Election Night Special!
Hiya, LOBers - it's another big election night in the United States. The House, Senate and several governors' houses are up for grabs tonight. I'll be joining a big campus election results watch party over at our student center here at Fredonia tonight and will be chipping in with my usual comments throughout the evening. So, pour yourself a stiff cocktail (we'll likely all need one or two this evening) and join me for a bit of political banter.

I'll go out on a limb and give you Blue Devil's predictions for tonight:
House of Reps - Dems flip 30 seats, thus regaining control with a six-seat majority.
Senate - Repubs flip 1 seat, thus extending their control to a two-seat majority.
Governors - Dems flip 7 seats, including key swing states such as Florida, Ohio and Wisconsin
What do the rest of you lot think?
The first poll closing will come up at the top of the hour now. We'll see some bellwether results coming in shortly.
The early results from a lot of these states, especially those with a significant urban v. rural divide, always scare the crap out of me, the first precincts are always small, rural ones with heavy Republican voting bases. So, right now Joe Donnelly looks in real trouble in Indiana. Hopefully, Indianapolis is going to come steaming in late on.
At 7pm now, the Indiana race is too close to call. Sanders in Vermont and Kaine in VA re-elected.
The Georgia Governor race is too close to call.
Jennifer Wexton appears to be coasting to victory in VA-10 around the Charlottesville area. That's the first flip of the night.
Democrats need 22 seats to flip now for control of the House.
Sheered Brown has been successful in defending his Senate seat in Ohio.
Second flip of the night. Donna Shalala has picked up a seat in Florida.
Moments from the next set of poll closings.
Armed with Pinot Grigio, let’s see how long I can last before my nerves give out
Hi there, Bets - how are you feeling tonight?
Tight as a tick in the Florida races right now.
Democrats have picked up another governors' seat.
Anxious!
James Carville is already talking doom and gloom about there not being a Blue Wave. Shhhh....
Me too. I want to see some flips soon.
What coverage are you watching?
Bob Menendez has squeaked out a win in New Jersey.
Bugger! Rick Scott seems to be pulling away a bit in the Florida Senate race.
MSNBC. Love Steve Kornacki and his board. Highly amusing
You?
I'm a big Kornacki fan, too. I've been reading his book recently.
Yeah - I'm plugged in to MSNBC and PBS flipping back and forth. We're about to leave for a watch party over on campus in a few minutes. Not sure what coverage they'll have on.
Good evening Bob and Betsy. Just arrived home. Are your predictions accurate?
Evening, MUR - it’s been a slow start, as with United. Dems have flipped two seats so far.
Conor Lamb has flipped another House seat in PA. Dems now need 20 to claim the House.
And there’s another in PA - Dems now need 19.
And there is #5 - Jason Crow in Colorado. Down to 18. This is ticking along nicely now.
Yes! #6 in CT. Now the Dems need 17. Keep it rolling.
The wave is starting to pick up. #7 out in Kansas.
Sherrill in NJ brings #8; 15 to go.
Wow! #9 and 10 came through during the ad break. 11, too Bring on the wave!
12 seats to go - piece of piss!
#12!!!!!
On the Senate side, it’s still just that one GOP pick-up in Indiana with Joe Donnelly going down.
Dems just lost that one grrrymandered district that they were expected to lose in PA. Back to 11.
Bad news about Texas. Cruz won but did not Cruise. O'Rourke made him sweat it out.made him sweat it out.
Yes! Back up to 12 seats flipped.
Was that winning New Jersey number 12 that was flipped.
Nice! Colin Alted, a former NFL linebacker has won in Texas!
I kind of expected Cruz to win; Texas isn’t there yet.
So the latest is a pickup of 10 in the house by the Democrats and two buy the Republicans in the Senate
Agreed Bob but at least it was a closer Run Race then we would have expected about a year ago
Not surprised about the linebacker winning. At least not in Texas.
Need to keep the momentum going here.
Excellent! 13 flipped seats now; 10 to go.
It will be really close. Not sure if they'll get those other 10 but it's going to be really close
I think they’ll get there with the California seats but it will be tight.
14!!!!!! 9 seats to flip now.
Now 14 seats gained in the house. Maxine Waters licking her chops.
Bad news out of Ohio where Mike Dewine has won the Govs race.
The Democrats to gain a senate seat in Nevada
Heidi Heidkamp has lost in N. Dakota. That is a second pickup for the GOP in the Senate.
Nevada will really help; we need AZ too.
The Democrats gained a couple of House Seats in Texas. The Times They Are a-changing, mate
Woo hoo! ABC has called the House for the Dems!!
A runoff for the senate seat in the Old Miss?
So this is looking like the split decision that I expected.
Looks like it.
Interesting that the Dems gained the the house but the Republicans the Senate. How do you interpret that?
The Senate map was always really hard for the Dems this time with so many trying to defend seats in states that Trump won. This is still a good night for Dems, just not a great night.
Agreed. Minimal goal achieved. I am just disappointed that a few big states like Florida and Ohio remain in Republican leadership, which may impact how voters there view themselves in 2 years time.
MUR, you must remember that not all Senate seats were up for grabs, and that the open seats were in places that voted for Trump two years ago.
I think that serves to obscure the narrative which is clearer in the House where every seat was being contested: there is a swing to the Democrats in the overall population. Now, that means less in a country with these weird voting laws that favor rural voters and are subject to gerrymandering.
Sorry that I can't wait up for your comments. It is time for me to hit the sack.
It looks like it will be a very competitive race two years from now unless Mueller's investigation comes up big.
