The Penultimate Sunday
Morning, chaps! I'm joining the action late after a bit of a lazy lie-in this morning. Already today, Palace have won an early morning thriller 3-2 over Villa, which helps keep Leeds in 10th, while Spurs have won 2-0 over Wolves to keep their European hopes alive for the moment. Next up is a must-win match for Liverpool in their quest to qualify for the Champions League next season. Jurgen Klopp's side travel to the Hawthorns to visit relegated WBA. I'll be a bit in and out during this one as I wrap up my semester grading, but join me for a chat, eh?
105 Comments:
The teams now out on the pitch at the Hawthorns:
West Bromwich Albion (4-4-1-1): Johnstone; Furlong, Bartley, Ajayi, Townsend; Diangana, Yokuslu, Phillips, Pereira; Gallagher; Robson-Kanu. Subs: Button, Robinson, Livermore, Diagne, Peltier, O’Shea, Grant, Maitland-Niles, Gardner-Hickman.
Liverpool (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Phillips, Williams, Robertson; Thiago, Fabinho, Jones; Salah, Firmino, Mane. Subs: Adrian, Wijnaldum, Tsimikas, Shaqiri, Origi, Woodburn, Clarkson, Williams, Koumetio.
Star of the show: Mike Dean(Wirral)
So Sadio Mane is back in the side after his little barney with Jurgen last weekend. All will be forgiven if he gets on the scoresheet today.
Morning Bob,
I will be here and there
COME ON YOU BAGGIES!
Mane is mainly back because Jota is out for the rest of the season(a week)....why did he have to play on Thursday!
Liverpool's run-in looks exceedingly easy. After today's match, they've got Burnley and Palace. If they get nine points from those matches, a CL spot should be a cinch.
We're away from the Hawthorns, then.
Sadly, I agree!!
Of course.... Big Sam would love to knock them off today!!
Palace could cause them problems if they play the way they did in the second half
Good Morning , Bob and Dave . Here to join you. I woke up around halftime of the first match, which was the better of the two earlier matches
Morning Dave
Not sure if you all know but there will be a third UEFA club tournament next season called the UEFA Conference League. The Europa League will be shrunk a little as a result. How does that affect the Prem clubs?
1-4 still in the CL
5th and 6th Europa League
LC Winners in the Conference League. If the LC winner finishes 1st-6th then the 7th placed team will be in the Conference League
These guys are so pro Liverpool
Liverpool had a header chance and they go gaga
WBA just had one.... didn't make a big thing about it and said it was good defending by Liverpool
Another chance for the Baggies...offside but Arlot didn't scream like he would have if it was Mane
Good Morning, Dave. Just back from selling a bookcase
Looks like Liverpool and Chelsea battling for the last CL spot with the Cup Final rematch on Tuesday being the key match.
YES!!!
BAGGIES TAKE THE LEAD!!!
Please no VAR
GOAL !!! HAL ROBSON-KANU GIVES THE BAGGIES THE LEAD
He's on!
Brilliant
Everyone is cheering at King Power and Bridge
GOAL! Well, would you believe it! Hal Robson-Kanu pops up with his first goal of the season to put the Baggies in a shock early lead!
Great finish! 1-0!
Thanks David
I knew about the new tourney
What about the FA Cup winners?
Morning, boys - sorry, I didn't see you come on. I'm buried in the grading but have the match on my phone going at full blast.
The goal was scored in typical Fat Sam style. A long free kick was lumped in to the box then twice headed away then lumped back in and headed on the Perreira with a nice through as Robson-Kanu finished past the on rushing Allison
As far as I know the FA Cup Winner still will be in the Europa League. The only change is that the LC Winner or 7th placed team will now be in the Conference League instead of the Europa League. The Conference League Winners automatically qualify for the Europa League the following season unless they finish in a CL spot in their league
Torquay could only invite Desmond to Stockport today
Sutton Utd have a 3 point lead with two games to go with a 6 goal advantage too
In the playoffs
Torquay, Stockport, Hartlepool, Wrexham, Notts C and Chesterfield
I think the bottom 4 playoff and then play the top two in play off positions
Baggies move above the Cottagers to third from bottom which adds a point to yours Truly in the PPP
In Italy, Napoli scored two second half goals to win 2-0 in Fiorentina
They are one home win away from knocking out Juve from the CL
Thanks for the update Dave and a perfect description of the National League playoffs
La Liga has a full schedule today....everyone kicking off at 12:30....not the last week tho!
As things stand Pool and Spurs in EL spots and the Hammers currently occupy the Conference League spot. Wonder what Bob thinks?
That's an odd schedule for La Liga - are they worried about corruption?
No it hasn't Arlo.... Liverpool have only just made it interesting!
Arlo screams at the top of his lungs....because Liverpool were shooting
Interesting about La Liga. Probably because it's so tight unless it's due to Spain's televised schedule
I think it is good to have the last two sets of games to be at the same time!
I was looking at the original schedule for the Prem.... the midweek games coming up were supposed to be this weekend.
So Chelsea and Leicester were supposed to play each other
I could have heard Arlo's scream from a hundred miles away
Liverpool with a free kick chance....TAA to take
Free kick from TAA bent like Beckham, but off the wall for a corner
Another bloody modern day crap...every player tries to cheat and puts the ball outside the arc for a corner kick
WHAT'S THE BLOODY POINT
Arlo's obviously had his tea with honey this morning, as he bellows out "Mane!"
I would be okay with the last two rounds of matches being played at the same time
Wonder what Bob makes of the new Conference League. It's designed to shrink the size of the EL, which is definitely too large, but make sure the same number of teams are still in Europe. That's my interpretation
Arlo was right on the Mane with that scream
Salah equalizes for Pool
BUGGER!
GOAL !!! SALAH TIES IT UP.
Terrible defending!
Of course, these guys call it brilliant Liverpool
I don't know anything about the Conference League, I'm afraid, David. I'd have to do some research. However, at heart I'm old school, so I would prefer to have three European competitions - one for actual champions, one for cup winners and one for the also-rans. All of these would be true knock-out competitions, so that if City get knocked out in the first round by Olympiacos, so be it.
Bobby Chompers had a pass won by the Baggies diangana and it broke to Salah who scored with a well placed first time finish from just outside the box
GOAL! Mo Salah notches his 22nd! He's level again with Harry Kane.
Oh - Bobby Chompers has hit the bar now!
Pool nearly took the lead. Mane with a back heel that bounced off a Baggies player and Bobby Chompers with a shot that had plenty of bite, crashing off the post
Then Baggies have a chance....Arlo doesn't seem to care
Going to have a bit of lunch
Oh - Robson-Kanu was in again but TAA just about got back to cover. What a match this is!
The short explanation of the Conference League in terms of how it affects the Prem is that instead of three teams being in the EL it will only be two. The lowest ranked team that would have qualified for the EL or LC winner will be in the Conference League. It will be the third tier European competition and designed to shrink the size of the EL. Hope this helps
Pool three points behind fourth placed Chelsea while Baggies back to second from bottom behind the Cottagers on goal difference
Curling shot from Mane appeared to be headed for the upper 90, but deflected just over for a corner
That does help a lot, David. I don't like it. I don't see the point of yet another European "league" competition. I wouldn't watch, unless my Leeds boys were playing in it. I don't see the point.
European Cup, European Cup Winners Cup and European Fairs Cup/UEFA Cup. All simple knock out format. That was the best model.
The amount of stoppage time listed is an LOB blogging trio, but some how five plus minutes and counting being played
It's 1-1 at the half
Basically the EL should be a better league because a lot of the smaller countries won't even be in it. I'm with you on the Conference League
Half-time at the Hawthorns. Liverpool have 45 minutes to dig out a win here, otherwise they'll be resigned to Europa League action in the fall.
But aren't the CL and EL formats essentially designed to be European Super Leagues in disguise, making it more difficult for smaller clubs to succeed by guaranteeing "league" football for the bigger clubs?
The ERL will be a better competition to watch clubs from San Marino , Andorra , Wales , Northern Ireland, and Wales, etc. will no longer be in the EL. I guess the CL and El will now be basically Super Leagues with the Conference League being the rubbish competition now
Second half underway
Let's be honest - those smaller clubs from San Marino, Andorra and the like have never really featured in the EL beyond the playoff stages. This is merely a cosmetic tweak where European competitions need to ditch the super league model and return to the traditional knock-out format.
Mane scores off a cross from Salah , but it's disallowed for offside
I agree, Bob.. I think the clubs in the CL and El would benefit because there are fewer qualifying rounds and fewer ,matches. I agree with your assessment and sounds like a compromise to the Super League. I would like the knockouts being restored, but sadly the telly stations seem to be runnig the show
The Gunners will be in the Conference League next season if the finish seventh. Would Steve watch in that case?
Pool with a great chance on the counter off a Baggies corner. Long solo run put through Salah and with just Sam Johnstone to beat Salah shot straight at the keeper
TAA with that long run and pass to Salah
Like for like as Shaquiri on for Curtis Jones
Toffes vs Evil Blades will be on Peacock
I'm back with my lunch to enjoy the last half hour of this encounter. WBA are playing for pride here. Maybe Fat Sam's pride even.
I see that Jurgen has gone to panic stations, throwing on Shaqiri on in this second half.
I hope that Everton give them a right old stuffing.
Kyle Bartley with a towering header if but it's being chalked off for offside. Someone was interfering with Alisson's line of view.
Kyle Bartley thought he had given the lead off a corner from Connor Gallagher. The corner was headed down then Bartley diverted it past Allison, but disallowed because Matty Phillips was in an offside position and judged to have been impeding the view of Allison. I think Pool got lucky there
What are you having for lunch, mate?
The Toffees need a win to keep alive their hopes of qualifying for the CL or Conference League
Fat Sam throws Jake Livermore and Ainsley Maitland-Niles on.
Andy Robertson collected a long diagonal pass then his pass diverted out for a corner by Darnell Furlong . Inches away from being an OG
Those two were formerly opponents in the North London Derby
Nice long ball by Connor Gallagher put through Robson-Kanu and nice reflex block by Allison for a Baggies corner
Long range shot from Thiago not too far wide
The final roll of the dice from Fat Sam as Hal Robson- Kanu , who scored on his first start of the season,. replaced by Karlan grant
I've just tried to explain the Champions League and Europa League set-up to Kate - she doesn't get it at all.
Bobby Chompers plays the ball wide right to TAA , who cuts in then shoots several feet over.
Oh - TAA did all of the hard work but then blasted over.
LOL! CL didn't change at all . It's basically that some of the teams that currently would qualify for the EL will now be in the Conference League. I don't blame Kate
Great save by Sam Johnstone turning around a long range shot from Thiago at full stretch
Kate must be delighted to be in double digits. Not sure how that affected the PPP.
It's do or die for Liverpool in these last few minutes.
Oh - big chance for Winnie! Put it wide!
Wijnaldum inches away from winning it for Pool as his shot is inches away, coming off the stanchion after a nice layoff
A Barber Shop Quartet of stoppage time minutes
Will you be around for the late match?
This result will mean that Liverpool at best will end up with 66 points, so Leicester can assure CL footie by gaining just one point from the last two matches. Chelsea will need only one win from the last two. Of course, those two sides play on Tuesday in a titanic replay of yesterday's Cup Final.
Sorry, mate - we're wrapping up our adoption paperwork for this season this week. It's due on Friday. And then perhaps a bit more grading. Things should free up for me by next weekend.
GOAL !!! RUDDY NORAH ALLSION, THE GOALKEEPER, HEADS IN A CORNER TO WIN IT FOR POOL . NOW 1-2
Oh my word!
Alisson has rescued Liverpool's season!
It's over as Pool, win it late 1-2 as their goalkeeper headed in a late winner from a corner. Pool's Cl hopes still alive
Alisson is in tears now - what a hero!
Wishing you and Kate the best with the adoption
Agreed. A hero , but for the most unlikely reason
That's the fine margins. They were moments away from being consigned to EL football for next year - now Liverpool are in pole position for CL again.
That's it for me today. Enjoy the late one if you're watching.
The Blades have ended up 0-1 winners. Grrr. Ah well - they're still going down, down, down!
