A Spot of Thursday Action
I've hit my morning work goals, so I'm rewarding myself with a spot of Thursday Premier League action. We've got a fascinating encounter this afternoon - Liverpool visiting Spurs at the new Shite Fart Lane. Neither side is in great form. Spurs in 6th have won two, drawn two and lost one in 2021. However, reigning champions Liverpool in 5th now have had a castastrophic New Year period, with a run of form that's exactly the same record as Fulham in 18th. The goals have really dried up somewhat inexplicably. So, something's got to give. I'd be happy with a 3-3 thrill-fest. Join me to see all that happens, chaps!

Afternoon, chaps! Both sides tonight can leapfrog West Ham United into fourth spot with a win; Liverpool would manage it with a draw. Given that the teams are only 18 and 19 games respectively into the season, there’s no do-or-die jeopardy tonight, though a win would work wonders while a defeat might seriously puncture confidence. If this is half as much fun as the exciting and intriguing game at Anfield just before Christmas, we’ll be doing all right.
The team news out of Shite Fart tonight:
Tottenham Hotspur: Lloris, Rodon, Dier, Davies, Aurier, Ndombele, Hojbjerg, Doherty, Bergwijn, Kane, Son.
Subs: Alderweireld, Sanchez, Winks, Bale, Lamela, Hart, Sissoko, Lucas Moura, Vinicius.
Liverpool: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Henderson, Robertson, Wijnaldum, Thiago, Milner, Salah, Firmino, Mane.
Subs: Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jones, Minamino, Tsimikas, Shaqiri, Origi, Rhys Williams, Phillips, Kelleher.
Referee: Martin Atkinson (W Yorkshire).
Liverpool's defensive woes continue, with Fabinho out with a minor knock, so Hendo joins Joel Matip in the center of defense. Blimey!
Spurs make one change to the side named for the 3-1 win at Sheffield United. Sergio Reguilon is unavailable, so in comes Matt Doherty at left-back.
Jose seems very relaxed tonight for a guy who's side is currently in sixth.
Good afternoon, Bob. Had a bit of a busy day. Still feeding my father-in-law lunch
Teams coming out of the tunnel now. I'm hoping that this one is a real cracker, but I get the sense that it might be a cagey affair. Both sides have a lot to lose with a loss.
How have you been today
Afternoon, David - busy morning for me, too, but I'm enjoying a relaxing afternoon.
My first class is this time next week, so I'm making the most of my last week of freedom while staying on top of the work ahead of the semester. I'll be teaching two classes this semester that I haven't taught in a while.
Always a treat when the teams can wear their regular first choice kits.
Hey Boys
I am here.... Still so annoyed about yesterday!
I need a big day by Kane
Liverpool get us underway in this intriguing fixture.
Are teaching in person?
Hi there, Dave - really sorry about yesterday's match - that was really disappointing.
Yeah - all three classes are face-to-face. One undergraduate class and two graduate level classes.
Cheers Bob
Teams could wear their traditional colors more often than they do
Mane.... big chance...hits it wide!!
Oh - Mane was played in by Salah and he missed!
Awful miss
He won't get much better chances than that.
Son goes down and scores!!!
WOW!
Got an assist from Kane...more of that please!
GOAL! What a start! Moments after Mane missed, Son streaks through and scores!
1-0 Spuds!
They should have been one down but now one up
VAR check for offside now - I think he's a toe off.
GOAL !!! NUMBER ONE SON GIVES PSUYRS THE LEAD OFF A LONG BALL FROM HARRY KANE. LOOKS LIKE ONE OF HIS FEET WAS OFFSIDE VAR CHECKING
Ruddy Norah...it is going to be offside
This is so pathetic....never got any advantage
It's ruled offside, but a really promising start to this one. Keep it up, lads!
It's disallowed and rightly so
Jose looks like he's got a bout of indigestion about that ruled out goal.
What is the point of offside? Who gains an unfair advantage!
No advantage
I agree with both of you that Mane should have given Pool the lead. Great start to the match
Son had a go on the volley from inside his own half - talk about confidence!
Totally disagree with you about rightly chalked off
People say it is black and white...it isn't....is that exact moment that the ball was kicked? What does ball kicked mean? Touching the ball? Indenting the ball? Ball leaves foot?
It should never be called that close...it is not an exact science
I was going to let you all know I get ESPN+ for free now , but only three users at a time are allowed at a time. Bob, you may want to keep your account . Not sure. Got it a few hours ago as part of a bundle deal through our Verizon account
That's a good point, Dave. An interesting perspective from the striker's union. Also, I guess one could say that's inconclusive
It’s a nice open game, too, with both teams taking turns to stroke it around attractively.
Oh - Firmino went down in the box there, looking for something!
It was a bloody dive....don't go oooh Arlo
There doesn't seem to be a limit for Bob's Plus
I'm with you in the Defender's Union, David. Offside is offside.
I don't think that there is...for now.
As for the offside, I hear no one talking about the other end of the decision...they just look at the screen paused!! Why was it paused there?
I see it Both ways. I thought Dave gave a good perspective, but as someone who often was part of a unit that played the offside trap I see it your way too, Bob.
Struth...hope Kane is ok...I need points!
Harry Kane is coming off for treatment on his right ankle now.
These days of empty stands...all you have to do is scream and you'll get a foul
He's back on now.
I'm always trying to help everyone on the LOB and thought I would make the offer for Plus. I thought of everyone on the LOB when I got the bundle deal with Disney Plus and Hulu. Our bill even went down $10 a month. That's a good deal
You defenders were never the sharpest tools in the shed
Be nice . When I defend either the ball or man will pass, but not both. Sometimes neither
I've taken more lumps out of strikers than there are in really lumpy gravy. OUCH!
Steve must be licking his chops on the thought of facing us on Saturday. Their left back is quite a Saka player
Son goes down now - nothing doing.
I'm sure that Steve would rather be looking forward to playing West Brom.
Harry Kane and Abel to only have three touches.By this point I would have committed more fouls than that
Oh - Son is through again but can only find Alisson with a tame shot on goal.
Number One Son straight at Alison
Oh - Mane was in again but Lloris did well to hold.
Mane in...nice save
OH! Another missed chance by Mane.Nice lobbed pass by Salah and Mane stuck out his foot to volley straight at Lloris
Thiago dived in there and gets a yellow card for his trouble. The first of the match.
The Battle of the water carriers and Thiago booked for a late challenge on Hoy Berg
Liverpool really turning the screw now, showing their superiority over this Spurs side.
The problem with Liverpool since that huge win at Selhurst Park is that they have had lots of chances , but have been firing blanks
I think Dave has been giving Arlo instructions after he stated that the goal was disallowed for a marginal offside decision. Bob would never have given those instructions
Jose will not drink to that as Steve Berg-Wine is booked for a foul no TAA on a Pool break off a Spurs corner
It's science
More like social science.
Thinks look dire for Erik , whose hopes may be a Dier
Get up Kane!!!
Harry Kane still down. Lee says Jose wishes Dier was down instead of Harry Kane. That's probably true
HK has gone off for another drinks break. Lazy sod!
That looked like Alison my have been outside the box when he gathered the Spurs through ball
Oh - great tackle by Joe Rodon on Mane as he broke into the box.
Nice slide tackle by Joe Rodon on Mane. That's one for the defenders union. Great tackle on the striker
According to Bob it's Harry Kane and Abel to get a drinks break
Glad to see that the Arsenal v. United match is on NBC on Saturday. We're of course on the Cock against Leicester Sunday morning. (sigh)
Everything was rosy after Sunday...Now Utd lose and Liverpool will win....grrrrrr
Arlo says that Jose says simplicity is genius. He would know since he's a simple person
Oh - Salah got to the by-line and fizzed over a lovely low cross but Mane couldn't get to it.
Al four matches on Sunday are on the Cock. NBC a bunch of cocks
OH! Great save by Lloris from Mane .MANE OH MANE!
Spurs disappointing today
Oh - Mane though there again and made Lloris work.
I agree, Dave - it's the usual Jose game plan. They're at home but you wouldn't know it for all the possession that Liverpool have had.
Andy Robertson wins a corner off of Aurier
Media just goes gaga about Thiago too....because he played for Bayern!
What a bunch of rubbish.... passes like no one else
Geez
I agree with B ob. This is the way Spurs have played since Jose took over. They're not fun to watch
Lee Dixon thinks that Thiago has "soft feet." LOL!
Matt Doherty obstructs Thiago. More like Shannon with that challenge
Into stoppage time . A Barber Shop Quartet of those minutes
Wow - Jose is 58. Almost of our vintage, gents.
Lee just saying that because he played for Bayern Wouldn't say that about our feet
Jose may be our age , but not our vintage. He's just an old sourpuss.
I think he's soft in the head.
Ben Davies kicks the ball out because he was in doubt....are you watching De Gea!!!!!
Liverpool take the lead!!
Bugger!
GOAL! Liverpool lead through Firmino. They're first goal this year!
0-1!
GOPAL !!! CPOOL TAKE THE LEAD. BOBBY CHOMPERS TAPS IN A PASS FROM MANE
At that is half time!!
Breaking news
Lingard joining the Hammers on loan
long diagonal played wide left to Mane, who got behind Aurier and his pass was tapped in by Bobby Chompers from a foot out. Pool one up at the half
And there's the half-tme whistle. Liverpool go in deservedly 0-1 up. Spurs haven't really come to play, apart from a bit of goal-hanging by Son. They'll have to come out of their shells to get back into this one.
Smart move by Lindy . He wasn't getting any matches for us and he will be with a good team the rest of the season. Won't be able to play in the Cup match against us
Jose will claim that Spurs are unlucky not to be in the lead and will claim the disallowed goal cost his team, not their uninspiring performance
Jose should unleash Kane, Son and Bale....you're losing already!!
Second half underway from SFL 2.0
Lots of changes for both sides. Matt Phillips has come on for Joel Matip for Liverpool.
And Harry Kane has come off with Eric Lamela replacing him. Harry Winks has also come on for Serge Aurier.
Salah shoots high and wide frim just outside the six yard box
GOAL !!! TAA PUTS POOL TWO UP
Liverpool have started the second half as they finished the first, Salah coming close there.
And TAA does score!
0-2 Reds!
Lloris pushed away a shot from Mane and TAA put the rebound in the corner
GOAL! Hyppia drives Spurs back in it with a wonder strike!
1-2!
GOAL !!! HOY BERG PULLS IT BACK TO 1-2 FOR SPURS. HIS FIRST GOAL IN 57 PREM MATCHES
Matt Phillips has just come on and he's already picked up a yellow.
Lamela played a long diagonal wide left to Steve Berg-Wine and he passed back to Hoy Berg for a laser shot in the upper 90 from just outside the D
What a last few minutes it's been
Clash of heads between Rodon and Thiago
Play resumes . There should be a fair amount of stoppage time
Suddenly Spurs have woken up a bit.
Thiago , looking like a mummy from a B horror movie about to come back on
Thiago's coming back out bandaged up and looking like a pint of Guinness as Gazza once put it.
GOAL !!! SALAH GIVES POOL A 1-3 LEAD ON THE COUNTER WITH A CRACKING FINISH
GOAL! Oh - another great strike, this time from Salah!
1-3!
That'll be Salah's 14th goal of the season if it counts. VAR checking a possible handball.
The bandage did it as Thiago played the ball wide left to Mane , who passed to Salah and he turned to finish with a cracking shot in the upper 90. Var checking for a hand ball on Bobby Chompers
Martin Atkinson is going off to have a look now.
Martin Atkinson checking the monitor to see if the goal should be disallowed for hand ball
It's chalked off for that handball by Firmino in the move. Cor!
It's disallowed for hand ball. Still 1-2 to Pool as the two gaffers are singing in the rain
It's not just the players that can be heard with the empty stadiums , but the likes of Jose can be too, unfortunately
Back from a very cold walk.... listened to 5Live from the studio.... hell of a lot happened when I was gone!
Lee Dixon says he like Hoy Berg. What is he seeing that we're not?
Welcome back, Dave. It's been an entertaining half
just saw the goals
Was the second goal..."sensational"?
It was just a break!!!
It's sunny, with a moderate breeze and 70 over here. Great winter weather here., but you two have great Summer weather
Oh - Bobby Chompers rockets one into the side netting.
It's hip to like the player that doesn't do anything in the middle of the park
And he's a foreigner
Mane scores
I'm staying inside today, for sure.
GOAL !!! MANE PUTS POOL 1-3 AHEAD. NICE FINISH
GOAL! Mane sneaks in behind Rodon and hammers it home. Bad defending there.
1-3!
Nice cross from TAA horribly misjudged by Joe Rodon and Mane took advantage by scoring from close range
I walked earlier and may mow the back yard after the match and before Men in Blazers
Lee now the Super Bow statto. GEEZ!
What's with all this SuperBowl chat? Have I just tuned into a special episode of the "Brits Talk NFL?" podcast?
What the hell is Jose doing with Bale? Why bring him in?
He is just being an idiot about it
Gareth will need to be more than a Bale of hay
He clearly doesn't fancy Bale. Do you think the owners forced the purchase on him and now he's digging his heels in?
That reminds me. Will anyone be around for the transfer Day Deadline special on Monday?
Ok...what about that shot....thought he was a genius... sounds different off his foot....blames the head injury!
I didn't think about that, Bob. That could very well be the reason Jose doesn't play him too much. He knew about him during his time in charge of Real
Jose is an idiot....has to earn minutes
HE'S earned it in Spain!!
I should be, David. Looking forward to seeing if Leeds pick up some late additions. Hoping we don't sell anyone.
He could make a big difference!!
Agreed, Dave. I think Bob might have a point with his explanation.
Not sure what to expect on transfer deadline in January. Some are eventful and some practically no activity
Well, Bale sat on the bench a lot at Real as well. He shouldn't have come back to Spurs, without a guarantee to play. He would play every week for a club like Palace.
They're predicting that it will be a quiet one this season because of lost revenue due to Covid.
I agree, Dave. I sure would play him , but what do I know? Jose supposedly know all and sees all.
I think so too, Bob, but will watch anyway just in case
January deadlines are usually boring...but I'll be watching
Shad is having a procedure done on Tuesday
Bale would have been good at a club like Hammers or Toffees , who are having great seasons and where he would have been given a chance
Kathy is getting the vacinne on Friday thru SCCC
She still has no symptoms. It will be a week tomorrow since she was in the office
Wishing Shad the best. Hope all goes well.
Glad she's getting the vaccine and glad she doesn't have any symptoms. Everyone else doing okay at your house?
Speak of the devil - it's the enigmatic Welshman coming on now.
Talking about Bale. He's lived in Spain for a while and I bet I Speak more Spanish than him.
Bale is about to come on....they have to make some golf comment....these guys are NFL experts, stand up comedian and gaga fans of Liverpool and City
Jose must be part Welsh. He sure acts like a fire breathing dragon.
Good on Kathy; I wish our university was doing. We seem to be on our own to schedule appointments. I've got one set but it was a hassle.
Dave, I would ask you about golf well before any of these numpties.
Gareth Bale on for Steve Berg-Wine
Finally he comes on....just a cozy 10 minutes to do somethin
Jose will say....He didn't change anything
These guys may think they're stand up comics. They're so funny I forgot to laugh
Also Jose will say he had more than enough time
When is your appt?
As for Kathy, she is a little freaked about getting it because two people in her office has it
Still...she has no symptoms and it has been almost a week
I am thinking positive
Jose will have plenty of excuses, starting with the disallowed goal. Will say his side were brilliant
What a rotten 24 hours as a Red Devil fan
March 31 up in Buffalo. I keep looking on the website for my county to see if anything opens up. But I feel perfectly safe with what I've been doing so far so I can keep doing it for a while longer.
Understandable and glad Kathy's getting the vaccine. In our area it's still a limited number of people 65 and older getting the vaccine, or those 18 and older with pre-existing conditions
We checked online and nothing is available. Bob, glad you are able to get the vaccine in a couple of months
Firmino coming off now; Origi coming on.
Like for like as Origi is on for Bobby Chompers who took enough bites to ruin Jose's evening
I just wonder how much longer Kathy has to worry about it!
Lee's jokes are really awful
Steve must be loving this match
As expected, Bale has done nowt.
I'm sure he is!
Jose wanting a penalty called on Nat Phillips . Never a penalty. A quintet of stoppage time minutes
Lee Dixon apparently thinks he's got a future as a stand up comic. I agree, Dave - really irritating.
He was given no time!
Next Thursday will be consecutive Thursdays of Jose facing a German manager.
What are Spurs just passing around for....are they United in disguise!
Jose will say he had tons of time. I don't think he had enough time
Well, I heard a CDC guy say yesterday that all the IB (the category that Kathy and I are in) people should be through both doses by April and everyone else by the end of the summer. 70% herd immunity by September. So, maybe back to normal in the fall.
I don't think Jose will be Singing in the Rain
It looks good for being back to normal by the Fall .
Interesting
Of course, I don't want Kath to have anything NOW!
It's been a week tomorrow and there has been nothing
Bale fouls Wijnaldum and that should do it
