Football after Wenger
I'm still reeling from the news yesterday that Arsene Wenger will leave Arsenal at the end of the season. Of course, some Arsenal fans had demanded it for years, but I still didn't see it coming. Today's matches somehow fade into the background with news of one of the longest serving and successful Premiership managers retiring. But we do have some football on today, starting with Liverpool's trip to the Hawthorns. That's followed up with the usual 10am EST kickoffs, including Watford v. Palace on NBC Sports. Finally, it's Cup Semi Final time on Fox at 12:15. United v. Spurs - it doesn't get any better. Brew yourself a strong cuppa and join me, won't you?
357 Comments:
Tributes to Wenger continue to pour in this morning on NBC Sports - he's a legend.
The teams now gathering in the tunnel at the Hawthorns:
West Brom (4-4-2) Foster; Nyom, Dawson, Hegazi, Gibbs; Phillips, Livermore, Brunt, McClean; Rondon, Rodriguez.
Substitutes: Myhill, Evans, Yacob, Burke, Krychowiak, Field, Robson-Kanu.
Liverpool (4-3-3) Karius; Gomez, Van Dijk, Klavan, Moreno; Wijnaldum, Henderson, Milner; Salah, Ings, Mane.
Substitutes: Mignolet, Lovren, Firmino, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Robertson, Solanke, Alexander-Arnold.
Referee Stuart Attwell.
Good morning, Bob.Here to join you the day after the surprise announcement. Wenger with four matches remaining starting tomorrow vs Moyes his possible successor and a week from tomorrow at OT vs Little Joe, who will either wish him farewell or tell him good riddance.
This of course is a must-win for the Baggies. They'll be relegated tomorrow if they lose today and results go against them tomorrow (that is, if either Stoke or Soton get a point). Its' going to be a tall ask in the form that Liverpool are in.
They're off from the Hawthorns.
Good Morning
He has been a fantastic manager for Arsenal for so many years
I was never in the Arsene Out camp because he always had the team there or there about. His teams attacked and played some great football. The modern day atmosphere is win at all cost. Only ONE team can win the title! I am surprised 19 managers don't get the sack!!
Winning the title doesn't matter anyway. Mancini and Pelligrini won titles with City and they were gone soon after. Jose won the title with Chelsea. Within a year... sacked. Claudio won the league with Leicester.....he should have been manager for life...gone within the year!! Conte at Chelsea... out after a year!!
No sense at all!!
Now everyone is going gaga about Wenger... you wanted him out!!
Morning boys
Morning, MUR - great to have you on board this morning. Dunno about Moyes. The Guardian are listing Massimiliano Allegri, the current Juve boss, and Carlo Ancelotti as the two favorites.
Darren Moore seems to have at least brought some pride back to the Baggies,. Unfortunately , it's too little too late.
Could the Baggies beat the United and Liverpool in back to back weeks?
Hope so!!
Morning, UWS - how are you, mate?
The Baggies have everything to play for, so it could happen. Still - The Reds are in scintillating form. Mo Salah is on 30 goals now, four ahead of Harry Kane.
Liverpool have already been more exciting and more dangerous than United did in 90 minutes
I was joking about Moyes because he succeeded SAF, a Legend at OT, and he just happens to be against Wenger the first match after the announcement.
One nil!!
That didn't take long!!
Danny Ings with the goal... watching Jose??
WOW! That didn't take long. From the corner, Ings reacts first and stabs home.
Liverpool 0-1 up inside five minutes!
GOAL !!!! NO SURPRISE THAT LIVERPOOL TASKES AN EARLY LEAD, BUT A SURPRISE THAT DANNY INGS SCORES. HIS FIRST SINCE OCTOBER 2015
Start fast
Want a goal immediately
Thats the mindset there used to at Old Trafford
It came off a short corner as Mane cut inside a defender then passed into the box. Danny Ings smashed home from close range . Did he take the ball off a teammate's foot/.
Good morning, Dave . How have you been?
Why oh why can't United play this
Crazy weather in Blighty. Snowing earlier this month then the hottest April since 1949 earlier this week? Is that correct?
McLean was McDirty with that challenge on Van Dyjck.
Salah walks lie an Egyptian past Hegazxy, his international teammate, then shoots over from close range
Oh - Salah was in there and you would have bet your house on him scoring from that position. Deflected out for a corner.
I am well... happy it's the weekend
Wish I was more excited about it be FA Cup Semi Final weekend
Never think the Semis should be at Wembley. If they want them at a big stadium... have them both at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff
I would prefer it still for them to be on the same day and a neutral ground
There are plenty of big grounds available
Old Trafford, St James', The Em, SoL, Spurs new stadium
What are your thoughts on AW?
Look how tough it has been for United after SAF
Chelsea fans must be shaking their heads at Salah's form this season. They had him and they let him go in favor of bringing in big money flops like Morata and Ienacho.
How are United ahead of Liverpool... and Spurs?
Matty Phillips does well to cut past Moreno then his cross is cut out by Joe Gomez Addams for a Baggies corner. Dawsopn heads on the corner, but the offside flag is raised.
I agree with you, UWS. While it probably is time for Wenger to show - and he can go with dignity rather than getting the sack - it's never easy to move on from a manager with that kind of impact. I almost think that they should take a risk on a younger manager, but Wenger changed things for the club, so they're expectations are sky-high, just like at Old Trafford. I don't know who could fill Wenger's shoes.
What do you think about my Wenger comments
Were you guys in the Wenger Out column?
I was surprised about wenger, but the Gunner's form had been gradually slipping the past few years. He could have retired four years ago and gone out in a much better situation. Still one of the all time great managers.
I would not like to meet the new WBA manager in a dark alley - cor! He's a frighteningly big man.
The most important person on this matter is a certain Mr. Dahlgren down in Virginia?
What are his thoughts?
I've been Wenger out for many seasons now, simply because he had taken the club as far as he could. They didn't seem likely to do better than win the occasional cup. And that's probably not good enough for the club.
I was for the reasons I just mentioned. Mainly because he probably should have resigned . Immediately after one of the Cup Final wins would have been great.
I agree with Bob.
Gooner has been Wenger-Out for about two seasons now. As soon as Spurs started to nudge them out in the league and they weren't dead certs for the Champions League, he wanted to move on.
But now he may go out with a Europa League Final or even a win. That should be enough of a final fanfare.
Goal coming soon... I have to go to the loo!!
Bob, that's former Baggies defender , Darren Moore, who played with them in the early 2000s then played for the Rams in the late 2000s. He was a long time assistant with the Baggies under both Pulis and Pardew, and is supposed to be their Director of Football next season.
I think Watford vs Palace is the ONLY 10 AM Prem match. Not exactly exciting stuff. That' due to matches that conflicted with the cup semis
Ings heads overt off a cross from Milner.
Salah wins a free kick as he was held by his international teammate.
Free kick chance now - Salah and Milner over it.
Oh - not far wide from Salah!
OH!!! Salah curls the free kick and it's just wide. Ben Foster seemed to have no idea where it was going.
I agree with UWS that the two finals should be on the same day at different Premiership grounds, probably with no other matches going on that day. I miss those semis at Villa Park, Old Trafford, and - dare I say - Elland Road!
Hibs take the lead at Easter Road against Celtic
Celtic need a win to win their 7th straight title
Salah fouled again. This time by Kieran Gibbs.
The free kick is headed away
Welcome back, UWS. You didn't miss a goal.
Stunning!
Danny Ings down as he was runned into by a Baggies player.
Surprising that the Prem was clinched before the SPL . When did that last happen?
In truth, the Baggies haven't been in this one. They don't seem to have any sense of urgency. Just trying to keep the score down.
What's "stunning," mate?
Me not missing a goal
Agreed, but that's about all they can do. It's the hottest day of the season too, so that doesn't help.
Will both of you be here for the Cup Semi?
Not having good feelings about it
WBA have a corner after a bad giveaway by Gomez.
Gomez Addams gifts possession to McLean then the same player wins a corner off the same player after a one two with Runned On.
Unfortunately, I've got the in-laws in town this weekend, so I'm probably not around for it. I'm just enjoying some early matches while they're still sleeping.
Nobody bore the Brunt of that corner as it was too high for anyone to head on.
Talking weather... all my family have been rubbing it in about the weather this week.... we've had bloody snow in the air!!! It has been so cold!!
Yes, I will be around for the semi. The 10 AM match is a maybe,.
You'll be missed
Want updates? You usually ignore texts !!
YIKES!!!! Will this wintry weather linger into May. Hope you get some of that UK weather they've had the past few days.
Agreed. Sorry you won't b around.
The Baggies have looked better the past few minutes.
ooh, WBA could have easily scored there..... inches away
Sure thing, mate. I don't always get them live, as I don't have a data plan on my phone. So, if I'm out and about, I'm not on a network.
OH!!! Volleyed just wide by J Rod off a cross from Liverwurst , who made Milner look like that
I agree - it's good to see the Baggies suddenly creeping into this one.
Watford vs Palace is the only Prem match being played at 10 AM today due to the cup semis.
The Cup semi is on the local FOX station. Is that correct?
Darren Moore undefeated in his first two matches as caretaker manager. A draw vs the Swans and a win at OT. He should have replaced Pulis
Oh - Ings was in there for #2 - Foster did well.
OH!!! Ben Foster with a great close range block from Ings then headed out for a corner. Great pass from Salah.
A lot of snow on the ground here in the elevated areas. Some are really sick of it. Doesn't really bother me. I prefer it to really hot weather.
Yes, I checked that last night
A minute of stoppage time.
Into stoppage time and I'm off for a shower, lads. Back for the second half.
Liverpool one up at the half thanks to an early goal from Danny Ings. That was his first goal since October 2015.
HT....Thought Pool would be out of sight
Baggies still have hope
The second half is underway.
Off for the second half
As things stand the Baggies will be relegated tomorrow with a Stoke win vs Burnley or a Swans draw at Citeh
That should have been a penalty!!!
Liverpool would be a point behind United if the scores stay the same. I really want United finish in second
United did just lose to the bottom club at home but our run in isn't that bad
Arsenal H
Brighton A
West Ham A
Watford H... I'll miss this one... I will be at Matt's Siena Graduation. 8:30 in the morning!!!!
Back from the shower all squeaky clean. Time for a second cuppa.
Hibs one up vs Celtic at the half. As things stand Celtic will NOT clinch the SPL today They could clinch with an Aberdeen loss at Killie and a Rangers loss tomorrow vs the Queen of Hearts
Welcome back, Bob
Congratulations to Matt Quite an accomplishment. What is his major?
Macclesfield one up at Eastleigh. If that score holds then Macclesfield will clinch promotion and a return to the Football League after an absence of a few years
Ing seemed to kick out there after he was fouled.
Marvelous accomplishment for Matt. What is Jonathan's plan for college?
There seems to be a bit of a battle between Ings and Hegazy going on.
Great run by Matty Phillips then his pas sis cut out for a Baggies corner.
Jonathan is finishing up his SECOND year at Hudson Valley CC. He is working on computer programming
He hopes to get a job and then continue on their dosh
The hour mark is up - so that means that changes are nigh.
Wow - how did I miss out on that? Crazy how time flies. Best of luck to your kids - I hope to see them all soon.
Bob called it... subs being told tactics
Wishing Jonathan the best. You and Kathy doing a great job with the three sons.
I know!!
I'm not old BUT Tom will be 26, Matt is 22 and Jon will be 20!!!
Thanks David
Two changes for Pool - goalscorer Ings coming off for Bobby Firmino. Mane off for The Ox.
A double substitution from Klopp with the match vs Roma in mind. Bobby F for Ings and the Ox for Mane.
Liverpool look in control here. A win would take Liverpool to within a point of second-placed United, having played a game more.
Moreno booked for a foul on Runned On just outside the Pool box.
Agreed. A think our game in hand is at the Hammers, which is never an easy match
Not to show off but I got this text a few weeks ago from my friend Walt....it's nice to hear
Hey...I meant to tell you today but forgot.
All of your sons have become very nice young men.
They are all friendly and funny and considerate.
There are not many people who can raise three boys as well as that.
You should both be proud of yourselves.
Darren Moore is Jonny on the Spot with a substitution as Evans is on for McLean
One change for the Baggies now - your old United pal Jonny Evans coming on to replace McLean.
Two nil
Salah nets... AGAIN
GOAL! Salah scores! Of course!
GOAL !!! SALAH WITH HIS 31ST PREM GOAL OF THE SEASON PUTTING POOL TWO UP. SURELY THIS ONE IS DONE AND DUSTED.
Route 1 from Pool. They went back to front really quickly. The Ox laid on a great ball and Salah chipped over Foster to find the net.
0-2!
The goal started with a long clearance from Karius, which found Bobby F. The two subs combined as Bobby F passed to the Ox , who passed to Salah, who scored past the stranded Ben Foster.
Well stated by Walt and definitely true
Thanks again
Gibbs off now and Burke on now. Not sure any of these changes are going to make a huge difference to this match.
An attacking switch from Darren Moore as promising young winger , Matt Burke, on for Kieran Gibbs. One must wonder why such a promising youngster would not have been given more of a chance this season with all the Baggies struggles.
GOAL! Livermore gets one back!
Baggies get a goal back... come on WEST BROM!!!
Macclesfield two up at Eastleigh as they are about to clinch a return to the Football League
GOAL !!! JONNY ON THE SPOT AS THE BAGGIES PULL ONE BACK. A CURLING CORNER FROM BRUNT WAS HEADED ON BY HEGAZY . KARIUS SAVED FROM J ROD AND JONNY EVANS SAMSHED HOME THE REBOUND FROM CLOSE RANGE
Sorry. Liverwurst, but he was Jonny on the spot.
The Baggies scoring from corners in consecutive matches, which they weren't doing this season
The final roll of the dice from Klopp, which is designed to hold on to the lead, but you never know with Loveren as he's on for Salah.
Hibs two up vs Celtic. Looks like they will have to wait another week to clinch the SPL.
Salah gets a heroes ovation from the Liverpool away crowd.
That was the final roll of the dice from Klopp. It's designed to hold on to the lead, but you never know with Loveren.
Great cup semi post, UWS. I will chat with you on that thread for the late one.
Matt Burke wins a free kick outside the Pool box.
I was just going to say that I put up a new post for the big one
BLOODY HELL
IT'S DESMOND!!!!
GOAL! Rondon equalizes! The Hawthorns goes potty!
Can they get the winner????
GOAL !!!! THE BAGGIES HAVE COME FROM BEHIND TO MAKE IT DESMOND. GREAT FREE KICK FROM KIERAN GIBBS AND THE HEADER HAS RUNNED ON FOR AN EQAULIZER.
The final roll of the dice from Darren Moore and well done. He's gong for the win as Hal Robson-Kanu is on for J Rod.
This would keep Liverpool three points behind United with United having a game in hand... could be six up with nine to play for
Into stoppage time.
A quartet of those minutes.
As I stated, you never know with Loveren. Poor marking from the free kick allowed the equalizer.
Why didn't WBA play like this months ago...weeks ago!!
Who da thunk it.. win one game from September then beat United and Liverpool in back to back games... COME ON... MAKE IT HAPPEN
Darren Moore undefeated vs BOTH United and Liverpool. Who would have thought that. Also undefeated in his three matches in charge.
Liverpool have rather thrown this one away. They were total control of this match an hour in. But this is why they're third rather than challenging for the title.
Milner over with a long range effort.
Do you think Liverpool are going to go thru vs Roma?
I can't see me wanting Liverpool getting their 6th CL but I don't want Real to win it again!!
In the 80s I was rooting for Pool's Cup wins
To Answer your question they would have if Darren Moore had been in charge instead of Pardew.
I think that Pool will beat Roma. Not sure about topping Real, though. Might be a bit too much for them.
It's over as the Baggies have come from two down as it finishes Desmond. The Baggies cannot be relegated this weekend even though they're hanging by a thread.
That's it
Desmond stays for good
Great couple of weeks for them
I am off for walkies and will be back for the middle match and OF COURSE the Semi
Have a good rest of the day Bob...you'll be missed
Updates?
Celtic pull one back at Easter Road as they trail Hibs 2-1.
Watford vs Palace is underway from VR
Palace should be all but safe with a win at VR, which would put them on 37 points with the Hornets. A Hornets win definitely means safety as it put them on 40 points.
OH!!!! Okaka hits the corner of post and bar off a cross from Deeney after he initially past to Deeney. It was a counter that started with a tackle in midfield on Milovojevic
I am back from walkies... a very chilly wind!
I was listening to 5Live
Macclesfield won today and are back in the Football League
Cheltenham take an early lead at the Abbey
Congratulations to Macclesfield on clinching a return to the Football League as they won 0-2 at Eastleigh
Wigan playing at Highbury today.... Fleetwood Town.
Wigan have beaten more Premier League teams this season than West Brom!!
Welcome back. Glad you're inside where you warm up
Just about to turn on Final Score
Hibs defeated Celtic 2-1 , which means they will have wait until next weekend to clinch the SPL unless Killie defeat Aberdeen AND Hearts win at Ibrox.
Blades take the lead at St Andrews
Sunderland play fellow drop zone side Burton today.
Bob will not be pleased that the Evil Blades have taken the lead at St. Andrews. Fred will be
Cambridge tie it up
Did you see Joey Barton took charge of Fleetwood this week
Cambridge ties it up vs Cheltenham while the Real Dons take the lead vs Oldham in a relegation six pointer.
He did? That's a horrible mistake by Stevie Nicks and Mick Fleetwood.
Leeds hosting Barnsley at ER. It is their manager's former club
Leeds have only won TWICE since Boxing Day!!
The Shrews take the lead v Bury
Wigan would have to wait for promotion
Klopp complaining that the pitch was dry. It should have been watered!
Stop complaining
Cheltenham retake the lead vs Cambridge
Joe Ward called for a foul on Perreryra just outside the Palace box.
Last time only one game was played on a Sat at 3 was in 2015
Spurs won at Loftus Road 2-1
Luton could join Ac Stan in League 1 next season with a win but are one down at Carlisle
Sunderland and Burton not just in the drop zone , but a real loser's bowl as both will surely face Accrington Stanley in L1 next season.
Hull take the lead at Ashton Gate
The Shrews take the lead vs already relegated Bury
Barnet , bottom of the Football League, takes a much needed lead vs Newport County
Hennessey does well to react by preventing what would have been an OG by Joe Ward
Wolves take the lead at Bolton
Championship time?
Leeds take the lead!!!
Wolves takes the lead vs Bolton . They just need a draw to be Champions
WAY HAY! Congrats, Bob.
Joe ward , having a tough match, is now booked.Concedes another free kick in a dangerous position and again easily cleared.

Salford losing at home to Boston...who just beat 2nd place Harrogate 3-0.
Harrogate losing as well so they would still go up

Brum tie it up vs the Blades
