Footie at the End of a Long Week
I'm settling in at the end of a long workweek to enjoy some of the good stuff. It starts with an intriguing fixture at the Etihad with Man Citeh against West Ham. Pep's Citeh have been romping it in recent weeks, winning 19 on the trot. That said, Moyesy's Hammers have been teh most improved side in the league this season, rising from bottom half last season to a CL spot this season. Something's got to give. I'll likely take my usual grading break during the 10am hour when West Brom and Brighton fight out a relegation battle. Then I'm back with bells on for the tea time fixture between my beloved Leeds and Villa. We did them over at Villa Park 0-3 back in the fall, and I'd definitely take that result again today at Elland Road. The late one is another borefest between Newcastle and Wolves. Join me if you're around, eh?

Morning Bob
I am here for some the time
Thinking of you, MUR
I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles....they would be closer to United but we need City STOPPED!
We are off
We're all set for this one then. Teams go through their usual pre-match rituals and the Hammers kick us off.
Of course....everyone goes gaga over City....I HATE how they play
Andy Townsend is saying early on that, if a team is going to take on Citeh, they have to be bold and brave. That sounds more like Leeds than West Ham. Moyesy's outfit is all about defending and hitting sides on set pieces. That's not bold and brave.
Looks like West Ham sitting back too much already!
Citeh into their groove early doors, as predicted.
Morning, Dave - thanks for joining in. Yes, I'm thinking about David, too. Tough loss for Elizabeth but hopefully their family will find some peace in the coming days.
West Ham passing it inside their own box from goal kick... so stupid
Let's see if West Ham have the quality to break Citeh down. It doesn't look it so far.
We've got the Hammers a week Friday at their patch. They stole one from us in the fall; I'm hoping that we can do them over next week.
Ederson tries to play out to Fernandinho and Soucek lunges in and catches him. No card?
We have them coming up to Old Trafford too soon. I imagine Lingard won't be able to play in that one
They didn't really try to win in the Cup match
Haven't seen Lindy in this one at all. It's all a rearguard action. We at least took it to Citeh when we played them.
I really must be old school but I can't stand watching City. I don't think they are entertaining at all
I don't either. I only like Foden and KDB. The Belgian drives into the box there and tries to pull it back.
Peter D was about to scream the shooters name...in case it went in!
Such a boring way to commentate.
On 5Live and Talksport RADIO coverage, the commentators do sort of the same thing.... and we have no idea if the ball went in or not! They get all excited as if they are watching it as a fan! They are our eyes....describe...not scream
Bournemouth are hosting Watford right now.... last season... it was a Premier League match!
The Cherries gave Woodgate the job this week! Very strange that TH14 was rumored for the job....left Montreal.... and is not going to Dean Court
NOTHING has happened in this game!!
The Hammers go close...Lingard with a shot blocked but a header was won.... Antonio almost at the end of it
Hope a foul wasn't called... good...it wasn't
Totally agree with you. I was watching a Netflix documentary about Pele and it had the BBC footage of Mexico 70 with Kenneth Wolstoneholme commentary. A world of difference.
Agreed - Citeh are happy to choke the game to death with their possession and West Ham aren't good enough to get it off them.
West Ham have back to back attacking throw in on both sides of the pitch....they go backwards... BOTH times
I have to watch that Pele movie soon
How many fouls are called during the game for TOUCHING an opponent!!
The game is so wimpy these days... players go down for any touch....and a foul is called!
I feel sorry for my boys having to watch this sport I drew them to. It will only get worse
Maybe Jon is the smart one of the three.... doesn't give a monkeys about the game
23 minutes in...NO SHOTS on target... what is the point of the game!!
Typical Citeh - they won a free kick some thirty yards from goal and just put it back into play. Boring.
It's a good one - loads of interviews with his contemporaries. But it's sad to see the great man in a wheelchair now.
The Hammers go forward with the ball.....Drury gets all excited....A Hammer passes the ball directly to a City player!
The Guardian blog is saying that Moyes will be happy that Citeh haven't had a shot on goal yet. West Ham haven't either!
I'd be happier if my side had conceded a goal but had also created chances on goal at the other end. But that's just me.
5Live... ahead of NBC... I hate that crap too!
Bugger....City take the lead
GOAL! Citeh inevitably take the lead on the half hour mark. Great cross over from KDB and two or three players are cueing up at the back post for a header. Dias is the one who gets the touch.
1-0!
Now it's Torres romping through the West Ham midfield and having a go from distance. Randolph gathers.
Oh - Mahrez was nearly in there. Randolph clears.
Let's see if the Hammers can come out of their shells now that they've gone behind. The Moyes Plan A didn't work.
5Live reporter at this match has said that City have woken up...no they haven't !
Well, you have to admit that Citeh have had three chances on goal, including a goal, in the past five minutes.
League 2 standings.... how the points go
Top.....Cambridge 52 followed by 51, 50, 49, 48, 47, 47, 45, 44 and tenth spot is on 43
Oh - best move of the match from the Hammers. Antonio's shot nicks off the post.
DAMN IT.... The Hammers should have equalized!
Look what happens when you go forward with pace and width!!
Wow - that is compressed in L2. Hope that Cambridge can pop up to L1 again.
Lingard now has a shot.... ATTACK City!
I'll give it to them - they've had a good response. Yet, if they really want to challenge Citeh, they'll need to commit more players forward. They're playing with two defensive midfielders, of course, in Rice and Soucek. You won't win a match like that.
Cambridge have played more games than everyone else tho
Everyone is scared of City
They aren't that good defensively! They keep a lot of clean sheets but it is because teams don't attack!!
I notice on the bench that the Hammers don't have a striker to come on. Lanzini is about as close to that. Typical Moyesy.
YES!!!!!!!!
West Ham attack with pace.....and they score!!
GOAL! Wahay! The Hammers have leveled it up. Not sure who scored in the end, maybe Antonio on the line.
Please count....everyone is on
West Ham have to keep it going now, not sit back.
West Ham had a chance.... Antonio made the wrong run
Read on Instagram
Shelvey on playing against Rodrigo
Geez, can you just stand still for one minute!!
Half-time then: At least the Hammers have made Citeh work a bit here. I'll give that to them. Let's hope Moyesy doesn't have them back in their shells in the second half.
Half time... keep it going Hammers....at least stop this winning streak!
We're away in the second half. Citeh are warming up Foden, Sterling, Bernie Sanders and Gabby Jesus. Crikey!
Off for the second half.... COME ON YOU IRONS!
Lingard runs in the box.... nothing given. Is VAR taking a look
Never a foul.... got the ball
Randolph seems to have a problem and the reserve keeper David Martin, their #3, is getting warmed up.
West Ham's reserve keeper is crouched down...it was after a goal kick.
He is staying on for now
Come on West Ham....ATTACK
The Hammers first corner at least beat the first man....but went too long
Not a lot happening in this second half. Some changes to come, I suspect.
Antonio looks stranded up front alone. Nothing doing.
That year they are talking about West Ham with that great season...that was the season United came off their FA Cup win over Everton and started with 10 wins out of 10.... didn't lose for a few more weeks.....then fell off the edge of the earth and finished fourth! 30 points from 10 games....46 points from 32 games!!
Next season....started rough.... out goes Big Ron...in comes some Scot from Aberdeen....can't remember his name!
That was during my dark period when I'd moved to the States and didn't have any coverage of the footer. Everton were good then, too. Totally missed it.
Even worse.... Liverpool won their only Double that season
SHOOT THE BALL!!!
City break..... KDB's cross doesn't' find anyone
Fournals had a chance there to play his teammates in but didn't manufacture the right ball.
Then KDB races through but can't find a teammate.
Yup... Everton had lost the Cup Final to United the year before going for the Double....they came second this season and lost the Cup Final(their third in a row). They won the league again in 87
I remember reading The Times in the Corltand library for scores... I also followed on the BBC World Service
I'd love a West Ham win here.... I know they would be closer to United but so would City... also...Liverpool would be further out of the Top Four
I'm helping Kate out with brekkies - back in a tick.
So pathetic of NBC to put the TWO later games on the Cock!!
No reason for it!!
Cherries take the lead at home to the Hornets
DAMN....the ball was there to be passed....Lindy took too long
Bugger... Foden is on
GOAL! I'm just back to see John Stones rifle Citeh's second in.
Bugger!!
Stones gives City the lead back
I'm really arsed off that the Leeds match isn't on NBC.
West Ham will need to change things.
Ederson is down after that clash of bodies from the looping cross. Probably just wasting time.
I really HATE PEP!
Me too - especially his stupid clothing choices. Not keen on Moyesy though, either.
Good Morning, Bob and Dave. I woke up shortly after the start of the second half. Elizabeth, her sister, and I were talking about their dad.
I was happy when it was 1-1,feeling hopeful that we could cut into Citeh's lead
West Ham look gassed now.
Morning, David - I hope you and your family are doing well. We're really sorry for your loss. Please give Elizabeth a hug for us.
Why take off your striker!!
Come on Hammers.....just get the equalizer!
Morning David
Thanks, Bob. We're a little stunned, but doing alright. Yes I will. Thanks, Bob
Free kick chance.... good delivery please....it wasn't
Good Morning, Dave
Now comes the subbing.....grrrrrr
Gundogan comes off; fairly quiet side for him. Rodri on for him. Citeh have several players that look the same to me - Torres, Rodri, Dias.
Come on West Ham....stop just passing the ball sideways!!
4 added minutes
Corner...doesn't beat the first man.... such a waste!!
West Ham just didn't have any attacking options to go to after they went behind.
One more chance from a free kick....come on!!
ooooh... that could have gone in
BUGGER
Useless header
OH! Late Hammers header goes wide and that should do it
That's it
City win again
I HATE PEP
I'm off to shower, shave and do errands
I'll be back for Leeds
BUGGER! It' over and Citeh defeat the Hammers 2-1. Sadly, it's hard to see anyone , but them winning the Prem this season
Shame. I was hoping that West Ham could hang on, but Citeh have won a narrow one.
I'm the same as Dave - I'm off for a shower and then some grading. Back for the Leeds match at 12:30.
The 10am match between West Brom and Brighton has started. I'll take a dull draw in this one. Not watching. Off to do some grading.
Just checking in at half time of the WBA v. Brighton match. I was hoping for a draw, but the Baggies have had the better fortune so far. Brighton have missed a penalty and had a goal disallowed under extraordinary circumstances by Lee Mason, who'll need a long spell in a darkened room after all of that nonsense. 1-0 at the interval.
Crazy stuff.... should have had a goal... missed two pens.... I was playing against the Baggies keeper
The brouhaha over that disallowed goal for Brighton continues after the match, with the post-match interviews. Should have been a goal, IMHO. Shame that it ended 1-0.
Me too... Dunk said that he asked the ref if he could take it. The ref said yes....and then disallows it
Teams are coming out.... MOT blaring out
On to the big one today - Leeds hosting Villa. We sliced Villa up a treat at their patch in the fall, and I'd be delighted with a 3-0 win again today. My patented survival rubric says we should win this one. So, come on, you Whites! #MOT!
Team news out of ER:
Leeds United: Meslier, Llorente, Cooper, Struijk, Ayling, Klich, Dallas, Helder Costa, Roberts, Raphinha, Bamford.
Subs: Alioski, Casilla, Hernandez, Harrison, Davis, Gelhardt, Cresswell, Jenkins, Huggins.
Aston Villa: Martinez, Elmohamady, Konsa, Mings, Targett, Nakamba, McGinn, Traore, Ramsey, El Ghazi, Watkins.
Subs: Heaton, Taylor, Douglas Luiz, Trezeguet, Barkley, Engels, Sanson, Davis, Hayden.
Referee: Peter Bankes (Merseyside).
Why do the teams still stand in lines as if it were an international game.... so stupid!!
I miss when the teams ran out separately and went to the side of the field
throw your rubric away....it is past its date!!
Bielsa being all chummy with Villa's Martinez
Did you see the press complained to Bruce about him smiling with OGS after the match!
He yelled back at them! He said he's known him for 20 years and Ollie said the Toon played well
We are off
We're barely underway and Bamford nearly finds Raph!
ooooh....Leeds almost score inside 25 seconds!
Pep is already bugging me.... his fault for the two center backs standing inside the pen for a goal kick
First corner for the Villans now. Mark 'em up!
Corner to Villa and now they want a pen for a handball
Geez...it hit his arm... VAR won't look at it tho
Big appeal for handball on Luke. It definitely struck the arm, if unintentionally. Bit of a let off.
Thanks for joining me for this one, Dave!
Bugger! El Ghazi ghosts in and scores. Surely offside, no?
Ball in the net... and it counts! Bugger!!
Offside perhaps?
Bugger...he's on
VAR check complete and the goal counts - damn!
It looked well onside...and then they draw the lines and it looks closer
Shaky start for us here; come on!
Just got myself a few chocolate digestive biscuits... love em
They sell them at Walmart!
Shaky...especially after having a chance to take the lead inside 30 seconds
Patrick nearly in there but Mings and Martinez cleared up.
Leeds with a shot.... saved
Oh - Tyler was in there from Raphinha's blocked shot. Saved well by Martinez but Tyler should have buried it.
The usual furious pace for a Leeds match - I love it. Never get bored watching this lot.
Oh - El Ghazi pulls a good save out of Meslier. Tipped it over.
Shadow is at me for a walk...he wouldn't go with the earlier
Mings meets the corner but Patrick got in his way. Another corner.
Poor form from Shadow - enjoy your walkies!
Totally agree with on how they play....my lot don't.... CITY don't
El Ghazi with another shot on goal - Meslier saved. He's been a handful so far.
Oh - nice interplay there but Stu's shot was wide in the end.
Raphinha wins us a corner with a scintillating run.
United want Raphina
Oh - decent header there from Llorente. Martinez collected.
You can't have him!
I'm back for the match from ER. I see Villa one up. Sorry, Bob
Helder Costa off Targett as was a Helder with his hands
Oh - El Ghazi again with a go from distance. Knock it off!
El Gazhi goes close
OH! Long range shot from El Gazi not too far off
Well over by Tyler Roberts from just outside the box
welcome back MUR
Bugger! Tyler was in there again from a nice ball in. Snatched at it. He doesn't have his shooting boots on today.
Welcome back, David. Yeah - El Ghazi punked us early on. But we've had more than enough chances to get back into this one. I'm hopeful.
Thanks, Bob and Dave
Ah - too bad - if Patrick's ball had been better there, Raphinha was in!
Leeds blew that chance
Not a good pass by Bamford and them a bad touch by Raph
Get your fingers out
Oh - Raphinha ghosted in there on a Dallas ball but overran it under pressure from McGinn.
Leeds still in this match. Could go either based on what you stated
Another bad ball there from Dallas when it was easier to find Raphinha.
I think so, too. Villa aren't showing much ambition. They're playing the Dean Smith way.
Oh - Klich found his way to the by-line but the final ball was to no one.
Nice passing from Leeds ,. but the cross needs to Klich more than that last one
Luke with an interesting effort on the turn. Not quite.
Oh - decent ball in from Raph but Patrick couldn't get there in time.
Raphinha drifts into another good position and wins another corner. This one needs to fly in!
Raphinha wins a Leeds corner
That corner kick routine almost came off
OH! Powerful volley from Helder Costa blocked for a corner off the corner from Raphinha
Oh - Ollie Watkins streaks away from Tyler and nearly makes him pay.
Olly Watkins with a blocked shot on the break easily saved by Meslier
Nice free kick chance now for us.
Ayling got a flick on that one which has disturbed his man bun.
An Ayling header from a Leeds free kick straight to Martinez
I think you would like Ayling to be styled more like Shelvey. Sound about right?
Llorente is down now and really hurting. Then some retaliation as he gets up. I get it - he's been injured for a long time.
BLOODY HELL! Disgraceful from Llorente. Rolling around injured , but magically pops up. Really poor
Leeds man wants an Oscar there!
Nah - Luke's got his own style.
Really poor from Olly Watkins, but still
HT
Still plenty of time!
Villa one up at the half
Might be some changes to come given the scoreline.
There's the half-time whistle. We really should be level at the very least. Villa hit us early and then just sat back. We scored three in the second half against Southampton. That would do again today.
We're ready for the second half then - no changes to either side.
Second half underway from ER.
COME ON LEEDS! MOT!
Villa have an early free kick. They're trying to hit us early again.
We break and Helder is held back. Should be a card.
Raph will swing in another in-swinger for this one. Come on!
Missed the kick off but we are back underway
Come on LEEDS
Stu floats one toward goal and Martinez collects.
Interesting - I didn't realize that we were such a second half side.
Llorente did well to track Watkins there.
Helder wins a corner off Mings now - come on!
Interesting - Gjannni replaces Struijk. That's quite a reshuffle.
Ali about top come on to hopefully deliver the knockout punch to Villa as he replaces a player Struijched off the pitch
Villa really dropping deep now.
