Back to the Prem!
Morning, chaps! Well, it seems like ages since we had a Premiership Saturday morning, given that interminable international break. We're back at it this morning, starting with the league leaders Liverpool taking on relegation threatened Newcastle. That's followed by the 10 o'clock kickoffs, including Spurs v. Palace on NBC Sports and Man Yoo v. Leicester on the Gold package. Finally, it's Norwich v. Citeh, an intriguing match-up to wrap up the day's activities.
Join me for the usual Saturday morning action.

Morning, chaps! This is one of the signature Premier League fixtures, its status the result of that game 23 years ago. A classic’s a classic’s a classic. That 4-3 Liverpool win courtesy of Stan Collymore, which sent Kevin Keegan slumping over the advertising hoarding, is burned into the psyche when one thinks about this match. I'd take another seven-goal classic today.
Good morning, Bob. Up to join you for the Prem matches. How was your week?
The teams lining up in the famous tunnel at Anfield now:
Liverpool: Adrian, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, van Dijk, Robertson, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Fabinho, Wijnaldum, Salah, Mane, Origi.
Subs: Milner, Firmino, Gomez, Henderson, Lallana, Shaqiri, Kelleher.
Newcastle United: Dubravka, Krafth, Schar, Lascelles, Dummett, Willems, Atsu, Hayden, Shelvey, Almiron, Joelinton.
Subs: Clark, Ki, Muto, Fernandez, Manquillo, Darlow, Matthew Longstaff.
Referee: Andre Marriner (West Midlands).
Morning, MUR - I had a blissfully peaceful week, thanks. How about you?
This fixture produced quite a few goals during the early Prem era. There were two 4-3 matches and on New Year's Day around 2000, Toon were two up at Anfield , had a player sent off, and Pool came back to win 4-2.
It was a typically peaceful week. Thank you for asking.
Nice one, mate. Well, we're set to go here at Anfield. Hoping for another one of those goal-fest.
The Dean of officials gets Pool vs Toon underway from a sunny Anfield.
I am starting a new Wednesday afternoon tradition, unless there is a footie match. Wednesday is $1.50 day at the theater that shows the old movies and I saw " Yesterday " on Wednesday afternoon.
Looks like a pretty fall day on Merseyside. Glorious lunchtime sunshine.
Agreed. Looks perfect for a picnic.
Marvelous! That's a great tradition, mate. I haven't seen "Yesterday" yet. How was it?
We saw "The Goldfinch" last night - loved it as much as the book.
It was a great movie and has a special meaning as the majority of the movie takes place in a small village just outside Lowestoft. My parents probably went antique shopping there. Sound like on e of your old haunts. Think it was Gorleston.
GOAL! Well, that wasn't in the script. Toon take the lead!
GOAL !!! JETHRO WILLEMS GIVES THE TOON A SURPRISE LEAD WITH A ROCKET IN THE UPPER 90.
What a strike from Willems! Right in the top corner!
0-1 Newcastle!
Long ball out of the back found Christian Atsu . He passed to Willems , who cut inside Three Names and shot in the upper 90 from the edge of the box on the first Toon attack of the match
Did you see my comment about "Yesterday?"
The Ox drags a long range shot well wide.
The MOTD in the Championship currently being played at Bob and Kate's . Where our favorite Slav's Baggies are being shown the typically great hospitality
So, how will the league leaders respond to that set-back. They haven't really been clicking so far, if truth be told.
HI Boys
The goal was scored during my commute from upstairs to downstairs!
So glad it's the weekend
Not that bad of a first full week of work tho
I loved Yesterday
A miss hit cross from the Ox ends up being a shot that goes inches over.
I did - not sure I've ever been to Lowestoft, or Gorleston Lowestoft sounds familiar - is it a seaside East Anglian tonk? But I'm not sure I've been. Looking forward to seeing it.
Good Morning, Dave. Glad you got your last first full week of school under your belt.
Morning, UWS! That's a new version of the Nocito Curse! Welcome!
Yes, Bob. It is a seaside resort town. I think both of you would agree that those our our old haunts.
I guess I've been out of the loop. Last weekend, Javi Gracia won the sack race. Was he ever given a vote of confidence? Did anyone pick him for either category?
The only seaside haunt I remember as a kid was Great Yarmouth, which we went to fairly regularly. How about you, UWS? Do you remember Lowestoft?
My mistake on Yesterday. It took place just outside Great Yarmouth, not Lowestoft, but have been to both.
It was a sudden thing, with Gracia given his marching orders after Watford's poor start to the season. No one picked him for the sack race, sadly, so that category is still live with one point on the line.
We used to go to Caster(sandy beach) and Great Yarmouth but did go to Lowestoft as well but don't remember it much
Lovely town, although like most English seaside towns, not much for sunbathing or swimming in the ocean. The North Sea is too bitter cold all year round. The dogs loved going in, though.
Also, when Toon won at Spurs, Brucie and Mo Po were in an argument/ heated debate over the Toon's tackling. Does that count as the first touchline fight?
I thought Joelinton was on-side there with TAA playing him on. Bit of argybargy with Adrian during that incident.
When my parents went antique shopping we would sneak off to the beach and found it more suited to rock collecting. As for the water, we stepped in it only once!
I thought the same... way on the other side of the pitch
I thought they were supposed to let it go and have VAR check it
Yeah - I didn't see that one. I'll have to review the video evidence. Sounds like it counts. I'll have to see if anyone picked Brucie and MoPo.
Origi heads a cross from Mane wide after Lascelles glanced a way a cross from TAA
So, United are on Gold today! I think it is surprising. Leicester is good match up!
Hudders/Wed on Plus tomorrow and not Barnsley/Leeds
Nice move - Liverpool finally going through the gears now some half way through the first half. Wins a corner.
Celtic one up at the half at George Hamilton's house.
Salah wins another corner with a deflected shot.
Big penalty shout there - VAR check?
I noticed those matches on Plus. Thought United vs Foxes would be a better choice than Spurs vs Palace and that the Leeds match would be a better choice
No penalty after the check - it looked bad to me.
Is a penalty going to be called?
When can it be checked?
No pen
I thought all the hugging will stop with VAR... apparently not
Agreed. Lascelles rugby tackled Matip. How was that not a penalty. How did it not get called ? What's the point of VAR?
GOAL !!!!MANE OH MANE! WHAT A CRACKER TO TIE IT UP
Mane strikes and we're level! Great strike!
Identical finish to that goal scored by Willems.
Who needs VAR? Having been denied a penalty , Liverpool scored on the ensuing possession A twenty pass move culminated in a pass to Robertson, who passed back to Mane for that great finish
Did UWS miss a goal while in the bog?
AN interesting piece of trivia from the announcer. Toon last won away to the team at the top of the table in 1972, which was Clough's Rams. History isn't with Brucie's lads today.
Incidentally, that was Sadio Mane’s 17th league goal of 2019. Only Sergio Aguero, with 18, has scored more in this calendar year.
Real three up vs Levante at the start of the second half.
The Nocito Curse is really on show today
The Loo Curese for goal number two
Mane OH Mane! What a great year!
I have a feeling that the Nocito Curse struck again!
WOW! You sure are cursed today!
LOL! Nice one, UWS!
Still 0-0 at Bob and Kate's
Origi has been down for close to a couple of minutes getting treatment. Bobby F the natural replacement.
Origi has a problem now and is going to have to come off. Replaced by Bobby Chompers.
Now that change is being made.
Liverpool with a forced change...not a bad bloke to come on
I think Klopp wanted to rest him after the marathon flight back and the big match in Naples on Tuesday.
2-1!
How did that not get gobbled up by the keeper?
2-1 Reds! Mane again, profiting from a bit of a clanger from the Newcastle keeper.
Pfhaffing about with it in the midfield
GOAL !!!MANE OH MANE ! HE SCORES HIS AND POOL'S SECOND TO COME FROM BEHIND TO LEAD 2-1.
Now then, Jurgen is a happy chappy again. That's four goals now for Mane in the Prem, level with Tammy Abraham but still two goals behind Aguero on top of the pops.
Talk about a great substitution. Bobby F involved minutes after coming on. He tackled Christian Atsu in midfield. I thought his through ball was over hit and should have been gathered by Dubravka, but Mane nipped in first and easily scored.
Also one behind Pukki.
Levante score at the Bernabeu, but trail Real 3-1.
Almiron offside off a long through ball.
Almiron scored his first goal for Paraguay when he scored against Jordan in midweek. Wonder what Michael must be thinking
I think I found out that I can watch Gold on Apple TV so I will have United on the TV
I will have Soccer Saturday on the computer along with LOB of course
AN LOB blogging trio of stoppage time minutes
Brother Steve was very helpful getting things sorted for Tom and Matt!
Thanks again for Gold for Goldstein. Will be watching Soccer Saturday
Free kick to the Toon and it comes to nothing.
Pool have come from behind and lead 2-1 at the half.
The first half comes to an end - very entertaining affair. Hoping for more of the same in the second half.
Half time
Ashes Update
The Ashes were lost at Old Trafford last week after England came so close to batting out for a draw
The Aussies have a 2-1 lead with the only the Oval(Joel Mow the Lawn) left. They retain it because they can't lose the series
Day 3 of the 5th Test
England are 88 for 2 in their second innings and have a lead of 157 runs with 8 wickets remaining
Back to Anfield... come on you Toon
We are off
No goals in the first half at Bob and Kate's vs the Baggies
Back for the second half action with the official brekkies of the LOB - a bagel and a cuppa.
That scoreline at the Cottage suits me just fine. WBA are a threat.
Kate scores a corker off the coffee table for the hosts
What a chance for Newcastle.....USELESS effort!
Oh - Krafth had a real chance there. Should have buried it first time.
Back from walkies to see Dubravka turn a round a near post shot from TAA.
Sonny and Schaar head out a cross from TAA for a Pool corner
Did not miss a goal while Sparky was using the bog.
The commentators aren't even trying to pronouncing Joelinton's name properly. They're just saying "Joe Linton," as if he was born in Slough.
Apparently it's something like "Zho-el-een-ton." Give it a try, boys.
Bob is more in Toon with the pronunciation than the announcer.
Joelmowthelawn?
I have to take Shad after this match... and get back to set up my Apple TV
LOL! That's the one, UWS!
OH!!! Great near post block by Dubravaka from Robertson
You could get one of the boys to set up the Apple TV, no?
Oh - Dubravka does well at the feet of Salah.
Another great near post save from Dubravka off a deflected shot from the Ox,.
Agreed. Nice one, UWS. Wished he could mow my lawn!
I have three Pool players on my fantasy teams
Three First Names, VVD and Ox....If Liverpool are going to win.... get me points!
I am playing Matt this week
I am the only undefeated team in the league
Knew I got it right!
BTW, my snickers bucket is going down!!
Put your shirt on!
Muto is on for Almiron and a return to Anfield for Manquillo as he's on for Krafth , who had a cheesy miss.
Real held on to defeat Levante 3-2 after being three up at thew half.
Oh - Virgil got around the back there but no one was following in for him.
You're two weeks down on the season, right UWS?
GOAL !!! SALAH WALKS THROUGH THE TOON DEFENSE TO GIVE POOL A 3-1 LEAD
GOAL! Salah walks though the Newcastle defense and slots home his fifth of the season.
Salah extends Liverpool's lead
Set up by Firmino... he's Matt's
School year?
Not season!
Salah played a nice one two with Bobby F then went past a couple of Toon defenders to score past the stranded Dubravka.
What a lovely flick from Firmino - I didn't catch that until the replay. Dazzling stuff from the Brazilian.
Same thing, surely, mate.
Bobby F with a pair of assists off the bench. Not a bad contribution at all.
This one is done and dusted.
That's a point for the LUFC Academy factor as Milner is on for the Ox.
United have a lot of injuries for today's match
The line up has just been announced
De Gea
Wan Bissaka
Lindeloff
Maguire
Young
McTom
Matic
Peirra
Mata
James
Rashford
OGS has said that Greenwood was going to play a lot this season.... PLAY HIM!!
Lovely time of the morning for a spot of LUFC Academy action. Milner on for a late cameo.
UWS that much closer to the finish line. Keep going, mate.
Where's Pogpants?
UWS will be interested to note that Pompey have the weekend off for a very sad reason.
United's bench
Gomes, Greenwood, Tuanzebe Chong, Romero Jones and Fred
Is Pogs on the bench being rested after his exertions vs Andorra? Being rested for the match for the team from the land of Borat?
This one is done and dusted
I am off for walkies before the rain comes
Fred on the bench? He's napping in my bedroom. Nice to see Wasabi and Tommy Chong in the squad.
Final roll of the dice from Brucie and it's like for like as Fernandez is on for Schaar, not Sonny.
Have a great walkies.
TAA wins a Pool corner
Header from Mane off the corner well wide.
The Baggies tie it up at Bob and Kate's with our favorite Slav doping a dance in their living room.
The final roll of the dice from Klopp and like for like as Shaquiri is on for Wijnaldum
That means no stoppage time substitutions to irk UWS
Bob will be interested to note that despite surrendering the lad, the Cottagers have yet to make a substitution. Beam us up one, Scotty.
It finished one nil to the Celtic at George Hamilton's house.
Superb close range block by Dubravka from Salah after poor Toon tackling
Mane denied a hat-trick due to the offside flag. Bobby F denied a hat-trick of assists as he was offside off a slide rule pass from Shaquiri.
An LOB blogging trio of stoppage time minutes
Muto offside off a long ball.
After falling behind early, Liverpool finish comfortable 3-1 winners and stay top of the pops.
Pool become only the fourth top flight team to win fourteen consecutive top flight matches and the first to score two or more goals in every one of those fourteen matches.
Next, Spurs vs Palace is on NBCSN with the Tigers vs Wigan on Plus. The one Plus sounds more like a rugby league fixture.
The Reds keep rolling along. Another big win after having gone behind.
I'm off for a shower before the match.
Back to your recent comments
Pogpants didn't play internationals this week because of injury. He is is still injured
Wan-Bis wasn't expected to start either
Lindy is ill too
YIKES! It will be tough against a Foxes team that has made a good start to the season.
It finished 1-1 at Bob and Kate's with Scotty making only two substitutions. One in the 85th minute and one in stoppage time.
Back for the 10 o'clockers now. Teams coming out at Shite Fart Lane Mark 2:
Tottenham Hotspur: Lloris, Aurier, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Rose, Sissoko, Winks, Lamela, Eriksen, Son, Kane. Subs: Wanyama, Dier, Alli, Gazzaniga, Lucas Moura, Ndombele, Davies.
