US v. T&T Live!
I'm settling in to watch tonight's Gold Cup action between the US and Trinidad and the Tobagoners. In their Gold Cup opener on Tuesday night, Greg Berhalter's side got off to a winning start with a 4-0 drubbing of Guyana. There is an edge to this match, given that the 1-0 loss to T&T knocked the US out of the last World Cup. Let's hope there is a bit of redemption tonight.
Join me on the LOB if you're around tonight.

The starting line-up for the US:
Steffen, Lima, Zimmerman, Long, Ream, Bradley, Boyd, Pulisic, McKennie, Arriola, Zardes
Teams coming out of the tunnel now.
Good evening, Bob. Just got back from walkies with Sparky. Ready for some Saturday Night Live Football?
Evening, MUR - I am pumped for some SNL footie. Glad to have you on board. How hot is it your way?
Earlier today , Panama defeated Guyana 4-2 . A U.S. win eliminated Trinidad. Guyana were eliminated with that loss to Panama
Thanks, Bob. It is hot , humid, but breezy today. How is it in WNY?
The U.S. should be overwhelming favorites. The majority of the T&T players play in the U.S. in MLS, or even lower down the pyramid in USL.
They're off from Cleveland .
And we're away. John Strong and Stu Holden doing the commentary duties tonight.
Time for a cold brew.
Yeah - I expect a comfortable US win, which will put them into the quarter finals next weekend and render the last group match with Panama moot.
Indeed it is!
First half chance there for Tyler Boyd, who had a brace on Tuesday.
England face Cameroon in the women's WC tomorrow morning . Kickoff is 11:30 AM your time.
What are you drinking tonight, mate?
Agreed. He's been a great addition to the team . Glad he chose the U.S. instead of the Kiwis.
Currently drinking a bottle of Rolling Rock. How about you?
YIKES! Trinidad scoreless in their last half a dozen matches. They're not the team they used to be.
Nice one. I'm enjoying a Mow Master, a pale ale that our local brewery EBC does here. It's lovely.
Free kick from ALvin Jones not over by much after Kevin George won a free kick off a foul from Zardes.
Well in, mate. Far superior to the one I'm drinking.
End to end action now.
OH! Zack Steffen forced to push away a powerful shot in a Trinidad counter, which lead to a U.S. counter. Nice shot from Kaleem Hyland
Rolling Rock was my college beer.
Hyland was injured while taking that shot and off for treatment.
A pretty good choice for a college beer for sure. Can't go wrong with that.
A bit of magic spray on the butt there.
Oh - just past the bar there for the US boys. Close call.
OH!! Nice one touch passing by the U.S. in the Trinidad box. The last pass came off of Arriola, who didn't know too much about it.
Oh - nice ball in from Pulisic but Zardes was napping.
The US moving the ball about nicely now.
Long range effort straight at Trinidad keeper, Marvin Phillip. Now Trinidad has a player down.
It's Hyland, who forced a save from Steffen earlier.
He's replaced by Kevin Molino, which I believe is like for like.
T&T are definitely trying to absorb the US pressure and to hit on the break.
They will also try to take advantage of any set piece opportunities.
T&T with a rare free kick chance now.
Cleared out for a throw.
Boyd couldn't quite bring that long ball from Zimmerman down under control.
Weston McKinnie will need to calm down as he nearly talks himself into the book.
He's an interesting player, one of the younger ones on this side. Playing in Germany for Schalke.
Cordell Cato fouls Tyler Boyd off a T& T throw.
Pulisic with a free kick that doesn't beat the first man. Poor.
Poor free kick easily headed away
I thought Weston was going into the book there but the ref was lenient.
It seems that the ref is being Conned by the T& T players, who are pretending to be injured for every little challenge.
Cross headed down by Zardes , but Marvin Phillip gathers at the feet of Arriola.
Agreed, mate - some disgraceful playacting going on.
The U.S win the ball of the high press and a long range shot from Pulisic is blocked for a corner.
Zardes has trouble controlling a long corner and it's cleared away
For all of the US pressure, they haven't created that many clear cut chances.
Jones picks up a yellow card for hacking down Pulisic.
Now a free kick in the dangerous area.
Alvin Jones booked for nasty foul on Pulisic just outside the T&T box.
Pulisic straight into he wall.
GOAL 1!! AARON LONG FINALLY GIVES THE U.S. THE LEAD.
GOAL! Central defender Long nods home the opener. We needed that one.
Off the blocked free kick, the ball was played back to Pulisic a couple of passes later and his superb cross was well headed in by Aaron Long.
We sure did. I was wondering if we were ever going to break down T&T
Do you know who the US would get in the quarterfinals?
As things stand, both the U.S. and Panama will have already qualified for the quarters by the time the two teams meet later this week.
Lima wins another corner after a storming run.
Lima wins a corner off of Cato.
Not sure, but I can check.
An LOB blogging duo of stoppage time minutes.
Just as well - I don't want the US to have to do anything about Panama on Wednesday.
The U.S. one up at the half thanks to the headed goal by Aaron Long a few minutes ago.
The U.S. would play Jamaica, El Salvador, Or Curacao, depending upon their placement in Group D and results in Group C
Just got back in in time to see Long connecting with Pulisic . Evening all.
Thanks for keeping the blog fires burning chaps. Melanie and I just got back from Riverfest here in Alex. Food, beer-tents and a not bad at all Ska Band in the bandstand. Now, I'm here for the second half with my Southern Tier 8 Days A Week in my Luke Cage Power Man pint glass. And here we go.
Evening, mate - great to have you on board. Second half starting up.
David, other than a trophy is there any other significance in doing well in this tournament?
Back for the second half. About a minute into the second half.
Sounds like you had a great day out.
Good evening , Steve. Great to have you on board. Sounds like a great Riverfest.
Other than winning the trophy there is also a chance at a place in the Confeds Cup. That's about it.
I don't think that there is any specific significance to the Gold Cup, but it's always struck me as a legit equivalent to the Copa America, European Championships, African Cup of Nations and so on. Just weaker because CONCACAF is weaker.
An early second goal would wrap this one up nicely.
That's an accurate description , Bob. It's CONCACAF's equivalent of the Euros, but a much lower standard.
Boyd is an intriguing player but I'm unconvinced. He's playing in Turkey for a club I've never heard of on loan from a Portuguese club I've never heard of. Not sure.
This performance against T&T has not exactly been dynamite!
Arriola produces a full stretch save from Phillips.
Nice through ball for Arriola, but shoots wide with just Marvin Phillip to beat.
Is the Southern Tier 8 Days a Week an IPA, Gooner?
I think Boyd is a great addition. I think the Portugese club is in their Premier League.
Jones gives up a cheap corner and the US have another chance to bring the big boys up.
I'm sure it is, but beyond Benfica, Porto and Sporting, I've probably never heard of any of the sides.
OH!!! Volley from Arriola is over.
That's a fair cop, mate/
Oh - Boyd curls one just wide of the left post. That would have been a lovely goal.
A long range effort from Tyler Boys is inches wide.
The Trinis have very little to offer with this side. We really should be beating this lot 3 or 4-0.
Sounds like Steve is set in terms of ales.
Agreed. They're not much better than Guyana.
Handbags now between the sides - not sure how that started but the ref will have to sort it out.
Hand bags between Alvin Jones and Zardes as well as between Marvin Phillip and Weston McKinnie.
Weston finally gets that yellow that he's been begging for all match. He needs to lose that edge with maturity.
Bob, the 8 Days is a golden ale. But i bought it because it's priced as a sixer, but you get 8. I'm buying cans when possible becuase Alex discontinued glass pick up recycling. 8 for 6 is my kinda price.
Weston puts his nose where it didn't belong and picks up a yellow. Their keeper should have got one too.
Weston McKinnie and Cyrus. booked. Cyrus acting much like Miley
Boyd tries another one, this time to the near post. Saved. I do like his directness.
Marvin Phillip turns around a shot from Tyler Boyd.
I'll have to look out for it. Thanks for the tip!
Phew - Garcia was in there but shanked his effort. What a let off!
The header from Zardes is misdirected off the corner then Kevin Garcia misses a sitter on a T&T counter. Shot well over with just Steffen to beat.
Boyd's night is done. Jordan Morris on for him now.
And he very quickly earns the US a corner. I'd like to see this one go in.
Jordan Morris on for Tyler Boyd. Morris immediately wins a corner.
The center backs are a very unsettled issue. I'm unconvinced by Long, and I think we have to put up with some naivity from Zimmerman before we get happier with him. Lima looks good, but Ream wouldn't even render down to a quality glue. I've seen enough
Agreed - of the four, Lima is the only one who has impressed. Surely there are a couple of young guys plying their trade in the Bundesliga who have an American grannie, no?
Zardes so misdirected it seems like he's riding the Tardis.
Good save by Steffen from Molino's drive. T&T creeping into this one a bit worryingly.
Nice save by Zack Steffen from Kevin Molino
Nice U.S. counter, but nobody could connect on a pass in the box, then Marvin Phillip makes a nice close range save,. Nice block from Arriola off a nice cross from Pulisic.
Brooks is still an option and I really thought Berhalter would play him because his esperience might ease Zimmerman into playing form.
GOAL !! ZARDES PUTS THE U.S. TWO UP WITH AN EASY TAP IN./
GOAL! Zardes finally taps home the US second after some relentless pressure.
Good gpal. Give Zardes his due, he stayed in the box onside, and was there to finish. 2-0
Lovely ball out from Bradley for the Lima overlap. Controlled header to Zardes and the striker could hardly miss from that range.
Nice cross into the box from Bradley was headed across the box by Nick Lima and easily tapped in from two yards out by Zardes.
Zimmerman has some potential. I want Gonzalez and Ream put out to pasture before the WC campaign begins.
Jovin Jones on for Nathan Lewis. Long range swerving free kick pushed away by Steffen
Wahay! 3-0 as Zardes gets his brace. Pulisic made it.
GOAL !!! ZARDES PUTS THE U.S. THREE UP WITH HIS SECOND OF THE MATCH, A CURLER IN THE UPPER 90.
What has got into Zardes tonight. I've never seen him as composed. That's a great finish for his second.
Nice run by Pulisic and nice through ball for Zardes for that nice finish. Pulisic with his second assist of the match./
Oh - Zardes should have had his hat-trick there. Off the Sunday Roast on the first attempt. The keeper saves the second and then he puts a third bite at the cherry over the top.
Three bites at the apple for his hat-trick, Zardes spurns them all.
OH!!! Three chances for Zardes to score. Fist , hit the post off a pass from Arriola, then produced a nice save from Marvin Phillip, then shot well over from close range.,
Agreed, Gooner - I was just about to bellyache about Zardes and now he's on a hat-trick.
Nice to see these mugs being put in their place.
Pulisic rolls in number four and the T&T boys are unraveling.
GOAL !!!PULISIC WITH A GOAL TO GO ALONG WITH TWO ASSISTS AS THE U.S. GO FOUR UP.
T&T are alll over the place and Pulisic calmly slots away one for himself.
Yeah - I had invited our Trinidadian friend Shazad over to watch this one but he was unavailable. I'm kind of glad now. Not pretty.
A late cameo for Jozy Altidore now.
Jordan Morris received the ball off some sloppy T&T defending went on a run and found Pulsic for an easy close range finish
These mugs need a real thrashing after their awful conduct this match
Ream got roasted again. I have no idea who Reggie Cannon is but he's a defender in the squad. Get him in.
Agreed, this would not have been good viewing for Shazad.
This result will be a tonic. If they can beat Panama on Wednesday night, they might actually roll into the quarters with some positive momentum.
Lester Peltier on for Kevin Garcia.
Morris has certainly made an impact off the bench. He's a good squad player.
Surely we've got better options than Jozy at this point.
5-0! Arriola!
GOAL !!! ARRIOLA PUTS THE U.S. FIVE UP.
Headless chicken from DC scores. Thrashing ahoy!
With all of these goals rolling in, Jack White is definitely getting paid tonight.
Jordan Morris with his second assist off the bench as he passed for an easy finish for Arriola.
That's two in two matches for Arriola. I can imagine him being frustrating in DC United colors, but he looks lively in that position to me.
We want 13! We want 13! We want 13!
LOL! That would be something. If only we got a shot at the Thai men's team.
The next goal would be half a dozen, but a baker's dozen is definitely better!
The nice thing is that T&T keep pushing for a consolation goal rather than trying to keep the score down. Very sporting of them.
He can't tackle. Arriola picks up yellows because Ben puts him in the middle and he leaves his feet time and time again in the tackle.
If the U.S. wins the group then they will probably face El Salvador in the quarters
Kevin Molino wins a T&T free kick
I always hate matches against El Salvador - their really dirty.
The free kick nearly clears the stadium
Reggie Cannon on for Nick Lima. Just as Bob and Steve oredered,
Not for Lima. Cannon for Ream dammit!
Oh - off the bar from Arriola!
Agreed, Bob. The best way to punish them is to run up the score.
OH!!! A shot from Arriola crashes off the bar
Jovin Jones booked for an elbow on Pulisic . Should have been sent off.
Jones ia a bad lad. That was just petulant on Pulisic. Should have been a red.
I'm going to call it an evening, folks. Popcorn and a movie coming up for us. Cheerio!
The LOB hanging judges have rendered the verdict. Send him away mi'lud
Pulisic show boats in response to the elbow. a great way to react
Cheers, Bob. Great chatting with you.
Enjoy. I'll call sometime over the rest of the weekend.
Blimey - 6-0 as I'm tuning out. Long with a brace.
Cheerio, boys - nice chatting with you.
GOAL !!! THE U.S. GOES HAVE A DOZEN UP AS AARON LONG HEADS INA REBOUND OFF A SAVE FROM MARVIN PHILLIP. HIS SECOND OF THE NIGHT/
No stoppage time as the ref shows T&T mercy as the U.S> thrash T&T 6-0.
Right. Cheerio David. It's been fun.
Cheers everyone. Great chatting.
