Up Early for The Arse
A very good Saturday morning, boys! I'm settling to watch some good stuff this morning after having completed my first week of the semester. We start this morning with Villa v. Arsenal, both sides looking for a win to launch them into the top half. Then there are a couple of rubbish matches at 10am EST - Burnley v. Brighton and Southampton v. Newcastle. It's a London derby between Fulham and West Ham on NBC at 12:30 and finally Man Utd v. Everton as the late afternoon treat. Join me for all the fun today, won't you?

The teams are out at Villa Park:
Aston Villa: Martinez, Cash, Konsa, Mings, Targett, Nakamba, McGinn, Traore, Barkley, Grealish, Watkins.
Subs: Heaton, Douglas Luiz, Trezeguet, El Ghazi, Engels, Sanson, Elmohamady, Davis, Ramsey.
Arsenal: Ryan, Bellerin, Holding, Gabriel, Cedric, Partey, Xhaka, Saka, Smith-Rowe, Pepe, Lacazette.
Subs: Ceballos, Odegaard, Willian, Runarsson, Aubameyang, Chambers, Pablo Mari, Elneny, Martinelli.
Referee: Chris Kavanagh (Lancashire).
We're set to go now, Villa in their traditional claret and blue and Arsenal in whatever they're wearing as a third strip.
GOAL! Ollie Watkins takes advantage of an early defensive slip and a good run and cross by Traore.
1-0 Villa!
Nasty clash of heads there - both players seem to be okay to resume.
Grealish jinks through and wins a corner for his efforts. Villa have definitely started with purpose here.
Oh - Laca was away there with a 3 on 2. But he chose the wrong option in the end.
Nice interchange between Laca and Saka there. Nearly in. Arsenal starting to put some moves together, as Villa are dropping off.
Hi Bob
I am not going to be able to join in much again. Everything here is fine I am busy taking care of the house, the dog and the missus
I'll try and drop in now and again
Morning, Dave - I hope everything's going okay this morning in Casa Nocito.
Free kick now for the Arsenal. Xhaka is over it. He hits it and Martinez does really well to claw it out!
Oh - from the corner a nice ball is chipped in and Holding, who had stayed up for it, put his header wide.
Konsa is in trouble here - could be a red!
No - the ref has pulled out a yellow, as there might have been a covering defender.
First half winding down now. Villa have predictably sat back after scoring early and have tried to absorb the inevitable Arsenal pressure.
Traore picks up a silly yellow card for encroachment at the free kick.
Oh - Pepe was in there from the second restart but he blasted well wide.
Half-time - Not really much to write home about, this one. The only goal came in the first minute and then Villa haven't tried to play since then.
Good morning, Bob and Dave. Had a bit of a late lie in. How is everyone . How was the first half?
Villa now eighth with that lead
Just saw that it was an early goal from Olly Watkins
I'm back for the second half with a fresh cuppa. It's still a match for Arsenal to chase but I would hope that a self-respecting Premier League side would try to do more at home than Villa have.
No changes for either side yet.
Morning, David - great to have you on board this morning. How's your week been?
Into the second half with some morning coffee
Good morning, Bob. It's been a bit of a crazy week. How was the start of the new semester?
Villa trying to do what they did in hte first half - punk Arsenal from the kick off. Didn't work this time, Ross Barkley scuffing his effort.
Better from Villa now - Ollie Watkins with a raking right footed shot. Beaten away by Matty Ryan.
Nice long range save by Matty Ryan from Olly Watkins. God start to his gunners career for the Aussie former Seagulls keeper
Not too far wide from Pepe. Not sure if that was meant as a cross or a shot
Coventry vs the Hornets is 0-0 early in the second half with the Hornets now fourth
OH! Matty Ryan did well to push away a powerful long range shot from John McGinn
Tyrone Mings blocks from Smith-Rowe, not at Saville Rowe, but Villa Park
Comfortable save by former Gunners keeper Martinez, from Bellerin
This is a better contest now - chances at both ends.
That great Saka player is now on Targett for a corner with a shot that was blocked
How was the first half? Did I miss much?
Aubama comes on for added firepower now.
I missed that substitution, but I read about it in La Cazette. Aubama on in a like for like switch
Did you read about that change or did you see it?
Sorry to hear that it was a crazy week. Mine was fairly routine. I started my semester with a long day on Thursday. The students are real troopers through this pandemic.
Thanks, Bob. Glad you're off to a great start. The students that are prevailing sure are troopers.
More substitutions now - Cedric, who's mistake led to the only goal, is off and the new boy Odegaard is on.
An attacking switch for the Gunners as Odegaard on for Cedric the Entertainer, who feels like doing anything but entertaining. Villa bring on Trezeguet for Bernie Traore. Trezeguet a more out and out striker
Based on what you said, Bob. Steve is not finding Cedric to be the entertainer
Oh - Saka with a great cross but Aubama jumped too early and couldn't direct his header on target.
Cedric was hardly the Entertainer today; the Gunners are really missing Kieran Tierney in that role right now.
I agree. Tierney adds more to the attack. Cedric a more out and out defender. Tierney brings that extra bit of excitement to the team
Thomas Partey is down for treatment now and Willian is preparing to come on. Might as well - they don't really need a water carrier right now.
I'm disappointed that Arteta didn't shuffle the deck at half time.
Willian on for Partey, which looks a more attacking switch. He really didn't do anything to put Steve in a partying mood
I didn't see the first half, but guess that he felt with it at 1-0 he would give them fifteen minutes to see what they could do. That's my best guess given that I missed the first half
Young Jacob Ramsey on for Ross Barkley, who looks none too pleased at being replaced
I guess this and the late match are the big one for today. The middle ones don't look that great
French toast and banana for brekkies now.
Matty Ryan did well to push away a shot from Jack Grealish
WOW ! That 's a great breakfast
The replay shows that Dean Smith saw Ross Barkley throw a tantrum at being subbed. Not great considering he's only on a season loan
OH! Inches wide from Jack Grealish. Villa nearly went two up
OH! Odegaard with a stinky Odor as that shot went well over off a some great one touch passing. Best Gunners move of the half
Oh - that was the hero moment for Odegaard. Leaning back and always blasting over.
Great save by Matty Ryan from Olly Watkins then the ball is high up and a header from Jacob Ramsey headed off the line, but it would not have counted due to a foul on Ryan after the save
Olly Watkins has been in form the past few matches. He's starting to adjust to the Prem
All the Villa chances are falling to Watkins. He's scored the one that counted but he's also missed three or four.
Jacob Ramsey straight to Martinez off a solo run
Arteta is pulling his hair out at this display, but he's got no one but himself to blame. He started out with two defensive middies - Xhaka and Partey - and stuck with them for 70 minutes despite needing a goal.
A quintet of stoppage time minutes
Agreed, Bob. Too many managers play that tactic without suuccess.
Next is Toon vs Saints on NBCSN and on the Cock Burnley vs Seagulls where the winner would form a quite a gap from the drop zone
Grealish down and play stops with ten seconds left. I think it's just time wasting by Grealish
Grealish talks himself into the book
It's over and Villa win 1-0 thanks to a second minute goal from Olly Watkins
I'm off for walkies on a foggy morning ahead of the 10 AM matches
A really disappointing match there to start the day. Let's hope it will get better. Villa up to 8th with 35 points, they're entire tally from last season when they barely stayed up. Arsenal stuck in 10th on 31.
Right then - I'm going to hop in the shower to freshen up. I'm likely to be in and out until the United match at 3pm. Just giving you a heads-up so that you're not on the blog on your own. It seems like Dave is out of commission taking care of his loved ones today.
Cheers, Bob. Thank you and look forward to chatting during the late match
I'm back after a refreshing shower to check in with the 10am kickoffs. We've got Newcastle v. Southampton on the box. I'll take a draw in that one, which would take Southampton above Leeds but would keep Newcastle mired in the muck of relegation.
And I'll also take a draw in the relegation fight between Brighton and Burnley. There is already enough of a gap between them and the bottom three - no need for them to do much more right now.
Hiya Boys
I am about for a bit. Just got back from a walk with Shad and he's laying down now so I have a bit of a rest
On Loan Gunner Willock gives the Magpies the lead
Nasty tackle by Mee...just outside the box...yellow card
Forest take the lead at Wycombe
Two Nil Toon
Benderak.... with the OG!
He scored one at OT midweek, got a red card, got it rescinded.... scores again from an Almiron shot
I'm back at the half hour mark just in time to see the Magpies fire in their second goal. New acquisition from Arsenal Joe Willock opened the scoring in the 16th minute and Almiron just fired in a deflected effort for 2-0.
Welcome back, Dave - I hope that the day is going well. I'm in and out during these two rubbishy matches. I'll be around live for the United match later on.
Birmingham take lead vs manageress Bournemouith
I understand
Things are going ok....but each day is like Groundhog Day
Saints get a goal back
Liverpool man scores on his debut....just like Willock....what a pillock
Great finish
GOAL! Mini Me fires in Southampton's response to that second goal from a tight angle!
2-1!
I'll bet, mate. Hang in there!
At least the Saints have stopped the rot!
The relegation dogfight between Burnley and Brighton is at 0-0 - that suits me just fine.
The relegation dogfight between Burnley and Brighton is at 0-0 - that suits me just fine.
Thanks
I think 35 points will be safe this season....you're almost there already
I guess the goal is going to Almiron....and not the OG
Joelinton on for Wilson
Brighton take the lead..... Dunk heads in a corner
Cherries tie it up
Ex Leeds man Jonathan Woodgate was hired as assistant coach at Dean Court on Monday.... the manager was fired a couple days later....he's in charge
Brentford tie it up at Boro....they have only been beaten the Cups to Spurs and Leicester since October
Burnley should have scored... it was offside anyway
United to win by 4
City lost by 3
United are top!
Top of the table Cambridge take the lead at Barrow
Southcoast derby still scoreless at Fratton Park as Pompey host Plymouth
Ipswich take the lead at home to Bpool
They have been stinking it up!
HT at Turf Moor and the might Seagulls winning again after their last two wins versus Spurs and Liverpool
GOAL...modern day patheticness at the back... Almiron takes it away from Bertrand....3-1
Back at the stroke of half time to see Almiron knock in his second. A real gift from the Saints' defense.
3-1!
Not happy to see that Dunk goal for Brighton. The scores are not going my way at this point.
Last kick of the half at SJP.... so ridiculous to put yourself at risk at the back....but...it is how you're supposed to play.... BLOODY PEP!
What about Arsenal this morning.... 95th minute.... lucky free kick given..... didn't put it in the box.... passed passed passed... final whistle!! MADNESS
BLOODY PEP
It was the keeper's fault just as much as Bertrand
I am skipping out again.... take care if I don't rejoin
TTFN
Back for the second half and Shelvey with a stray touch wide off nice work form Joe Willock and Sty. Max
Isaac Hayden called for a foul on Che Addams in a promising position for a free kick
Second halfs have started now - I'm hoping that at the very least Burnley can get back into this one. Not sure Soton can do anything about the two-goal deficit.
GOAL !!! WHAT A FREE KICK FROM JWP AND HE PULLS IT BACK TO 3-2 AS HE BENT IT LIKE BECKHAM
Goal! Well - so much for that - JWP with a peach of a free kick to make it 3-2! Come on, the Saints!
Game on at SJP. This is turning out to be quite a match
It's just got better! Jeff Hendrick has gone for a shirt tug and he's off for a second yellow!
It goes from bad to worse for the Toon on a sour note as Jeff Hendrick sent off for a second yellow
Welcome back, David!
In terms of the table The results may be good in one way. It's looking more and more like the bottom three are becoming all but decided as they are getting further and further adrift of everyone else
Cheers, Bob. Wasn't sure if everyone would be back or not. I did see all the goals
Gudmunsson ties it up for Burnley vs the Seagulls which may not mean that much over the course of the season
QPR takes the lead vs Blackburn
Forest go two up at all but doomed Wycombe. Glenn Murray with both goals. This one from the spot
Donny Osmond leads Oxford 3-1 . Donny now third , a point behind the Tigers , who are being held 0-0 at rock bottom Richard Burton. He must be that way die to the divorce
Tractor Boys two up vs the Tangerines
Black Cats tie it up at the Fake Dons. Now Desmond a nd a pair of points behind Charlton, who is in the last playoff spot
I agree with you - there seems to be a clump of teams just below the mid-point with upper 20s and another clump a little farther down in the mid to low 20s. The bottom three are really in danger of getting cut adrift.
Ten man Newport takes the lead vs Grimsby. Newport, fifth a point outside automatic promotion while Grimsby in a relegation spot
Cherries have come from behind to lead Brum 2-1. Brum in the drop zone for the first time this season. They are behind the Rams by slight goal difference. Rams at Barnsley postponed due to a waterlogged pitch
Bees have come from behind to lead 1-2 at the Riverside. Bees now second , a point behind the Canaries and a point ahead of the Swans. Swans defeated Canaries 2-0 yesterday
Oh - off the post from Danny Ings!
Redmond cuts the ball back and a Saints shot crashes off the post and into Darlow's arms
Bees now lead 1-3 at the Riverside
Shame! Che Adams bundles in a rebound but he's well offside.
Saints thought they had ties it up. Che Addams thought he scored off a pass from Danny Ings, but the offside flag was raised
A defensive move from Brucie as Paul Dummett on for St. Max. Both playing for the first time in a while and both working their ay back to fitness
Rotherham went two up at Deepdale, but PNE pull it back to 1-2. Rotherham a point clear of the drop zone with a game in hand
Brum tie it up at Dean Court. Now Desmond. Brum now back out of the drop zone and the Rams back in , who are idle due to a waterlogged pitch at Barnsley
In an evil fixture the Evil Lions have come from behind to lead Not a Big Club 3-1 . Not a Big club now four points from safety
Argyle take the lead at Fratton Park. Sorry, Dave
It's raining cats and dogs as Storm D'Arcy wreaks havoc on England
Bednarek booked for a challenge on Almiron and looking at the replay looked like there was very little in it
VAr checking for a red. That would be really harsh
Into the wall twice by Almiron and Cher is down for the Toon sung by Sonny who shows little concern
Forest three up at Wycombe as it's a Knockaert as far as the match and presumably the season for Wycombe
Terriers tie it up at Luton
It's just got worse for the Magpies. They're down to ten men and have used all of their subs. Schar is down and looks likely to come off so they'll have to play with nine men.
Cher still down and now bein g stretchered off . That will be a concussion sub for Brucie and won't count as one of the three changes starting this weekend
It will still be ten because teams are now allowed to make concussion substitutions
I've just noticed that Gudmonsson leveled it for Burnley in the match at Turf Moor - delighted with that. 1-1 would be a perfect score-line.
I see - thanks for the clarification.
I guess it's nine . The announcer had said something about the concussion rule
Sorry, mate , but now I'm not clear as the change wasn't made
Top Billing at Dean Court as Phil gives the Cherries a 3-2 lead vs Brum , who are back in the drop zone
Bees now lead 1-4 at the Riverside
Argyle two up at Fratton Park. Sorry, Dave.
Real Dons take a real lead at the DW. Now lead 2-3
Saints on track to lose their fifth consecutive league match for the first time since September 1998
Pompey pull it back to 1-2 vs Argyle.
PLAY UP POMPEY!
Cambridge top of L2, now go two up at struggling new boys, Barrow
WAY HAY Desmond has arrived at Fratton Park as Pompey score twice in a minute to come from two down.
PLAY UP POMPEY!
LET'S WIN THIS
Half a dozen minutes of stoppage time
Evil Lions now lead Not a Big Club 4-1
Burnley vs the Seagulls has finished 1-1
Rock bottom Richard Burton has taken the lead vs the second placed Tigers, who are now tied second with Donny Osmond
It's over at SJP and the nine man Toon have defeated the Saints 3-2 in a week to forget for them
Next is the match from Bob and Kate's with Johnno and Co. the visitors as it's the West End Boys hosting the East End Boys. A repeat of the 1975 FA Cup Final.
They're off from Bob and Kate's
I'm back for the London derby, or at least part of it. Of course, I'm hoping for a big West Ham win in this one.
This has been a real bore-fest of a first half. The two sides should be ashamed of themselves.
The nice thing is that, due to Burnley's draw with Brighton, there is still an 8-point gap between Burnley and Fulham in 18th. If West Ham were to win this one, it would increase to a whopping 9 points. Hard to imagine any of the bottom three clubs rescuing themselves at this point.
Bearing down on half-time now - I can't remember any shots on goal. Even Arlo sounds bored.
Half-time: What a load of rubbish! 0-0.
It's 0-0 at the end of a half where both teams showed lots of commitment , but little end product. Both teams in the same position as they started the match
Somehow, despite all of these matches today, my beloved Leeds are still hanging on to that 11th spot. And several teams now have played more games than we have. Arsenal, only two points above us, have played two more matches!
Of course there are no changes from either manager. Onward we go into oblivion.
Now then. Ruben Loftus-Cheeky with a nice run before he's upended by Ogbonna. Decent position here. Cabalero to take.
Straight into the wall and out for a corner off Flappy.
Oh - Decordova-Reid just over the top with a tasty volley. Fulham have come out with a sense of purpose in this second half.
A double change at the hour mark for West Ham, as Bowen and Benrahma are replaced by Noble and Yarmolenko.
Oh - off the bar from Soufal! Great ball over by Declan Rice.
Oh - just over the crossbar there from the corner by Tosun.
Bad boy Mitrovic is on for a late cameo. He's immediately on the floor and picks himself up gingerly.
Scotty Parker is really rolling the dice now, with two attacking substitutions. They sense that there are three points for the winning here. I don't sense that at all.
Oh - Anguissa, who's just come on, has a go from distance but Flappy is right behind it.
Loftus-Cheeky arrived at the back-post but could only put his header over. Scotty Parker is looking increasingly dejected in the rain.
Chelsea play the Baggies in the early morning tomorrow and will be licking their chops and getting back above West Ham into 5th now.
Almost into stoppage time now. Both sides running out of time.
Unbelievable! Flappy has just got a yellow card for time wasting! I can't believe that this is the way that West Ham fans like Johnno want their team to play.
Back from a long walk and still 0-0 in second half stoppage time
Just read the second half comments and it appears there were a few highlights. Chelsea will go fifth above the Hammers on goal difference with a win
Mitrovic is down holding his face trying to get Soucek sent off. Nothing doing from Mike Dean.
Well, well - Mike Dean is going to have a look at the VAR evidence now - Soucek could be in trouble!
Hand bags between Soucek and Mitrovic with Mitrovic despite his brawn going down theatrically. VAR checking and now the Dean going to the monitor
Le Socks is incredulous about this VAR check - thinks there is nothing in it. He definitely caught him though.
Not sure if it will be a red, but a booking. Not clever from Soucek and overreacting from Mitrovic
I think a booking would be fair
It looks as if Soucek is going off! Wow!
That will be a three-match ban for a player who has been a real stand-out for WH.
