Hiya, Steve! Thanks for getting us going this afternoon. This one should give Gareth a few ideas about his supporting cast.

Today it's Pickford, Alexander Arnold, Trippier, Coady, Mings, Rice, Bellingham, Saka, Kane, Grealish, Lingard

Austria has called up Klaus Maria Brandauer, Hedy Lamar, Headley Lamar, Romey Schneider, Kristof Waltz, Erich von Stroheim, Otto Preminger, Arnie Schwartzenegger, and the 3 blokes from Franz Ferdinand.

I see that the players from Chelsea, Citeh and United who were involved in European finals last week have been rested today. That seems wise. I'm not even sure that Kane should be risked today - might have been time to run out DCL.

Blogger gooner71 said...

I'm watching the Norwegians conspire not to score against Luxembourg. My boy for now, Martin and Alf Inge Haaland's boy are finding the Luxembourgers inviting the Norwegians to beat them and so far, no takers.

2:31 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

I definitely would not play Kane today. He's too big a risk of injury.

2:47 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Have you been able to access ESPN3 yet for the match? It usually works well for me, but I'm stuck in a Google drive training on Zoom right now. I'll be signing off with that around kick off time.

Hiya, David - I hope that you're enjoying the new place. Your Memorial Day photos on FB looked great.

Coverage Just started at the Riverside. Doesn't look like Gareth's strongest XI starting this evening

2:52 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Yeah. Watching the Norwegians vs the Luxembourgers. And in added time, Haaland has just scored.

2:52 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Thanks , Bob. A little stressed because it wasn't the smoothest move, but enjoying the place

Hi MUR, I've switched now to coverage from the Riverside. High time England played a few of these in the provinces.

2:55 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I studied the Austrian squad. Looks like a decent squad . Twenty two out of twenty six played in the Bundesliga this past season. Not picking them to win it all, but better than their usual squads

2:55 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Here comes the Three Lions

2:55 PM

Good afternoon, Steve. It's nice to see England play at a few of the outposts

Am I the only one that thought those guys in Right Said Fred were Austrian? I did due diligence this morning posting the Austrian squad and found out that they were South Londoners.

You guys are so poo poo about the NL

I like it....remember...you're banned from watching

3:06 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Wahay! I'm finally onto the stream just in time to see Jude Bellingham head one straight at the keeper. It'll be useful to see him - I haven't seen much of him yet.

The Austrians don't seem to have much ambition today.

3:09 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Hiya, Dave - how are you, mate?

3:09 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

The NL is an inorganic competition that eliminates any possibility of testing ourselves against S American and N. American, and African competition. That means every World Cup we're drawn into the unknown. More matches with Belgium and Bosnia just bore the pants off me. And no new bit of tin the end makes up for it.

3:09 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I just blew up a wee bit of snot chortling at the pun, David. Well done!

3:10 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Come on England... push forward more

The sport is so ruined.... BLOODY PEP

3:10 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I thought the Austrians would be more ambitious, given that all but four of the squad members played in the Bundesliga this season., but they we re poor in Euro, 2016

3:11 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Lovely stuff from Saka getting to the by-line. I could really see him as an impact player off the bench.

3:11 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Dangerous corner...why can't United do that...whistle blows before the ball hits the net

3:12 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

The ball's in the net but the whistle had already gone for a push by Mings. A bit of excitement for the Teeside crowd, though.

3:13 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Ive put the France/Wales on my computer

3:13 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

I like Mings coming in to get that head on goal and taking no prisoners. That's a proper attack from a center back.

3:13 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Great noise from the crowd now - you can tell that they've been starved of live footie for 16 months.

3:13 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Antonio Conte in talks with Spurs

I am not sure he'll go there. He'd want too much money for himself and for players
We are dealing with Levy

3:14 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Wales going to the Euros with a Interim manager...Giggs in trouble with the law

3:15 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

That's not good - head clash for Saka. JWP and DCL are warming up just in case.

3:15 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

3-match ban for that guy that put an arm on Saka. Refs have not been protecting him sufficiently this year. I want to see that change immediately. JWP is in this squad today and not the Euros? WTF?

3:15 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

The commentator says that there is a lot of uncertainty around England's preparations for this tournament. Is there really?

3:16 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Four of the 6 3rd place finishers qualify

3:16 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

That probably indicates that JWP is first one on the plane if there are any injuries.

3:16 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Just that England won't have all their Chelsea, City and Utd players available for either friendly

3:17 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

That was a horrible hack from the Austrian on Grealish. Where's the card, ref?

3:17 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

So is Lingard

In fact all the six players(not Greenwood) stayed with the squad because the lack of numbers without the three Final teams

3:18 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Maybe he's referring to a foreshortened training camp? Otherwise, the players called up know all about each other.

3:18 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I'm not sure what the point is, if Gareth doesn't have the core of his starting XI available. It's just a injury risk for players.

3:18 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

He didn't know that 3 teams making the finals....these were booked around the time every other country made up friendlies

3:19 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

I think the Austrians are a bit het up and need to calm down the tackling. This is not Austria's moment.

3:20 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Saka hacked down again!!

3:20 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Still no room for 17-goal Patrick Bamford, though (sigh)....

3:20 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Saka has a chance on the volley at the backpost. Hard skill to pull off.

3:21 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Nice lob in by Lingard, almost finds Kane but goes to Saka... volleyed over

3:21 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Again the Austrian bodies into Saka. He got a card at least but this referee needs to have a word with these asshats as well.

3:22 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I don't think players should retire from international football
I think you should be available to be picked. When you're not....don't take it personally

3:22 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - nearly the perfect through ball from Grealish to Kane there.

3:23 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Pogba wins a one on one battle in the midfield....oh....he's in a French shirt

3:24 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Are you thinking of Vardy, Dave?

3:24 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

The phone call from Greg Berhalter just ain't coming UWS. Just announce your retirement already.

3:24 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Wales are giving it ago against the French...they aren't playing scared

3:25 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Nice tackle there by the ref but he blows up for a drop ball. Far too sporting.

3:26 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Vardy now
Scholes

I remember a big deal about Keegan not being picked.
He just wasn't picked after WC82.... so be it

3:27 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Austrian just passes it into the ref and gets a drop ball for being crap? What?

3:27 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Berhalter could use some Nocito magic up front based on the outing against the Swiss the other night.

3:27 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I AM NOT RETIRED.... from playing!

I AM RETIRED.... from teaching!

I'd prefer a call up from Gareth first...me mum was English

3:28 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Grealish fouled by made a meal of it

3:28 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Another hack on Grealish - do the Austrians think this is a World Cup qualifier?

3:28 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

France go close

Well saved

3:28 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

You've forgotten that schoolboy outing for the States, haven't you Dave?

3:29 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

TAA or Saka to take...TAA to shoot...into the wall

3:29 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

We need to start scoring to calm the Austrians down. They're putting bodies on Saka, Grealish, and Kane and that's got to stop before someone gets injured.

3:30 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

VAR tells the ref to go see if it was a handball for the Pogba header

He stretched his arms to save a goal

Kane...bury that!!!

3:30 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

It was close to Benzema's shot but they were stretched out. I think the ref will give it

I wouldn't ....it's a FRIENDLY

3:30 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - Kane was in one-on-one with the keeper but Bachmann did well.

3:31 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

IF he is taking this much time... don't give it....he has given it

3:31 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

HE'S GIVEN A RED CARD TO THE GUY!!!!

RIDICULOUS!!
IT IS A FRIENDLY!!!

That is craziness

3:31 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

It is stunning that they they gave a red....give a pen but a red card!
THE SPORT IS RUINED!!

3:32 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Pen saved

3:32 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Back to join everyone and justice served as Danny Ward saves the penalty from Benzema

3:32 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Great save by Ward off of Benzema

Still so stupid about the red!
How will this help both teams!!

3:33 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Welcome back David

3:33 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I agree, Dave as did the announcers. Never should have been a pen. Nico Williams was a foot away when Benezema shot. I also agree with you about the red card being bloody ridiculous

3:34 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Does that mean Neco can't play in the group stage?

3:34 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

"denying a goal scoring opportunity"
How is a penalty not a goal scoring opportunity

3:34 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Thanks, Dave and agree 100% that the red card helps neither team

3:35 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I don't think the Neco Williams is suspended since it's a friendly. I also agree with Dave that it's not denying a goal scoring opportunity since a penalty was awarded

3:35 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Another rule I would put in..... GREALISH HAS TO PULL HIS SOCKS UP!! Almost as bad as players that pull their socks up over the knee!
BOTH SHOULD BE BANNED

3:36 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Pogba in the box all the time for France...why not for United?

3:36 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Pogba should be sent off. He should have scored with the header. If he had Benzema would not have had the rebound that led to the penalty

3:36 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

What's your problem with socks rolled down. That was standard practice for the flair players in the 70s.

3:37 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

If I were France, I would take a man off too

3:37 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Hate it....wear shin pads!!

3:37 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It's 0-0 in all, the Euro friendlies being played except for the Dutch vs Jocks, which is 1-1 at the half

3:38 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Not many played with socks down

A couple of QPR players

3:38 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I always hated wearing shin pads during matches. They're too confining.

3:38 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Burley all over MBapee.... for diving... totally agree with him

SEND HIM OFF

3:39 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Confining.....they are pads!!! LITTLE pads

3:39 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

GOAL !!!MBAPPE GIVES FRANCE THE LEAD

3:40 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Portuguese ref in the Wales game. I'm all for inclusivity with teams in a tournament but foisting their questionably temperamental refereeing culture is too much. Ban their refs.

3:40 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

The World Champs are one up
Mbappe with the goal.....cheats

3:40 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Think about it - you grow up playing footer on the playground and in the park without shin pads and then suddenly you're forced to wear them for a big match. It's like playing on skates.

3:41 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Will VAR check offside?

3:41 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Never bothered me at all
I had to wear them because you were hacking at me all the time!

Goal stands

3:41 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - Baumgartner nearly broke though the entire England defense. That was a wee bit alarming.

3:42 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Rabiot played a one two with Pogba then Rabiot had a shot deflect off Griezmann, which resulted in a nice kick save from Danny Ward , then Mbappe put away the rebound, just beating Chris Mepham to the ball

3:42 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Austria break into the box

They want a handball...it did hit the hand but surely that will never be given!

3:42 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

The pads these days have really improved. The ones that my neighbor plays the 16 year old league in seem comfortable and not confining.

3:42 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

England have not had that many shots.... WAKE UP

3:42 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I don't remember ever hacking. If anything, I didn't foul enough. Not a single yellow card in my entire career.

3:43 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I'm not sure why the match in Paris is being played in an empty stadium. High number of COVID cases in France?

3:43 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I had small United ones
I had sock ones

In college, I wore the Utd ones under the sock one

3:44 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed, Bob. I wonder if I should have fouled more. Never booked in my career. Just one lecture, but then they book players for every little thing now

3:44 PM

3:48 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

France vs Wales being played in Nice, not Paris, but no fans present

3:48 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

It's been all England in that first half but this second string line-up lacks the dynamism that we're going to need to turn over sides in the Euros. I want to see us really put the frighteners on sides like Austria. Only Grealish and Saka have looked lively.

3:49 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Laters, Dave.

3:49 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

I don't want to see Kane or Saka in the second half. Bring on DCL and whomever for Kane and Saka.

3:50 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A minute of stoppage time in Nice. Strange as the VAR review took three minutes

3:51 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Cheers, Dave . Great chatting with you

3:52 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Welsh corner headed out then a long range shot from Harry Wilson is just wide as France is one up at the half

3:52 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Yeah - totally agree - time for run-outs for DCL and Jadon Sancho in the second half. Gareth isn't going to learn much from this outing anyway. I suspect that he already knows his side for Croatia and that the only ones playing today that will be in that side are Declan Rice, Grealish and Kane.

4:00 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Teams coming back out now. Doesn't look like there will be any changes.

4:01 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Second half underway from the Riverside

4:02 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Bellingham hasn't shown me anything yet. I don't see the point of playing defensive middies in this one. Why not throw on a JWP and see what he can do.

4:03 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Word in the ref's ear about overzealous tackling I hope. He forgave far too much.

4:03 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I don't think there were any changes. I agree as well. It's friendly . Why not make changes

4:03 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

I agree about Bellingham. He was largely anonymous and every single time I've seen Sancho, he seems to want to be involved.

4:04 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Surprisingly JWP didn't make the squad. He would have been a good player to bring off the bench. How about mounting on Mason?

4:05 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

No Iceland or Albania in the Euros this time. Instead the Finns , North Macedonians , and Jocks.

4:06 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

That sending off in Nice was not very nice

4:06 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Mount isn't available today, along with the rest of the Chelsea, United and Citeh players who were involved in the European finals, so this is really just an outing for the potential subs and those who might just find their way onto the plane if there are late injuries.

4:07 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Austria in the same group as North Macedonia and a weaker than usual Dutch side. They should at least make the round of sixteen

4:07 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Given the f-all that Bellingham has done, I could get behind Gareth dropping him and adding JWP.

4:08 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Thanks Bob. I forgot about the players involved in the CL and EL finals. No wonder why this is a reserve side. I guess Kal; could play as an attacking middie even though Gareth likes to play him in a deeper role

4:09 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I can't really see it - I suspect that North Macedonia will be dark horses and surely even an understrength Dutch are better than these no hopers. They're bloody fourth in their WC qualifying group now.

4:10 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Lainer booked for a nasty foul that's not allowed in Saka

4:10 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Second half underway from Nice

4:10 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Lainer heads out for an England corner headed away

4:10 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Another free kick chance now for England to swing one in. They must take advantage of these set piece chances given that nothing else is clicking.

4:12 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Agreed. There's nothing about these Austrians that explains how they've qualified for any tournament action. I even think that they're s**t and they know they are. And that #23 should be put on a plane to the Hague after this.

4:12 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

GOAL !!! GRIEZMANN PUTS FRANCE TWO UP WITH NICE CURLING FINISH IN YTHE UPPER 90 JUST OUTSIDE THE D. POGBA PASSED TO MBAPPE , WHO BACK HEELED TO GRIEZMANN

4:12 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Trippier isn't doing his case any good by not beating the first man with that delivery.

4:13 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

North Macedonia and the Finns the longest shots to win the tournament. Sounds like they're in the weakest of the six groups. One win could be enough as one of the four best third placed sides

4:13 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

YES! Saka follows up on a bright attacking move and slots home from an acute angle. Finally!

1-0 England!

4:14 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

SAKA, SAKA, SAKA!!! 1-0

4:14 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

GOAL !!!A GREAT SAKA PLAYER SCORES HIS FIRST GOPAL FOR THE THREE LIONS . NICE FINISH FROM A NARROW ANGLE. NICE RUNA ND PASS FROM HARRY KANE THEN SANCHO'S PASS WAS SLIDE TACKLED TO SAKA FOR HIS FIRST ENGLAND GOAL

4:15 PM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Bob and Steve, after that goal I see what you mean about Austria, but credit to England for a nice move and this is not their strongest side

4:16 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Great finish there from the kid. As I said before, I'd have Sterling on from the start because of his understanding with HK, but at the first sign of the Raheem grumpies or if he decides to go AWOL from camp, I'd have Saka in straight away.

4:16 PM

Quadruple change from Gareth. Watkins for Lindy, DCL for Harry Kane, Ben Godfrey for Mings

All change for England then. JWP, Watkins, DCL and Godrey all on. Mings, Lindy, Rice and someone else off.

Sorry a triple change

Okay, Kane went off - well done. He had done enough just to keep up his fitness.

JWP for Declan Rice, so it is a quadruple change. I thought Godfrey , Watkins , and JWP failed to make the squad for the Euros

Blimey - Godfrey nearly scored an o.g. with his first touch in and England shirt!

Agreed with Steve that Saka is a great alternative to Sterling. A Sterling analysis from Steve on a great Saka player

Yes - they kept some of the original 33 around for these friendly matches. Actually, Jesse Lingard, who started today, was one of the players dropped yesterday. He isn't in the final 26.

OH! The Austrians nearly tied it up. Shot off the bar and the replay shows Pickford got his fingertips to it. That's a great save

DCL went in recklessly there and picks up a yellow.

DCL booked . Climbed really high and his boots inadvertently kicked Dragovic in the head. A bit harsh, considering it's a friendlt

Thanks for the clarification. That makes sense why Gareth kept some of those players

Oh - great cross there from Greslish. It only needed a touch there.

No worries - I still think that there is a chance for Lingard and JWP to get into the side if others pull out for injury.

Ben white on for Jack Grealish for an international debut

Good one, Gareth - Grealish withdrawn. He did really well today. I really am starting to think that Grealish may be a real fulcrum for this England side.

Former Elland Road hero Ben White on for him now.

Danes tie it up in Germany

It's concerning to not see Kal Phillips involved today. I suspect that the shoulder injury that he sustained right at the end of the last match against WBA may still be a factor, despite his being picked for the final squad.
