The Most Lucrative Match in World Football
Good morning, chaps! I'll be honest - since Leeds were promoted last season, I haven't watched a lot of Championship footer. But I'm here to enjoy this culmination of the Championship season, but the stakes are enormous. The winner of today's Wembley Final between Brentford and Swansea will, of course, start as favorites for relegation but they'll still have a season in the top flight. For Brentford, it would be a debut in the Premier League; for Swansea, it is a familiar return. Join for all of the fun!

Morning Bob
You beat me to it!!
I am absolutely a BEE today! Let's keep the Welsh out!!!
Brentford looking to become the 50th different side to playin the Premier League... quite a lot for just under 30 years
Already got my Plus link joining
Thanks mate
Morning, Dave - my pleasure, mate. I'm in the Brentford camp as well. Has the coverage started already?
Always the bridesmaids, Brentford have contested nine different play-offs without success and are hoping to make it 10th time lucky as they bid to return to the top flight for the first time since 1936.
Their opponents, Swansea City, last played in the top flight in 2017-18 but are slight underdogs today having finished seven points behind Brentford in the Championship table.
Good Bob and Dave . hear to join you and I'm rooting for the Bees too
The National League season ended this morning
Sutton had already clinched promotion to League Football
Torquay had already clinched second. Stockport pipped Hartlepool to third today with both getting wins
Sutton are up
Torquay and Stockport have a bye
Hartlepool will take on Bromley
Notts County take on Chesterfield
The Hollywood Boys' Wrexham lost out on the last day. They drew as Bromley won
Morning David
Yes, coverage is on
I just sent you guys a text of the Euros' TV schedule on ABC/ESPN
Thanks Good morning, Dave. Just turned on the coverage
Did you see the news that UEFA is thinking of scrapping the away goals rule.
I don't think they should but they should be scrapped for Extra Time of the second leg. Gives away team the advantage having more time to score an away goal
I'm on the coverage now. Why on earth do we need to hear from Shaka Hislop this morning? If I wanted a jerk chicken recipe, I'll tune in to Shaka's YouTube channel. But today...?
Teams in the tunnel under the Arch
Not liking both managers dressed like they are going for Sunday drive
Out they come in front of many fans
Both teams coming out at the same time
Morning, David - great to have you on board today. Hope you've had a good week.
Brentford's 10th Playoff try.....the 9 previous...alll unsuccessful
They showed great highlights of his display for Reading vs Bolton in a previous playoff final
He made some great saves BUT lost 4-3 after being 2-0 up!
Apparently that year, Reading finished second that year but had to be in playoff
Two national anthems today
Brentford wearing their stripes and Swansea wearing some light greenish color
5,000 fans from both teams
Speaking of shirt colors....I think the big match this afternoon will have both teams wearing BLUE.....I like it!
At least we don't have to listen to TT today!!!
And we are off....come on you BEES!!
The designers of Wembley didn't take into account the shadows!!
This is Cup Final kick off time
This is England kick off time for the Euros
It's a bit funny to hear Flags of our Fathers at Wembley. Of course, there isn't a national anthem for Wales, as they aren't an independent country. But still - it's a bit like singing "Danny Boy" to represent Ireland.
Back from morning coffee and giving Sparky medication. Here for the match
Glad both teams are wearing their traditional colors for the CL Final. I don't think the Swans changing from white to light turquoise makes much of a difference
The line-ups for today's match, just in case:
Brentford: Raya, Dalsgaard, Jansson, Pinnock, Roerslev, Jensen, Janelt, Canos, Marcondes, Toney, Mbeumo
Subs: Daniels, Goode, Norgaard, Forss, Ghoddos, Reid, Fosu, Stevens, Bidstrup
Swansea City: Woodman, Naughton, Cabango, Guehi, Bidwell, Fulton, Grimes, Hourihane, Ayew, Roberts, Lowe
Subs: Hamer, Bennett, Latibeaudiere, Freeman, Manning, Smith, Dhanda, Whittaker, Cullen
This match will also decide the PPP. I think it's between Swanssong and Red Devil. Swanssong , a Swans fan, needs the Bees to win to win the PPP!
All the home nations have their own national anthems
First card of the day
Matt Grimes booked for a nasty challenge on Sergio Canos
No VAR today
We can celebrate a goal without wondering
Looks like a lovely day in London for watching a footie match then going to the park
I agree David, I thing Swans could be in all white
Strange as this sounds, I'm sort of pleased there isn't VAR. That probably means not a ridiculous amount of stoppage time
That was a nasty one from Grimes. He needs to settle down. The Bees can't really afford to lose him early on.
PENALTY BEES !NICE THROUGH BALL AND SWANS KEEPER, FREDDIE WOODMAN DEFINITELY TRIPPED THE BEES STRIUKER WITH HIS HAND. BEES PLAYERS WANT A RED CARD. DEFINITE PENALTY
Penalty to Brentford.. keeper definitely brought him down!!
Never a red but a def pen
COME ON TONY!!
Top scorer, Ivan Toney, to take
ONE NIL!!!!
GOAL !!! WELL PLACED BY IVAN TONEY OFF A ROBOTIC WALK UP TO GIVE THE BEES THE LEAD
Penalty to Brentford!
Ivan Toney takes....
The Bees are 1-0 up!
No run up needed....pick a spot out of the keeper's reach!
Not sure , but I think Toney vs Woodman was a duel of Toon rejects
I don't like the approach but the penalty was right in the corner. Impossible to save. Great start for the Bees!
Jon Champion has the Bees promoted. Too early for that
A win here for Brentford would give the LOB Shield to Swansong. The problem is that, of course, he's a Swansea fan. Oh - the irony!
Did you see that Eddie Howe turned down the Celtic job?
Did you see Poch might return to Spurs?
Juve and Inter both lose their managers
Juve already have appointed Allegri
Bees only spell in the top flight was a five season spell. Four in the second half of the '30s and relegated the first postwar season with Leeds United. Haven't been back since
Naughty Naughton with a cynical obstruction on Sergio Canos. Free kick from Matt Jensen eludes everyone
I can't believe that we're going to have to deal with a month of this rubbish coverage during the Euros. Shaka Hislop in the studio, Jon Champion bellowing at us from his remote location in his bathroom.
FYI, for CL Final day.... I am wearing a UTD shirt....no one will see me tho...it is the grey one!
BTW, our weather is ATROCIOUS!!
Bob, is yours as bad as ours.... cold and raining
Eddie probably thinks he's going to land a Premier League job, possibly at Wolves. I think he's mad to turn down Celtic. Look what it did for Brendan Rogers' career!
Thanks for the update, Dave/. I had a feeling Juve would change managers. Isn't that a return to Juve for Allegri? I could see Mo PO returning to the Spuds. Not sure if Eddie Howe will return to management soon and what he would consider the right job
That's what we had yesterday; it's a bit nicer today but cooler than usual for late May. Any Memorial Day plans for you lot?
I wonder if they have hired some more guys for the tourney
They used to do a great job with the World Cups
Strange that it's cold heading in to June. It just shows the contrast of weather in a country this size
Thomas Frank is working his gum overtime today; he'll bite his tongue if he isn't careful.
We were going to have our old Via Lino neighbors come over tomorrow but have delayed it to Monday but might cancel that too!
Supposed to be rotten all weekend
BTW....keep this weather to yourself!
David, how's the new house treating you/
Our family doesn't have any plans for Memorial Day other than the someone coming out Monday to check the sprinkler system. We're primarily resting this weekend
I wonder if there is any way to stream the BBC coverage with Lineker, Shearer, Ian Wright Wright Wright and co.
TWO NIL!!!!
Great quick break
Brentford are 2-0 up! Nice break there, finished off with aplomb by Emiliano.
GOAL !!! BEES GO TWO UP ON THE BREAK. WIOTH A FAR POST TAP IN BY EMILIANO MARCONDES. NICE BREAK LED BY BRYAN MBUEMBO. ANDRE AYEW WAS TACKLED IN THE BEES BOX THEN SECONDS LATER THE BEES WENT TWO UP ON THE BREAK
OH! Nearly three up as a shot crashes off the bar
Oh - off the bar there from Toney!
WHAT A SHOT!!!
Off the post and bounced down.... wonder if there is goal line tech?
bounced on the line
Nice half volley from Ivan Toney from 25 yards out crashed off the underside of the bar
Swansea are rocking here.
I don't think this is over BUT if they get another one...
Is this Swansea's Swansong in terms of being promoted this season?
Marcondes was booked for a rash tackle
It's certainly a long way back for the Swans.
Great fact there
Griffen Park had a pub on all four corners!!
Jon Champion mentions the classic footie trivia answer:
Which football ground had a pub on all four corners? Griffin Park!
I'm guessing the fans made wide use of those pubs during the lean years! great fact!
Naughty Naughton concedes a free kick to the Bees
Swansea desperately need to get a foothold in this game or they could be embarrassed.
Brentford are considered a London club they almost like Watford range away from the City
Quite close to Heathrow
I guess they are.
A Brentford win would of course mean a welcome return to Elland Road for Pontus Jansson. I'm sure he'll get a warm reception from the Leeds faithful.
Thanks, Dave - I was just going to ask where Brentford is. So, two suburban London teams going up alongside the East Anglians perhaps.
Agreed, Dave. I think Brentford is just down the road from Chelsea Fulham , and QPR. Maybe slightly north
Listen to your keeper man!!!
A gift of a corner there
Will it come back to hurt them?
Thanks for sending along the Euro telly schedule. Glad to see that there isn't any streaming nonsense. But it's still a bit random. The England v. Croatia match - one of the biggest of the group stages - is on the Deuce while Austria vs. bloody North Macedonia are on ESPN on a Sunday afternoon. What gives?
No matter what happens three teams with animals in their nickname going up and none going down
Agreed. It will be great being able to watch everything on the telly. Strange about Austria and North Macedonia being on the main channel
I thought Jordan Morris might feature for the Swans , but is out injured till October
Bees win a corner off a long goal kick from David Raya
Champion and his buddy were so busy showing the second goal again that they nearly missed a third!
Bees have two shots blocked off the corner then a foul called on the Bees. One from Ivan Toney and one from Janelt
Poor back header from the Swans and the bounce fooled Bryan Mbueumo as he failed to get a clean shot off
Oh - Mbeuma was in there but couldn't gather it for a true shot on goal. Brentford could well be over the hill and far away at this point. Swansea just haven't been at the races today.
Coming up to half time
What did you lot make of the England squad announced the other day? I'm of course disappointed that Patrick Bamford didn't get into the 33. He deserved it for his 17 (would've been 19 without VAR) goals this season.
Sergio Canos called for a foul on Connor Roberts near the Bees corner flag
Ball lands on top of the net
I thought a foul would have been called there
Ayew nearly got a head onto that cross. A goal back would make the second half very interesting.
OH! The closest the Swans have come to scoring. Free kick from Hourihane and Andrw Ayew and David Raya went for the ball. Came off the striker's head and off the top of the bar
I haven't seen the England squad. Will that be trimmed down to 26? Surprised Bamford didn't make the squad
I definitely thought that Bamford should have gotten a spot at least in the provisional squad!
I still don't know why ObiWan doesn't get a sniff!
He would be great to have playing against a tricky winger
He doesn't attack well but he can defend....that's why he's a defender!!
TAA should play in the midfield !!
Bees two up at the half and looking likely to head to the top flight for the first time since 1947
Brentford halfway to the Prem
Half time arrives - Brentford 2-0 up and could be three or four up. Steve Cooper will have to sort them out in the dressing room.
Why do all the media(5Live, Talksport, NBC, ESPN) all think they need to be comedians?
I'm back for the second half with a second cuppa and a some chocolate bickies. A mate gave me a packet of McVitties Chocolate Digestive Thins. Never had them before but they're of course delicious.
The studio guys want controversy
They want yellow and reds
Sounds lovely!
We can buy the McVittie Ch Digestives at our local Walmart...we buy them often
Brentford on their way out for the second half
Swans already waiting for them
Yeah - the provisional squad is just for the preliminaries. Will there be pre-Euro friendlies? I think that they have to chop it down to 26 or maybe even 23.
Second half underway. Bees 45 minutes away from stinging the Swans on their way to promotion
If Brentford make it to the Prem, it is bad news for three of the four of us
Both Uniteds will drop a spot in the alphabetical table
Steve's lot still on top!!
The squad has been expanded from 23 to 26 for the Euros
Gareth named more with the European Finals still to be played
Glad I missed the halftime talk. I'm jealous about the McVitites
Swansea go close...should have scored
Here's that England 33 in full:
Goalkeepers: Dean Henderson (Manchester United), Sam Johnstone (West Bromwich Albion), Jordan Pickford (Everton), Aaron Ramsdale (Sheffield United).
Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Ben Chilwell (Chelsea), Conor Coady (Wolves), Ben Godfrey (Everton), Reece James (Chelsea), Harry Maguire (Manchester United), Tyrone Mings (Aston Villa), Luke Shaw (Manchester United), John Stones (Manchester City), Kieran Trippier (Atletico Madrid), Kyle Walker (Manchester City), Ben White (Brighton & Hove Albion).
Midfielders: Jude Bellingham (Borussia Dortmund), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Jesse Lingard (Manchester United), Mason Mount (Chelsea), Kalvin Phillips (Leeds), Declan Rice (West Ham), James Ward-Prowse (Southampton).
Forwards: Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Everton), Phil Foden (Manchester City), Jack Grealish (Aston Villa), Mason Greenwood (Manchester United), Harry Kane (Tottenham), Marcus Rashford (Manchester United), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Jadon Sancho (Borussia Dortmund), Raheem Sterling (Manchester City), Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa).
Oh - Ayew should have scored early on. That would have opened the game back up.
That would have really given the Swans belief
Andre Ayew should have put the Swans back in this match. Great cross from Connor Roberts . It bounced then headed wide by Ayew in the six yard box
The international tourney squads had been expanded from 22 to 23 a few years back but the extra player had to be a keeper
This year it is up to 26 because of COVID
Swansea at least look as if they've got the bit between the teeth now. Brentford sitting back.
Good run from Jamal Lowe but his final shot was woeful.
A few surprises in the squad, but those probably won't be part of the final 26. Two out of four keepers from relegated clubs and surprised to see Ben White. He and Ramsdale are sure to be released from the squad
That shot from Lowe was too high
I have a feeling that the squads of 26 may become permanent. Not sure that it was really necessary to add three players, albeit due to COVID
Who are the 7 that will drop out?
Will Maguire be fit?
I don't think J. Hendo should go....he hasn't played... although he'd be fresh!
I think Johnstone, Godfrey, White, JWP, Watkins and who?
I think Greenwood should go
That was the reason given
My apologies for not answering about the move. It's been a hectic week. We had our repairman move us and after three round trips we finished at 2:30 in the morning early Tuesday. Still have things in the garage because he laid up his knee and is out of commission until at least Tuesday.
I've noticed that a lot of Bees like to do a lot of acting after tackles
Yikes!!
Don't like teams that have to share with a rugby side
The lines never really disappear and the turf gets ripped up
Brentford need to wake up in this half
My seven to drop out would be Ramsdale, Ben White, Watkins, Bellingham, Godfrey, Hendo, and Lindy
My guess would be that the players that are on the bubble are Aaron Ramsdale, Ben White, Kal Phillips, James Ward-Prowse, Bukayo Saka, Mason Greenwood, and Ollie Watkins.
Brentford with a chance....Johnny Wilkinson effort there!
I know the players aren't better quality wise...but there isn't all the stupid passing around in this match
We hope to put our house up for sale by Wednesday. We're having carpet in the three bedrooms replaced with vinyl floor and the walls painted
Oh - Lowe on the turn there from an acute angle. Couldn't work the keeper.
Maddison didn't even make the 33
Sounds like a plan, David - best of luck with it. I hope you have a troop of people looking at it.
Both these teams look like passing teams and would the winner would replace the Cottagers in terms of playing style
Liam Cowen, A striker, on for Naughty Naughton,. a fullback. Definitely the right move by Steve Cooper
Thanks, Bob. We're hoping to get a good price for the house
Swansea throw on an attacker Liam Cullen for Kyle Naughton. It's time for Steve Cooper to roll the dice a bit.
Was that blocked by his own man?
Yes
Oh - that corner could easily have been turned in for a third Brentford goal. Only needed a slight touch.
Corner eludes two Bees then Ethan Pinnock with a shot blocked for another corner. Actually went off of teammate, Pontus , for a goal kick
Good luck with the house
Houses sell here within days!
Pontus now down and Thomas giving a Frank talk to his players
Big Pontus is down now having taken one off the face in that last attack.
Former Pool academy player, Yan Dhanda, on for Connor Hourihane
Thanks , Dave. That's greatly appreciated
More Swansea changes now. Pontus will be able to continue.
Connor Roberts wins a corner off of Ethan Pinnock
Same here - we've had several houses on our street sell this year. Perhaps it's pent-up Covid fever.
Goodness! Swansea are down to ten men!
It goes from bad to worse for the Swans as Jay Fulton off for a nasty two footed challenge . What was he thinking on that challenge on Matt Jensen
RED CARD!!
Get away Brentford players!
He slipped.....I don't think it was a red!
It looked horrible but it wasn't as bad as it looked
No VAR anyway
It will be hard to see Swansea coming back with ten men
A ridiculous challenge from Jay Fulton. He seemed to slip but then went in two-footed and raked Jenson's Achilles. That's Swansea done now for sure.
I don't agree with this guy... I don't think it was that bad!
Not sure, but I don' think VAR would have reversed that and it would have taken probably five minutes
He stepped on foot...I think he went in with two feet while falling
Both Tom and Matt agree with me
I think the Bees are going to play keep ball the remainder of the match
Janelt boked for a foul on Connor Roberts
Janelt with a cynical one there - gets a yellow.
Poor free kick easily cleared away by the first man
Mark Guehi called for a foul on Marcondes about 25 yards out
FYI, CL coverage starts at 1:30 on CBS proper
I am pleased there is a pregame but I don't know if I can handle all the numpties they have in the studio!!
Free kick from Marcondes curled a few yards wide
Free kick chance...not that far away but over
Closer than I thought
Is the match on CBS proper?
canos and Janelt off for Forss, the Finnish and international ,and Ghodos, and Iranian international
All change for Brentford now - players going off are celebrating as if they've already won. Always a dangerous proposition.
Yes I think it's on the local CBS
Agreed, Bob. The Bees not up yet, but fairly close
This loss will hard for the Swans as this was the last season of their parachute payments. They may have a massive clearout this Summer
That sounds brilliant! I hope it's a decent match - I'm a bit worried that it'll be a damp squib.
WOW! This is the Bees tenth attempt at promotion via the playoffs. Failed at the previous nine attempts
That's what I was thinking. Citeh and Chelsea not the two most exciting teams out there
Bees stadium announcer the longest serving in the Football League
Former Hammer, Winnie Reid, on for the injured Pontus. I thought he had retired
Sorry. On loan from the Hammers
I'm glad that this one doesn't look like it's heading to extra time. I'm starving. Kate just thinks I'm a glutton.
As David said....yes...on CBS CBS at 1:30
Bob, you making a thread?
Toney.... doesn't make it three!
Crazy shirt pulling in the box!
Would VAR have given that?
Since I beat you to the punch this morning, I'll let you do the next one. Sound good?
Will do
Of course, this match we are watching right now would have had to be moved if the CL Final was switched to Wembley
Tomorrow it's Tangerines vs Abe Lincoln in the L1 playoff Final. Abe looking to be in the second tier for the first time since 1961
I know the Football League Playoff Finals are always on this Holiday Weekend but were they always in this reverse order?
The L2 playoff Final on Monday is Morecambe and Wise vs Newport. The comedy duo attempting to make it to L1 for the first time in their history and New port for the first time since 1986 when they were in Division Three
Looking forward to the thread. I probably won't listen to the pre-game show
The thunder outside sounds like a person's tummy rumbling. Is that Bob all the way from WNY?
I remember when Leeds lost to Watford, it was on a Sunday
Bob, you called me because I had one of my Over 30s match
I'll be in and out until about kick-off. I'm helping Kate change her registration to NYS. She's had Virginia registration for 12 years up here!
Former Pool trainee with half volley that makes it halfway back to Merseyside
