It's All About the Championship
It's all about the Championship again this weekend, as the majority of fancy pants Premiership players are still in Majorca and Tenerife on their "winter break." Sure there are a couple of top division matches this morning but the real action is in the second division. The action starts in a moment with a top of the table clash between WBA and Forest. Then at 10am, I'll turn my attention toward Elland Road and our key clash against Bristol City.
Join me for all of the Championship action this morning.

Teams coming out at the Hawthorns now on ESPN+.
This should be an interesting encounter. WBA like to play long ball stuff while Forest like to hang back and hit clubs on the break, as they with us last weekend.
West Brom start in first, some six points above my beloved Leeds. Forest are fifth on 54 points. A draw would very much be the best result for us today.
The match has fallen into the typical pattern with WBA knocking the ball long into the box at every occasion and Forest parking the bus. Do we really want to see either of these sides in the Premiership?
Oh - Grabban with a big chance there. Ribeiro did really well to twist and turn the defender inside out and knock an inviting ball over. Grabbing had a free header some eight yards out but put his header wide.
Blow up, ref - I'm liking the look of the Championship table just how it is right now.
Oh - Callum Robinson nearly into a cross there. Cash blocks him out.
Matty Cash has a problem now - he's had to hobble off the pitch for some treatment.
Half way through this first half and everything is going just swimmingly so far from a Leeds perspective.
It's all been rather untidy between these two sides in the opening half hour. Not Premier League quality at all.
Good morning, Bob. I'm watching Saints vs Burnley where it's 1-1. I missed Burnley taking the lead, but saw Danny Ings tie it up with a cracking finish against his old mates
I don't blame you for wanting a draw . You surely don't want Lewis Grabban any goals or the Baggies taking home three points in a Beggie.
Yesterday the Tigers and the Swans shared the goals in an eight goal thriller
GOAL! Callum Robinson takes advantage of a bad mistake by Samba Sow to run into the area and chip one by the Forest keeper.
1-0 Baggies!
Chris wood went off injured and was replaced by Matty Vydra as did Bou foul for the Saints , who was replaced by Djnepo
Morning, MUR - how have you been this week?
A Baggies win is surely better than a Forest win at this point
Thanks for giving me the Premiership updates - I'm concentrating my energies on the Championship today.
It's been a fairly good week. Thank you for asking. How about your week?
The late Prem match is bottom vs top and of interest to see if Pool will be one match closer to their first top flight title in thirty years
With Citeh banned from Europe, the Evil Blades are in the final CL spot, but that will surely change after tomorrow.
Five stoppage time minutes at St. Mary's
It was a busy one, honestly. Beyond the usual, I had two presentations that I did - one on Church and State issues in public schools for a friend's class on Monday and then another for our Professional Development Day on Teaching Controversial Issues. Add to that a couple of late nights watching the Oscars on Sunday and following the NH primary returns on Tuesday and I'm a bit knackered.
The 10 AM match on Plus will be the Teesiders vs the doomed Hatters
Agreed - a Baggies win here is far preferable to a Forest win. I've always said that I'm perfectly happy with a finish in the second automatic spot behind West Brom. I think we're a better footballing side than they are but Bilic has had them well organized this season.
I t sounds like the early part of the week was busy for sure. Sounds like both presentations were on controversial issues, but ones I wished I had watched
Sounds about right. Slaven with plenty of experience managing a West side
Not much of a match that. They have to mix it up a bit, but truthfully the Leeds (2nd) vs. Bristol TItties (7th) match was the one to show.
Oh my giddy aunt - our old friend Kyle Bartley has turned one in with a neat finish. 1-1!
It's 1-1 at the half in this mid table match with both teams about a couple of wins from safety. Ho Hum!
That's fairly good news . Glad your old mate was able to help out. I think he's Steve's old mate too.
Well, that's certainly my bailiwick and with the culture as partisan as it is these days, I'm called on to speak on the topic quite frequently. One of our fellow LHS alums threatened "war on the streets of America" if Bernie Sanders wins the election next November on a Facebook conversation yesterday. I don't know what this country is coming to!
Yes, Bartley is an Arsenal product but I'm not sure that he ever played in the first team. His partnership with Pontus Jansson was one of my favorites in recent years.
That'll about do it for this first half. I couldn't be happier with the scoreline. Long may it continue.
I'm off to fix my brekkies.
Back from walkies with Sparky and feeding Sparky. Still 1-1 in both matches
Time to feed Sunshine
Forest get us started in the second half and Samba is called into action almost from the off.
He Guys
I am just going to be around listening to the radio on my phone.
I guess a draw would be the best for Leeds
I hope Leeds match is being commentary match on talkSport or talkSport 2
I'll pop in once in while but have Laura here
I HAVE THE WHOLE WEEK OFF!!
A bit of argybargy there on the touchline as Robson-Kanu appeared to stamp on his marker.
I guess we want a draw at St Marys too.... both Burnley and Southampton are three points behind United
Not any more...Burnley are now one point behind United
Morning, UWS - enjoy your morning. MOT!
GOAL !!! MATTY VYDRA, THE REPLACEMENT FOR CHRIS WOOD, GIVES BURNLEY A 1-2 LEAD AT ST. MARY'S
Good morning, UWS. A well deserved last ever Winter Break
talkSport2 does have commentary from Elland Road
talkSport 1 will be around the grounds
Not sure what 5Live has...they usually get blacked out anyway
Im here for a bit
Kathy working out in the basement
Laura still asleep after going out with Tom last night in Saratoga
What about FotMob?
A great finish from a player , who had not scored in the Prem in eighteen months. A long ball from the half way line from Jeff Hendrick was chested down by Vydra and he scored with a rocket in the upper 90 from the edge of the box. Only his third ever Burnley goal.
Sorry, Bob. As far as I know nothing on FOTMOB
I will be taking Elizabeth to the bus station in about five minutes and should be back for the final few minutes of the match
Don't think so...there are no headphones
So much for these two fighting relegation. As things stand, Burnley much closer to an EL spot than the drop zone
I was thinking the same , Dave.
I was wondering if any matches would be cancelled. Isn't another storm supposed to hit the U.K.?
West From take the lead...another OG at the Hawthorns
Shame - I've been enjoying the FotMob at work these days.
Games are being called off on 5Live
Swindon just off
Storm Dennis has hit
Bob, took me a while but where do we quote Dennis?
GET talkSport!!!!!!!!
Just read a headline....City are now "highly likely" to face a Premier League deduction THIS SEASON
That's what I'm doing right now. I try not to put too many apps on my phone as it takes up too much of my memory.
Crikey! That's amazing.
Oh - that is a cracking own goal. My ESPN+ feed finally caught up with NocitoSportsChannel.
I have the British Radio app and the talkSport app
the talk TS app has both 1 and 2
The BR app has just ts1
Sorry mate
Leeds unchanged from Brentford
Roberts back on the bench after injury
Double substitution now for Forest who now have to chase this match.
That's alright, I was really happy with the way that we played against Brentford. We went away to the in-form club in the division and would have won it but for Kiko throwing one in his own net.
All this City talk.... they will appeal and be let off
Probably so; I can't imagine that Uefa will be able to stand up to them.
For the 3 o'clockers I am going to try and listen to talkSport 1 on my phone for around the grounds and ts2 for Leeds
The one problem with TS is that they seem to be delayed while 5Live isn't
If 5Live stays around the ground I will listen to them. They are right on par with NBCSN
Sounds like a plan, mate.
Forest almost score .....another OG
Shame NBC don't play SS ...what a rip off
Burnley hold on and win
They really should but the Gold package is magic, thanks!
English cricketer Stuart Broad tweeted
Is this referee a WBA fan? Never seen anything like it
Another goal at the Hawthorns.....DESMOND
Apparently a wonderful goal
Pleased Bob?
Leeds WILL gain on WBA and Forest
Wahay! Forest have leveled it!
Last chance saloon for free kick.... saved off the line.... full time
Great strike from Matty Cash!
It was saved off the line by a WEST BROM player!
That's great news for us. Forest remain a point behind us, while WBA are now 7 points ahead but we could narrow that gap to four points with a big win against Bristol Titties.
5Live is saying it was over the line!
But is the guy offside
There is goal line tech in the Championship but it is over
WILL close gap to 4
I guess ALL the matches in all the divisions are the reverse fixtures of the opening matches of the season
I know it was in the Prem
Sounds like Around the Grounds will be available on 5Live
As UWS mentioned, it's an unchanged starting XI for us today:
Kiko, Ayling, White, Coop, Stu Dallas, Kal, Klich, Harrison, Helder, Pablo, Patrick.
Subs: Meslier, Douglas, Ali, Berardi, Shackleton, Roberts, Augustin.
Fulham are at home to bottom of the table Barnsley today. I don't expect much help from that lot, so we'll need a win to stay second. Go on, you Whites! MOT!
Bob, I asked the question about Storm Dennis....what scene do we quote that has Dennis in it??
5Live just clicked off
Back from taking Elizabeth to the bus station and eating brekkies
I have around the ground on TS
Now looking for TS2
Congratulations to Bob on help from Desmond. Now a win vs Bristol City at ER is a must. That's not idle gossip.
We're away at Elland Road. Still no coverage on Talk Sport 2.
COME ON LEEDS! MOT! GET THAT WIN AT ER TODAY!
Harrison has nearly played Pablo in there. Nearly. Elland Road sounds like it's rocking.
I have the commentary going for the Leeds match
Leeds have an early corner.....cleared
Second corner
around the grounds cut off for TS1 as well
Sunderland score first goal
Cooper hits one just wide
Nope....I still have Around the Grounds on TS1
Oh - Coop nearly in for an opening goal there. Couldn't quite get the header on target. Good start from us, though.
I have coverage!!
Do you now?
I'm listening to Talk Sport 2
Helder breaks down the right but his cross is too close to David Bentley.
Wigan take lead at Cardiff
Nhaki Wells , who spent the first part of the season on loan to QPR from Burnley, now on loan at Bristol City from Burnley
See yesterday's Ch score?
Hull 4 Swansea 4
You're listening Bob?
Pablo wins another Leeds corner - our third already in a cracking opening.
Claims for a handball against Bristol Titties - nothing doing from the ref. Another corner, taken this time by Harrison.
I do like radio coverage....reminds me of Radio 2 Saturday afternoons
I saw that score. Sounds like quite a match and sounds like the Swans playoff hopes are fading
I did - that must have been a cracking match. We've got Hull in a couple of weeks time.
Cardiff tie it up
Richard Burton takes the lead at PR. Liz Taylor with the goal
Yeah - it is great coverage. These guys make the match sound exciting.
Agreed, Dave. Listening to Leeds on FOTMOB on Tuesday brought back memories of listening to matches on the radio
Fortunately, BC waste a free kick chance.
Steve's favorite former , Gunner, Perry Groves , with the analysis on the match from ER
So good to have Kal Phillips back in the fold after his suspension.
Gooner does have a soft spot for Perry, but I think his favorite Gunners alum right now is Ray Parlour, who he was lucky to meet at a meet and greet recently.
If Leeds win today then surely Bob will need to buy Desmond dinner due to the result in the early match
I think I told you before but I used to listening to Radio 2 Saturday afternoons which kicking a ball around in the living room
They had second half commentary from a match. A few minutes after the commentary started they would say, "we now welcome World Service listeners where ever you may be..."
While I was laying my room in Cortland, my roommate had Flash Gordon on his little TV.... a line on the show was.... we broadcast it on Shortwave around the world
I popped up off my bed and looked at my boom box...it had SW..... I found the BBC coverage!!
I was stuck by a radio for the next 25 years!!
Luke Ayling playing against his former club?
We're playing well so far but we need to work on the final ball.
FotMob coverage sound like two blokes in their living room in Leeds
When I lived at Lakenheath I would listen to Radio 2 on Saturdays in my bedroom, which was the back corner room upstairs then go downstairs to listen to the classified results. I would also listen to midweek matches on the radio.
Birmingham take the lead vs BRENTFORD!
Agreed. The FOTMOB blokes were monotone and really tedious
That's great news for Bob. Brum in great form and may make that last playoff spot if that continues
Somehow it stays out.... COME ON LEEDS
YES!!!!!
THEY DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YESSSSSSSS!!!!!!
Luke, you beauty! The Whites are 1-0 up!
GOAL !!!! WAY HAY ! LUKE AYLING GIVES LEEDS THE LAD AGAINST HID FORMER CLUB AFTER MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS WERE BLOCKED
Congrats , Bob.
COME ON LEEDS . SCORE AND OFTEN
Hard for me to hear Talk Sport because my father-in -law is listening to a Dean Martin marathon on my phone.
Fleetwood take the lead vs Posh.
Rock bottom Luton takes the lead at the Riverside
Bugger... Brentford equalize
The Bees tie it up at St. Andrews.
Leeds.... get it in again.... offside!!
Two great saves before that!!
COME ON...MAKE IT COUNT
Shame - Patrick could have really used a tap in to get back on track.
Reading take the lead at Wednesday on Saturday
They have really struggled since the change of year
Thought Leeds went two up, but Bamford was offside. Leeds need to take advantage as Bristol City keeper, Daniel Bentley , is preventing Leeds by being up by a cricket score.
Bob will be pleased by that goal at Hillsborough
Radio really include the fans
Leeds "all over" them
Leeds totally dominating this match. They need to turn this into lots of goals.
Oh - nice turn and shot from Patrick there after a Cruyff turn.
Close range effort from Bamford is several yards wide
NBC at CR.... showing the stand Bob and I were in some agro during the Villa match
Storm Dennis is lashing some rain down on Elland Road now.
Not sure it's to use Bamford and Cruyff in the same sentence.
I remember it well, mate - "Oi Jimmy, want a sweetie?"
LOL! Probably not, mate.
Got any plain Yorkies
When was the last time you had a Yorkie, UWS?
Barnsley take the lead at the Cottage!!!
BRILLIANT!
My favorites were Toblerone and Cadbury's Cream Eggs. That would explain my severe acne as a teen.
WOW! I did not expect that. Marvelous scoreline for us.
Not sure...Laura just brought a whole bunch of stuff
Crisps, flakes(my favorite), malteesers, clubs, ripples, milky bars and more
WOW! That's fantastic. Cauley Woodrow against his former club at Bob and Kate's . I think they defeated the Cottagers on opening day
Leeds just now to score again.... and again
I was a regular at the local newsagent scouting for chocolate .
Helder wins us another corner after a slide rule pass from Pablo. We're in full flow.
Stoke lead at Loftus Road
And they score again!
Two nil Potters
What was your favorite meal when you were in the UK over the holidays?
Blackburn take at the Valley
Ipswich tie it up
Had fish and chips every day except Christmas Day and the day I left
Battered sausages added some times
Klich has a drive at goal but Bentley is able to hang on.
That sounds marvelous!
You know what word I hate people using in modern day football?
Fish and Chips was the family favorite while we lived in Blighty.
Bently is making far too many good saves for B City
Bentley with another great save, this time from Helder.
another great save by David Bentley , who is keeping Bristol City in this match
QPR get a goal back... three goals sharpish at Loftus Road
Stoke two up at Loftus Road. The Real Dons in a real lead at L1 leaders, Rotherham
I'd like another goal just to cement our dominance.
Ipswich have fallen out of the play offs after being on top for quite a while
Cousin is at Fratton today despite the weather. Drove back from London to make the match
Leeds DEFINITELY need another
Bristol City make a first change, with Weimann coming off and replaced by O'Dowda. He's a midfielder on for a striker.
I wonder if the family will be in attendance for the Big Monday nighter vs the Gunners a fortnight from Monday
Again, I have Around the Grounds on TS1 and the match on TS2
Around the Grounds is based at Elland Road!
i guess that's to stop that incessant Leeds attack.
Desmond at Loftus Road
Right old ding dong at Loftus Road. 2-2 there
I am sure they will be
Is it a Monday match?
I know they whole round is midweek with no replays
Now Desmond at Loftus Road. A goal fest there.
Blackburn two up at the Valley
"Millwall the superior side at Deepdale"
Love to see Liverpool lose today at Carrow Road
Yes. The match at Fratton Park is on Monday the 2nd, three Cup Ties on Tuesday, three on Wednesday ,and the Rams vs United on Thursday the 5th
Klich wins us a corner now. We need to make this one count.
Perry Groves says that Leeds should be up by four or five goals. sure sounds like it
Coming up on half-time.
I so fear Liverpool are going to be like they were in the 70s and 80s!
I would love that.
I agree, Dave. United blew it by not getting Klopp and will pay the price
A Canaries win would be one of the greatest Prem upsets ever,
Leeds always or almost always fail with the final pass!
13 shots to 1
6 corners to 0
75% possession
the one BC shot was as hard as a back pass
Sounds like Bristol City has several former Villa players from that side that were horribly relegated
Into stoppage time now. I'm reasonably satisfied with proceedings so far.
Great analysis, Dave
