The Champions League Quarter-finals Wrap Up
Good afternoon, gents - I've really come to love these daily European footie check-ins this past couple of weeks. Today, the Quarter-final stage wraps up with Man City's clash with upstart French side Lyon. The winner will have the dubious privilege of meeting a rampant Bayern side that murdered Barca yesterday.
Join me for all the fun and games this afternoon, why don't you?

Hiya, I'll be here at kick-off. But in my wildest dreams, I can't see this one being as entertaining as yesterday's was.
I am willing to give up one of the threads and just listen to it on the radio.
The Teams
Man City: Ederson, Walker, Garcia, Laporte, Cancelo, Fernandinho, Rodrigo, Gundogan, De Bruyne, Sterling, Jesus.
Lyon: Lopes, Denayer, Marcelo, Marcal, Dubois, Cornet, Caqueret, Guimaraes, Aouar, Toko Ekambi, Depay.
"best player I've every coached" is on the bench
Good afternoon . Here to join everyone for the final quarterfinal
I'm willing to give up a link as well. Not as excited about this match as yesterday
Xavi for the Barca job? Seems to be the front-runner.
The "Jeff" on the bench for Lyon today. His star burnt bright too early for Arsenal.
Afternoon, guys - it's been so much fun to have a chat with all of you every afternoon during these tournaments. Thanks for joining me.
I heard some talk about Bielsa being the best candidate
I'll be listening to the radio
I really think the CL and EL should have a tournament from the quarters EVERY year
I'm keen to get a look at Houssem Aouar. He's got a growing reputation and I'm not sure that I've ever seen him play. Big night for the kid.
The straight knock-out format is the best. These "leagues" throw up far too many boring matches.
Wot! They can't have Bielsa! He's ours!
I agree, Steve - and even the two-legged knock-out rounds produce a lot of cagey affairs where teams are playing for the one away goal or trying to avoid it.
I'm really getting fed up with the same adverts in rotation. At this point, I'd like to see Messi, Razza and Mo waterboarded with Pepsi.
I wouldn't mind the CL starting their tournament in the Round of sixteen and the Euros in the Round of 32. That would make for far more exciting matches
It seems that when clubs like Barca and Juve are going with former players that are inexperienced managers it's because the top managers are avoiding those clubs like the plague. They can no longer attract top managers
I think the group stages are fine.... Round of 16 be a two legged affair....group winners getting the advantage of playing at home in the second leg....btw. I don't think it is an advantage.... goes into extra time you're screwed with an away goal!
From the quarters.... one off tournament style!
LOL! I was thinking of a nonstop dunking booth, but waterboarding is better
Those two legged matches in the round of 16 and 32 are primarily cagey affairs , which is why I had suggested starting a tournament as soon as the group stages end,. We do agree that the single elimination tournaments are needed annually.
Peter Dreary and Jim Beglin on the mics
I like it one City!
Who cares if it has to be played in a one or two week period
The match will be played in the Jose Avalarde stadium
It could be done after the season.... which could finish slightly early because of midweek spots being open for league play instead of CL play
The last French team to win the CL was Marseille in 1991 when it was called the European Cup
Teams out on the pitch now for the anthem.
It is Sporting's ground
COME ON LYON!
5Live commentary from a studio.... number restrictions in the stadium
Citeh have been eliminated by CL teams in the quarters the past two seasons , so they must fancy their chances since there are no PL teams remaining in the competition
Sitting here listening to the radio... reminds me of listening to my shortwave radio!
It's your old mate Memphis Depay leading out the Lyon troops tonight.
We are off on 5 Live
Lyon will be depending on the fact that D Pie are round not squared
They're off from the Jose Alvalarde Stadium
DiPi runs and runs and runs....he never stops!
d 4.14 was a pure and utter flop at OT even though having LVG as his manager didn't help matters
Just on the off chance, I tried the link and I was able to connect!
Is one of you not connected?
I am happy to log off and listen to radio!
The radio is ahead of the TV
Sterling fails to find a teammate with the cross.... Bayern found a man... Bayern had FOUR men in the box
Pass from Sterling results in a last ditch clearance that prevents an easy tap in
Oh - Sterling was in there with a great chance to play Gabby Jesus in. Couldn't find him but a good start for Citeh.
Steve hasn't commented for a bit so I assume he's the odd one out.
I'm watching on the link
Steve, let me know and I will log off... Totally fine listening to the radio
Oh - Walker's chest back nearly squirmed under Ederson's body. Risky!
Thanks, Dave!
D Pis runs are far more meaningful than they were with United
Lyon trying to pass out from the keeper just like Barca..... mindless
Lyon run back, Jason Denayer played a handful of matches with Citeh, primarily pre Pep. He will sure hope to be a Denayer to Citeh's advancement
Sorry. Meant to say right back
Look at that crap....sticking yourself in the corner!!
Nothing to comment upon yet. But I'm watching on the link, thank-you.
Are we ALL watching the link?
I'd love to see United finish off the rest of Spain tomorrow!
Lyon counter off a Citeh cross and win a corner
Lyon won at the Etihad and drew in France in last season's group stages
I do miss the multiple camera angles so that it doesn't feel like they've got the camera mounted on a blimp. I hope they can find some way to return to better camera angles.
Decent effort from the French....saved
Decent pop there from Marcel - Ederson right behind it.
Corner headed away then a long range effort by Fernando Marcal is saved by Ederson
Where's Bob? Did he get shut-out?
It seems like it - I don't know what happened!
Are all four of us watching ?
I'm still on - how about you David?
It must be Al Prez who is watching this on TUDN
Based on those results, Lyon may have Citeh's number
Im on
I'm watching on the CBS link
Leo DuBois picks up the first yellow of the night for a nibble on Cancelo.
Dubois booked for a nasty challenge on Cancelo
No need for a card.... I just don't get it... it was a foul!
Players can't get touched these days
Peter Dreary said that KDB didn't play in either of those matches against Lyon last season
It was already 1-1 seven minutes ago yesterday
De Bruyne did have a lengthy injury and was out much of last season.
Did KDB get a card... it was just like the other guy.... no... the Messi affect
Dubois carded for having a nibble as if nobbling on escargots. Do I get carded for that remark?
Rats! I got frozen, tried to refresh and got blocked out this time.
Jason A Denayer to Sterling's advancement.
I had that happen to me . You may need to refresh a couple more times
Denayer started with Citeh and has played with Celtic and the Black Cats. An unusual journey to get to a CL quarterfinal team
I watched Anelka on NetFlix this morning.
Aouar tripped from behind as he was starting a counter . That should have been a booking
That Gundegan take-out was the worst foul so far and goes uncautioned.
GOAL !!!CORNET GIVES LYON THE LEAD
And we wait for VAR................
VAR checking if Ekambi was offside. He took a long ball from the back well and laid it off for Cornet to score.
It counts. Ederson totally clueless.Left his near post open and was easily beaten
It's a goal. One-nil Lyon. A very opportunistic take and the best thing that could happen. Pep's players have to score and not faff around passing.
An interesting stat from Peter Dreary. Four out of five of the Lyon goals against Citeh have been scored by Cornet.Surely Citeh would know to keep a better eye on him
Still off the link. Was the goal given?
Agreed, Steve. Not a single shot . What's the point of hundreds of passes if you don't get a shot on goal?
Yes it was. Lyon lead
I think that thing on his neck that seems to grow bigger every time I see Ederson might have got in his way of protecting his near post.
That goal should definitely liven things up - Citeh will have to push now for an equalizer. It had gotten a bit stale.
Free kick from KDB fisted away by lopes
Fernandinho booked for Citeh for a clumsy challenge
Bob, I can get off the link if you need a spot opened up.
Bob, you have a channel to watch this on, right?
Doing stuff around the house.... missed the Lyon goal!
So happy
That would be great, David - thanks!
Lopes fumbled a routine cross from Cancelo then makes up for it with a reflex save from Gundogan on the rebound
wriggling it mischeviously..... NEVER got the ball in the box!!!
Did you get knocked off?
As I said, I can get off any time
Let me know
Nervy bit of keeping from the Lyon bloke. Citeh very patient in their built up. I guess one goal doesn't get Pep to change his ways. Tiki-taka-tiki-taka-foul-tiki-taka-tiki-taka-taka.....
City lose....Pep gets the sack.... I can dream
I'm off the l;ink, so you should be able to watch, Bob
Are you sure David.... I can get off
If Citeh lose then surely that means Tiki Taka is on it's way out. Not now , but in the next few years. A sign that teams won't win the CL playing that way
Thanks, guys - I'm back on. I got frozen and tried to refresh the stream and got knocked off temporarily.
Thanks, Dave. I already got off. Am watching on one of the Spanish language channels
I agree. The gloss is off for Pep's way. It's boring and thankfully beatable.
A clash of heads between Fernandinho and Aouar
It appears that Bayern and Liverpool are heading the new way of playing
Jason a Denayer of Citeh's advancement by fouling Sterling just outside the box
Curling free kick from KDB straight to Lopes , who punches away instead of catching it
Another nervy punch from Lopez. He reminds me of Ospina back there, too punchy for my tastes.
Cornet down for Lyon. He wasn't even touched. Hate when players try to con the ref like that
Ospina guilty of shaky keeping last Saturday for Napoli in the loss to Barca
Only an English commentary team could call Walker's foul, "just a body check." Not a card, but definitely foul play.
another fumble by Anthony Lopes in the Lyon goal . A tame shot from Rodri fumbled when any one of us could have caught that
Yeah, if we had picked up some money for Ospina, that would have been icing on the cake.
Oh - nice stuff from City - finding Razza on the by-line - played it back to Rodri who rather scuffed his shot.
Pass from KDB cut out for a Citeh corner
Lopes is not confidence inspiring.
Short corner routine didn't quite come off there. But City have got the bit between their teeth now.
Citeh win another corner.
Corner headed high and wide by Rodri
A pair of stoppage time minutes
City don't really have any big threats from ordinary corners.
Citeh have been better the last few minutes. Then a close range block by Lopes from Sterling for a Citeh corner
Their main threat from corner would be LaPorte
Lyon one up at the half
Lyon troop in with a surprising 1-0 lead. City have got to freshen things up in the second half.
Looking at the replay of the Cornet goal, I'm astonished by the poor Citeh defending. Shockingly lazy play from Kyle Walker not tracking back.
I think Pep agrees Bob. He's been giving Kyle an earful all first half.
He's also letting KDB and Cancelo have it
Sorry I have been in and out
Hopefully I can stay for the conclusion of City losing
I'm already nervous about tomorrow!
Can it be third time lucky in a semi final this season?
My Spanish is muy limitado, but he did say that Lyon have been comfortable in the first half. I agree with that
Teams out for the second half
City are kept waiting by the Lyon side who are 1-0 up from the first half. Bit of gamesmanship from the French outfit.
The second half is underway
Back for more. Take the handbrake off!
Away we go
The halftime host did refer to Lyon's goal as spectacular. I disagree with that. Kyle wlaker and Ederson with their laziness , gifted them the goal
I can't believe that Lyon were 7th in Ligue 1. I'm not sure that I could name seven Ligue 1 sides!
Or City were sent out early by Pep....the genius
Corner to Lyon
Agreed. Why be cautious against a team that finished seventh in Ligue Un
Sevilla were no great shakes. You should prevail.
Shin high front post...modern day football
Well Copenhagen weren't wonderful and we struggled
Pep and Jose are two average Joe's at best . Any less than that is a disaster waiting to happen
Peter Dreary says that City have a bench full of "locksmiths." Shouldn't that be "lock pickers?"
The season was called early....they would probably have finished higher if the season went the distance
I expect a tight match tomorrow and could see that being settled in ET or pens.
Of course, Steve. knows how we would feel about City winning.... just like Chelsea!
That's very likely, Dave. Good point.
Citeh's need some locksmiths to unlock the shackles put on them by Pep
Citeh have match winners on the bench if necessary. We all seen them play their tortuous boring football for 75 minutes, only to change it up and snatch what they need by the end. Were Citeh to go out in this one would have to have some repercussions for Pep and his philosophy of boredome.
Free kick from D Pi didn't even travel the radius of the circle.
Memphis earns a cheep on that he then thrashes into the wall.
DiPi hits the free kick well....but forgot that there was a man-made wall in between him and the goal
Don't care.
DiPi hits the free kick well....but forgot that there was a man-made wall in between him and the goal
I think I can name seven Ligue Un sides.
Agreed - this has got to be do or die for Pep. If they were to go on to get knocked out by a rampant Bayern side in the semis, he'd be forgiven but not after this performance and not by Lyon.
I'll bet you can, David.
The phantom second message makes an appearance
Bayern are so much more exciting than City....much better that when Bayern were led by the Genius
useless corner but needlessly headed out for another corner.... that first corner was going out on the fly!!
Second corner..... useless
PSG, Lyon, Lille ,Marseille, St. Etienne, , Bordeaux, Guingamp. I didn't do any googles o anything of that nature
Fernandinho riding a fine line now.
Mahrez to come on. Should have happened at the interval.
Bayern underachieved in Europe when Pep was in charge
Bordeaux, PSG, Lille, Monaco, St. Etienne, Metz, Toulous, it's easy.
From the Beeb
At the moment, the semi-finals looks like:
Two German teams
Two French teams
Three German managers of which none are Jurgen Klopp
Agreed. He can change a match
Well done, Steve - I wouldn't have gotten Lille or Metz.
All depends on who Mahrez replaces.
Mahrez on for Fernandinho. About time
It's Fernandinho and good riddance to that thug
The NY Metz?
Let's go
Metz go
Je suis un Ligue un expert!
The two commentators complaining about Lyon players going down
City do the same
Players can only complain if they don't do the same
Lyon cannot just sit back..... they need to attack City.... they hate it
A change in the balance of power and philosophies. Just a few years ago we were criticizing the Bundesliga and Ligue Un. Now they're at the forefront of European footie
Rodrigo is another player that can do one as far as I am concerned.
Absolutely - why do Citeh need a water carrier like Fernandinho on the pitch right now.
Nice one, Dave. Bon Francais, Steve
It's just a one season
Last season..... CL and EL all English!
Les citoyens ont des problems
Oh - KDB gave it a good wallop and Lopes made a meal of it but it was fairly comfortable.
Not that great of shot.... keeper wanted to make it look like a worldy...... catch the ball!
Did Lopes make a meal of that or what? His defenders are probably all on anxiety meds.
Either way it's a surprise to see two German and two French clubs in the semis, providing this result holds. I don't think any of us predicted that
Mahrez on the right... made a move... beat the man... didn't cross it... tried to take him on again!
Citeh have won lots of corners, but have done absolutely nothing with them
Lyon last year's Ajax?
Lyon players getting pretty floppy out there now - not impressed.
Under half an hour to go
BTW, has the drinks break been canned in the CL
I don't remember it during these matches
Hope it is the same of the EL
Marcel with another ambitious effort that Ederson collected comfortably.
