A Big Tuesday Evening in the Championship
Winter Break, be damned! There is a full slate of Championship matches to enjoy tonight. Let's be honest - it's been a rotten 2020 so far for my beloved Leeds United, who have only won two of the last nine matches, after a remarkable run of seven consecutive wins in November and December. Our buffer with the trailing pack has, thus, evaporated, leaving us in a perilous situation as we go into tonight's big match with Brentford. Another loss would mean Brentford (and likely a couple of other sides leapfrogging us. So, we'll have to pick ourselves up and fight for all three points. Come on, you Leeds boys! #MOT!
156 Comments:
There are only six games on the menu tonight, but a while lot of intrigue. To summarise: Second-placed Leeds have lost four of their last five and tonight travel to fifth-placed Brentford, who have the best defence in the division as well as the second-best attack and have only lost twice in two months. Fourth-placed Nottingham Forest have beaten both Brentford and Leeds in the last fortnight, and tonight host relegation-haunted Charlton, who have also beaten both Brentford and Leeds this season, but have won only six other games, and two in 19 since mid-October (neither of them away).
Good Afternoon, Bob. I'm here to join you.
COME ON LEEDS! MOT!
I will be following the audio on FOTMOB.
The teams for tonight's big clash:
Brentford: Raya, Dalsgaard, Jeanvier, Pinnock, Henry, Jensen, Norgaard, Da Silva, Mbeumo, Watkins, Benrahma. Subs: Valencia, Marcondes, Fosu, Baptiste, Daniels, Luca Racic, Roerslev Rasmussen.
Leeds: Casilla, Ayling, White, Cooper, Dallas, Phillips, Helder Costa, Klich, Hernandez, Harrison, Bamford. Subs: Meslier, Douglas, Alioski, Berardi, Augustin, Shackleton, Stevens.
Referee: Robert Jones.
Afternoon, MUR - how's your week been so far?
Thanks for the reminder about FotMob - I've got that going as well.
I’m sure the decision to televise Swansea v QPR seemed sensible at the time, particularly with Leeds’ game at Nottingham Forest having been broadcast on Saturday, and Brentford’s at Hull a week earlier, but Griffin Park is where it’s going on tonight.
It's a busy afternoon for me, mate. I've got my eye on the early returns from New Hampshire. Fortunately, it's been a quiet work day.
I have the pre-match synopsis on audio. Former Leeds defender, Pontus still out injured for the Bees while certain sections of Leeds fans have criticized Bielsa for "tactical stubbornness."
Thankfully, Pontus Jansson isn't fit to run out against us tonight. He would have been well up for it.
It's a fairly quiet, but good week. Thank you for asking. Hope everything is going well with you.
And we're away at Griffin Park - come on, you Leeds!
The match coverage has started on FotMob but it appears to be behind the live updates on the LUFC site.
We're wearing the all sky blue outfit again tonight.
First strike on goal is a tame one straight at Kiko.
I think the audio is a few minutes behind.
It sounds like it - no probs.
That sky blue kit doesn't seem right for Leeds. They should be wearing yellow or royal blue away from home
They're now discussing how Pontus left because relations with Bielsa soured
Early corner chance for us is cleared out by Brentford. Our record at set pieces continues to suffer.
Bob will be pleased to see Bamford and Jean-Kevin playing together for the first time
The Fake Dons take the lead at Abe Lincoln.
The announcer just mentioned what you stated about set pieces.
Part of that was the bizarre situation in the Villa match around Easter. You may remember that Klich took advantage of a man down to score when Villa wanted him to play it out of bounds. Bielsa made the decision to allow Villa to score an equalizer but Pontus disagreed and made some effort to prevent the goal. In the Amazon Prime doc about the season, Pontus says that he disagreed with the boss and that their relationship never recovered.
Nice picture of you in your Blue Devil costume
Jack Harrison has a chance to shoot at goal. It's deflected and David Raya saves.
Brentford have a free kick some 25 yards from goal.
I remember that decision well. it was one of the most bizarre in the years I have watched football matches.
The free kick is overcooked and Kiko will be able to restart.
Harrison wins another corner for us. Come on - this one needs to fly in!
The Tangerines take the lead vs the Gils
Just a reminder that the other six Championship matches are tomorrow. The match on Plus will be the key one as it will be the East End Boys vs the West End Boys
OH! Leeds nearly took the lead . Hernandez had a shot cleared off the line
No goals in the six Championship matches in the first quarter of an hour.
Cambridge takes thew lead at Scunny
Pablo wins us another corner and we seem to be starting to turn the screw. I'm hopeful.
The Black Cays take the lead vs Rochdale
Kal Phillips' corner is cleared out.
Black Cats now two up vs Rochdale
Richard Burton takes the lead with a pair of Oxford Shoes
Morecambe and Wise takes the lead vs Macclesfield in the battle to avoid the drop from the Football League
Argyle Sweater takes the lead at Salford
Abe Lincoln ties it up vs the Fake Dons
It's a return to Griffin Park for Stu Dallas , who was signed from the bees four and one half years ago
Nice one, MUR - I had forgotten that we'd peeled Stu off Brentford. He's been a good servant for us.
The Bees have done well considering they have sold a fair number of players the past few seasons. Dean Smith left for Villa close to this time last year as well.
Cheers, Bob. Thought you would like that
I'm amazed at how well we've been able to sustain our promotion effort, given the number of players that we've sold. Just this past summer, we flogged Pontus, Bailey Peacock-Farrell, and Kemar Roofe.
Casilla turns around a shot from Olly Watkins.
Bollocks! Kiko has made another howler, allowing the ball to run under his foot. Brentford are 1-0 up.
Forest have also conceded at home to Charlton. That's some consolation but we'll need to pick ourselves up now and get it back.
BUGGER! A REAL HOWLER FROM CASILLA. A BACK PASS FROM MINI COOPER ROLLED UNDER HIS SHOT AND BENHRAMA HAD AN EEASY TAP IN
Sorry, Bob. At least Forest is trailing too.
Pablo has one tipped over the bar for a corner. The corner is then cleared out. More dismal stuff from set pieces.
Brentford have leaped over us into second. Forest have slid to fourth and WBA and Fulham don't play tonight.
Benrahma nearly in again but Ayling blocks out a close range effort.
Patrick wins us a corner. Come on!
Harrison's cross is cleared out.
Leeds win yet another corner.
Decent response from us but I want a goal back before half-time.
YESSSSSSSS!!!!!
Harrison's inswinging cross comes in and it's not cleared by Raya and Coop stabs home!
That's big Liam's first goal of the season, just to underscore how poor we've been on set pieces. He had a free header on Saturday that was just clawed out by the Forest keeper.
The first half starting to wind down now.
Oh - nearly a second there, as Helder dived in at the back post to direct Dallas' cross just over the bar.
Into stoppage time now at Griffin Park.
I'm back from picking up Jacquelyn from class. I listened to the match and was delighted to hear that Mini Cooper drove in the equalizer. Congratulations, Bob
Cheers, mate - I'm delighted by that. We really needed to get one back just for the sake of morale. It's the first goal we've scored in three matches.
Wigan in the lead vs the Teesiders
It's 1-1 at the half at Griffin Park
The half-time whistle goes and I'm reasonably pleased with the 1-1 scoreline. We've been bossing it for the most part, so I'm hoping that we can take full advantage in the second half.
Back for the second half then. Come on you Leeds!
Harrison wins an early free kick near the corner flag.
The second half is underway from Griffin Park.
Kai whips in a cross but overhits it and it flies out for a goal kick.
No changes for either side as yet.
COME ON LEEDS! MOT! SCORE MORE AND OFTEN!
Corner now for Brentford.
You must be wondering how Casilla keeps his place in the starting lineup. Time for Meslier to take over?
The corner is cleared out, fortunately. Come on!
Lots of Leeds fans have been clamoring for Meslier, who was impressive in the 3rd Round FA Cup match at Arsenal. But Marcelo is loyal maybe to a fault. He'll stick with his man.
Donny Trump now two up vs doomed Bolton
Oh - Ayling floated a fantastic ball over but Bamford stuck hie header over. Shame.
Another corner to Brentford now - mark 'em up!
Agreed, mate. I'm wondering if some get complacent knowing they won't be dropped, which may explain the loss of form during the run-in last season
Corner cleared out - come on now!
Only a Barber Shop quartet of first half goals in half a dozen Championship matches.
Not very good value for the punters, eh?
Two of those were at Griffin park on a really breezy night. None on Plus.
Not all, but the match we're listening to is.
Of course not - they're looking like wallies for not showing the match at Griffin Park.
Promotion chasing Posh takes the lead vs Dommed Southend asea.
Agreed, mate. Very poor decision making.,
Oh - Costa plays a lovely ball into Klich and gets it back. The winger hit it at goal but Raya was able to save this time.
Posh now two up vs Southend A Sea
Harrison wins another corner. Let's have another one here!
Listening to this match brings back memories of listening to matches on the radio while at Lakenheath
Cheyenne Dunkley has been sent off for a second yellow for Wigan. They still lead the Teesiders 1-0
Brentford clear out the corner. Agreed, mate. Lots of fond memories of matches on the radio.
Boro have leveled it against Wigan. They're down to ten men there.
The Teesdiers make that extra man pay off as they tie it up at the D.W.
Brentford have made their first substitution - DaSilva is replaced by Emiliano Marcondes.
Cambridge goes two up at Scunny.
Bradfoird City have come from behind to take a 2-1 lead vs doomed Stevenage
A pair of Arygle shoes kick their way to an equalizer at Salford.,
Oh - another chance. Harrison cuts one back to Patrick whose half volley flies over the bar.
In a playoff six pointer in L1 it's 0-0 between Coventry and Pompey
Grimsby have come from behind 2-3 at Colchester
The Teesiders score another against ten man Wigan as they now lead 1-2
Harrison with a deflected effort now.
We seem to be dominating proceedings - we just need to make it count.
Argyle Sweater have come from behind to lead 1-2 at Salford
Aberdeen three up at rock bottom George Hamilton as it's now Academical for George
It's been a match of few chances. Both goals were goalkeeping errors, but Leeds have dominated. They need to put more chances away
Salford now make it Desmond vs Argyle sox.
Richard Burton kicks his way to a 2-1 lead with a pair of Oxford shoes.
Twenty minutes left for us to win this one. Again - a draw wouldn't be a horrible result for us given our recent results but we really deserve a win here given our performance.
Blackburn takes the lead vs the Tigers
Posh now three up vs doomed Southend
Free kick now for Brentford. Mark 'em up!
Agreed, Bob. Leeds deserve to win as they've been the better team
Looks like our new boy Jean-Kevin Augustin is coming on now.
The Orient Express takes a 2-1 lead vs Jayne Mansfield
Desmond just watched ten man Wigan tie it up vs the Teesiders.
Bamford is the one who's made way again tonight after another fallow evening.
Come on Jean-Kev!
Posh go ups by a Barber Shop Quartet vs Southend on Sea. That Barber Shop Quartet singing you're going down!
Agreed. Jean-Kevin should have started
In form Brum takes the lead at Barnsley
Blackburn two up vs the Tigers
Corner now for Leeds - let's knock it home!
Daya punches it away.
Inside the last ten minutes - we need to get Augustin into the action.
Blackburn now three up vs the Tigers
For the second match in a row , Bob will be a reluctant Lions fan as they host the Cottagers tomorrow. That match will be on Plus
Absolutely - go on the Evil Lions! Should be a feisty London Derby, that one.
Sounds like this match is starting to fizzle out. A draw would be a decent result for Leeds
We need to fight on for that winner - come on!
Coming up on stoppage time now - should be plenty of it, given the injuries.
UWS will not be pleased that Coventry has taken the lead vs Pompey.
Agreed. It seems like a fair number of players have been down this half
Double substitution for Brentford now. UWS won't be pleased.
Harrison wins yet another corner now. Come on, boys - this is the one!
Pablo has a go from the corner and it deflects out for another corner. Come on!
A really late Bees substitution that will cause UWS to feel the sting. Actually a pair of substitutions.Thomas Franke must be settling for a draw.,
Brentford clear it out now.
Swansea have drawn 0-0 with QPR.
Into stoppage time.
Only a couple of minutes left of the four stoppage points minutes.
Forest appear to be losing tonight at home - that helps us a lot.
Swans vs QPR finished 0-0 in the match on Plus
Blackburn have defeated the Tigers 3-0
Wigan vs the Teesiders finished Desmond
It finished 1-1 at Griffin Park. I'm sure you will take that a s a decent result.
Full-time: I would have loved for us to have found a winner that our play deserved but in the end it's a 1-1 draw and given our recent results, I can't complain too much.
Now on 56 points from 32 matches. We're still in second but WBA and Fulham have a chance tomorrow to gain the advantage on us. 14 matches to play.
I'm off home now - cheerio!
Cheers, Bob. Enjoy the rest of your day and great chatting with you,
