Two Very Big Matches
Morning, chaps - it's Saturday again! The day is dominated by two very big matches. We kick off with a bang with Leicester v. Liverpool. The Reds are like a wounded animal these days; can they rise up wth a big away win today? It's all a bit rubbish at 10am then with Palace v. Burnley. But then we're back with a bang after lunch with City v. Spurs. It's Pep v. Mou - you can't miss that, eh? Join me, won't you?
259 Comments:
Right then, chaps - I've got a cuppa by my side as I settle in for the Foxes v. The Reds. This one has the feel of a very big match, with a CL slot on the line. After a really dodgy start to 2021, Liverpool really need a big win today.
The players out on the pitch now:
Leicester City: Schmeichel, Amartey, Evans, Soyuncu, Ricardo Pereira, Tielemans, Ndidi, Albrighton, Maddison, Barnes, Vardy.
Subs: Ward, Iheanacho, Perez, Under, Choudhury, Mendy, Fuchs, Thomas, Daley-Campbell.
Liverpool: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Kabak, Henderson, Robertson, Milner, Wijnaldum, Jones, Salah, Firmino, Mane.
Subs: Thiago, Adrian, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Tsimikas, Shaqiri, Rhys Williams, Phillips, Clarkson, Neco Williams.
Referee: Anthony Taylor (Cheshire).
The big news there is the presence at the heart of defense of Ozan Kabak, their new signing in from Schalke on loan, to replace the injured Fabinho. Wow!
And we're all set to go - Leicester to get us underway at Filbert Street.
Morning Boys
Not going to be around much today.... Kathy's birthday!
I'll try and join in when I can
Wow - an early Pele style effort from Maddison, noticing Alisson off the line. If that had gone over the Brazilian keeper, it would have been another big blow for him.
Morning, Dave - and happy birthday to Kathy! I hope that she's really up to really enjoying it.
Leicester are having trouble just hanging on to the ball so far.
Oh - Salah was in there but a poor touch let him down. Then he fell over trying to con the ref. Poor from the Egyptian.
Oh - nice effort from Vardy. He made his usual run off the shoulder and then tried a flick with the outside of his boot to loop over Alisson. Not quite.
Salah is down looking for another pen. He really should get a card from Anthony Taylor at this point. That was blatant cheating.
Four corners already conceded by the home side - you can see already what their game plan is.
Oh - Salah with another chance. Volleyed it well wide.
Oh dear - LUFC Academy has a problem and seems to be done for the day. Thiago is replacing him and Jurgen's woes continue.
Oh - Salah was away again from a pass by TAA. He dinked it past Kasper but Mane couldn't quite get onto it.
Half way into this first half and Liverpool are clearly the dominant side. It's incredible that Leicester are third, playing like this at home. They should be embarrassed.
Curtis Jones picks up the first yellow of the match as Leicester try to break through Harvey Barnes.
Oh - Salah slides one through to Bobby Chompers but Kasper stands up to him well.
It's all a Red wave at this point - Leicester are completely overwhelmed.
Now Thiago wins a decent free kick chance.
Leicester try to break from the failed free kick routine and finally mount enough of an attack to win their first corner.
Oh - great chance for Vardy there from Barnes' cross. But straight at Alisson.
Oh - Robertson comes through on the overlap and his deflected effort just goes wide.
Oh - Vardy was through there from the flick on by Barnes. But he hits the bar!
Jonny Evans upends Mane and picks up a yellow. Tasty free kick range here for the Reds.
This will be the last chance of the half - TAA hits it straight into the wall.
Oh - Vardy was in again but Alisson stood up really well to him. That will be a confidence booster.
The half-time whistle goes and it's 0-0. Liverpool were the dominant side but Leicester had their chances on the break.
Good morning, Bob. I slept through most of the first half, but am now ready to join you. Hope I didn't miss much
How have you been? Overcast, drizzly, and chilly here since Thursday
The second half is underway at the KP
Morning, David - how are you? Great to have you on board for this second half.
In the Championship Forest vs the Cherries is 0-0 at the half
In a Lancashire Derby PNE won 1-2 at Ewood Park yesterday
Evans appears to still be limping at the start of the half; I wonder how long he'll be able to continue.
Thanks, Bob. Another crazy week due to the bank. Long story to explain why, but we're progressing slowly but surely. Unusually cold here since Thursday
I'm not sure that a draw is sufficient for the Reds here - they'll want all three points.
Free kick from the Fourth President headed away then the return cross from the left gathered by Allison at the feet of Vardy
I'm sorry to hear that it's been such a hassle. It was a very busy first full week of teaching but I emerged unscathed. Missed all of the Cup action, though, including that thriller at Goodison.
A Poo win is better for the two Daves because both teams would be on 43 points. A draw leaves the Foxes on 44 points
Glad you had a good first full week back. You should watch the cup tie. Strange to say but both teams played entertaining football and Siggy put on a master class as he can when he's at his best. I think you can watch a replay
A draw is definitely preferable for you lot, that's for sure.
Even though Melanie is only a few hours from us, for the next five days she will experience Fred Town type weather in terms of the temps and wind chill
Our two Uniteds will light up Valentine's Day morning this weekend. Should be a very romantic affair!
Woodie became caretaker manager of the Cherries about ten days ago, replacing Jason Tindall, who was sacked. Not sure if you knew
Your United yes, but ours anything but since we're going to Fat Sam's place. Not exactly what I call romance, LOL!
Ndidi heads a corner wide at the near post. He's unhappy about not getting another corner Ndidied
GOAL! Salah finally breaks the deadlock!
GOAL !!! SALALH GIVES POOL THE LEAD. NICE FINISH
Lovely footwork by Bobby Chompers there to set up the Egyptian who just had to slot home.
0-1 Reds!
Both sides on 43 points now with Liverpool in third now on GD.
Poor clearance from Tielemans went straight to TAA. He went on a run and had a shot blocked by Soyuncu, then hustled to get the ball and passed to Bobby Chompers , who laid back a clever back heel and Salah scored with a well placed left footed shot from the edge of the box
Both sides now on 43 points, a pair of points behind United
Ozan Kabak gets a booking on his Pool debut for obstruction on Harvey Barnes
Lots of matches down the divisions cancelled due to frozen pitches. All Prem matches on
Ricardo goes on a solo run then is tackled by Kabak for a Foxes corner
The Ox on for Curtis Jones , which should give Pool more width
The Ox coming on for Curtis Jones now.
Leicester pick up a dangerous free kick now with Harvey Barnes being felled on the edge of the box.
VAR check for a penalty. It seemed outside the box for my taste.
A combination of TAA and Thiago bring down Harvey Barnes about a n inch outside the box , facing the touchline. VAR checking to see if it's a penalty
Free kick rather than a penalty.
VAR agrees that it's outside the box
GOAL! Barnes hits one low and it goes all the way through past Alisson.
No - it's been chalked off for offside. Amarti was interfering with Alisson's line of sight.
GOAL !!! DESPITE THE POOR ANGLE, THE FOURTH PRESIDENT CURLS IN THE FREE KICKTHROIGH A CROWD OF PLAYERS FOR A GOAL! DISALLOWED FOR OFFSIDE. NOT SURE WHY AS IT TOOK A NICK OFF A POOL PLAYER AND NONE OF THE FOXES PLAYERS WERE ACTIVE
It does count and credited to the Fourth President as it's 1-1
It is a goal after that VAR check. Maddison has his goal after all.
1-1!
The two teams swap positions and the Foxes back in third a point behind United. Looking for another Pool goal
Will there be a winner here?
GOAL! Leicester may have found a winner! A terrible calamity for Alisson and Kabak!
2-1!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
GOAL !!! ALLISON WITH A REPEAT OF THE HOWELRS VS CITEH. LONG BALL FROM TIELEMANS AND ALISON HAD NO BUYSINESS RUSHING MILES OUTSIDE HIS BOX AS HE MISS KICKED THE BALL STRAIGHT OT VARDY AND HE REAN UNCHALLENGED FOR AN EASY SCORE IN AN EMPTY NET. FOXES LEAD 2-1
Foxes now second , a point behind United
Good morning, Dave. Hope you're laughing at Allison and not the score, LOL!
Chris Hughton vs Woodie still 0-0 in the Championship
GOL !!! HARVEY BARNES GIVES THE FOXES A 3-1 LEAD AS COLLAPSE LIKE THEY DID LAST WEEK VS CITEH
Shaquiri on for Wijnaldum in a like for like switch while a defensive change from the Brodge as Choudhry on for Tielemans
Back to the goal and more individual basic Pool errors. A pass was coughed up at the halfway line then Ndidi found Harvey Barnes with a slide rule pass and he got behind the Pool defense to score with a well placed finish past Allison
Pool out scored 7-2 in the past two matches if you count this one
A quintet of stoppage time minutes
Pool showing no urgency . Their heavy metal football is more like square dancing
Back with a breakfast sandwich and banana for Brekkies.
It's over and the Foxes came from behind to win 3-1
Forest vs Cherries finished 0-0
Back with a breakfast sandwich and banana for Brekkies.
That's a bad loss for Liverpool - they'll be lucky to stop in the top four now.
Kate is cock-a-hoop over that Leicester win, as she's picked them for the title. Who knows - it could help?
I didn't think the Foxes would be in the title race, but kudos to Kate. I still think Citeh is in the driver's seat, but stranger things have happened in previous seasons.
Next is Palace vs Burnley on NBCSN, which isn't exactly a classic, but you never know. They're off from Selhurst park
Burnley one up at Selhurst Park. Routine cross horribly cleared by Scott Dann, and Gudmiunsson with his back to goal, turned 180 degrees and scored with a well placed finish
GOAL !!!BURNLEY GOES TWO UP
More comic book defending from Palace. Long clearance from Guaita headed on by Erik Pieters to Gudmunsson, and he passed to J Rod whose shot came off Scott Dann for a Burnley corner. The corner was headed in by J Rod in a crowd of players , but every Palace player stood ball watching
Burnley now up two places to fifteenth and eleven points clear of the drop zone. Hard to see them being relegated
Blimey! I'm just back from a refreshing shower and have noticed that Burnley are already 0-2 up!
I'll be grading some papers during this one and just checking in from time to time. I'll be back full time for the big one at 12:30.
Hornets one up vs Bristol City , which is not idle gossip. Hornets now fourth
Cheers, Bob. Have fun. Look forward to chatting for the lunch time match
Canaries take the lead vs the Potters. Canaries now replace the Bee son top by a point. Bees host Barnsley tomorrow
Rams take the lead vs the Teesiders. Rams out of the drop zone . Replaced by Brum and now a pair of points clear
Reading Railroad in the lead vs the Evil Lions, but stay fifth
Hornets two up vs Bristol Coty. That's not idle gossip
Goals in the L1 matches that survived the weather.
Charlton vs Gils is 1-1
Argyle Sweater on tp vs Fleetwood Mac
Black Cats two up vs Donny Osmond and now replace Charlton in the last playoff spot
Only two L2 matches today.
Bolton takes the lead vs Stevenage and move up to nosebleed territory, thirteenth place.
In an East Anglian Derby Cambridge vs Southend is still 0-0
Terriers take the lead vs doomed Wycombe
Nice kick save by Nick Pope from Beneteke.
Luton takes the lead at St. Andrews. Brum now second from bottom, a point from safety.
Cardiff takes the lead vs Coventry. Coventry on three points from safety while Cardiff up to seventh, but half a dozen points outside a playoff spot
Gils take a 1-2 lead at Charlton
Black Cats three up vs Donny Osmond
Hornets now up by a Barber Shop Quartet without reply. That's not idle gossip
Rams two up vs the Teesiders
Cardiff two up vs Coventry
Nearly half-time now - Burnley still two goals up on Palace. They looked really flat against us in mid-week and they're doing it again at home today.
Rangers takes the lead vs Killie. If Stevie G's lads win then they will only need a Barber Shop Quartet of wins to clinch the SPL title
Welcome back, Bob. Since the second goal, little has happened
George Hamilton entered the match bottom, but is three up at Motherwell. Now in a playoff spot, ahead of Ross County on goal difference, and a point behind Killie. Ross vs Hibs postponed, presumably due to the weather
Teesiders pull one back, but trail the Rams 2-1
Terriers two up vs doomed Wycombe
Canaries two up vs the Potters
A minute of stoppage time at Selhurst Park
Burnley two up at the half. Both goals scored early on and due to horrible Palace defending
The second half is underway from Selhurst Park
GOAL !!!MATTY LOWTON PUTS BURNLEY THREE UP
The goal started with a what looked a soft foul by PVA on J Rod. The long free kick from Ashley Westwood was headed out and after a bout of had and volley tennis, Matty Lowton went on a rare solo run from the halfway line and passed to J Rod , who was in the D and his return pass was spectacularly volleyed in by Lowton
Free header from Beneteke headed into the ground and straight to Nick Pope
Cardiff goes three up vs Coventry while Wycombe scores at the Terriers to pull it back to 2-1
Donny Osmond scores at the SOL , but trails 3-1
Black Cats score and now leads Donny Osmond 4-1
Charlton scores to make it Desmond vs the Gils
Hornets FIVE UP vs Bristol City. That's not idle gossip
Powerful long range shot from Ashley Barnes straight to Guaita off another poor Palace clearance
Another Burnley chance and a shot from Ashley Westwood just over as Burnley is finding a lot of joy down the left
Townsend on for Bat Boy, who looks none too pleased, but he was toothless in attack. What does he expect?
Potters score at CR, but trail 2-1
Canaries restore their two goal advantage as they now lead 3-1
J Rod just off target from just outside the box off a run and pass from Matty Lowton
Robbie Brady on for Gudmunsson
Wycombe have come from tow down to make it Desmond at the Terriers , but are still bottom by quite a bit
Mateta on for Beneteke for his home debut for Palace
Clos range shot from Townsend blasted well over off a nice cross
Hi David - just checking in around hte 80th minute mark. I'm shocked to see that Burnley are 0-3 up now through a second half goal by Matty Lowton. Palace must have been really toothless today, according to your comments.
Play stopped due to what looks like a Burnley player down due to concussion
Welcome back, Bob. You are correct about Palace
Canaries now lead the Potters 4-1
Rock bottom Richard Burton takes the lead at Northants, But Richard and Liz just a pair of points from safety. Northants move into the drop zone and second from bottom
Evil Lions tie it up at the Mad Stad
Fake Dons take the lead at the KC. Tigers still second
After about a five minute stoppage, Kevin Long on for Ben Mee who goes off on a stretcher
Coventry scores a consolation goal at Cardiff. Now 3-1
Another stoppage as Erik Pieters is down. He's up and there should be a fair amount of stoppage time for a match that's done and dusted
Into stoppage time at Selhurst park. Dave's lucky seven minutes of that
Evil Lions have come from behind to lead 1-2 at the Mad Stad
Gils take a late 2-3 lead at Charlton
Hornets now half a dozen up vs Bristol City. That's not idle gossip
It's over at Selhurst Park and Burnley defeat a flat Palace side 0-3
Rock bottom Richard Burton takes a 0-2 lead at Northants in a relegation six pointer
Next is Citeh vs the Spuds on NBC at 12:30. Steve will not be pleased that the two Dave's will be rooting for the Spuds, but we can't afford for Citeh to keep adding to their points tally
I'm back for the big one now - I'm sure that you're hoping for a Spurs win today. I'm entirely neutral on this one. I just want to see goals.
Here is the team news:
Manchester City: Ederson, Joao Cancelo, Stones, Laporte, Zinchenko, Silva, Rodri, Gundogan, Sterling, Gabriel Jesus, Foden.
Subs: Walker, Dias, Aguero, Steffen, Torres, Mendy, Mahrez, Garcia, Doyle.
Tottenham Hotspur: Lloris, Tanganga, Sanchez, Dier, Davies, Ndombele, Hojbjerg, Lamela, Lucas Moura, Son, Kane.
Subs: Doherty, Alderweireld, Winks, Bale, Hart, Sissoko, Alli, Bergwijn, Vinicius.
Referee: Paul Tierney (Lancashire).
Welcome back, Bob. Yes rooting for the Spuds
Citeh have won fifteen consecutive matches in all competitions, breaking the top flight record set be PNE in the 1891-92 season
NBC going to wait till kickoff top go to the match. Their coverage has declined over the years
Pep and Jose greet each other as Pep kept Jose waiting. Fairly respectful to each other
They're off from the Etihad
Not hopeful off a Spuds win because they have been guilty of some real Dier defending
Phil Foden wins a corner off of Hoy Berg off one touch passing
Kate is wondering if there is an update on Ben Mee's injury. She's quite concerned. Like Arsene Wenger, I didn't see the incident. Do you know what happened?
The corner from Foden headed well over by Rodri at the near post
There was n accidental collision between Ben Mee and Jordan Ayew. Ben Mee was stretchered off and they said he was conscious. That's all I really knew.
Not surprisingly, Citeh are in total control right from the start. As usual, Jose's team is just trying to absorb the pressure.
LOL, mate. You will learn quite a bit from the Wenger management school!
Jose's team will have to be like the best ever made sponges
Thanks for the update on Ben Mee - Kate is relieved to hear that he's conscious. She was alarmed by the reaction from the physios.
You're welcome . I don't blame Kate. It did seem to take a while for some reason.
I missed the earlier interview, but Rebecca Lowe said that Klopp conceded the title today. I agree that their chances are done and dusted.
I'm not surprised - Jurgen and co. will have to focus on the Champions League spots now.
Laporte upends Harry Kane and gives away a dangerous free kick now.
A rare Spurs break and Harry Kane and Abel to win a free kick off La Porte, who may have opened the door for Spurs
Oh - Harry Kane rattles one off the angle! Ederson was beaten!
OH! Harry Kane and NOT Abel to score as his curling free kick crashes off the upright . He was helped by the wall that broke apart
Penalty to Citeh! Hojberg caught Gundogan there. Seemed a bit soft to me. Surely a VAR check on it.
PENALTY CITEH! HOY BERG CALLED FOR A TRIP ON GUNDOGAN OFF A PASS FROM JESUS. I DIDN'T THINK THAT WAS A PENALTY. VAR MAY OVERTURN THIS
So much for that. VAR almost instantly says it is a penalty
Bizarrely, Ederson seemed to fancy taking the penalty. He's been pushed away by Bernie Sanders.
Rodri to take. That's a surprise
Oh - Rodri steps up and hammers it to the left. Lloris got to it but couldn't keep it out.
1-0 Citeh!
GOAL !!! RODRI GIVES CITHE THE LEAD FROM THE SPOT DESPITE LLORIS GETTING A HAND TO IT. HE REALLY SHOULD HAVE SAVED IT
Citeh now seven clear at the top, but United can narrow the deficit to five with a win at the Hawthorns. It can be further narrowed if Spurs score. They will be forced to come out of their shell
Tanganga wins a Spurs free kick
Poor free kick from Number One Son, who was anything but with that poor free kick
According to the Guardian blog, there is total chaos in the Trump impeachment trial. Everything seemed to be heading for a quick vote today, but now a majority of Senators including five Republicans have voted to call witnesses. That will keep the whole drama going for some time.
Nasty foul by Lamela on Jesus. I've seen red given for those , but nothing given
That's ridiculous. This trial/circus needs to end soon , so Congress can focus on COVID and the economy
Thanks for the update, Bob
Weekend at Bernie's booked for a foul on Ben Davies. How was that worse than the one by Lamela on Jesus?
I agree with you, mate. They've come back from lunch and have had a change of heart. They're on to closing arguments and a vote on conviction is anticipated later today.
Jesus tackle s Lamela deep in the Spurs half then Lamela fouls him
Lamela and Jesus are having a bit of argybargy now.
Thanks for the update. Sounds like common sense prevailed
Oh - Citeh go close to a second there. Sterling gets behind the defender and finds Gundogan in the middle. His effort is blocked and then Jesus rasps one over the top.
Nice Citeh attack. Sterling played a one then beat Ben Davies for pace then his pass went to Gundogan, whose close range shot was well blocked by Davinson Sanchez, the Jesus shot inches over
