Lakenheath Old Boys
We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!
454 Comments:
The teams coming out at Stamford Bridge:
Chelsea (4-3-3 implacabilmente): Kepa; Azpilicueta, Rudiger, David Luiz, Alonso; Jorginho, Kante, Kovacic; Pedro, Giroud, Hazard. Subs: Caballero, Christensen, Zappacosta, Fabregas, Loftus-Cheek, Willian, Morata.
Fulham (4-2-3-1 sperimentale): Sergio Rico; Christie, Odoi, Mawson, Le Marchand; Chambers, Seri; Johansen, Cairney, Sessegnon; Mitrovic. Subs: Bettinelli, Ream, Bryan, Cisse, Kebano, Ayite, Kamara.
Referee: Craig Pawson (Sheffield)
So for Chelsea, it's Ollie Giroud preferred to Morata and Pedro over Wilian.
For Fulham, bad boy Mitrovic is back in the fold up front.
Kickoff time - both teams wearing their traditional kids.
Cyrus Christie with an early shot on goal. Easily handled by Kepa.
GOAL! A perfect start for the Blues as Pedro opens the scoring in the fourth minute!
That goal was entirely made by Ngolo Kante whose got a more attacking role today. He picked the pocket of a Fulham player and then went galloping off on a great run. After dishing off to Pedro, the Spaniard jinked inside his man and finished in the bottom corner.
1-0 Chelsea!
That Pedro goal has allowed Chelsea to leapfrog over their London rivals Spurs into third again. Spurs of course will try to rectify that later.
Breaking news - in the Euro 2020 draw this morning, England have been grouped with the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Montenegro and Kosovo in Group A.
The Group of Death is Group C with the Netherlands, Germany, Norn Ireland, Estonia and Belarus.
That draw in full:
Group A: England, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Kosovo
Group B: Portugal, Ukraine, Serbia, Lithuania, Luxembourg
Group C: Netherlands, Germany, Northern Ireland, Estonia, Belarus
Group D: Switzerland, Denmark, Rep of Ireland, Georgia, Gibraltar
Group E: Croatia, Wales, Slovakia, Hungary, Azerbaijan
Group F: Spain, Sweden, Norway, Romania, Faroe Islands, Malta
Group G: Poland, Austria, Israel Slovenia, Macedonia, Latvia
Group H: France, Iceland, Turkey, Albania, Moldova, Andorra
Group I: Belgium, Russia, Scotland, Cyprus, Kazakhstan, S Marino
Group J: Italy, Bos-Herz, Finland, Greece, Armenia, Liechtenstein
I'm still not seeing the whole point of the Nations League. That looks like the same old Euro draw to me, just more comprised into 18 months rather than two years.
Decent free kick chance here for Chelsea but Sideshow Bob blasts it into the wall.
Morning Bob
You're still Mr Negative Nations League!!
Did you notice that the four semi finalists are only in a group of 5 and not 6.
Since the goal, Fulham have at least constrained Chelsea from attacking.
Morning, UWS. I'm still not getting it. That draw looks identical to the draws of old, just that it's been done a year later than it should've been. Now teams have 18 months rather than two years to play the matches. Match compression.
And why are all the minnows still in the draw? I thought the whole point was to weed out some of them so that the big teams aren't playing so many matches. We've got got Malta, Faroes, Andorra, bloody San Marino.
Well, the qualifying matches would have started in September. That means that for the next year, all the international breaks would have been qualifying and friendlies. Now they will have to get the qualifying done quicker, there will be no room for friendlies.
Oh - Giroud nearly slid in there for a second goal. Sergio Rico scrambled it away.
Big whoopity whoop. Apart from the Germans, none of the relegated sides really seem to have suffered. What benefit did England really get over, say, Spain, apart from four opponents rather than five?
Half time at the Bridge
This Euro is being hosted in a lot of countries so no hosts will automatically qualify
Win the Nations League and Qualify!
I thought the NL games were very competitive and each team went out to win
Top two automatically qualify
The Nations League group winners are guaranteed a play off spot if needed
Nations League draw is tomorrow
They were friendlies with low stakes. That's it. And now teams have to scramble to get ten fixtures in before the fall.
You mentioned that both teams are wearing traditional kits... Fulham aren't wearing their black shorts
Second half underway
Ranieri has gone with two changes at the start of the second half.
Well spotted, mate. You're right.
Boo to Bob
England could win a trophy! I like it when United win the League Cup!
I'm going to keep banging away at this Nations League stuff until you agree with me, okay? ;-)
The League Cup is a real trophy. The Nations League is like the FIFA World Club Cup.
Oh - goalscorer Pedro nearly added to his tally there. Sergio Rico turned his shot around.
The League Cup is a third chance for a team to win a trophy behind the League and FA Cup
The Nations League is a third chance to win a trophy behind he World Cup and Euros
I sure want Kane to hold up the trophy!
Nobody cares about it - it doesn't have any history behind it. It's like the Tournoi. It's a promotional thing for UEFA ahead of the Euros.
You won't be happy if England place behind the Czechs because of match compression and player burnout and are forced to qualify through the playoffs.
ooh, I thought that was going to be an OG ! Mitrovic was there to knock it in.... following corner... great save
Oh - good save from Kepa. Fulham could easily have equalized there. They're still in this one.
They play those game anyway... this time all the games are qualifiers!
Top two qualify from each group. The playoff are based on the Nations League. All the group winners of the NL groups are guaranteed a playoff spot if they don't qualify thru the group stages.
The four Nations League winners are in
Scotland are TWO wins away from qualifying
Fulham fans are starting to get some hope back.
Yeah - but under the old system, we'd have been playing some of the matches against Bulgaria and the Czechs in the fall, spread over 18 months. Now they're stuffed into less than a year. That's too many competitive matches.
As I said earlier in the fall, the Nations League didn't replace friendlies, they replaced qualifiers against the Czechs and Bulgaria.
Competitive matches are better that friendlies.
So just cancel the friendlies and be done with it!
That's it... I have decided you are BANNED from watching our beloved England in June!!!
Good morning Bob and Dave. Just woke up and brewing a hot pot of coffee. Will be joining you in just a few minutes.
Morning, MUR! How are you, mate?
Loftus-Cheeky coming on for Kovacic.
Why? I like friendlies! I'm happy to watch England in their friendlies this summer.
NOPE...YOU'RE BANNED
And it's in the middle of MUR's retirement party. That's going to be a great time.
Doing well. How is everyone this morning?
I will be celebrating retirement by watching England in the NL my very first week as a retired teacher.
LOL!
We're having a spirited debate about the Nations League because the draw came out this morning.
Morning David
Make sure you kick Bob out of the room while watching the NL
He is banned
Morata misses a great chance from a rebound
The format for Euro qualify is a little different this time . The top two from each group qualify, so England would still qualify if they finish second. They are in a group of five instead of six since they are playing in the June tournament. The only playoffs will be the teams that were group winners in NL qualifying.
LOL!
England would still qualify for the playoffs if we finish fifth behind Moldova, right?
I can't believe Jose still has a job!!
Good morning, Dave. Hope you had a great time in the Big Apple. Bob can mow the lawn in oppressive heat when England play, LOL!
BOB'S OUT!!
No qualifiers for playoffs in Euro qualifying. Either finish top two or not qualify, but win the NL group. The Jocks could qualify through the playoffs. Serbia would be their toughest playoff opponent.
Bob's been a bit naughty?
Why can't I watch the Tournoi?
So England could finish behind the Czechs and Bulgaria and not qualify and after this NL nonsense?
A Cheeky second goal for the Blues
GOAL! Cheeky pops up to lash home Chelsea's second goal. Tony will be delighted down at the Walnut Tree.
GOAL !!!!! TONGUE N CHEEK PUTS CHELSEA TWO UP IN THE WEST LONDON DERBY. NICE PASS FROM HAZARD
I thought that one of the competitive advantages that teams who came top of their groups is that they were guaranteed spots in the playoffs, no?
England would qualify if they are winners of NL
England are already in the Play offs
BANNED
LOL! In true NL fashion, you can watch if you qualify winning a playoff.
Bob BANNED Dahlgren
I would really be shocked if England finish behind the Czechs and Frankenstein's lads. UWS is correct if the unlikely would happen.
I can have Elizabeth come up with a playoff. Just as in the NL, he can get a second chance.
Interesting that rivals Holland and Germany are in the same group after being in the same NL group
Why are all the captains wearing rainbow colored armbands this weekend?
Dunno
A trio of stoppage time minutes. Sounds like the NL song?
Long range effort from the Cottagers makes it halfway to Bob and Kate's house.
Chelsea host Citeh on Saturday. Sounds like the MOTD.
That's what I thought about the playoffs.
So, here's a bet for you. I'll bet that none of the four semi-finalists will need to rely on that status in order to make the playoffs. That is, that they will all come either top of second in their group, not any lower than that.
You name the stakes - any takers.
Cyrus Christie with a shot deflected for a corner.
The Market heads wide off of Siri's corner. and that's it as Chelsea win the W London Derby 2-0.
That's it - Chelsea run out winners. For a moment, it looked as if Fulham might get back into it. Chelsea are third, Fulham are rooted to the bottom.
Did you see that the Watford fans brought a banner to their match at Leicester thanking their late owner for allowing them to dream
Leicester gave all Watford fans free food and drink for their sentiments
Off to fix my brekkies ahead of the North London derby.
If that's the case then the second place teams in each group would make the playoffs. The four best League A teams that fail to qualify for the Euros make the playoffs. It may even go down to the last place tams in League A
Teams in the tunnel at the Em now:
Arsenal: Leno; Bellerin, Holding, Mustafi, Sokratis, Kolasinac; Xhaka, Torreira; Mkhitaryan, Iwobi, Aubameyang
Subs: Cech, Lichtsteiner, Maitland-Niles, Guendozi, Elneny, Ramsey Lacazette
Tottenham Hotspur: Lloris; Aurier, Foyth, Vertonghen, Davies; Dier; Sissoko, Eriksen, Alli, Son; Kane
Subs: Gazzaniga, Rose, Alderweireld, Winks, Walker-Peters, Llorente, Moura
Referee: Mike Dean
Either of you think that any of the semi-finalists would fail to place at least second even if there weren't a Nations League?
And we're away in the North London Derby!
They're off from the EM in the N London Derby
Aubama heads over off a cross from Miki after Ben Davies was caught in possession.
Will be back in a tick. Am busy preparing Sunshine's brekkies.
Positive start from the Gunners.
I'm not convinced that Sunshine is a footie fan. I think he likes tennis.
Probably not, but it gives a second chance to teams like the Jocks , who will probably place behind Belgium and Russia . I think it keeps the lesser teams happy and may be political.
Back from a short chilly damp walk
Was listening to 5Live and they gave an interesting fact
Cardiff and Arsenal are the only two teams that have not had the lead at half time the entire season
If the table reflected that, Arsenal would be 18th
LOL. Never thought of that. We can test your tennis theory in June,
5Live are still on air because they don't have the NoLo derby
They did say Final Score is on...I'm going to try and tune it in for all the Cup games
8 games started five minutes before the one at the Em
YIKES! Interesting stat. The Gunners have definitely been a second half team this season. They're off to a good start this match
Anyone think that the Nations League winner wouldn't qualify for the Euros through the normal process?
Welcome back. Should be quite a match.
Forget the Liverpool Everton Merseyside derby.... the other Merseyside derby has started... Tranmere and Southport has started
Serge Aurier called for a foul on Aubama near the corner flag.
Final Score has started... they are going to each of the grounds!! BRILIANT!!
Penalty to Arsenal!
PENALTY . VERTONGHEN CALLED FOR HAND BALL FROM THE DEAN OF OFFICIALS AND THE REPLAY SUPPORTS THAT
Handball.... penalty to the Arsenal!!
Abum to take.... ONE NIL
Aubameyang strides up and scores!
Poor penalty but they all count. 1-0 Arse!
GOAL !!! AUBAMA SCORES FROM THE SPOT, SENDING LLORIS THE WRONG WAY
Surely, Steve is dancing at the Harp pub. Will he be drinking a Harp? Will he play the Harp?
So as the commentator mentioned, Aubama is now on 9 at the top of the goalscorers chart, as Aguero didn't score yesterday.
Vertonghen was booked for that hand ball.
And Arsenal have leapfrogged Spurs into fourth now. They were third this morning. Suddenly they're out of the CL spots.
Oh - Son burst through and pulled a good save out of Jay Leno.
Tranmere lead vs Southport
Jay Leno with a near post save from Number One Son on A spuds counter, their first attack of the match
Oh - nearly a second for Aubama!
Rangers won at Hearts this morning....they are top of the Premiership for the first time since '07(something like that)
Arsenal should have doubled their lead!!
Aubama could not get a shot off from close range after Iwobi took too long to shoot on a Gunner's counter.
Abum looked like a bum with that whiff
Loving Final Score...they are showing the goals as they go in
3rd Round Draw tomorrow
I don't think any non league teams are thru yet
Celtic play Aberdeen in the Scots League Cup Final today, but still a great achievement for Stevie G's lads.
0-0 at Ashton Gate in the Champ
New boy Hoyth has a gash on his face that's opened up again. He'll need some treatment in a moment.
Barnet in the lead vs Stockport . An all non league match, so at least one non league team is guaranteed a spot in the Third Round
Final Score is going to all the grounds as the reporters are talking about the match... it is great
Portsmouth are the highest placed in the FA Cup ....until tomorrow!(hopefully they are still in it by then)
Iwobi with a close range effort blocked off the line.
They play at Rochdale. Are you confident?
I'll take it from your silence that none of you thinks that the eventual winner of the Nations League would fail to qualify for the Euros either through topping their group or through the playoffs. And none of you think that any of the four semi-finalists would come third in their group.
So, I'll ask you again - what's the point of the Nations League?
Is that score from Ashton Gate idle gossip?
Reporter on sideline...now talking to manager at Slough
BANNED
I think it's political because it keeps the lesser nations happy. For example, the Jocks have a second chance . Perhaps those countries will vote for UEFA's agenda in return.
Spurs are second best right now... have a chance of a break... just cut out
You'll be banned soon Mr Texas if you don't watch out!!
Oh - Son did really well there, slipping through on goal and then blasting at goal from an acute angle.
The Solihuill Moors and Wrexham will be in the draw after 0-0 draws vs league opponents.
don't mean to keep going on about it but I am loving going to all the FA Cup grounds and seeing the matches going on
It's always nice to get a second chance. Does that help my cause?
You two are not allowed to celebrate England winning a trophy that every European side had a chance to win!!!
Agreed, MUR. Top man.
Every team tried to win it too!!
The matches were great
What, MUR is going to be banned from his own retirement party?!
Only two goals in eight Cup matches. It's the Cup, not Serie A.
The Banned Duo is what I am calling you guys.... Hope Steve doesn't make it a TRIO
No NL allowed to be watched
LOL. Thanks, Bob. If we can't celebrate England then we can go to the beach and celebrate retirement.
Kate thinks that the two kits on display are too confusing because of the white sleeves and white shirts. So, there you go.
Steve is at the Irish pub cheering the fact that the Gunners lad in the N London Derby.
The two teams always wear their traditional kits in the N London Derby. It wouldn't be the N London Derby without that
I agree - but go telling Kate that.
In France Dijon has cut the mustard by taking the lead in Toulouse, which is what their opponents are on track to do.
GOAL! Dier has somehow conjured an equalizer!
And now it's all kicked off between the Arsenal subs and the celebrating Spurs players.
GOAL !!!! DIRE STRAITS FOR THE GUNNERS AS JAY LENO WAS BERND. NOW THE SUBS ARE FIGHTING. MO P[O TRYING TO BREAK UP THE FIGHT.
Really poor from jay Leno there. I don't know why keepers aren't able to catch balls anymore. They're always trying to parry it.
Now it's a penalty to Spurs! It's all turned around!
Dier with the slightest of contact on the header as Leno was beaten at the near post. It all started because Dier with his celebration in front of the Gunners fans and booked for that
PENALTY SPUDS AS THE GUNNERS ARE NOT LOOKING LIKE HOLDING ON TO THE LEAD.
It's Son whose done the damage again. Holding caught Son as he was dragging the ball back.
Kane dispatches the penalty into the corner and Spurs lead 1-2.
What a match we have here now!
Will Harry Kane be Abel to score?
GOAL!!!! YES HE IS AS IT'S TWO GOALS IN A MINUTE AS JAY LENO WAS SENT THE WRONG WAY
It was minimal contact by Holding on Number One Son, but technically a foul.
The Gunners are guilty of not holding on to the lead and some Dier goalkeeping as Jay Leno was Bernd for a goal. Sound about right?
Mustafi booked for a high challenge on Number One Son, who is not in Gooners books
I MISSED EVERYTHING!!!!
I was hanging something up for Kathy....geez
Luton takes the lead at Bury as do Grimsby at Chesterfield.and the Shrews vs Scunny.
Bristol City take the lead vs Millwall
Luton take the lead at Bury
Bristol City take the lead vs the Evil Lions . Bob will be pleased. Neither sentence is idle gossip.
I wrote a summary at 9:42 in case that helps.
Spurs are enjoying themselves, playing little triangles around a sea of fuming Arsenal shirts. Temperatures are simmering.
The pythons said that Socratis would be better off playing for the philosophers than the Gunners
These two first met at Tottenham marshes in 1887. Spuds were leading 1-2 then the match abandoned due to lack of daylight with fifteen minutes remaining. Talk about brilliant planning
Abum almost in again... saved... offside anyway
Aubama seemed to be in there but he was caught offside. Still didn't score - keeper saved the effort.
I'm going to rewind it at half time
Aubama through with just Lloris to beat, but his shot was kick saved and he was flagged offside.
Actually - as I remember the Philosopher Song, the Pythons described Sokratis as "a lovely little thinker but a bugger when he's pissed."
That's a great idea. it was an action packed few minutes,.
A triplet of stoppage time minutes.
An accurate description from The Pythons.
Oh - Aubama was in again but his first touch was poor.
A Miss Control by Aubama off a pass from Miki as Vertonghen clears for a corner.
Nearly at the interval now in what has been a particularly absorbing first half of action.
United don't play like this
Can't believe Jose's starting line up.... AGAINST SOUTHAMPTON!
Five at the back?
Two.. possibly three... defensive middies
Why is he still safe?
I don't care United are in 7th or 8th... I care that they are boring!
Ab acrobatic save by Lloris off a header from Mustafi from a Gunners corner.
The Spuds lead 1-2 at the half at the EM thanks to two goals in a couple of minutes.
Jose saying United lack "mad dogs" in the midfield.... of course...you're the one the picks the team!
Lingard is playing great for England... what do you play him like!
You bought Baiily, McTom and Matic are picked before him
Isn't it crazy what's happening in the Cop Lib
Second leg supposed to be in Madrid now but River refuse to play.... give the trophy to Boca! It is all River's fault anyway
What do you think about Berhalter taking over as USMNT boss?
Slough fall behind to Gilliingham
Millwall tie it up at Aston Gate
Off again at the Em
Second half underway as Ramsey on for Miki and while reading Lacazette noticed that Iwobi was substituted as well. The Enery Board was bored with e Gunner's first half performance.
Arsenal made changes
The Gazette and Ramsey on from the start of the second half
Miki and Iwobi off
Again, Arsenal still haven't had the lead at half time all season
They are a second half side!
Pompey still scoreless at Rochdale and struggling
