower ahead of the FA Cup Semi - back in a tick.
El Neny stretchered off . There is not a natural replacement on the bench, so Ashley Maitland Niles is on and there should be a reshuffle with Mustafi presumably playing that midfield position.
Wish I was going too... all the family will be there
Into two minutes of a quintet of stoppage time minutes
The Hammers win a corner.
Half time at Stoke
1-0
A poor corner actually leads to another.
A great score for the Gunners, but not the Swans.
Perfect day for golfing in London.
Nice Gunners build up and a shot from Ramsey comes off the stanchion.
HT at Em
It's 0-0 at the half as both teams huffed and puffed in an effort to score, but just couldn't
I really thought Arsenal would get a boost from the Arsene move
Rangers have defeated the Queen of Hearts 2-1 , which is more in the fight to finish second than anything else.
Second half underway from the Brit where Stoke looking to keep their survival hopes alive.
A draw would put the Hammers on 37 points and surely safe.
Away we go for the second half
Second half underway from the EM
Stoke are making it interesting
The London marathon was run today in what has been Summer like weather by U.K. standards,
A Hammers corner from Joao is basically a pass to the Gunners , which leads to a Gunners counter and Zaba booked for a foul on that counter on Ramsey as he was clearly beaten for pace. The free kick is headed out for a Gunners corner.
GOAL
The Gunners take the lead
Monreal with a cool finish
Back from the shower just in time to see Nacho plug in Arsenal's opener.
Defending from West Ham to be fair. Nacho was wide open, Masuaku came off the near post he was supposed to be guarding and Joe Hart should have been able to reach that shot.
GOAL !!! A SUPERB VOLLEY FROM THE CORNER FROM XAKHA KHAN IS TO THE TUNE OF A GUNNERS LEAD.
Stoke will only be two points behind Swansea, four behind Huddersfield, West Ham and Palace
it all began with a poor Hammers corner. You can get punished by taking poor corners
So far today, Southampton have dropped a spot in the table... can they improve their day at Wembley
Iwobii has a shot blocked for a Gunners corner.,
This is the second rate semi...will Fox think it's not important enough to get their prime commentators out of the LA beds
I hope so
Why didn't The Gazette shoot it first time!!
The Starting Line Ups from Wembley
Chelsea XI: Caballero, Azpilicueta, Cahill, Rudiger, Moses, Kante, Fabregas, Emerson, Willian, Giroud, Hazard.
Southampton XI: McCarthy, Cedric, Hoedt, Yoshida, Bednarek, Bertrand, Romeu, Højbjerg, Lemina, Austin, Long.
Marcus Alonzo is banned after retrospective action taken against him for his tackle last week agains these very same Saints
Lanzini and Hernandez coming on
No idea why they aren't playing all the time
I know Lanzini is coming back from injury but....
Lanzini on for Fernandes and Chicha on for Joao Mario as Davie Moyes looks for an equalizer.
Burnley have equalized
Ashley Barnes ties it up for Burnley at the Brit, which is a key goal in both the relegation battle and EL race.
That's a huge goal for the bottom of the table clubs.
Stoke four points behind the Swans. Looking a bit bleak for the Potters , who are behind the Saints on GD
Stoke desperately need another goal.
GOAL !!! ARNAUTOVIC TIES IT UP FOR THE HAMMERS WITH A REAL ROCKET OF AN EFFORT
GOAL!!!
Great finish by Arno!!!
He was offside....almost too lazy to get back on...like last week
But he did and what a finish
Just like my finishes
GOAL! Speaking of goals, Marco Arnautovic equalizes. Great strike. No more than the Hammers deserved in truth.
That goal could have easily been prevented . Ospina fisted away a cross that he could have easily caught. Then the Gunners blocked a couple of Hammers shots, then Lanzini past for that rocket of a finish by Arnautovic.
The Hammers win another corner.
Teams in the tunnel under the Arch
All the fans have flags
It looks great..... of course FOX don't let us hear it
Here they come
I just hate FOX
They have no idea how to capture the atmosphere!!
Stop rabbiting on....just get to the stadium!
Key matches in the relegation battle:
May 5th
Stoke vs Palace
Cherries vs Saints
May 8th Swans vs Saints
May 13th Swans vs Stoke
Who will survive? Your thoughts
Stop rabbiting on....just get to the stadium!
Thank God... normal commentators
The other semi is underway from Wemberlay
Who would we prefer to see in the Final?
Matt wants Chelsea in the Final
I want revenge for 76
You?
Early free kick chance for Chelski.
1976 still hurts
I remember the year before watching West Ham Fulham in the Cup Final thinking why can't United be there!! They hadn't been in the Cup Final in my life time!!
They made it the next year... and Southampton went and blew everything!!
revised relegation schedule:
April 28th Saints vs Cherries
May 5th Cherries vs Swans and Stoke vs Palace
May 8th Swans vs Saints
May 13th Swans vs Stoke
Interesting that the last two matches in that schedule Swans are at home. Advanatage Swans?
Great crowd response from the Saints fans.
A repeat of the 83 Final
United beating a south coast team that has been relegated!!
Hazard just over as Chelsea nearly took the lead.
Regarding that please comment from my post at 10:04. Looks like a possibility, but not definite. Relegation that is
I always thought the the Swans had done just enough. It still looks like Saints, Potters and Baggies going down.
Alpha Romeu with a bad pass and Willian has a shot come off the bar on the counter.
Southampton fans have the same end as the United fans from yesterday
Good omen?
Chelsea going the same direction as United did... good omen?
Must win home matches for the Potters today and on May 5th vs Palace. Looks like the swans matches vs Saints and Potters the last few days of the season may decide it. Advantage Swans as they are at home both matches. probably done just enough
A bit boring so far at Wembley, with Saints just dropping deep and asking Chelski to break them down. I might switch back to the Arsenal v. WHU match.
Problem with modern day football
"Chelsea have had the ball for an age".... can't cross the ball and ball deflects out for a Southampton throw in
Had the ball.... never got it in the box
Must win home match for Saints vs Cherries in a South Coast Derby on Saturday
Arsenal retake the lead!
Ramsey with the goal
Missed it.. .happened as I turned it over
GOAL !!!!! RAMSEY GIVES THE GUNNERS A LATE 2-1 LEAD
Just a cross that went straight in....
Hart has to do better
Just said... I SAID AWAY
He better not be anywhere near the Three Lions
Free kick chance for Chelsea... just left of the D... very dangerous position.. No Alonso to shoot....it's Willian....up he comes...up and over the wall and crossbar
It all started with a tackle won in the Gunners half and culminated in a cross that was headed out. Ramsey put in what was meant to be a cross , but Lacazette put off Joe Hart and the cross ended up in the back of the net.
THE GAZETTE scores Arsenal's third
Again...he took an extra touch!!
GOAL !!! 3-1 GUNNERS
Stephen Ireland smacks the outside of the post for Stoke
I missed the goal , but while reading Lacazette read that Joe Hart was too easily beaten at his near post of passes from Wellie and Aubama
4 added at the 365
That's typical of a team's luck at the bottom.
GOAL !!!! YOU CAN READ ABOUT IN LACAZETTE AS THE GUNNERS NOW LEAD 4-1.
Going to have to take the dog on a walk near the end of the first half and half time
Getting very impatient is Shadow
Missed that one
I was at Wembley
Boy, I take a few moments to return an email from a student and all hell breaks loose at the Emirates.
A quartet of stoppage time minutes at the EM
Bloody students
Oh - nearly a fifth goal there. Xhaka Khan should have buried it.
The Hammers on 35 points . Not definitely safe. It may come down to their final match of the season at home to Moyes's former Toffees.
I know, I know.
Burnley want the win to keep close to Arsenal
They could qualify for Europe today anyway
If Chelsea win today, Burnley will be playing in Europe next season
The goal was far too easy . Aubama passed to Ramsey and he was given lots of room for Lacazette to pick his spot.
Full time at the 365
Burnley 4 points behind Arsenal
9 ahead of Leicester who have 12 points to play for
Stoke stay in 19th 4 points from safety with 9 points at stake
It's over at the EM as the Gunners thrash the Hammers 4-1 thanks to three late goals.
All of at the Em
Now full attention to the other part of North London
This will be a somewhat satisfying win for the Gunners, and yet it doesn't take away from the main problems that they have. They've always been a fair weather bully, beating up on the likes of West Ham.
The real test will be on Thursday - can they knock off a dangerous opponent like Atletico?
Not happy with the PL that they play games at the same time
Back over to Wembley.
Show respect
I agree, UWS - they should schedule the FA Cup semis one after the other on one day - maybe the Sunday - at neutral grounds and then play all of the Prem matches on the Saturday.
I listed the key relegation matches at 10:04. That should save everyone from searching. As I stated earlier, probably advantage Swans even thought he Hammers are not quite safe yet.
When we lived in England I thought the semis were played at the same time as the League matches. Is that correct?
The Arsenal visit Old Trafford next Sunday
It will be in between the two semis....will they rest a lot of players
Yes they were but nothing was on TV
Fans didn't miss the Semi because they were at another match... they couldn't watch it anyway
Off to the loo... goal coming?
Two key matches in a fortnight from today in terms of the EL/CL battle:
Gunners vs Burnley and Chelsea vs Liverpool both played at the same time.
Your thoughts?
Good point, UWS. I had forgot about that,
This first half seems fairy uneventful since Chelsea's early chances.
Emerson wins a Chelsea corner.
A decent corner eludes everyone, especially Azpi at the near post , and out for a goal kick
I am off for walkies
I have Talksport on my phone and the commentary has not been blocked
I'll be back
Cheers !!! Enjoy the walkies and stay warm.
Yoshida booked for a foul while Martin Atkinson had played the advantage.
Cheerio, UWS!
This match has been a snoozefest. The Saints have choked the life out of the match. Very different from yesterday's semi, where both sides went after each other.
Willy Cabs could have gone for a cab ride because this has been such a horrible first half.
Sixth and seventh both may qualify for the EL. So what's the difference? Sixth automatically qualifies for the group stages and seventh starts in July with playoff rounds.
The ref mercifully blows for half-time. I'm off to whip out the smelling salts.
No stoppage time as it's 0-0 at the end of a horrible first half.
Sorry to abandon you, mate. I'm off to spend time with the in-laws this afternoon.
Back from taking out the trash as this rubbish match is abut to resume.
The Second half is underway
GOAL !!!OLLY GIVES CHELSEA THE LEAD LESS THAN THIRTY SECONDS AFTER THE SECOND HALF KICKOFF
Olly scored 26 seconds after the kickoff.A Saints player had not even touched the ball. Several short passes then A Fab long ball was trapped by Hazard and nice pass to Olly resulted in him tricking two Saints defenders, rounding McCarthy then scoring off some great footwork.
Hazard shoots just wide on a counter then the Saints win a corner seconds later.Alpha Romeu is called for a fender bender as he slightly nudges Cahill.
I am back for the second half
The Blues take the lead as I am walking up my driveway
The radio is talking about how few Saints fans there are
Empty seats below and a lot on upper tier
Long with a chance...too much of a touch past Carbo
Southampton doing a United... wait til they are behind before they start to play
Saints should have tied it up Charlie Austin got a long diagonal pass and found Shane Long with a superb pass. He rounded Willy Cabs a, but his poor touch ran the ball out of play.
Are defenders just better these days or attackers just worse.... they can't cross the ball without it being blocked!
Alpha Romeu accused of reckless driving? Already booked and with a nasty challenge on Olly.
Giroud is down hurt and stays down... it was a good tackle but his ankle is trapped under the leg
Welcome back, Dave. It's been an improved second half.
To answer your question it's some of both. Defenders are better at knowing how to stop attackers, who there more as an extra passer of the ball rather than crossing. That's my understanding.
Looks like my wish of 76 Revenge is not on the cards.... 07 Revenge then
Some Sparky FA Cup facts involving Chelsea :
Played against Chelsea in the 94 Final and for them in the 97 Final. Won both matches.
Managed against Chelsea in the 2007 semi on a Sunday and lost. A repeat today?
Cometh the hour cometh the changes. Looks like two from Sparky.
If that happens I want a repeat of the 07 Final. That is for Jose to be the winning manager in a Man United vs Chelsea FA Cup Final.
Southampton bringing on two subs
Tadic and Redmond
Willian coming off...stupid move
Hope things comes back to bite Conte
He looks pissed
Looks like he went straight down the tunnel
Here come the changes. Shane Long , a striker who hasn't scored iin ages replaced by Nathan Redmond and Tadic in for Hoijberg in an attacking switch. Chelsea Conte with a change as Willian takes forever to come off the pitch an is replaced by Bakayoko. That musty be to counter that last Saints switch
Fouling can be real Hazard as a Saints player is booked for laying a real Hoedt on the Chelsea player.
Maybe Willian is going to be at Old Trafford next season
I think the Chelsea move was tactical: A defensive switch. Far too early for that considering Chelsea are more than able to handle the Saints.
Another useless cross...it's the attackers... not defenders!!
Just stuns me
Lemina wins a corner off of Rudiger.
Teams attacking their fans in the second half unlike yesterday
The corner is headed out for another.
