US v. Guyana Gold Cup Action
The US Men's footer team begin their Gold Cup campaign tonight. Greg Berhalter's side has been in rotten form, losing a couple in the run-up to this tournament, but surely a home match to Guyana can't pose too many problems, can it? Time to stop the rot!
The match starts at 10pm and it's on FS1. I'll be around for at least the first half of tonight's match, so if you're watching, drop by for a natter, eh?

Good evening, Bob. Thanks for the post. I will be around , but may be a few minutes late if I have to pick up Melanie from rehearsal for a gig.
Evening, MUR - how are you, mate? It'll be great to have you around tonight.
Doing well, thank you for asking. How are you? It will be great to enjoy the pleasure of your company.
I'm back at work after two weeks off this week, but enjoying it. The schedule slows down a bit during the summer months.
I'm leaving to pick up Melanie. Will be back in a few minutes.
Teams in the tunnel now. Come on!
Cheerio, David!
The stadium in St. Paul looks brilliant.
Kickoff time - come on, lads!
The US women have set the standards here - let's have 13 or so.
Early free kick chance for the Guyanans
Oh - first chance for Tyler Boyd to stretch his legs. Nice abel over but Nick Lima can't connect.
Gooner favorite Paul Arriola attacking down the left now. Sets up Pulisic but the keeper does well.
Arriola nearly plays Boyd in but earns a corner.
Great run by Pulisic there, gliding past three defenders but couldn't find Zardes in the middle.
The US Women already had three at this point against Thailand. Poor show so far.
Oh - great move through Lima down the right. The cross finally falls to Boyd who pulls his shot wide.
What I notice right away is that Pulisic and Ream excepted, this is mostly an MLS based side. And not a young side. Zimmerman is 26, Zardes is 27, Boyd is 28.
Where's the new generation?
Back for the remainder of the match with the beverage of choice. Doesn't look like I missed much
Great close range save by the Guyana keeper from Pulisic
GOAL !!! A GOAL IS FINALLY SCORED AND IT'S BY ARRIOLA
GOAL! Paul Arriola knocks home the opening goal!
Oh - nearly a second in a minute. Pulisic and Zardes should have scored.
A slow methodical build up that culminated in a nice pass from Weston McKinnie to Arriola for the finish
Welcome back, mate - you brought us a goal!
Nice pass to Zardes , who laid it off for Tyler Boyd and he snatched it wide
Cheers, Bob. Glad to be back and glad to help
Nice run by Liam Gordon of Daggenham, but Keanu Marsh-Brown, of Newport County hesitated and it was cleared.
Based on the lineup I just read It seems like primarily English born players that play in L1 , L2 ,and the National League for Guyana. Surely, the U.S. should handily defeat this side.
California born Beresford, down injured for Guyana. He plays for Peachtree City, in the fourth tier of the U.S. footie pyramid. A last minute replacement for an injured Philadelhia Union player
Sorry guys. I should have known you were here. DCUnited hero Arriola with our goal.
Bob just texted that he doesn't see progress with youth coming through tonight. I dunno. Some progress with McKennie and Lima who I'm beginning might have a place. But seeing Bradley burned for pace twice tonight makes me think we're desperate there. And Tim Ream continues to be a walking indictment of Fulham's issues.
Westom Mckinnie lectured for fouling veterean , Neill Danns, who at age 36 plays for Bury
Welcome, Gooner!
Good evening, Steve. Great to enjoy the pleasure of your company.
Agreed - Bradley, Ream and Gonzalez, all the wrong side of 30 now should be put out to pasture before the WC qualifying campaign starts.
You must be delighted to see one of the D.c. players score. Nice finish
Berhalter is missing some of the Bundesliga based guys tonight. They should be in this squad but he squandered a lot of time by faffing around with Roldan, Mihailovic, and other MLS guys so he's not yet integrated any of them into his side yet.
There may be a few young players, but not enough and primarily MLS based.
Here's one for you, Statto David. The commentators were saying earlier that Guyana manager Michael Johnson played his entire career in England. Ever heard of him? If so, where did he play?
Not impressed with the start Berhalter has made in charge of the USMNT. Expected better from him
I think I have . I think he played for Championship sides. I will check.
Oh - sharp shot from Lima. Well blocked by Clarke.
Great save by the Guyana keeper from Pulisic then Tyler Boyd shoots the rebound in Row T
A pair of stoppage time minutes
Michael Johnson is 45 years old, born in Nottingham. Played for Notts County, Brum, Derby County, and had a brief loan spell with Not a Big Club,. Was capped 13 times by Jamaica.
Of the subs, Lewis has had really good moments off the bench for Sarachan. Lewis might be fighting back from an injury so it may explain it. The options in attack mwN that we're dependent on Zardes for now and Pulisic putting it on a platter repeadedly. Off the bench it's Altitore and Morris, neither very exciting. So we have to hope that Arriola and Pulisic and maybe Boyd can work with Zardes.
Oh - Pulisic should have buried that one.
The U.S. One up at the half and far from impressive.
I wish I could edit the game film for Coach B. It would consist almost entirely of balls coming into Zardes which don't end up in the net.
Half-time. I'm going to ring off now gents and watch some stuff with Kate. Thanks for joining in tonight. Cheerio!
Cheerio BDB
Cheers, Bob. Great chatting with you.
The second half is underway
GOAL !!!TYLER BOYD PUTS THE U.S. TWO UP WITH A NICE FINISH OFF A NICE LONG BALL FROM MICHAEL BRADLEY. HIS FIRST GOAL FOR THE U.S.
Good finish from Boyd.
I don't like it when Zardes comes all the way back to help out. Surely he can keep forward and leave it to the other 10. That hoof by Bradley would have been tempting to run onto if he hadn't been dwelling in the hope of the box.
And to prove my point it just caromned into the net off his face. 3-0
Ohhh, Arriola arriving late into the box heads just wide to miss his brace and the US 4th.
GOAL !!!! THE U.S. GOES THREE UP WITH A FLUKE OF A GOAL BY ZARDES. A SHOT FROM ARRIOLA WAS HEADED BY A GUYANA PLAYER OFF OF ZARDES'S FACE AND INTO THE GOAL
Great chance for Arriola off a nice cross from Boyd.
Arriola is an utter nuisance to the Guyanans
Landycakes said he was disappointed that our midfield is not dominating these mugs.
Arrgh, here come Roldan. I don't see the point of him. Trapp is on too.
Will Trapp on for Michael Bradley and Roldan on for Pulisic as Berhalter makes a double substitution.
I did think we would be more dominant against Guyana . The U.S. has improved as the match has wore on.
Where is Kelvin Acosta? I can't bear that his absence is giving Roldan minutes. There's another bloke too that should be here keeping Roldan out of the squad.
Yeah, in a competitive match, we should be mullering this lot. 3-0, with one of them a poorly executed face-trap is simply not good enough again.
I need UWS to remind me that we are not good and that my expectations are ridiculous. As Zardes again fails to trap the ball. FAILS TO TRAP A BALL, Berhalter. C'mon!
Nice save by Zack Steffan off a long range effort from Keanu Marsh-Brown
No outlet when we defend the corner again. Roldan just runs to the sideline and has to belt it away.
I'm sure UWS would be m ore than happy to remind you.
C'mon! Challenge that keeper. He's wearing tights. In June. FFS, USA.
Will Berhalter last if the U.S. put in continuously poor performances?
Poor pass cleared and Roldan blasts well over when he should have scored.
Anthony Jeffrey of Dover Athletic on for Keanu Marsh-Brown of Newport County
How does Roldan convince someone to give him a pay-check. Does he do carpentry on the side. Does Berhalter need some nice built-ins?
Weston McKinnie down for the U.S. This would be a massive loss based on the squad picked for this tournament.
Mihalovic on for McKinnie.
Roldan is more the Plumbers assistant
Clarke in the Guyana goal, down holding his arm. Got a slight kick to the arm by Boyd off a through ball.
McKennie's done his hammy. That's him back to Shalke's sick-bay.
That was weird. The coach was already in the tunnel to give McKennie an attaboy. Was he returning from the gents?
MUR, tell this ref I have to go to work in the morning. Let's get the keeper up or subbed off, now.
GOAL !!! BOYD WITH HIS SECOND OF THE NIGHT PUTS THE U.S. FOUR UP.
Look at the coach go after that water. He'll need another slash before the final whistle at this rate.
OOOH. What a hit from Boyd. Keeper, no chance
Nice long ball found Arriola down the left. He cut it back for Tyler BVoyd, who scored with a nice curling effort from the D
Looks as if the match might finish just a tad before midnight your time.
Arriola cuts in and shoots just wide from a narrow angle.
Holder on for Neil Danns.
If Zardes was an animal, he'd be a big dopey dog that won't give the ball ball after fetching it, so you have to throw another one to make him drop it.
TYLER ADAMS. That's the guy I was thinking of. Why isn't he in the squad. He and Trapp as defensive midfielders with Adams tasked with linking from the mid to the front.
OH!!! That should have been a hat-trick for Boyd. Zardes had too heavy a touch as he rounded the keeper, but laid it off for Boyd, who had a wide open goal.
I'm off. If Boyd can't score his hat-trick, it's not for lack of opportunity. Cheerio MUR.
A trio of stoppage time minutes.
Cheers, Steve. Great chatting with you.
The U.S. have defeated Guyana 4-0, but were far from convincing.
That's it for me.
CHEERS!
Thanks for keeping the home fires burning, chaps. 4-0 is a decent result to open the Gold Cup but I'm unconvinced by this side.
