Tuesday League Third Round Action
A week after the Second Round of the League Cup was played the week of Third Round matches begins and the seven clubs that qualified for Europe enter at this stage. The match of interest to the majority is Luton vs Manchester United from Bedfordshire. It's early in the season, but this should be an interesting contest as the Hatters are surprisingly challenging for promotion to the Premiership after continuing their good form from the end of last season. Join me for this and a few other matches .

Dave already stated that the Orient Express vs the Spuds has been cancelled do to COVID on the train. That's another fixture that gets to be squeezed into Little Joe's supposedly congested schedule.
Newport County has taken the lead vs the Hornets, who are thinking more about promotion than presumably the League Cup
Newport County two up vs the Hornets
Hey Boys
Has your link started yet?
Mine hasn't
Not liking the line up by OGS
TWO holding middies
Against LUTON
Finally it is has started!
Good Afternoon, Dave. My link just started,. No need for two holding middies vs the Mad Hatters
Snoddy has given the Hammers the lead vs the Tigers
Breaking news that Moyes has Covid and sent' with West Ham tonight
The Hammers just took the lead
The Fourth Round is next week. This competition is going at a lightning fast speed, presumably due to the late start of the season
United's XI
Henderson, Obi Wan, Bailly, Mags, Williams
Fred, Matic, Mata, VDB
Lingard, Igahlo
YIKES! Why are so many footballers getting COVID? You would think they would do everything to keep safe. I guess one person can get everyone else sick
On the benc
Rash, Greeny, Bruno, Dalot, James, Mengi, Grant
Tunnicliffe played with Pogba in the youth team's midfield
Same formation as Saturday, but that's still a decent United lineup. DVB could be the key player this match
Talk about allowing fan starting October 1st. A horrible idea since players are still getting COVID
Are getting a better angle than behind the goal?
They're off from Bedfordshire.
NO NAPS , UNITED!
Finally!
United wearing gray
What are Luton wearing? Are they in red now!
Always used to orange and then changed to white
I reckon that with Boris backing off reopening, that football will also back off that 10/01 date.
The Prime Minister has stopped that just today
Letting fans in in small numbers would be fine
It has happened
In a match between 2nd and 3rd in the Championship last season,. Hal Robson-Kanu gave the Baggies the lead then the Bees tied it up a few minutes later
Hammers two up vs the Tigers
Separating the fans in the stadium wouldn't be difficult
It is outside before and after
United OF COURSE haven't started on the front foot
Haller with the goal. Jammy Lenko assisted with both goals
United get a shot off....inside five minutes....stunning
It didn't Mata that United ha d a shot because it was too easy for the Keeper to save at the near post
The rise in Covid infections in Britain and Europe would indicate the opposite. Lock-downs work if the stupid people would stay isolated.
The Hornets pull one back at Newport , trailing 2-1
Good afternoon, Steve. Both you and Dave make good points.
That was a decent cross by Lualua... no one on the end of it
Hiya.
Your change kit..., what do you call that color? I like it.
Dave's god point is that Who will enforce social distancing outside the stadium. I was invited to be one of 900 fans to watch the Toros on the 30th. I declined and my reason is no mask wearing while eating and who will enforce the rules in line at the concession stand and even hard in the loo? It should be a no for fans at matches
Again...the crap that goes on in the back is ridiculous
Kepa's mistake on the weekend...stunning!
Before that, two guys standing in the box close to him but Liverpool's front three right on the edge of the box.... he still goes short!!
STUNS ME!!
If they back off... go short but not if they are there to pounce the second it goes to the defender!
Why doesn't anyone complain...it is just the "WAY" you must play?
LIndy win the first corner of the match
Bloody short corner.... RUBBISH
I would call United's jersey charcoal gray . Hard to tell due to the glare
When did corners become a bad thing?
Teams used to get excited when getting a corner
Bring the big boys up
England in the WC!
Now....lets go short and not getting the ball in the box
Mags had dreams of his Tranmere goal there
Maguire with a ling range effort sliced well wide
And when did Luton abandon Orange shirts?
It's got little mountain ranges on it
Sorry all I do is complain but it is really ticks me off
I'll stop commenting if I'm annoying you guys!
Agreed, Dave. The Chelsea Kepa is not a kepa. That's why Lamps is trying to replace him with a French keeper. Not sure if he'll be a kepa either
The gray looks a bit green and reminds me of Deutschland away from the early seventies after a heavy downpour.
You could do with a bit of Netzer and Muller.
Not sure, Steve. I'm out of the loop on the Hatters. When I lived in England they wore orange shorts then changed their kit to white shirts. Not sure when it became red
United are not stamping their authority on this match
Can you tell which team is Prem or Champ
Agreed, Steve and also tactics where they can express themselves
Newport takes a 3-1 lead vs the Hornets and the Baggies take a 2-1 lead vs the Bees
West Brom lead 2-1 at home to Brentford after being pegged back
Newport 3-1 vs Watford
Nice save by Shea from Mata then United win a corner
Decent effort from Mata... saved
A normal corner.... but no one attacks the ball
Great shot. Followed up by a Nocito requested corner into the area.
Steve, I wasn't aware of the rise in cases in Europe. We were the hot spot in late July and early August , but now are cases have really declined. I guess this means we can be the hot spot again
I asked the same question earlier about the Orange
I know I the early 90s, Luton wore white shirts with blue shorts when they beat a big wig in the cup.... Hartson scoring
Scary thing is they're contemplating allowing students back on campus next week in our area
Williams gives the ball away....United survive the break
The Hatters break and former United trainee , Ryan Tunnicliffe finds Hylton who shoots into the side netting
Long range effort from Fred deflected for a corner
When United break quick...they look quite dangerous
In the Emery era, I got tired of corners because there was no-one who fancied being on the end of Ozil's low quality balls into the area. The short ones at least didn't immediately task our so-so midfield chasers as the defenders scampered back into some sort of formation.
It didn't Mata that United won a corner because a low corner was cleared by the first man,Hylton as United playing as if they're on vacation at the Hilton
This commentator keeps saying Matic when he means Mata
As David would say.....what the mata with him
Bess tie it up at the Hawthorns . Now Desmond
Absolutely. France, Italy, and Spain were patting themselves on the back because their new infection rate had stabilized.
Now, it's surging again in those countries.
LOL, Dave. You are quite familiar with my work
The problem with United in the movement up front...there is none!
United can only play effectively on the break. The best way to play United is to let them have the ball
Steve, Those countries sound like us. I could see our cases going back up in a month or two. Too much complacency
If United win then they may play the Seagulls at the AMEX, where they play at Saturday in the Prem
United look overconfident based on observation
Who was the biggest Luton Town fan?
Remember they playing on artificial turf at one point?
They were in the top tier the year before the Premier League....they missed out on all the big bucks
And the lifting of restrictions doesn't help. The hope of one or two of these vaccines, still at the trial stage is what we have to look forward to.
There's a bartender at a place here in Alexandria who is a bit of a FB celebrity because he's volunteered as a test case for one of the vaccines.
Steve will be interested to note that the Foxes vs Gunners is on Plus tomorrow. If the Gunners win then there will probably be a rematch of the rematch of the Charity Shield next week. Both rematches would be at Anfield
Wss it Chrissie Everett's husband who was the Hatter fan?
Agreed, Steve. I'm glad they haven't lifted restrictions here. So far in place till October 19th. Hopefully they keep them based on what's happened in Europe. We definitely need a work vaccine ASAP
I remember the artificial pitch at Loftus Road, but not Kenilworth. Not sure who their big fan was
A shot like that from Kioso.. you reckon he ever has hit the target with one of those? Even in training? I just don't get from where these mooks derive the confidence from 35-40 yards.
Jammy Lenko puts the Hammers three up from the spot vs the Tigers. That goes along with his pair of assists
Nice run by Lingard.... why did he pass
What a waste
I think some of these mediocre players think they're world beaters when they're not. It's pure arrogance and complacency
Hatters win a corner
Poor Unite clearance off the corner and Jordan Clark has a shot come off of Bailey for a corner
NO ONE ever gets the ball wide and takes a man on one on one and crosses...the cut it back and recurculate
Lindy look a right fool when taking on Quioso
You reckon you could defend a corner without Ihalo tasked with marking a player? Because that's what I miss. A forward who stands on the halfway or bottom of the center circle as an outlet once a corner is successfully defended, followed by many in support breaking out of their area.
Sadly , OGS is not one to rattle the teacups when needed. I would be letting the players have it
It's basic task. We did that AYA level, let alone this level. Not sure what they are teaching the players now
Also, corners need to be man to man marking. Zone defense leaves players wide open
Who is Ole's assistant? Can he put a scare into any of them? Though with modern footballers, they're paid too much to take criticism.
The modern day game is BLOOOOOODY BORING!
NO ONE WANTS TO SHOOT!!
PASS
PASS
PASS
PASS
PASS
PASS
PASS
How was Brandon Williams offside? He didn't look at the Luton back line?
The assistant is Michael Carrick. I could see him doing that, but will OGS be willing to delegate to him?
Luton is considered to be in East Anglia...we use to get their matches on Match of the Week
Newport will have a smoke as they have stung the Hornets 3-1. Newport will host the Toon or Morecambe and Wise next week
Baggies vs Bees has gone to spot kicks
I remember watching them on Match of the Week even though they seem more of a London area club.
STRUTH.... short corner then LONG cross.... straight out of bounds
Malik Wilks pulls one back for the Tigers , who trail 3-1 at the Hammers
Nah, it has to be a complete madman like a Pulis or Keane who you actually believe will assault you if you don't do what he says.
I'm totally in the Zidane camp. Bale didn't do nearly enough to make himself a first choice. And when he was criticized by Zidane, he flounced off for 4 weeks on the golf course while his flacks made excuses for him. If Zidane's assistant had wrapped a #1 driver around his head, monkey-boy might have responded.
When Ozil's sport-ute was attacked by those guys on motorcycles, I really wondered if it would turn out to be fed-up fans.
Penalty....to United
They first wanted a handball but now a foul
I think it was a bit of a dive
WOW! WHAT A BREAK FOR UNITED. N OT SURE WHAT THE DEFENDER FOR THE HATTERS WAS THINKING , BUT HE'S GIFTED US A PENALTY WITH A STONEWALL TRIP ON BRANDON WILLIAMS
I guess he touched him but he didn't have to go down
Mata steps up...one nil
Just before half time
NOT BLOODY GOOD ENOUGH
Stupid challenge sets up Mata for a pot-shot and he puts it away successfully.
GOAL !!! UNITED TAKE THE LEAVE WITH A WELL PLACED PENALTY AS SHEA WAS SENT THE WRONG WAY
I t was just a Mata of time before United were going to score
A minute of stoppage time
HT
Half way there but still very annoyed
United one up at the half and I agree with Dave that it's not good enough
Bees have beaten the Baggies 5-4 on pens
Baggies fifth saved and Bees win it on their 4th
Winner of the match at Kennilworth Road visit Deepdale or the Amex in the next round
Newport have beaten Watford 3-1
Teams coming out for the second half
Please play better!!
We are off
The second half is underway from Kenilworth Road
Hammers thrashing the Tigers 5-1. Haller with a pair of goals
Jammy Lenko with a pair of goals and a pair of assists
I don't understand why teams don't go for the kill early on and then coast instead of coasting and squeak by
There may a repeat of the Championship playoff final as the Bees will host the Cottagers next week if the Cottagers defeat Not a Big Club
The Hammers have thrashed the Tigers 5-1 and will be away to either Fleetwood Mac or the Toffees next week.
Not sure if it matters , but Wigan thrashed the Liverpool Academy 6-1 in the EFL Trophy
No change from United then... I guess OGS thinks it is good enough
Foul by Brandon Williams on Lua Lua , who led a Hatters break and deservedly booked
IF United win tonight and Brighton beat Preston...United would play two games in a row at the Amex in less than a week
First time pas s intended for Obi Wan leads to the small Mata of a United corner
Maguire heads the corner from Mata straight up into the air and easily caught by Shea
Kioso fouls Brandon Williams for a United free kick
I cannot stand it that Manchester United BORE the pants of me!!
Ighalo has a chance then saved off the line
OH! United nearly go two up. Ighalo led a break, had a shot block , then a cross from Mata was volleyed and cleared off the line
Then Matic forced a save from Shea
Former United trainee, Ryan Tunnicliffe cleared that volley off the line from his former trainee teammate, Lindy
Ighaol hasn't been given much of a chance since restart but he looks off the pace
Kioso booked for a foul on Obi Wan
Sorry, on Bailey
Agreed, Dave. Ighalo has definitely been out of sync
Lindy with a shot several feet over from the edge of the box
I am so fed up right now
That is why I am not commenting much
Shea with a near post kick save from VDB and it's a corner
It doesn't Mata as MAguire heads the corner in to the ground and it goes straight to Shea
Shinnie fouls Lindy. United take it short
This is against LUTON TOWN!!!
Harry Connick on for Jordan Clark Lee on for George Moncur as the Hatters make a double change
Lindy goes on a solo run on A United break , but he overruns it and Shea rushes out to gather
VDB, Ighalo and Mata
Bruno, Rash, and Greenwood on
OGS says subs do Mata as Greenwood comes on as does Bruno for VDB, and Rash for Ighalo. OGS with a triple change as something has to be done
Two times Luton almost score... great save and maybe another or cleared off the line
United break.... again....refuse to shoot
Hatters free kick and the Hatters nearly tie it up off the free kick. World class save from Dean Henderson then the rebound cleared off the line.
It was a great double save from Welsh international, Tom Lockyear. First a header well saved by Henderson then his rebound cleared off the line
Ridiculous short corner from United
Luton break off a horrendous United short corner
This would be heading to penalties if we weren't gifted a penalty
The Luton Hylton Inn booked for a foul on Danny Williams
GOAL !!! RASH PUTS UN ITED TWO UP OFF NICE ONE TOUCH PASSING. LINDY PASSED TO BRUNO AND HE PASSED TO RASH AS HE RAN THROUGH THE LUTON DEFENSE AND FINISHED PAST THE STRANDED SHEA
This one is pretty much decided and United could play at the AMEX twice in a Mata of days
It was actually Greenwood with the assist, not Bruno
Lindy with a shot deflected for corner as we enter stoppage time. Thankfully only a pair of the two Dave's minutes of that
Bruno goes on a long solo run on the break and passes to Rash , who shoots straight at Shea
GOAL !!! MASON GREENWOOD GOES ON A RUN INTO THE BOX AND SHOOTS INTO THE CORNER FROM AN ANGLE AND UNITED ARE THREE UP AND THROUGH
In between me going in the back...two subs score a goal each
And United win.... three nil but not impressive at all!
That's it as United win 0-3 , which really flatters them. Two of those were really late against a tired Luton side and the other a penalty gifted to them in the first half. United at PNE or the Seagulls next week
That's it fr me. While the match was far from enjoyable, the banter really was enjoyable. Great chatting and enjoy the rest of the day.
CHEERS!
Have a good rest of the week MUR
Talk to you on the weekend
TTFN
Hiya, chaps - sorry I missed out this afternoon. Congrats on the 0-3 win. I know that you were underwhelmed but a win is a win is a win.
