A Snowy Saturday Morning
A very happy Saturday morning, chaps! We got a truckload of lake-effect snow dumped on us overnight, so you know what that means. I'm up early to watch the lunchtime kickoff between Southampton v. Chelsea. Then I'll be heading out to dig out the driveway during the boring 10am match (Burnley v. WBA). Then I'll be back after a refreshing Saturday shower for the big one - the Merseyside Derby at 12:30. Then I'll be in and out for the the late relegation battle between Fulham and Sheffield Utd. Join me for the fun and games (and help me dig some snow!). Cheers!
367 Comments:
First up is fourth-placed Chelsea visiting 13th place and dropping Soton, who have lost six on the trot.
Here are the teams for this morning's match:
Southampton (possible 3-4-2-1) McCarthy; Bednarek, Salisu, Vestergaard; Djenepo, Ward-Prowse, Romeu, Bertrand; Minamino, Redmond; Ings.
Substitutes: Forster, Stephens, Ramsay, Ferry, Tella, Jankewitz, Chauke, Adams, N’Lundulu.
Chelsea (3-4-2-1) Mendy; Azpilicueta, Zouma, Rudiger; James, Kante, Kovacic, Alonso; Mount, Werner; Abraham.
Substitutes: Arrizabalaga, Christensen, Chilwell, Emerson, Jorginho, Ziyech, Gilmour, Giroud, Hudson-Odoi.
Referee Anthony Taylor.
And we're away at the Dell!
Morning Bob
I am here watching the footer and doing some crosswords on-line
COME ON YOU SAINTS
Alsono should have put Chelsea ahead
Morning, Dave - hope you're doing well. Are you digging some snow alongside me this morning?
No, we had a few inches overnight yesterday. We were supposed to get over 6 inches but didn't!
How much did you get today?
We were expected to get 12-15 but I haven't been out yet. I can hear some snowblowers going and the snow plows have been by a couple of times. I'll be digging after this one for sure.
That sucks
You should take my old snowblower
Of course, a Chelsea loss is better from a ManYoo perspective, but I'm hoping for a Chelsea win over a side who we're slated to play next at Elland Road on Tuesday. I'm hoping that this will be the Saints 7th loss on the trot and that we'll be their 8th.
How the media talk about teams these days....they must all read from the same book of quotes..... it is all such crap
Nah - I'm not interested in snowblowing yet. Digging snow is one of my primary fitness activities during the winter, especially during COVID. I hope to keep that up until at least 60 before breaking down and buying a snow blower.
What set you off there about the commentator?
Tommy Tuchel looks like he's on a ski vacation with his puffy parka. Can't he buy himself a decent winter overcoat and suit?
Good on ya!
I don't know....just what they say about how teams are playing, their formations.... I am just a crotchety old man!
That's another thing wrong with the modern game...did you see how close all the players were there! I think pretty much every player was inside the width of the center circle there
This has been really boring so far. I've given up on Timo Werner, my Golden Boot pick, doing anything this season. He's been hopeless.
BTW..... 60 aint far off!!
But the media will say that Chelsea have played well with possession under Tuchel's philosophy
I did notice that. I also noticed how all the players moved over to the left side of the pitch ahead of McCarthy's goal kick, like a bunch of robots.
How these players fall over after being breathed on drives me nuts... and the foul being called is even worse
It is embarrassing
That's true! It won't be long. I'm hoping to keep working until 70 and it will likely be here. I'll have 13 years at Fredonia under my belt at the end of this year. Another 13 years would bring me to 70 - that is I'm half-way there to 26 years at Fredonia. Cor!
I really think the game is much worse than it used to be but if you listen to everyone..... it is so exciting....City are the best team ever....Liverpool are the best ever....beautiful passing.... BLOODY POSSESSION!
I'm sorry.... I have to stop complaining...I just miss the sport I loved
Can't believe it has been that long!!!
I'm glad you like what you're doing. I was getting too stressed at school to continue...again.... things changed so much... and not for the better
Has there been a decent shot on goal? What do teams go out to do?
I agree with you - there are only a small handful of sides that I really enjoy watching - Liverpool, United, Everton (on some days), and of course Leeds.
All the others either play modern, boring football or are just rubbish.
My friend Dick has been in my fantasy league the last couple of years. He has done really well(he looks at data not players)
He has actually paid attention and knows what's going on and watches matches! I told him that finally he has woken up but it is too late! He missed everything when the game was exciting
I know - it's crazy how fast the time has gone. I still remember visiting you guys the first fall that I was up here in 2008. You were in the old house at that time and the boys were tiny.
Honestly, I could afford to retire at any point so if, at any point, I get sick of it, I'll walk away.
I like how Leeds play and Liverpool. I don't think United play the way they should. Too slow and wrong direction a lot of the time
I hate how City play.... but they are "absolutely astonishing"
It sounds like you enjoy your work!
Has it been more difficult under Covid?
People have forgotten that this is supposed to be an entertainment. I had a chat after the match yesterday with a colleague from Brum who's a massive Wolves fan. Of course, he was giving me the business about the Wolves win but he seemed to think that that the only thing that matters. Three points off a flukey own goal even though they were really boring.
GOAL! Chelsea's defense opens up, Minnie Me streaks through and pokes it past Mendy.
1-0!
The Saints take the lead
Both guys are saying it has been total domination by Chelsea!! No it hasn't .... they have done nothing but pass the ball!!
The commentators say that that was against the run of play, but Chelsea haven't done anything in this match.
Again... what has Chelsea done today? These are guys are saying how much of a travesty it is for them to be behind
Two shots.... almost back passes
POSSESSION MEANS NOTHING!
They keep talking about Chelse's dominance but then saying about creating nothing.....that's the point!
We agree with each other....why are we the only ones that see it
Defensive middies get so much undeserved credit....drives me nuts
Why do teams need TWO defensive midfielders when they already have 4 defenders.... against teams that are playing the same way!!
Full backs are no longer full backs... they have to attack... forget knowing how to defend! How about having wingers
Yeah - it's been no fun with Covid, but I've gotten used to it. In all three classes, I've got a group on the Zoom and a group in the classroom to manage. It's pretty exhausting but still nothing like the stress I had teaching high school and battling the kids.
Good morning, Bob and Dave. Just woke up and as I turned on the telly they were showing the replay of the goal. Well worked goal , great through ball by Redmond and great finish by Minnie Minnow
The commentator described the goal by saying there were more dummies than at a kindergarten class. I disagree. More dummies than at a Trump Family gathering
McCarthy does well to turn around a header from Zouma from a free kick
Zouma sneaks around the back and forces McCarthy to make probably his first save of the match.
Morning, David - welcome! You haven't missed much. Chelsea have been really poor.
Another thing wrong with VAR...that was offside from the free kick... what happens if Chelsea scores from the corner that never should have been
SO INCONSISTENT !
As I have said, the offside is ridiculous...it should have been that exact. It should be the linesman's decision except for outrageous mistakes
Bamford's goal last night... should have counted... no advantage whatsoever
Thanks, Bob. Looks like I timed it perfectly
Morning David
Totally agree, Dave. One defensive middie to mop things up is surely enough. Too many sides just want to strangle the game by hanging on to the ball and doing nothing with it.
Agreed about Bamford's disallowed goal. Leeds were robbed
Good Morning, Dave.
Bob... how dare you say Chelsea have been poor!! They have had so much possession.... over 70%....the most against the run of play goal you could have imagined....one way traffic!!
David.... all of this has been said by these guys!!
Bob is correct......Chelsea have been rubbish
I agree - Patrick has been robbed of two good goals this season - away to Palace and the one yesterday. He should be on 14 goals. And we deserved a point - or better!
Do you think TH14 will join the Cherries? Montreal have given permission for him to talk to them
It looks as if he's keen on it. I'd love to see Bournemouth back in the Prem next season with TH-14 at the helm. Better than most of the boring yo-yo teams that just go up and down and up and down.
WOW ! I didn't know about that. I think TH 14 at Dean Court could likely happen. Hope he does well there if he joins them
Agreed, Bob. The Cherries were fun to watch even if they went down last season. I'll miss the Cottagers if they go down
Tammy A.... Greg Louganis in disguise!
Again....there was "contact"....who knows what is a foul these days
I heard the announcer mention about the goal against the run of play. Glad you two cleared that up
That's the half-time whistle. A really boring first half that ends with the Saints 1-0 up. Hoping for better in the second half.
Half time
This guy is still going on about Chelsea being behind... but then saying they haven't done anything with it!
Saints one up at the half thanks to a well worked goal that had more dummies than at a Trump family gathering
Hudson-Odoi is warming up to possibly come on.
Nice Trump joke, David!
Cheers, Bob. Thought you would enjoy that
The second half is underway from St. Mary's
I don't think Tuchel was talking about Oktoberfest at the half. More like yelling SCHNELL SCHNELL!
We are off in the second half for the "most one sided game. of all time"
Chelsea go forward....and don't get a shot off
Nice through ball, but too much Chelsea passing in the Saints box
As predicted, Hudson-Odoi has come on for Tammy Abraham. So, that's a midfielder on for a striker. When Chelsea need at least a goal. Nice job Tommy.
United not playing until tomorrow so I can wear United stuff
We bought Dick a zip up sweatshirt for his 60th birthday in December...it arrived. A week or so later....another one arrived!! He sent it to me!
Useles modern day cross by Timo
Dave, I have another guess to your question from last night about the pills and alcoholism. I'm changing to Jack Grealish. It just seems like it would be him. He has a promising career and this surely would ruin it
Another example of modern day crap.... players don't know how to take throw-ins..... there have been many foul throws called and many that should have been called!
Congrats, Dave. That sweatshirt is perfect for the current weather. I could have used that the past ten days
I thought exactly the same thing, David!
Matt told me to shut up!!
He did say that the player has been around for a while!
What about Pickford?
Is Dick a United fan? Or were you just having a go at him? I thought he used to give you stick for it, right?
I think Hudson-Odoi for Tammy Abraham is to add width and speed that was lacking. He can play either as a forward or attacker. That change may work
as I said I thought Grealish....he was COVIDIOT twice!!
Penalty to Chelsea - Danny Ings with a forward's challenge on Mount.
Bloody hell.... Chelsea get a pen
After pisspoor crossing all the time.... they get pen
Stonewall pen.... Ings with Scholes-like tackle
PENALTY CHELSEA AS DANNY INGS MOUNTED DOWN A CHELSEA PLAYER
Mount to step up...and slots it home.
1-1!
Mount steps up and scores..... 5Live at least 5 second ahead of NBC! Why?
GOAL!!! 1-1 MOUNT SENDS MCCARTHY THE WRONG WAY WITH A WELL PLACED PENALTY
I bet it is the US worried about language with no fans and they are delaying it so they dub it out
Coventry have doubled their lead against Brentford
I had originally picked Kyle Walker for being a COVIDOT , but then thought he's later into his career and Grealish would surely have more to lose
Free kick chance for the Blues now
Now JWP mounts a stupid challenge , but this time just outside the box
I hope it isn't Grealish
Alonso.....straight into the wall
Useless effort
Into the wall by Marcos Alonso
I could see Grealish because as you stated he's a moron and never sounds like the sharpest talk on the wall during interviews. Villa would really suffer because they're too reliant on him
Could Jose actually play Bale tomorrow? He looked good in the EL. Scored a great goal and got an assist
Interesting about the penalty. I think Mason Mount was born in Portsmouth, so winning and scoring the penalty would be a great source of satisfaction to him
That was a brilliant goal he scored on Thursday. It would be great for the Prem if he does that on a consistent basis
Grealish is my guess, as well. He seems fairly chavvy.
Chelsea’s passing has been a bit snappier since half-time, though they still aren’t creating much. Werner has been pants and Hudson-Odoi has been quiet since coming on.
Of course....the story could have been completely made up!!
That's true. Nothing like nasty gossip to try to ruin someone's life
If the Bees lose then that would be three on the trot. Never expected that
Ooh.... Saints hit the crossbar!
Bugger
After not losing since October
OH! Header from Vestergaard from the edge of the box off a nice cross from Redmond off the bar
McCarthy does well to turn a round a long range shot that was mounted
Decent save there from McCarthy. Called offside anyway.
Agreed, Dave. Really surprising from the Bees
Looks like Ziyech is being readied to come on. I think he's been hopeless since transferring from Ajax - another boring water carrier.
Hudson-O..... England International....just kicked it straight into the defenders shins..... so bad!
Thomas Tuchel about to make his final rolls of the dice
I don't care what these guys are saying.... Chelsea don't deserve to win this.... they have had two or three shots on target! One was a pen and another was a back pass from 40 yards!
Hudson off after coming on at half time
The sub is subbed. WOW! Humiliating for Hudson-Odoi as he's replaced by Ziyech. Like for like as Jorginho on for Kovacic. on the final rolls of the dice from Tommy T.
Again... Chelsea have done nowt today
Late flag up again....this rule sucks!!
Even after Azpa touched the ball the linesman didn't put up his flag
A Mounted cross off of former Chelsea trainee, Ryan Bertrand for a corner. Corner headed on then a Chelsea player well offside.
Minnie Minnow has had the coach Tella him that Nathan is replacing him. Not sure if that's a defensive move by Ralph, Malph
I hope the made up player isn't Greenwood!
Marcos Alonso booked for grabbing Djnepo, who theatrically went down off minimal contact
If the score stays the same, the Hammers could overtake the Blues if they beat Spurs tomorrow morning
Agreed, Dave, but he has to be considered a possibility. Perhaps Foden. He seems to have dark circles around his eyes. That would be the insomnina
We wouldn't the Spuds being Hammered at all. Johnno would be delighted
What we are discovering is that there are almost as many dummies in the England squad as in the Trump Family
OH! Reese James should have given Chelsea the lead off a great run from a Mounted cross. Wide open three yards out and blasted well over
Like for like as Che Addams on for Danny Ings
Kate thinks that Tommy Tuchel looks like Jamie Vardy. Your thoughts?
Sorry, but I haven't noticed the resemblance. Maybe the hair is similar
does anyone agree with my statement posted at 9:12?
I hope it's not Phil Foden - he's the only Citeh player I like!
Totally agree with you, David.
Vesty concedes a Chelsea corner
Cheers, Bob. Thought you would
Another useless cross!
Again... Chelsea have been useless!
An LOB blogging trio of stoppage time minutes that may change to Bob and Dave's Barber Shop Quartet of that
Now all the time wasting will occur
Subs, falling down, corner flagging
The ref not a fan of McCarthyism as he's booked for time wasting. Sounds like McCarthyism
Zouma clears a pass from Che Addams for a Saints corner
Southampton have a chance... the cross to no one.... not many in the box to hit
Corner for the Saints....come on... Score!!
Header missed
Now they are going to time waste it
They will want to stop the rot of defeats.... forget the win!
Even I' irked at this time wasting change as N'Lundulu on or Redmond so he can be on the pitch for three seconds. Ralphie should have been denied that final roll of the dice
Geez.... a sub after the 3 added minutes.... I HATE IT!!!!!!
That will just add more time to the added time!
It is to waste time and disrupt the flow
SHOULD BE BANNED
Of course. the added time to added time could come back and bite you..... OGS!!!!
Definitely will be two dropped points for Chelsea as it finishes 1`-1. Saints end a run of half a dozen consecutive Prem defeats
That's it
Ends all square
I am off for walkies
I'll be back for the Merseyside Derby for sure...not sure about the 10 o'clocker.....zzzzz
I'm sure Bob will be shoveling!
I'm off to take Sparky walkies on a cool, but sunny morning
Agreed with Dave. The next one looks like a snoozer as does the late one
Coventry has defeated the Bees 2-0 and are now half a dozen points clear of the drop zone
Well, that was hardly a barn-burner to start the weekend. Bit a bore really. I'm sure that you lot are happy with the result.
I'm off to do some shoveling and will be back for the Merseyside Derby.
Cheers Bob and Dave. Look forward to chatting during the Mersey Derby
Hey Boys
I am here for the derby
Of course NBC proper is still on the Vet program until kick off
I'm back too. NBC has really gone downhill
Liverpool (4-3-3) Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Kabak, Henderson, Robertson; Thiago, Wijnaldum, Jones; Salah, Firmino, Mane.
Substitutes: Adrian, Tsimikas, Davies, Phillips, N Williams, Keita, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Shaqiri, Origi.
Everton (possible 4-1-4-1) Pickford; Coleman, Holgate, Keane, Godfrey; Davies; James, Doucoure, Gomes, Digne; Richarlison.
Substitutes: Olsen, Nkounkou, Allan, Sigurdsson, Onyango, Calvert-Lewin, King, Iwobi, Bernard.
Referee Chris Kavanagh
Liverpool go fourth if they win by three or more goals
In the 3 o'clocker.... WBA should have won even with ten men but Burnley had a stonewall handball penalty....not even VARed.... makes no sense
Early corner to the Blues
They're off from Anfield.
Hi there, guys - I'm back from shoveling and a hot shower to join you for the Derby.
Here are the teams:
Jordan Pickford starts in goal for Everton, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin are fit enough for the bench. Liverpool are unchanged.
Liverpool (4-3-3) Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Kabak, Henderson, Robertson; Thiago, Wijnaldum, Jones; Salah, Firmino, Mane.
Substitutes: Adrian, Tsimikas, Davies, Phillips, N Williams, Keita, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Shaqiri, Origi.
Everton (possible 4-1-4-1) Pickford; Coleman, Holgate, Keane, Godfrey; Davies; James, Doucoure, Gomes, Digne; Richarlison.
Substitutes: Olsen, Nkounkou, Allan, Sigurdsson, Onyango, Calvert-Lewin, King, Iwobi, Bernard.
Referee Chris Kavanagh.
ooh.... could have come to something!
Everton would tie up Liverpool with a win.... behind on GD
I saw that and agree. The Baggies blew it even though that no penalty decision hurt them. I think they're toast
Looks like we both posted from the Guardian!!
NBC almost didn't make it in time for kickoff. Really ridiculous
I can't say that I'm unhappy that I missed the relegation dogfight at 10am. I imagine that I got more entertainment out of shoveling.
Great goal by Richarlson... great pass by James....hope it's onside!
GOAL !!! RICH ARLISON GIVES THE TOFFEES A LEAD
GOAL! Blimey - Richarlison opens the scoring and Liverpool's slump continues!
he's onside!!
Liverpool have lost THREE home games on the trot and counting!!
Nasty elbow in the gut by Robertson.
After a bout of head tennis a lovely through ball from Hummus Rodriguez for Rich Arlison to score past his compatriot, Alison with a well placed finish
It wasn't a bad game at all.....both teams had chances...especially the Baggies in the second half
heard Arlo mention something about 1923. Was that when they last lost four home matches on the trot?
Everton haven't been in the lead at Anfield for yonks....until now!
What earth is going on with Liverpool?!
I thought the Baggies were the better team, even with ten men. Probably their best performance since Fat Sam took charge. Also, Burnley probably don't know how to play when they have the majority of the possession
Liverpool fans keep saying on the radio that they miss their home fans more than any other team
That is crap...if you're good...you're good.... Are you not good unless you have a crowd to back you up? I'd be embarrassed to say that
Arlo says the square ball was a good one....it went straight to a blue shirt!
I think the Toffees last won at Anfield in 2000 or somewhere around that time
I agree, Dave. Every team is affected by the loss of their fans. Not a valid excuse from Pool fans.
Liverpool working their way back into the match now after that early shock.
Did you know......
The last reigning top-flight champions to lose four home league games in a row were Everton in 1928-29.
Liverpool of 2020-21?
That's just an excuse from Liverpool fans. Everybody misses the fans equally.
I think the toffees last won in 1999
1999 Kevin Campbell scored the winner
I'm still fuming about Everton's equalizer at OT
Here go... Arlo having kittens about City
Why is Arlo going on about Citeh? We're not even watching them? "Metronomic?" Sounds boring to me. Who wants to watch a metronome?
I was close with that Toffees win at Anfield. Hope Liverpool emulate their Citeh rivals of 1929
I was just going to applaud the Everton man for not trying to pass it around at the top of his box..... he then passes straight to a red shirt!
Metronomes drive me bonkers.
When they talk about the crash of 1929 I guess they were referring to those Toffees home defeats
Kabak lectured for that challenge on Hummus Rodriguez. Must be hungry , but will need to have that after the match
James Rod takes a shot on goal from Goodison Park...on target but an easy save
Kabak looks a bit like I would if I were making my Anfield debut in a Merseyside Derby. Nervous as kittens.
Really tame free kick from Hummus Rodriguez. That was more like rancid hummus or stale Toffees
Our cold spell is over. Chilly this morning, but sunny with highs in the upper 60s this afternoon. Your thoughts?
Do these two plonkers know Liverpool aren't playing?
If they're so good....why are you only putting them on the Cock!
Oh - Mane found Bobby Chompers whose effort is deflected wide and out.
Glad for you David....wish we'd warm up
Salah and Mane combine to set up Bobby Chompers who jahas a shot deflected for a corner
Henderson with a decent effort well saved by Pickers
Oh - great left-footed volley by Hendo, superbly turned around by Pickers.
Cross headed away then Robin Olsen does well to turn around a volley from Hendo
