Lakenheath Old Boys
We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Afternoon, chaps - it's a dreary one here in Fred-town so I'm settling in to enjoy some of the good stuff. A blast of Led Zep to welcome the teams out at The Dell, as I like to think of it.
The teams for this evening:
Southampton: Forster, Walker-Peters, Bednarek, Stephens, Bertrand, Djenepo, Ward-Prowse, Diallo, Armstrong, Ings, Walcott. Subs: Long, Valery, Smallbone, Tella, Vokins, Ramsay, N’Lundulu, Lewis, Chauke.
Liverpool: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Henderson, Fabinho, Robertson, Wijnaldum, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Thiago, Salah, Firmino, Mane. Subs: Milner, Jones, Minamino, Shaqiri, Origi, Rhys Williams, Phillips, Kelleher, Neco Williams.
Referee: Andre Marriner.
Good afternoon, Bob. Lovely, sunny 80 degree weather. Sorry, that's probably not what you wanted to read
COME ON YOU SAINTS!
They're off from St. Mary's
And we're away in this one. I'm assuming that our Manc contingent wants a Soton win. I'm a neutral in this one.
Afternoon, David - how's your day been?
I am here
Saints now 7th by kicking off. If they defeat Pool they will be sixth behind Citeh and the Spuds on goal difference
Oh when the Saints!!
A GOAL...ONE NIL SAINTS!!
GOAL !!! DANNY INGS GIVES THE SAINTS THE LEAD AGAINST HIS FORMER CLUB, CHIPPING ALLISON
GOAL! What a strike from Danny Ings! Wow! That didn't take long. A bit of magic from the free kick straight off the training ground.
Welcome, Dave - great timing!
Nice lobbed free kick from JWP then lobbed over Allison by Danny Ings
Good afternoon, Dave. Perfect timing indeed
Liverpool are wearing a kit that only be described as the sort of sea-foam green that is best left for bridesmaids.
Doing well, Bob. Thank you for asking. How about you, Dave. How have you been?
Fraser Forster starting for Saints for the first time in ages because McCarthy tested positive for COVID
What a cracking start to this match!
Saints need four more goals to move ahead of Citeh on goals scored and Seven to move ahead of Spurs on goals scored
Doing okay, mate. It was a busy morning. We're not due back until February 4th, but the students certainly woke up this morning. I was inundated with student inquiries in the email this morning.
LOL, Bob. Great description of the Pool kit. They are playing like a bunch of bridesmaids
Colleges here are mainly online but for k-12 has given the students the option of online or returning to campus
I heard on the radio today that Southampton would have beaten seven reigning champs
If Liverpool were to drop points tonight, the title race would be wide open.
There have only been seven Premier League sides that have won the Title.... so they must have beaten each of them at least once!
If Liverpool drop anything today..... United beat Burnley on the Jan 12.... the top two clash at Anfield would be Second vs First
Fleetwood Mac vs the Tractor Boys postponed due to COVID in the Fleetwood squad. Joey Barton walks the plank as Fleetwood boss after three years in charge
Liverpool definitely showing some urgency now. Soton are just about holding on against a total onslaught.
5Live not on live coverage right now because of Boris' talking to the nation.... Lock Down again!
Scotland start tomorrow... footer goes on!
I think it would be great to keep sport going... keep them in a bubble for a month's worth of games
That would be a great scenario, Dave
Robertson picks up the evening's first yellow card.
Andy Robertson booked for a foul on behind on Scots teammate, Stu Armstrong after being dispossessed by him
Severe restrictions might go into March
I could se that based on the severity in the UK. There should be similar restrictions in the U.S.
TAA really looks poor when you look at the replay of the goal again and again. He won't want to include that on his highlight reel.
Long may it continue!!1
Great kick save by Fraser Forster from Salah then the offside flag is raised. Nice pass from Mane
Salah in on goal.... flagged late!
Stupid stuff...what happens if Salah was brought down and injured!
Not sure if anyone knows, but the FA stated that any team not being able to play their cup ties due to COVID will forfeit that cup tie , being eliminated from the competition
Liverpool had a strong spell after the early goal but in the last few minutes they have struggled to break through Southampton’s high press, managing a few passes in their own half before giving the ball away.
COME ON YOU SAINTS!!!
Wow - I didn't hear that, David. That's great. The same policy should be used in the Premiership.
Diempo with a shot.... should have kept his shot down!!
Danny Ings heads down a cross then passes back to Djnepo who shoots over
Southampton playing it around at the back...knock it off
Agreed. Toon, Citeh and the Cottagers would have thought twice about leaving the bubble
Premier League to continue amid lockdown measures
TAA called for a push on Djnepo and after being tackled by that player
Djnepo down for Saints. Not sure what caused the injury
If Liverpool lose this....United and City would be ahead of Liverpool if they win their one and two games in hand respectively
Nathan Bank Tella on for the injured Djnepo
Djenpo is subbed off early doors - Nathan Teller on for him.
WOW ! Pool in third. Who would have thought that?
If Nathan Tella played with Sean Penn it would be Penn and Tella
Mane with a poor effort
High and wide by Mane
Ryan Bertrand slide tackles Salah for a Pool corner. VAR agrees
Bobby Chompers with a header that lacks bite as he heads the free kick from Andy Robertson well wide
Damn it...just wide !!
Oh - Tella nearly added a second there. Curled one just wide.
OH! Nathan Tella curls a shot just wide
Oh - Forster spilled one there and Mane nearly profited. Meanwhile Ryan Bertrand was flattened by his keeper.
Salah called for a foul on Fraser Forster as he drops the ball then the rebound shot just wide. Looks like Forster ran into his own player
After today all matches will be on Plus through Monday then back to NBCSN a week from tomorrow
Oh - Soton playing some good stuff now.
OH! Pass from Danny Ings off Hendo for a Saints corner off a nice pass down the right from JWP
There are six games midweek next week
Corner from JWP headed away by Bobby Chompers . Into stoppage time.A Barber Shop Quartet of stoppage time minutes
Unfortunately, there is no coverage of the Crawley Town v. Leeds match on Sunday morning. I was looking forward to that one, too. There are several of our Academy kids who I was looking forward to watching.
Oh - big chance for Salah but he was always falling backward into the header. Put it over the top from Mane's cross.
OH! Salah should have tied it up for Pool. Nice cross from Mane off a nice long diagonal from TAA. His cross headed over by Salah
Odd that no coverage listed for any of the 8:30 matches on Sunday.
Salah with a shot blocked by Danny Ings for a Pool corner taken and goes out for a goal kick
Saints one up at the half thanks to an early chipped goal by former Pool player, Danny Ings
Half time
So far so good
I am off to pick up Kathy
LONG MAY THIS CONTINUE
Cheers, Dave. Great chatting.
The second half is underway from St. Mary's
COME ON YOPU SAINTS!
Second half starting up again. Liverpool have 45 minutes to rescue this one. A loss tonight would mean only two points gained from the festive period.
Andy Robertson wins a corner off of Kyle Walker-Peters
Long shot from Thiago blocked and cleared just in time to prevent another corner off the short corner
Agreed, Bob. Pool's last win was 0-7 at Selhurst Park. The goals have dried up since then
Big shout for a penalty; VAR check to come. Nothing given.
Shot from Wijnaldum off Jack Stephens for a corner. VAR checking for hand ball. VAr says corner
Great block by JWP from Bobby Chompers
LC semis the next two days after today. Spurs vs Bees tomorrow and Manc Derby on electoral college certification day. Both matches on Plus
Long range shot from Theo lands in Row H after Kyle Walker-Peters headed down a long ball from JWP
First Pool change as Shaquiri is on for former Saint , the Ox
Shaquiri on now for Winnie. I've always thought that he was a creative element that Liverpool are sometimes missing.
Great close range reflex block by Jack Stephens from Mane for a Pool corner. Fraser Forster with a slap away of the Pool corner
It's been a Pool onslaught the second half
Mane tries to buy a penalty but the ref is having none of it.
Alisson just woke up from a nap to clear his lines. He's been surplus to requirements for long stretches.
Soton have eleven men behind the ball at all times now. Are they Spurs in disguise?
Allison could have gone to the pub for a drink and come back without causing Pool any problems
Oh - Firmino got to the by-line there but Diallo was able to clear his cross out of danger.
Oh - now Firmino flashes a header wide of the mark. That was a chance.
Saint s have been Spursy the second half, but played good stuff the first half. Are they content to hold on to a 1-0 lead
Great block by Stu Armstrong from close range off a pass from Salah
First save of the match for Fraser Forster , which was a save of a tame shot from Mane off a pass from Andy Robertson
Shot from Thiago blocked by Jack Stephens then wide by TAA
Given the negative way that Soton are approaching this second half, I'm actually hoping that Liverpool come back to win this one.
Danny for Danny as N'Lundulu on for Ings. Pool counter with Milner on for TAA
Bednarek blocks a pass from Andy Robertson for a Pool corner
Long Saints clearance results in a foul from behind by Shaquiri on Nathan Tella
Time for some LUFC Academy action as Jamie Milner comes on for TAA.
TAA sulking on the bench for anything but a happy birthday. He gave away the ball 28 times this match which is really horrible
A defensive switch for the Saints as Yan Valery is on for Theo on the final roll of the dice for Ralphie
A crazy period of play now as Alisson rushes out of a goal and Soton nearly get a second. The game is really stretched now.
OH! Great Saints counter and Valery slid it past Allison who rushed out of his box but lacked the power in the shot as it was cleared off the line
Nasty foul by Mane on Kyle Walker-Peters
Liverpool have less than five minutes to find an equalizer now.
I had a feeling that Liverpool would struggle to defend their title and that's definitely proving to be the case, especially over the past couple of weeks.
HOLD ON YOU SAINTS!
You called it , Bob. They have struggled during the holiday period
Mane had a chance there just to nod that cross back into the danger area, but he decided to chest it down and then play a strange ball back across the area.
A trio of stoppage time minutes
It just makes the title race that much more exciting. There are a lot of teams, including United who will be in the mix, mainly because there isn't one team that is playing consistently well.
Bednarek clears for a late Pool corner
Corner now for Liverpool. This has to be the last chance. Alisson comes up for it!
Oh - Mane puts the corner over the bar!
OH! The corner from Andy Robertson headed just over by Mane and that may do it
I get home as Mane heads over the bar
BLOW UP REF
THAT'S IT!!
Southampton WIN!!!
UNITED COULD GO TOP!!
Mane wins a corner as we're thirty seconds past the allotted stoppage time off a short corner and it's over as Saints win 1-0
Ralph H is crying
Another corner won by Mane now. Played short - stupid! They can't even get it into the box!
It's all over! A big, big win for Soton and a real blow for Liverpool's title hopes.
Welcome back, Dave. United go top with a win vs Burnley next week
Onward we go to the League Cup semis tomorrow. First up - Spurs v. Brentford. I'll look forward to chatting with you.
United need at least a point at Turf Moor!!!
COME ON MAN U
COME ON MAN U
COME ON MAN U
Saints sixth , behind Citeh and Spurs on goal difference but Saints have played two more than Citeh and one more than Spurs
Not sure why there are only six midweek matches next week instead of ten
Cheers Bob and Dave. Great chatting and look forward to chatting tomorrow.
CHEERS!
