FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS!
So this is my FIRST FULL DAY of retirement and I get to watch my beloved Manchester United play again for the first time since the day before I went to work! Last time out, United won away from home in the Europa League 5-0... let's hope they can do the same today away from in the Premier League! United's first opponent.. Jose and his Spurs.... Can United hit the ground running?
COME ON MAN U
COME ON MAN U
COME ON MAN U
First up, the Canaries host the Saints... will Norwich give themselves hope?
Join me,
UWS

Good Afternoon, Dave. Thanks for getting us started. Delighted that you are part of the retirement club
Delighted to see the story on Marcus Rashford. Brilliant that he has donated to $25 million in charitable contributions and helped to feed hundreds of thousands of children who don't know where their next meal is. Also to Little Joe for volunteering to work at a food bank serving meals to those in need.
Important to recognize those in football doing good in the community.
Nailed on away win?
Norwich v Southampton
Only Southampton (14) have managed to win fewer home points this season than Norwich (15 - P14 W4 D3 L7)
Only Liverpool (12), Man City (9), Chelsea (7) and Leicester (7) have won more Premier League away games this season than Southampton (6)
Four matches back to back to back to back tomorrow!
NORWICH TEAM NEWS
Krul, Aarons, Klose, Godfrey, Lewis, Trybull, McLean, Buendia, Drmic, Cantwell, Pukki.
Subs: McGovern, Rupp, Vrancic, Leitner, Hernandez, Duda, Tettey, Idah, Martin
SOUTHAMPTON TEAM NEWS
McCarthy, Valery, Stephens, Bednarek, Bertrand, Armstrong, Ward-Prowse, Hojbjerg, Obafemi, Redmond, Ings.
Subs: Gunn, Vestergaard, Adams, Romeu, Boufal, Walker-Peters, Smallbone, Danso, Tella.
Hard to say. It may come down to which team is less rusty. Since matches have been played in empty stadiums there has been less of a home field advantage.
Norwich's last home match... A one nil win over the Foxes
I saw that with the four matches. The 12;30 kickoff is on the local NBC with the late on NBC Gold and Peacock.
I saw that match . It was a Friday nighter. A home win?
Shot of Carrow Road from a high... I remember going there many times
We used to park up by the cathedral, I would get fish and chips while the Dahlgrens and Dosedels would get kebabs(what numpites)
We would walk down a road that has a little S bend at the end. You used to continue and take a left and go over a bridge to the stadium
One time walking by the S bend, some bloke in a moped tried to take it too quickly and fell....he was being chased by the coppers!
We are off...well the kneeling does and then we are now off again
Howzat for timing? I'm just home in time for kick-off!
They're off from CR
Good afternoon, Bob. Great to have you on board . How have you been?
Big chance at the back of the post.... blew it!
It's been a weird week. I'm all on my own in a huge building.
Early free kick for the Canaries and the Saints struggle to clear for a Canaries corner.
The corner is out for another.
All Norwich pressure early on.
TWO ATROCIOUS CORNERS.... AND A THIRD!!
All three corners didn't beat the first man.... WHAT'S THE BLOODY POINT!! Why isn't he being lambasted !!
Welcome Commish
Just a reminder that today is Juneteenth
What do you two think about the work Rash and Little Joe have done in the community?
Cheers, mate! Happy Juneteenth to all of you.
EVERY team wants to play the same way... passing possession, useless corners and going sideways and backwards
Why doesn't a team ruffle feathers
Decent effort....crowd reacts after!
The German crowd noise didn't seem to have a delay
Cheers, Bob. Happy Juneteenth.
This is an absolute must-win for the Canaries. It'll be one of their last opportunities to play a bottom half side. A win would bring them within a point of Villa in 19th and two points behind Watford in that last safe spot of 17th.
Of course they're still going to be there... they are there at the BOTTOM
Another chance for Norwich..they take too long
OMG.... THE FOURTH corner not to beat the first man!
Fifth time of asking!!!! SUCCESS
OH! Superb Canaries counter. Nice one two between Jamaaal Lewis and Pukki, then a superb thorough ball to Drmic, who took too long to shoot and it was blocked for a corner headed away by new Saints skipper, JWP. Then the Saints counter is stopped in the Canaries box.
Redmond takes too long and then Southampton do get a header on target.
Definitely a must win for the Canaries. They host us next weekend in the Cup if I'm not mistaken
I Saw the CL and EL schedule this morning. The EL final is on August 21st in Koln with the CL Final on August 23rd in Lisboa. I know there was mention of the tournaments being played in August , but not sure if the specific dates were mentioned.
So wish we had some more entertainment in these first three games
David, what are your thoughts for the Big One
An 8 team knockout tourney
I think it will be a tight one at Spurs with it being a tactical battle. Probably will end in a draw. The loss of Delle Alli will not make much of a difference in my opinion.Your thoughts?
Norwich phaffing about with it at the back... I JUST DON'T get it!
I'm backing United for the win today - you're the in form team.
Do you want Pogba to start?
I think so , Dave. The CL matches will be in Lisboa and the EL matches in Koln. The exception will be the second legs that have not yet been played, but that's just a few matches.
What form?
Hello chaps. Carrow Road looks glorious in the sunshine today. I'm tossing a baseball against a wall, and revving my motorcycle in order to jump the barbed-wire fence in support of the Canaries hopes of avoiding the drop.
Sometimes I think Pogba is more of a disruption than a help. He's gifted, but think we will do the same whether he starts or sis on the bench
Good afternoon, Steve. I agree with you about the Canaries. Will you be a United in the late match?
The late match may be more noteworthy for Rash and Little Joe's help in the community than the actual football.
I don't remember the green and yellow checkerboard theme on the seats when I was in attendance at CR back in the day
Time for drinkies at CR
Welcome Steve
Oh, I'm depending on United to put a pout on L'l Joe's coupon today. Make it so Marcus and co.
Play resumes as new Saints skipper takes a corner that is headed away
And now Southampton's time to not beat the front post... at least it went over the first man though
Little Joe volunteered at a food bank serving meals. Did something nice for once.
I'm not entirely sure that the players earned that water break.
Welcome, Gooner!
Old Saints skipper that put himself on the transfer list with a well overcooked cross field pass.
I have noticed that the players are more embarrassed about screaming while being tackled
I concur . we've earned a meal break since we're goal "starved."
Another corner... will it beat first man... well... it looked like a miskick but it made a chance...saved
Since they're playing in empty stadiums every thing is heard now. Players doing less play acting since play has resumed.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. And as Franz Liebkind points out, Hitler was a terrific dancer.
Note that L'l Joe's contribution as small as it was, got covered slavishly. I'm not fooled by it.
A quiz question. The Saints and Canaries were the last two teams to do what?
Does it have anything to do with total points in a relegation?
The Canaries were Klose to conceding a penalty
No it does not . The direct opposite of that, Steve.
Big chance for Ings...hits the crossbar
OH!!!!! Danny Ings with a shot off the top of the bar with just Tim Krul to beat off a nice through ball. Should have given the Saints the lead.
Churchill was a better dancer than Mourinho, surely!
I'm thinking MUR
Pretty in Pink Alex McCarthy gets away with a clearance that come off of Pukki that took a lucky bounce to one of his teammates
I definitely don't want a visual on Churchill dancing.
Churchill was better looking than Little Joe, he was a better dresser than Little Joe, he had more hair and he told funnier jokes and he could dance the pants off of Little Joe!
Rash's contribution was definitely huge and deservedly received more coverage
Going from L1 to Prem in back to back seasons?
Churchill was more articulate and better educated than Little Joe for sure
Congratulations, Dave. That is the correct answer.
You will please be unconscious, Little Joe.
Another Saints/ Canaries piece of trivia. The Saints have been relegated twice from the top flight. Both times they and the Canaries were partners in relegation.
Wow... I impressed myself!
Well done, UWS!
Only got it because of you saying it was the complete opposite of relegation...so I guess I cheated a little
Credit given were credit is due. Great job, Dave.
Zimmmerman is a weird last name. German for Room Man
Norwich finishing strong here but they really need to create some more clear cut chances.
Stretch Armstrong is stretching the limits in terms of a booking
I hate... draws the contact.... IT IS A CONTACT SPORT
I'm disappointed in Pukki.
Nice one, MUR - gave me a laugh.
OH! Free header off the free kick and the header was not even Klose to being on target
A pair of stoppage time minutes
Cheers, Bob. It's the actual translation.
Two added minutes.... they stopped for drinks for two minutes and we had a couple of injuries to the head
Why don't people have more problems with the clock as I do?
Agreed, Gooner. He started like a house on fire but over the whole season he's proven the point that most strikers who light it up in the Championship are really just good Championship strikers but not really good enough for the big time.
Jamaal Lewis fouls stretch Armstrong half a yard outside the Canaries box
JWP with a shot saved.... and half time it is
JWP curls the free kick straight to Tim Krul and it's 0-0 at the half
Well, that was all a bit boring. I'm going to whip out the smelling salts during half time and hope for better in the second half.
This whole game makes me want to Pukki
Pogba "traveled" with squad...why wouldn't he have traveled?
The second half is underway from CR on a sunny Friday evening
We are off for the second half
Surely THREE points is MUCH BETTER than ONE. One point is not that much better than none
GO FOR THE WIN!
BOOM BOOM, Dave! Pukki had the fewest touches of any player in the first half.
Just to let you all know that since the five changes have to be made in three windows that I have not seen any stoppage time substitutions.
GOAL
Ings give the Saints the lead!
GOAL! Danny Ings puts a dagger into Norwich's hopes for survival.
GOAL !!!!! WHAT A SUPERB CURLING EFFORT IN THE UPPER 90- BY DANNY INGS.
Nice finish
It was a great finish , but the Canaries did a poor job of clearing the ball and were punished.
How many grounds have you guys been to in the UK.
Bob and I have been chatting with my brothers. I know the Dahlgren brothers have been to more than me... they never used to invite me enough
I've been to Wembley, Old Trafford(now) Carrow Road, Portman Road, Highbury, White Hart Lane, Vicarage Road, Abbey Stadium, Fratton Park and Celtic Park
Nathan Redmond with a shot blocked for a corner off a four man move.
The only grounds for me have been CR, PR, the Vetch , and Wembley. We have driven past the Abbey and the former Layer Road, but haven't watched matches at those two grounds
Two nil!!
Bloody hell - Armstrong has added to the Canaries' misery. Game over?
GOAL !!! SAINTS GO TWO WITH A WELL PLACED LONG RANGE EFFORT FROM ARMSTRONG, BUT TIM KRUL SHOULD HAVE DONE BETTER OFF A NICE MOVE ON THE BREAK
Hard to see the Canaries coming back from this and are in real trouble.
Saints were probably safe before this match... almost definitely now
They have recovered well since their 9-0 thumping at home to Leicester
Would love to see the away team win at CR in the cup next weekend
I agree 100%, Dave with your assessment of the Saints.
Danny Ings wins a Saints corner
Dahlgren boys...grounds?
Pogba on the bench today. I'm fine with that
Oh - off the line; nearly 0-3!
OH! JWP with a shot cleared off the line by Max Aarons on another quick Saints break.
United's line announced.... Pogba is on the bench!
De Gea, Obi Wan, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw, McTom, Fred, James, Bruno, Rashford, Martial
Bench
Mata, Pogba, Matic, Romero, Greenwood, Ighalo, Lindy, Williams, Baiily
The Saints are really giving the Canaries a torrid time with their fast breaks.
Spurs
Lloris, Aurier, Davinson-Sanchez, Dier, Davies, Sissoko, Winks, Sonaldo, Lamela, Berwijn, Kane
That's basically the expected lineup for United.
One thing about United's squad these days....there are players on the bench that could come on and score some goals when needed. That hasn't been the case recently
Trybull and Hernandez on for Trybull and Drmic as Daniel Fork makes a double substitution for the Canaries.
Still nothing from our Scandinavian Duo
That's true with Greenwoood and Co there's plenty of firepower on the bench
I've been to Wembley, Carrow Road, Portman Road, Abbey Stadium, Highbury, Emirates, White Hart Lane, Upton Park, The Orient, Selhurst Park, Baseball Ground, Filbert Street, St. Andrews, Old Trafford, Anfield and, of course, Elland Road!
Pukki should have scored there
Pukki with a shot blocked by Bednarek for a Canaries corner
Norwich have the ball in the net but it's ruled offside. Desperate times for Norwich.
Ball in the net... offside
The crowd noise is pathetic!
I was impressed with how the Bundeliga did it
The The corner is headed on and Vrancic tucks it away, but it's disallowed for offside
Agreed. The Bundesliga has been organized and have done an impressive job with the way they handeled things.
Our Friend the ref says it's time for drinkies.
Nice one Bob... I knew you went to more
Who did you see at Anfield....and don't say Liverpool!
Players back on the pitch and play resumes with a Canaries free kick
Agreed. Lots of grounds. Very impressive.
Armstrong forces Tim Krul to turn around a shot headed just inside the post
It wasn't Liverpool. It was Italy v. Russia during Euro 96. The only time I've been. The OT one was Germany v. Russia - same tournament.
Oh - I forgot one. The Manc Derby at Maine Road.
The corner is cleared then won back by ex Canary , Nathan Redmond
Danny Ings booked for a striker's challenge/.
Nice one!
BTW, I just added both Vera Lynn videos on the thread
A shot of the CR Hotel that is understandably closed.
How on earth do they pull the curtains of rooms in that hotel?
Michcael Obafemi tackles Jamaal Lewis for a Saints corner
Nice one, mate. I was wondering when I hear the news yesterday if your mum ever came across Vera during her singing days. They must have been contemporaries, right?
The corner from JWP is headed away then Ryan Bertrand with a shot that lands in Row T
Would the view from the hotel room be better than the view from parts of the stadium?
I wish I knew, Bob
They did the same stuff for sure
Peter Sellars asked for my mom's autograph
Three nil
GOAL !!! SAINTS GO THREE UP NICE FINISH FROM FORMER CANARY, NATHAN REDMOND OFF A PASS FROM MICHAEL OBAFEMI
aNOTHER cANARIES DOUBLE CHANGE. tOO LITTLE, TOO LATE.
Useless effort from some bloke named Black Lives Matter
Same, Bob. Wembley, Carrow Road, Portman Road, Abbey Stadium, Highbury, Emirates, White Hart Lane, Upton Park, The Orient, Selhurst Park, Baseball Ground, Filbert Street, St. Andrews, Old Trafford, Anfield, and, Elland Road. Also, the Dell, Loftus Road, Stamford Bridge and the Manor Ground. Dad was a ground-hopper at heart. He'd have loved to tick off a few Scottish grounds too, but after we drove through the neighborhood around Hampton Park, that really put the willies in him.
So did Bob go to these too or just you with the extra ones?
I went to Celtic Park(Parkhead) while camping with the Hunters
My dad didn't really take me to any games except for ordering me and him seats for Wembley matches while I was in Middle School
I'm jealous of you three.
Right. That Maine Road fixture. How did I forget that? That's another one that scared the crap out of Dad and could have been the reason we never went back to Manchester.
I never went to any matches with my parents. It was either a field trip or catching a ride with someone.
We're headed for the first away win of project restart and Dave predicted this.
I remember going to Highbury with the Dahlgrens... took the tube to the match which was fine.... got off the tube and walked down a street like Coronation Street....down a driveway between two houses and there was the stadium
Got back on the tube after the game.... SCARY!!!! Fans kept forcing themselves into an already packed train....we stayed for ages with fans forcing door open
Che Adams wins Che corner for the Saints.
Norwich's fixtures to come:
Home to Everton
Home to United
Away to Arsenal
Home to Brighton
Away to Watford
Home to West Ham
Away to Chelsea
Home to Burnley
Away to Citeh
They'll need maximum points against Brighton, Watford, and West Ham just to get to 31 points. Maybe a point or two against Everton and Burnley. I just can't see it.
Not the Dell. I was in high school on a host nations trip before Bob got there. And my friend from here got tickets for QPR for Melanie and me and him because his Dad was a QPR fan. Bob was there at the Chelsea and Oxford United games, I'm sure of it.
Danny Ings replaced by a Saints Academy grad. Boo Foul about to come on
Yeah - there was always a whiff of danger about going to matches back in the 70s. It's not the same today. But the atmosphere isn't there either.
GEEZ...subbing....with ONE MINUTE LEFT
I HATE IT
Agreed, Bob. In the words of Aerosmoth the Canaries: Going Down
They're doing it to irk, UWS
TEN subs used...HALF of the outfield players didn't start!
AN LOB blogging Quartet of stoppage time minutes.
I don't remember Stamford Bridge or Oxford but probably.
I'm going to pick up a curbside order. Should be back just in time for the Spurs vs United
I remember that you were with us on one of our trips to White Hart Lane, too, Dave. That was the Hoddle side. Watching him just warm up was a privilege.
What are you picking up, MUR?
A lot of damage control for Daniel Farke after this one.
We saw a game at WHL vs Ipswich. We stood at the side of the pitch.... of course... it was the KADOOMPH match
That's it
Southampton easily win
Now let's have another easy away win
It's funny you remember that Dave. Dad didn't have any fear of pressed in crowds and before Hillsborough, it never crossed his mind. There were so many matches we attended where I could have lifted my feet off the ground and been carried along. I miss the innocence of not knowing any better, because at the time, it was fun to be little and finding those spaces where I could squeeze in. The Baseball Ground match was the only one Dad pulled us out of, but we were 10 and 8 against a barrier wall in one of the ends that I don't think either of Bob or I could see over. That was dangerous because the crowd would surge from the back forward for every shot on goal.
I know you and Bob had a close call at Carrow Road once. My worst was England vs NI when bottles rained down from the upper areas of Wembley. Two glass bottles crashed and splintered feet from us, before some other guy took a bottle in the forehead which burst his face. When Coach Hunter visited me here in Alexandria, that was a memory that made him shudder.
I forgot the Icelandic national stadium, and the Estadio Municipal La Cisterna in Santiago Chile.
We went to Stamford Bridge when they were in the midst of rebuilding the ground Bob. It was almost a building site where we were. Mom went too for some reason and we roasted in the sunshine because the roof hadn't been rebuilt.
A win by United today would be huge!
Overtake Chelsea and push Spurs down
Back when United lost at the Bridge in the Double year(Chelsea did the double over United but we beat them in the Cup Final) The ground had a huge stand but not much else and a dog track
No need to do the line up... what's the point
COME ON MAN U
COME ON MAN U
COME ON MAN U
Agreed. Those chumps in the Bundesliga would go over to their end and clap at the cutouts, and then hold hands at the end and cheer the cutouts. Madness.
Getting to Highbury by tube was fine...everyone arriving at different times... as for leaving!!
Nice touch with the fans lost... I hope those aren't their normal seats....they could have all caught it from each other
And we are off!
Come on United...start fast
Talk about perfect timing. I walked while the players were taking a knee
Back from Cracker Barrel where I picked up supper.
Our worst experience was the Justin Fashenau sending off for Norwich against Villa
Kevin Bond scoring a last minute penalty in front of us to cheer up the fans
And the trip to Wembley where we picked up drunks from Bury for the trip to Wembley
Free kick to United. Great tackle by McTom...Bruno took too long but got fouled....of course it dint' come to anything... he wasn't offside!
Rash heads wide off a free kick
Lots of canned noise. Will they be cheering when United score?
Aurier Shaw does have a pass blocked for a corner.
