That Post-ESL Moment
The ESL may have been squashed for now, but we're still feeling its after-effects, as if we're still hungover. Every day, there seems to be a protest outside a ground where supporters aren't allowed in. This morning, Liverpool host Newcastle at Anfield with the Reds at home for the first time since they pulled out of the ESL. Later on, there is a London derby between Chelski and West Ham, which should see similar fan action. Join me for all of the fireworks, eh?
269 Comments:
Morning, chaps. Jurgen Klopp has had another go at Leeds for the protests the other day. Tough nuts, Jurgs. You do the crime, you do the time.
The teams now out on the pitch:
Liverpool: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho, Kabak, Robertson, Thiago, Wijnaldum, Salah, Jota, Mane, Firmino.
Subs: Milner, Keita, Adrian, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jones, Tsimikas, Shaqiri, Rhys Williams, Neco Williams.
Newcastle United: Dubravka, Murphy, Fernandez, Clark, Dummett, Ritchie, Sean Longstaff, Shelvey, Almiron, Saint-Maximin, Joelinton.
Subs: Carroll, Gayle, Wilson, Lewis, Hendrick, Krafth, Manquillo, Willock, Gillespie.
Referee: Andre Marriner (West Midlands).
And we're away at Anfield, which is bathed in spring sunshine.
GOAL! That didn't take long! Mo Salah rifles one into the roof the net on the spin for his 20th of the season.
1-0 Liverpool!
Now St. Max is threatening Kabak. This match has a nice open feel to it. Hoping for some more goals.
Oh - Firmino had a chance to play Salah in again there. Ball was hit behind him.
Kabak picks up the first yellow of the afternoon, as St. Max bursts through.
With that goal, Liverpool are in the top four for the first time in months. Of course, Chelski are only a point back and have a match later on today.
Murphy gets to the by-line but his cross is cleared off the line. Dangerous moment there for the champions.
Kabak is riding a fine line now as he fouls St. Max again. He'll have to mind his business now or else he'll be in for an early bath.
Oh - Longstaff is in there but Alisson does really well. Newcastle are definitely in this one.
Now the ball is in the net from Liverpool old boy Shelvy but it's flagged off for offside. Shame.
Of course, I'm looking forward to tomorrow's clash with Man Utd. If Leeds can get a point out of that one, we'll leapfrog Arsenal, who lost to Everton yesterday, into 9th. Extraordinary!
Lovely interplay between Salah and Jota there but the Portugeezer fired well over.
Jota again after some good work by Mane to track down a long ball and then cross. Shinned it a bit and Dubravka was able to save.
Oh - another big chance for Liverpool. Kieran Clark made a mess of it and Jota should have scored. Hit it into the ground. He doesn't quite have his shooting boots on today.
Saint-Maximin is basically unplayable when he gets going. Here he is, surrounded by four red shirts ... and he still wins the throw! He’s such an entertaining player. Liverpool are only just keeping him at arm’s length.
Oh - Salah was through from a great ball by Bobby Chompers. Dubravka did well to smother the effort. Jurgen not pleased that the Reds aren't further in front.
Bit of a moment there between Jota and Murphy. VAR did a quick check and didn't find anything untoward.
Jota again scuffs a shot after some more fine work by Bobby Chompers. Not his day.
Newcastle here are showing why they're just about good enough to stay up. They'll likely lose this one but they're in it.
Oh - Mane should have scored now as Salah played him in. He tried to round Dubravka who grabbed onto the ball.
It’s end-to-end entertainment. Another cracker of an early Saturday morning match for us.
Jota and Murphy have had another go at each other. The referee waves play on, but let’s keep an eye on this duel.
This could quite feasibly be 4-3 already, you know.
Oh - Mane with another great chance. TAA with a super cross in and then the Senegalese tried an acrobatic effort on the volley. Wide.
Good morning, Bob. Had a bit of a late lie in. Here to join you for the matches
Looks like a decent first half
A pair of stoppage time minutes
Then Mane heads Over a cross from Andy The best Robertson since John
The half-time whistle comes and Liverpool might be a bit disappointed that they're only 1-0 up. Yet, Newcastle might also feel aggrieved that they haven't scored. St. Max has been magnificent.
Liverpool one up at the half
Morning, David - glad to have the pleasure of your company. I'm off to wake up the missus.
Teams back out for the second half now. This has been a really good one so far, with both sides going for it.
Thanks, Bob.Back for the second half at Anfield
How's your week been, mate?
It's been a busy week,. The Thrift store came to clear out the garage of the house we're moving into and we're busy getting ready for a garage sale at our current residence
How was your week
Nice through ball from Shelvey to Joe Linton, but Alisson did well to rush a out and push away the ball at his feet
That's next weekend, is it?
Busy week here as well. We're breathing down on the end of the semester, with lots of end of year duties. It's also the time of year for pitching in proposals for fall conferences. I've got one in San Diego I'm looking forward to in November. I've missed the conference trips during Covid.
Oh - suddenly Joelinton was through on goal but Alisson did really well to stand up to the shot.
OH! The Toon should have tied it up. Nice save by Allison, from fellow Brazi, Joe Linton, but it was too close to the keeper from close range
Oh - nice move now from Liverpool and Dubravs saves well from Bobby Chompers at the back post.
Our garage sale is in a fortnight with lots of things needing to sell. Hope you get to go to San Diego. It's lovely there
Dubravka was brav as he rushed to save at the feet of Mane and took a kick in the head for his troubles. A bit of a headache?
Klopp holding on to 1-0? Milner on for Jota
Oh - I hope you do well by that, mate. Have fun with it.
In the Championship it's third vs fourth as it's the Cherries vs the Bees. It's 0-0 in the second half. As things stand the Hornets will be promoted with a draw vs the Evil Lions in the 10 AM kickoffs
Pretty much like for like as Cally Wilson on for Joe Linton. Wilson more and out and out striker
OH! A Toon rocket of a back pass from the halfway line near catches out Dubravka as it took and odd bounce and his clearance went off Mane and fortunately for a goal kick
Thanks, Bob. Will be glad when It's over. It's been an exhausting process
OH Andy Robertson the best since John wins a tackle and shoots just wide from 25 yards out
A much needed attacking change from Brucie as it's a striker for a defender. Last week's hero, Joe Willock, on for Cieran Clark
A half time score that will please Dave as Pompey is one up at the half vs Bristol Rovers. That's not idle gossip. Pompey move up to the last playoff spot while Rovers is bottom and would be relegated with this result
I'm back after helping Kate with brekkies. Liverpool still 1-0 up I see.
Welcome back, mate. What did you have? I had a blueberry muffin and coffee
We enjoyed doing yard sales several years in a row here but haven't had the chance during Covid. It is a lot of work but I enjoy the chatter with the neighbors. Fredonia has one weekend in June dedicated to yard sailing but it hasn't happened since 2019.
We're having oatmeal and banana.
Twenty minutes left - Newcastle still very much in this one. They could easily nick a goal back as we did on Monday night.
I guess the big match today is the London Derby at 12:30 on NBC. It's the Hammers vs Chelsea which is 5th vs 6th. Sadly they're two defensive minded teams
Good to see Brucie going for it with those changes.
Salah should have put Pool two up , but shot in to the side netting from close range. Now Pool have a free kick
Oh - bad giveaway there in the Newcastle defense. Salah tried one with his left peg. Wide. That's the problem with Salah playing on the right side. He's a naturally left-footed player so a chance like that favors his weaker side and he's more likely to shank a shot with his stronger foot wide of the near post.
Free kick from TAA off the wall for a corner
OH! Corner headed out then a volleyed pass from Fab is volleyed just wide by TAA from the D
That sounds like a good brekkies. Too warm for oatmeal here. Better weather last weekend for that, but that may be gone till the Fall in our area
Hope you can do a yard sale soon. Ours will basically be that. We actually get more people outside the subdivision than in, but not sure how that will work
It's still fairly chilly here but I hear that we should be up into the 60s this next week. Good bike riding weather.
Morning boys
I am just checking in to say hello
The ten man Bees take the lead at the Cherries. Any guesses as to who was sent off for the Bees?
Good Morning, Dave. Glad you can join in
Oh - Milner with a raking drive through a crowd. Dubravka with another smart save.
Milner with a shot blocked for a corner then the next corner headed out and Dubravka saves a shot from Milner from the D
Morning, Dave - thanks for checking in with us. I hope your family is having a peaceful weekend.
Since the Bees took the lead the Hornets need a win vs the Evil Lions to clinch promotion
Thanks Bob
I second what Bob said. Wishing your family well
The Bees took the lead with ten men. Bob will not be surprised that Pontus was the player sent off for the Bees
I hate this. Why is there drinkies. Is it that oppressively hot?
Liverpool in fourth. They won't stay there no matter what happens in the London derby
Cambridge guaranteed to go up today with a win because third and fourth play each and one has to drop points
There are some players like Almiron going down with cramp. Perhaps not warmed up enough?
Poo counter after a cross from Ritchie was headed out
I can't quite see Liverpool ending up in the top four.
Great stats, Dave. Good news for Cambridge . I think they were last in L1 in 2002. It's been a tough 20 years for Cambridge United fans
Anything but Fab in a cynical off the ball challenge on St. Max. A booking, but it could have been a red
Sadly, I think they will
Chelsea have the CL to worry about
There is the Cup Final as well with Chelsea and Leicester
The Cup Final is on the penultimate weekend of the season....the Premier League fixture that day....
Chelsea vs Leicester!
That is the kind of tackle that should be a red
Liverpool's hopes of a top four finish depend on a slip up, from the Foxes, Chelsea , or the Hammers. It's 50-50 in my opinion
Into stoppage time as a corner from one of the Longstaffe brothers is headed out. A Barber Shop Quartet of those minutes
Pathetic modern day corner...doesnt beat the front post...what's the point!
This will be a win for Liverpool but not a convincing one. Their season in a nutshell.
I think the Cup Final ten years ago was also on the penultimate weekend and both teams were scheduled to play each other in the Prem
Oh my word! Newcastle have nicked an equalizer right at the death!
1-1!
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!
GOAL !!! ANOTHER LATE GOAL LET IN BY POOL. CALLY WILSON SCRAM,BLES IN A LATE EQUALIZER
VAR has decided it's not a goal. Pathetic.
BUGGER!It's going to be disallowed due to the stupid handball law. Allison blocked from Cally Wilson, but it came off his arm prior to scoring. Hard on the Toon
THAT IS PATHETIC!!!
HIS ARM IS TUCKED IN!!
This is going to be a lucky three points for Pool
Totally agree.... PATHETIC
Wow! Joe Willock has scored! Surely they can't take that one away from Newcastle!
WAY HAY! JOE WILLOCK THE HERO AGAIN AS HE TIES IT UP WITH A REALLY LATE EQUALIZER. WELL DESERVED IN THE SIXTH MINUTE OF STOPPAGE TIME
Jurgen is complaining - pathetic!
NEWCASTLE DO SCORE!!!
FANTASTIC!
Long ball from the back headed on by Crystal Gayle and the shot from Willock took a Fab deflection for the equalizer as it finishes 1-1
What an ending to this match. Newcastle by rights should have won that one but they'll have to be satisfied with a point.
Willock has been a brilliant loan for the Magpies. He's saved them several points now. Newcastle are definitely safe now and Liverpool are well outside the CL spots.
LOVE IT!
Take care boys
I'll check in for the London derby if you're going to be around
Pool back to sixth and that's a huge dent of their hopes of finishing in the top four. Toon up to 36 points and all but safe
I'll be around for the London Derby
The ten man bees hold on to win 0-1 at Dean Court. Bees clinch a playoff spot while the Hornets will clinch promotion with a win vs the Evil Lions in the 10 AM kickoffs
I'll be back for the London Derby later after some grading.
Next up it's fourth vs fifth , but probably a bore fest as it's Chelsea vs the Hammers. The winner will be fourth , three points e=ahead of fifth place and four points ahead of sixth place Liverpool
In the Championship , like the Canaries, the Hornets make an immediate return to the Prem as they defeated the Evil Lions 1-0. It Saar was a key penalty that was scored
The Bees clinch a playoff spot with a 0-1 win at the Cherries. The Cherries and Barnsley are a point from clinching a playoff spot. If Reading fails to defeat the Swans tomorrow then the Cherries , Barnsley, and Swans will ALL clinch a playoff spot meaning all four playoff teams will be decided
Nobody relegated in the Championship today even though Wycombe and Not a Big Club are on the brink. The last spot will be filled by either the Rams or Rotherham
I'm back for the big London Derby. Here are the teams out on the pitch:
West Ham United: Fabianski, Diop, Balbuena, Ogbonna, Coufal, Noble, Soucek, Fredericks, Fornals, Lingard, Bowen.
Subs: Yarmolenko, Benrahma, Lanzini, Alves, Johnson, Trott, Randolph, Odubeko, Coventry.
Chelsea: Mendy, Christensen, Thiago Silva, Rudiger, Azpilicueta, Kante, Jorginho, Chilwell, Mount, Pulisic, Werner.
Subs: Arrizabalaga, Alonso, Abraham, Zouma, Hudson-Odoi, Ziyech, Gilmour, James, Havertz.
Referee: Chris Kavanagh (Lancashire).
In L1 The Tigers clinched an immediate return to the Championship with a 1-2 win at Abe Lincoln. The Tigers need one more point to be L1 Champs . Posh needs another point to clinch promotion to the Championship. Bristol Rovers relegated with a 1-0 loss at Fratton Park and Swindon relegated with a 5-0 thrashing at the Fake Dons
I am back for a bit
Off at West Ham
They're off from the London Stadium. Welcome back, Bob and Dave
Cambridge lost at home but are still in good shape for promotion. I think they need a point in three games
Derby losing after leading....Wazza could be going down
Pompey out of the playoffs by one spot, but only on goal difference. Oxford and the Tangerines slightly ahead of Pompey on goal difference. That looks to go down to the last day
Did you see the stupid Real Madrid president, Perez, says the 12 clubs can't leave the ESL. They have binding contracts
Also, Real and Barca were going to get about 60 million more than any other team!!!
HOW STUPID IS THAT
That wasn't a good result for Cambridge . Surprised they lost at home to Stevenage. Cheltenham now top after defeating Colchester 1-0. According to my calculations Cambridge needs two points from two games to clinch promotion. Even Bolton could be L2 title winners after a poor start to the season
They always say that Real and Barca are almost bankrupt.....how can they buy Haaland? Mbappe?
That' stupid and really ridiculous, showing everything that is an eyesore about the sport at this time. Perez is a greedy sod
There is about a 20 goal difference in GD for Cambridge
That's why I said 1 point
Barca greedy too. Good question about how they can buy players
I see what you're saying. I guess I was being ultra cautious
Based on the Cambridge logic , Southend a point away from being relegated from the Football League despite defeating Orient 2-1.Grinmsby two despite winning 1-2 at Oldham. Both have far inferior goal differences to Barrow and Colchester.
Of interest to the Two Dave's is Salford City, one place outside the playoffs. They're one point behind Newport and two points behind Forest Green
I'm already bored - why can't Leeds and United play every day?
Don't put United in the Leeds category....Leeds are always good to watch
United want to play the modern way
In terms of promotion to L2, the top three are level on points.Sutton United , Fawlty Towers, and Jeff's lads. Sutton currently drawing 0-0 at Eastleigh and will be ahead by two points if they win.One of the three goes up and the other two will be in the playoffs
Just to let you all know tomorrow is Sparky's 15th birthday. The battle of our United's is the start of the birthday activities
Sorry for all the updates , but it's a busy day of promotion and relegation
I'm back with my lunch to keep me amused during this borefest. At least I've got that and you lot to chat with.
Thanks for all of the updates, David - I've had difficulty keeping up with the lower divisions this season.
No prob, Bob. What do you think about Sparky's 15th birthday being the same day as the battle of our United's?
I find United one of the more entertaining top teams. You lot can't play like us because you'd end up in 10th. We get tenth and everyone says, "brilliant season!" Liverpool finish 6th and everyone says "it's a crisis!"
I hope that we give him a good show for his birthday treat. I'd take another eight-goal thriller.
That's a good point, Bob, but we used to be able to play like Leeds and win titles. The game has changed quite a bit the past decade
Cheers, Bob. That would be a lovely way to start out the birthday celebrations
There's my Golden Boot Boy for you. Gets a chance in the box and voom! Straight over the bar into Row Z!
These two boring teams two points ahead of Pool. Will fourth place go down to the final day of the season?
Sounds like Werner Klemperer is your GBB. He sure has been the Colonel this season
I reckon it will. One boring side against another for the Boring Cup.
Bob's GBB booked for a naughty challenge on Lindy
OH Ping pong in the Chelsea box then Azpi somehow clears off the line as it was almost an OG., but a corner instead
First big incident. Typical dinosaur football from WH. The Free kick is nodded on and they claim was cleared off the line illegally by Azpi. Nothing doing from ref or VAR.
Isn't this season's FA Cup Final the Boring Cup Final. It probably will be.
Jarred Bowen wins another corner for the Hammers , who have dominated the past couple of minutes
Crazy where a defender's handball and a striker's handball is completely different
The sport is being ruined
Can I get a point for Werner's bookings? He's probably got more yellows and goals this season.
I just heard that Moyes has been scouting sixteen year old Brazi wonderkid, Barney!
Agreed, Dave. That's a valid point
I think that would be a good tiebreaker, Bob. Do you have a chance of winning the shield?
Again.... a cynical tackle....those are the challenges that have to be carded with red!!
Christiansen booked for a cynical challenge on Lindy
Both of those have been on Lindy.
A Brazilian wunderkind would be wasted on Moyesey. He should be recruiting down at Hackney marshes where he belongs.
Eastleigh one up at the half vs Sutton United. Sutton now third , a point behind Fawlty Towers and Jeff's lads
Lunch is over and I'm back at the grading. It's crunch time for my thesis students so I have to keep on top of their submissions all weekend.
GOAL !!! WERNER GIVES CHELSEA THE LEAD WITH A TAP IN
One nil Chelsea!
From the Yellow Boot winner
Oh my - pigs fly! My GBB has scored!
Don't Sutton have mega games in hand?
To be fair, Sparky and Shadow could have both scored that one. Relatively routine side foot finish.
Chelsea 0-1 up.
First sustained Chelsea attack of the match. It started at the back. Werner passed to Pulisic , who passed wide left to Chilly and his pass was diverted in by Werner as the Hammers were sliced apart
Sutton with a game in hand on Fawlty Towers and two on Jeff's lads. I guess they're in pole position
Chelsea one up at the half and talkin g about pole position, Chelsea in the driver's seat for fourth place
Top of the Table as it stands
City 77pts 33pld
Utd 66 32
Leic 59 32
Chel 58 33
WH 55 33
Pool 54 33
Spurs 53 33
Eve 52 32
Wow, Sutton must have lost a few
They were ahead with 3 games in hand
Sutton's last few games
2-2, 0-0, 0-0, 0-1, 4-0
Chelsea one pointe behind Leicester
Foxes host the Eagles on Monday
Very deep by Tim Howard!
Can West Ham get a draw?
They could do!
I'm off to the pharmacy for a quick pick-up.
Scratch that - I've decided to wait until after the match. I'm still here.
The players are back out for the second half now. Let's hope it's better than the first.
Back for the second half as the bubbles are on parade
To be honest I thought Sutton had more games in hand than they do. Now one and two
I didn't listen to the half time show. I was at the kitchen table eating a turkey breast sandwich with hot Bavarian mustard.
The Bavarian mustard hotter than Werner and has more yellows than Werner
Coufal with a last ditch clearance off a Chelsea pass Mounted into the box
Go on, West Ham, you're playing at home. Give it a go!
OH! Flappy superbly saves a long range mounted piledriver then Bob's GBB shoots wide of a wide open goal from a couple of yards out
That's more to form from my GBB. Simple tap in and he hits it wide! LOL!
Come you Irons
I bet Dave didn't even miss those when playing for the Under Fives
Decent long range save by Mendy from Fornals
West Ham's nicknames are The Irons and The Hammers
I would get the Hammers come from HAM in their name
Irons were something to do with their history... of course... there are hammers on their crest
Not too far wide from Lindy from just outside the box after Ryan Fredricks had a shot blocked
That's interesting , Dave. The only thing that comes to mind id that a Hammer is used to hammer iron material. Not sure if that's the correct reason. I have thought of that myself.
Speaking of playing while young
When Matt was about that age we had him play in a indoor game. It was coached by high school kids and goals were hockey goals.
Matt was nervous about playing. He didn't really want to play at all. Well, the coach never showed up so I volunteered to coach. I went to the team and asked who wanted to start... everyone raised their hands...so Matt did as well! I jumped on it and had him start
Ten second into the game, he scored with his first shot!!
Scored 13 goals!!.....SHOW OFF
Flappy does well to save a long range mounted shot . Gathers at the second attempt
That's a great story. Sounds like Matt was better finisher at that age than Werner as a pro
I cannot believe that you actually like this West Ham side. Their style flies in the face of the West Ham Way. It's a travesty that they'll be kadoomphing across Europe next season.
I like them too
You are ver anti West Ham and Leicester
They attack with pace and don't care about just passing it around like City, Chelsea, United, Arsenal
Great story, Dave!
Do you remember the 5 a-side tournament that we played in the LHS gym. We were a magnificent side but I did my ACL playing in it.
One of Werner's better attempts, but an easy near post save for Flappy
