The Bielsa Era Begins!
I'm all set for the beginning of a new era at Leeds United as Argentine maestro Marcelo Bielsa takes the helm for his first match on the hallowed turf at Elland Road. Bielsa has brought in some really interesting new signings, including Boro striker Patrick Bamford and Wolves left back Barry Douglas. And his association with Pep Guardiola promises some loan signings to come. Today's visitors are the recently relegated Stoke City. Let's hope we can keep their losing record going. Come on, you Whites!

Biers is the 13th Leeds manager since 2013. He'll be trying to awake the sleeping giant within us, which the likes of Dave Hockaday, Steve Evans and Uwe Rosler before him have failed to do.
Gary Rowett's Stoke side are no joke. He's splashed the cash, bringing in Oghenekaro Etebo, Tom Ince and Benik Afobe in the off season. This will be a real test for us.
Team news out of Elland Road:
Leeds United: Peacock-Farrell; Ayling, Berardi, Cooper, Douglas; Klich, Hernandez, Phillips; Saiz, Roofe, Alioski
Subs: Blackman, Jansson, Dallas, Baker, Harrison, Roberts, Bamford
Stoke City: Butland; Bauer, Martins Indi, Shawcross, Pieters; Etebo, Allen; Ince, N’Diaye, McClean; Afobe
Subs: Federici, Williams, Edwards, Fletcher, Crouch, Bojan, Diouf
Referee: Scott Duncan
Of the new signings, only Barry Douglas starts today. Bamford, Cook, Harrison and new Chelski loanee goalkeeper Jamal Blackman start on the bench.
It's fittingly Paul Madeley Day at Elland Road today. Nice tribute to him.
We're about ready to get started then. Leeds players in all white in a huddle. Stoke playing in an odd purple away strip.
Some rugged challenges to start this match.
Great pic Bob...I've been there!!
ER looks packed!! Great to see
Chance to see how Leeds fares against one of the promotion favorites. MOT!
I've read that your new manager likes to ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK
Wish we had one like that!!
Good, bright start from us at the start of this match. Early corner earned.
You look great in the Leeds jersey. Great picture.
Dangerous corner...just missed by everyone
Gotta go open the pool for Doug
Dangerous corner and Roofe tracks it down to earn another one.
Hiya, Dave - how was the walkies?
Oh - Roofe goes close from a great corner in. Great save by Butland.
Corner glanced on by Mini Cooper . Win another corner
I agree with you - I hope that El Loco is all about the Attack, Attack, Attack!
Great close range reflex saver by Butland from Roofe.
Welcome, MUR - thanks for the praise.
Wonder if Butland will stay with Stoke or move to a Prem club. Only a few days remaining for him to move
I expect that several of these players will be on their way out, including Butland and Shawcross.
Cheers, Bob. Here to help[.
Kal Phillips has been working on a new hairstyle over the close season, I see. Hope he sticks around with us. I worry that the club might sell him.
With the additions of Etebo and McLean s=Stoke must be one of the favorites for promotion. Gary Rowett is a great manager as well. The move of the hostile gnome may help with team spirit
Great tracking back by Douglas there - I've got a lot of hope in him for us.
I'm back
Wonder why Ince left the Prem for the Championship
I would think so, too. They've really splashed the cash around. And Gary Rowett is quality.
I reckon that Ince thinks he can help Stoke gain immediate promotion back to the Prem.
Was Douglas signed from Wolves? If so, he had an excellent season last season
City still racking up the chances at Wembley
AThe transfer window closing on Thursday may benefit Leeds. It gives clubs less time to make deals,
GREAT GOAL!!!!!!!
Great run and pass
GOAL! Saiz threads the needle and Klich scores our opener!
Wish my United played like this United!!
definitely onside
That really was a super goal and gives me a lot of hope for our season. Terrific work by Saiz there.
Your boss looks like he doesn't give two hoots!!
Ince tries one but it's well wide of the mark.
I like the pace there are going forward
YESSSSSSS!!!!! LEEDFS TAKE THE LEAD. A PRE SAIZ THROUGH BALL AND IN THE KLICH OF AN EYE LEEDS SCORE WITH AS GREAT FINISH PAST BUTLAND
Almost two nil!!
Great team goal and like the way Leeds play
Are you that far behind MUR?
Very cool character there, Bielsa.
Chelsea go close.
Butland does well to block a Pre Said long range effort headed for the upper 90
A tuna salad sandwich has just arrived at my side. Lovely!
I was listening to the radio yesterday and there is some new rule about loaning out players
Do you know what it is? I don't
A quartet of stoppage time minutes at Wembley
Not sure about the new rule, but would be interested too find out about it
A delicious lunch, Bob
Phew - that was a key touch there while Joe Allen was prowling.
Bailey Peacock-Farrell flaps hius wings to turn away Stoke's first corner
I agree with Bob. Bielsa does care, he just has a cool demeanor.
Oh - Ince clips the top of the bar with that effort. He is dangerous.
Ince hits the crossbar...phew
OH!!!! A long range effort from, Ince clips thew top of the bar and goes over. Nearly tied up
City should have scored number three with only 30 secs of the 94 minutes left
Tyler says... It could have a lot more that two nil here
Stones being taken off at the 94:15 minute....whistle blows right away...pointless!!
First time in FIVE years the Champions have won the CS
Chelski not looking so good, eh?
Over at Wembley as Citeh comfortably defeat Chelsea 2-0. First time the Prem Champs have won the shield in five years
A rule has to made for this crap
Agreed, Bob. Chelsea not looking like favorites for the Prem title;e.
Agreed, Dave. As you stated, bloody pointless.
Half way through the first half and I'm a happy chappy so far. Let's keep it up!
Pep wearing a t-shirt and Khakis....show some respect. Wear team colors or a suit and tie
He's is just so damn cool
Stoke should have done better there!
Phew - Stoke were on for the break there but couldn't make the most of it. Berardi is just not good enough. I don't know why he's still in the side.
Again... defenders phaffing about with the ball gives away a chance.... how is this expectable ? I always thought attackers could take the risks
Etebo fails to beat Peacock as the tame shot fails to take flight
One more complaint of the modern game.... the trophy presentation is after the whole team is up there and get their medals... too crowded!!
I don't like that, either. All the confetti cannon nonsense on the pitch is wrong, too.
Its not him but what old commentator does it sound like at ER?
Agreed. Hate the crowding during the trophy presentation. A pure lack of class and style.
I don't know - they all sound the same to me at this point, with the exception of Martin Tyler.
It sounds like Tony Gubba
all I have to say for next Sunday....COME ON ARSENAL!!!
Bob, I'm delighted for you that Leeds is off too such a great start. Oles from the LUFC fans,
I second that, UWS
Mike Summerbee going to give out the Shield
Pieters getting a bollocking from the ref after that tasty challenge.
Of course, the Chelsea manager went up but for the medal but Pep is too cool to go up
Norman Hunter in the stadium
That foul was rash rather than Pre Saiz. Nothing like Martin Peters with that challenge,.
The pitch is cutting up a bit
Bit early for the Ole routine. I'll join in at the 90th minute mark if we're still in the lead.
Pep thinks he's too cool after the fantastic season. Needs to be brought back down to earth
Thought I heard Oles from you. Was that Kate?
Oh - great stuff from us again. And a super stop by Butland. He's keeping Stoke in this.
Oh - now Roofe goes just wide. Another great move through Saiz.
Another great move by Leeds... nice volley saved by Butts
Another chance...just wide
Exciting season ahead for you Bob!!
Oh - now Ali is close with a header there. Love this pressure from us.
Butland superbly saves a powerful close range volley from Allioski off a nice pass from Hernandez then Roofe shoots inches wide.
I hope we keep playing like this. We started like this last season as well but then it all fell apart.
Leeds have created many chances but have given a few up as well
I did hear earlier that Leeds score a lot BUT concede a lot too
Coming down to the end of a very satisfying first half of the first match of the season. Hope we can keep it up.
MUR, is it your video or comments that are delayed?
Well, that was the pattern last year.
TWO NIL!!!!!
At the half time mark....weak effort!!
YESSSS!!!
Pablo makes it 2-0! Butland with a real clanger!
I like how Leeds go forward whenever they can
Butland should have easily saved that one...great time to score!!
I'll take it - so will Pablo!
Leeds started the day in 17th place and are now up to SECOND
Need to score another FOUR to go top
Half time
Long may it continue Bob!!
WOW! 2-0 up at half time. And we've played really well. That couldn't have gone any better. Keep it up, boys!
WAY HAY! Pablo Hernandez puts Leeds two up thats to a howler from Butland. Congrats, Bob.
Leeds two up at the half against one of the promotion favorites. WOW!
The Charity Shield had some good stuff at half time on ESPN+
This match is dead silence
Ben Fisher of the Guardian says: "So far, so very good for Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds. Stoke have been nothing short of abysmal, abject in all senses but credit to Leeds who have harried them into the ground. Roofe has been particularly bright. As for Stoke, their midfield has been totally bypassed time and again, while an isolated Benik Afobe’s offered nothing."
Stoke have created a few chances tho
As things stand, we're sitting second in the table, behind Brentford on goal difference.
Second half underway. MOT!
My MUTV link doesn't want to connect... being very annoying
Right now it is the 1999 CL show down with Bayern
I would guess it was the Final even though we drew twice with them in the group stages... as we did with Barcelona. Both Barca games ended 3-3
What about that for a group
United, Barca, Bayern and Brondby
United drew the four games vs Barca and Bayern but made hay against Brondby winning 5-0 and 6-2
And we're back on at Elland Road. More of the same, please.
31,000 at ER...not quite capacity
Leeds needs three without reply to go top.
What a fantastic turnout. Long may that continue,
Still no luck with MUTV
It is the group game anyway
We can build on that. If we start winning, we'll get sell out crowds.
Great ball forward by Douglas there but Roofe couldn't make the most of it.
Now Pablo can float one in. Oh - good delivery but Klich couldn't get on the end of it.
Barry Douglas looks an excellent signing from Wolves.
Oh no! A stupid tangle there and Ince goes down. Penalty to Stoke.
Terrible mistake at the back from Leeds....awful defending
Had an easy chance to clear and then Ince made the most of it
Penalty to Stoke...Goal
And Afobe steps up to stroke home. Peacock-Farrell should have stood up and gathered easily.
2-1.
Okay, let's get another, lads.
Who's the ponytail boy that couldn't dribble the ball out?
Unfortunately it was Barry Douglas who gave up the penalty there. Otherwise, he has been excellent.
Luke Ayling.
Who's Ponytail boy...hit his heal when he should have just dribbled or cleared out
Sorry, Bob as Afobe pulls one back with a spot kick. Poor defending, but thought Ince went down rather easily. A shift decision, IMHO.
He was Ailing trying to get the ball out
MUR moment there!
Correct. I thin it was Luke Ayling that failed to clear and Barry Douglas called for the trip
Hernandez found Roofe in an acute angle there. Couldn't find man. I'd like to see Bamford come on soon.
So bad with the keeper and defenders there... Butland kicks it straight out... DON'T GET IT!!
Oh - Ali nearly found Ayling at the back post there. Nicely defended. Corner.
BOOM BOOM. Nice one there. He was Ayling there as he failed to clear.
YESSSS!!!!!!!
Coop steps in and nods home our third!!!
GOAL....Cooper gets Leeds two goal lead back!!
Decent corner... even though it was front post crap
That was the 1 out of 100 that works
Really poor defending there from the Stoke backfour, particularly Martins Indi. We'll take it.
3-1 Whites!
YOU CAN'T REPEAT MY PUN!!!
WAY HAY! LEEDS NIOW LEAD 3-1 THANKS TO A HEADER FROM MINI COOPER FROM A CORER TAKEN BY BARRY DOUGLAS.
Now let's keep it tight at the back!
Leeds still need THREE more to go top
Two would keep them in second because of the alphabet
A little more animated now from Bielsa. He wants this win!
again...is it your comments or video that is delayed?
You're normally right in there but seem to be delayed today
Corner driven by Mini Cooper as IMartins indy 500 was not at the races, allowing him that free header. Barry Douglas redeemed himself with an assist minutes after conceding the penalty
Leeds fans swearing nice and loud for the telly
Geez
That's our style. Apologies to the kiddies listening in.
Kate watching this with you Bob?
I think my video is delayed a couple of minutes and I'm adjusting to using an iMac. Everyone's patience would be greatly appreciated.,
McClean is furious at Etebe there as the pass doesn't come off for him.
Ex Red Devil Fletcher coming on for the Potters
Of course the Leeds fans boo
And he gets the hook right after. Your old boy Darren Fletcher coming on. Boos all round.
I thought mine was better than yours due to better creativity. I applaud you for your efforts
Would like to see some changes from Bielsa as well right about now. Give the news boys a run out, eh?
This stadium and fans deserve the Premier League!!
When is the last season they were there Bob?
Nah - Kate's on the phone with her mum.
I'm ignoring that statement MUR
Be original !!
Poor form Kate
2001/2002 season we got relegated.
That didn't take long after being top and being in the CL semis... wow!
As if your was. I still think mine was more creative.
Thought Leeds was relegated in 2003/2004.
Yeah - it was all starting to unravel at that point as a result of Ridsdale's overspending and the Majestyk nightclub scandal.
I may be wrong but I thought it was the season after we were in the CL.
A chance... should have done better there!! Hit the big rectangle!!
Didn't they survive one year by beating Arsenal at Highbury giving the League to United?
Think that was 03
So I think they did go down in 04
It's more of a transition than I thought. I already know that I will be several minutes behind for the next few weeks not matter how hard I try, so bear with me. Even the mouse and keypad are completely different.
That sounds right.
I remember being at Matt's soccer tourney in Saratoga when I was listening to BBC World Service with Leeds 3-2 at Highbury
I remember that match. I think Leeds won 2-3 , which basically cost the Gunners the title.
Viduka scored
Amazing to think that this ground has seen European Cup semi final action and Johnstone's Paint Trophy Northern Division action!
Still no luck with my MUTV link
I watched it and it was a really entertaining match
Sorry, mate. I wish it were on ESPN+.
Adobe went down under Cooper's challenge. He just ran into him like a brick wall.
I think we started getting coverage over here at the start of the Premier League. I think it was just highlight shows at first on Fox Soccer Channel
1995 Cup Final was live
Crouchie is going to have his nachos and is coming on for Afobe who's still have a polite chat wth Coop.
Crouchie on for Afobe on the final roll of the dice for Gary Rowett
Stu Dallas coming on for goalscorer Klich. Bielsa must be saving the new boys.
A little under fifteen minutes left to see out now. Keep it tight, lads.
Stuart Dallasfrom W Yorkshire, not North Texas in the Klich of an eye
Crouch wins a free kick off Dallas as the subs come together.
Free kick chance for Stoke from the Rugby ground... easy save
McClean pulls a good save out of P-F, but when it comes back in he looses out to Crouchie and Martins-Indi puts his header over. Phew!
Remember watching the 19994 Final, but not sure if it was live. I think the 1998-99 season was the first season watching the Prem for Yours Truly
Again... Leeds go short to the center back... bad pass to fullback who struggles to control.... ball hit long!
Why didn't the keeper just hit it long ?
I watched the 94 Final on tape from the BBC. My family recorded the entire day...9:30 am
I know I watched the 95 and 96 Finals on Fox
Not enjoying this now. I don't why we've stopped playing. We were so good in the first half. Kal Phillips should have been booked for going over the top of the ball there.
Into the last ten minutes
Over 34,000 in the stadium....largest for ten years
Well done
Commentator says it was over 34K today - biggest first day crowd for over 10 years!
Modern Day football Bob
Two footed challenge by Kal Phillips on Fletch. Surprised he got away with that. Over 34,000 and the biggest crowd in ten years according to the announcer
He said 31 earlier. What is the capacity?
This one seems to be petering out now.
