Bring on the Big Games!
Okay, boys - it looks to be an excellent morning of Premier League footer. Ahead of the end of a breathless transfer deadline window, we start with Man City v. Arsenal. Both sides have lost already this seasoan so they're under pressure, especially Mikel Arteta's Arsenal. That's followed by a load of traditional 3pm GMT kickofffs, including a London derby between West Ham and Palace. Then we end with a bang on NBC with Liverpool v. Chelsea, two of the favorites for the title this season. Let's be having ya, eh?
245 Comments:
We're away at Maine Road - here are the teams on display.
Manchester City: Ederson, Walker, Dias, Laporte, Cancelo, Rodrigo, Gundogan, Bernardo, Grealish, Torres, Jesus.
Subs: Steffen, Stones, Ake, Sterling, Zinchenko, Fernandinho, Mahrez, Doyle, Palmer.
Arsenal: Leno, Chambers, Holding, Kolasinac, Cedric, Xhaka, Smith Rowe, Tierney, Saka, Odegaard, Aubameyang
Subs: Ramsdale, Okonkwo, Tavares, Mari, Maitland-Niles, Lokonga, Elneny, Martinelli, Lacazette
Arsenal going with a back five then. Looks as if Mikel is just trying to frustrate Citeh.
Morning Bob
Morning, Dave - are you still pinching yourself about CR-7? Did anyone see that coming?
Despite everything, the Gunners are looking lively so far.
Oh - Tierney will a decent center toward Saka who seemed to be bundled over a bit by Cancelo. Seen them given.
I've also got Derby v. Forest on the telly. 0-0 so far there.
Oh dear - City are 1-0 up, despite Arsenal's bright start. Gundogan on the scoresheet.
One nil....you knew it before me!
I HATE the COCK...everything is delayed
How does that #21 - not sure who it was - miss that header?
I did not see CR coming!
I was just hoping that he wasn't going to the Etihad
I know - I can't believe that this one is on the Cock. I don't care if, say, Newcastle v. Soton is on the Cock, as that gives those fans a chance to see their team on the box. But this is a big match that everyone should be able to watch!
Oh - bloody hell - City are 2-0 up. Torres. This is not looking good.
So many chances for the Gunners to clear that out. Too easy. VAR check going on now.
Geez....Two nil!
VAR looking at it
The goals stands. Despite their 6-0 win in midweek, Arsenal are right up against it again. They still haven't scored in the league this season and have now conceded six. And it could get worse.
The goal counts
Test Match update
England just won the Third Test against India by an Innings and 76 runs
Got 8 wickets this morning before lunch
As for this match being on the Cock
.
Bloody NBC.... all they care about is $$$$
Is NBCSN still shutting down by the end of the year?
USA have shown matches so far and CNBC has a game today
I haven't heard anything
Oh - City walk through the Arsenal defense again and it could have easily been 3-0.
I hadn't heard that - does that mean it will all be on the Cock?
Meanwhile, Derby have taken the lead over Forest at the Baseball Ground.
Struth....no one is marking anyone!
Steve must be having kittens right now! I feel so bad for him
Is he still a supporter of Arteta?
I don't think it will all be on the Cock
Ederson being an idiot.... Oh how I wish that went it!
I HATE THAT CRAP!
Forest haven't got a point yet this season!!
Most of the NBCSN stuff will go to USA
I think he is - he doesn't see Arteta as the main problem. He wants Stan Kroenke out.
Is Ederson just bored?
Cedric catches Grealish there and picks up the first yellow card.
It does seem as if these players have stopped playing for Arteta. There was no reason for either of those goals.
Xhaka somehow found himself in the box there but he's offside.
Now it's Kolasinac into the book for an arm in the face.
Now then - Tierney breaks into the box and seems to be pushed over by Walker. Nothing doing. Arsenal could use the break.
The frustrating thing is that Citeh haven't been that dominant. The two goals were just sloppy by Arsenal.
Oh - bloody hell! Granit Xhaka has been sent off! From bad to worse.
It was two-footed for sure but he didn't have studs up. Harsh.
Are Arsenal fans starting to leave? It's the bloody first half?! They're going to come all the way to Manchester for this and leave in the first half hour?!
I was on the phone for the red card....could it get any worse!!
I don't think it was studs up either and it was all ball
He got the yellow card out first
By the way, you and Matt just picked up a point in the PPP for the Xhaka red card. Ayoze Perez was the first red card of the season on Monday against Leicester but Xhaka is the first in the pool.
And it's gone from worse to horrible. 3-0 Citeh now. Grealish made it for Gabby Jesus.
Struth....Arsenal could be rock bottom soon
Oops - I've just noticed that Thomas also picked Xhaka, so all the Nocito boys are in the points this morning.
Yeah - one more goal for Citeh and they'll be level with Norwich on GD.
Not sure Arteta can survive this drubbing. The heads are definitely down now. Several of the PPPers picked Arteta to get either the Vote of Confidence or the sack.
HT....Sorry Steve
Nocito boys all get points!
This is the last round of matches before the international break
When they return.... Arsenal host Norwich!!
A MUST WIN! Will Arteta be there?
We're underway in the second half. Elneny has replaced Saka in what would appear a defensive move for Arteta. Zinchenko has come on for Walker.
The international break would give the Arsenal board time to line up a replacement for Arteta, if they haven't done so already.
Timmy Howard and Robbie Earle were questioning Arteta for patting Xhaka on the back as he trooped off. I don't know why - like me, Arteta probably didn't see it as a fair red card.
Oh - Bernie Sanders was nearly in for a fourth. Good save by Leno.
Ugh - City are 4-0 up - Rodri.
As if that weren't bad enough, Sterling is about to join the party.
Oh - Torres inches away from #5.
Oh - now Zinchenko hits one from distance that could easily have been deflected in.
Arsenal now level with Norwich on -8 GD. Norwich is hosting Leicester later on.
Aubama troops off to be replaced by his Covid twin Lacazette.
Sorry...I have been errands around the house and taking a walk
Seems to be a busy day for me!
How good are City?
They got beat by Spurs and then beaten the bottom two clubs....at home!
I hate Pep so much!
He's out there acting as if he isn't happy
Such a poser
I'm not sure that we can really judge Citeh by this match. It's been too easy for them.
What kind of errands are you up to?
I agree with you about Pep - there's no reason not to have a big smile on your face on a day like this.
Grealish pulling out all of the party tricks now.
Maitland-Niles coming on for Odegaard now - he hasn't had a touch today.
Walking the dog, cleaning some floors gotta go get Kathy and Doug coffee soon
Citeh just knocking it about in front of the Arsenal box patiently. Really tedious stuff.
I hate how everyone goes so gaga about City
I find them really boring!!!
"dozens of passes and patience"....not a good thing in my book
What - like at a Starbucks?
Who do Leeds have this week?
Just looked it up
Turf Moor tomorrow....on the telly
Yes, her and Doug loves an Americano...Doug pays which makes it even better
Right now, Arsenal only kept off the bottom by the alphabet
That sounds like a nice Saturday treat.
Yeah - we're at Burnley tomorrow morning at 9 on NBCSN.
Forest equalize in the 82nd minute
Arsenal have at least kept the score down but I'm not sure that is good enough for Gooners.
Oh dear - it's 5-0 now. Another sloppy one with Torres profiting. He's got a brace.
Struth... five nil
Arsenal rock bottom
Good Morning, Bob and Dave. Just woke up and here to join you
Sorry about the score, Steve
Morning, David - how are you, mate? Still celebrating the closing?
Not liking City getting PLUS TEN in goals in the last two games
Already +9 in the GD
United have to hammer some teams too!
Don't take it easy against the Saints OR Wolves
Morning David
At least only 3 minutes added
Thanks, Bob and Dave. we're celebrating tonight at the local brewery. I was tired yesterday from the months of this process, but am now relieved
I'm hoping that Steve went back to bed at half-time. That was miserable. 5-0. Bottom of the league now, ahead of Norwich's outing against Leicester.
That is it
What will the Arsenal board do over the international break
I'm off for a shower - probably won't pay that much attention to the 10am kickoffs.
Ends all even in the Clough derby
I am doing some stuff too
I will definitely be back for the 1230 match
Cheers Bob and Dave. Looking forward to chatting during the big late match
I'm back at the half-way point of the 10 o'clockers. It's 0-0 between the Seagulls and Toffees on the box.
Jamie Vardy has scored away at Norwich to put the Foxes up and the Canaries back down on the bottom of the table again.
Villa and Brentford are sharing the spoils at Villa Park - goals from new boy Buendia and the Bees' main man Ivan Toney.
Fulham have taken the lead through Harry Wilson in the top of the table clash with Stoke. They're our next opponents in the League Cup at the end of September.
West Ham and Brighton are top of the table now on 7 points. They'll need to score in order to keep up their perfect records, though. Liverpool and Chelsea are the others with perfect records, but that will end this afternoon.
I've just noticed that our pal Yellows is livestreaming the match from Carrow Road right now.
GOAL! Demari Gray opens the scoring for the Toffees!
That's a similar finish to the one he had at Elland Road last weekend. Two for the season for the new Everton man.
And at the same moment Pablo Fornals has opened the scoring for West Ham. His second of the season as well. Hammers on top of the league with a perfect record now.
Well, well, well - Teemu Pukki has equalized for Norwich with what sounds like a controversial penalty.
Norwich are lifted off the bottom.
Wolves are now in the dropzone alongside Burnley and Arsenal.
Welcome back, Bob. Our Uniteds need to keep Wolves and Burnley in the drop zone
I'm watching Villa vs the Bees on CNBC and the Canaries vs the Foxes on Peacock
Hammers top , on goal difference ahead of the Toffees, but that may change after the late match
DCL has put the Toffees two up at the AMEX from the spot while Cally Wilson has given the Toon the lead vs the Saints
Connor Gallagher , on loan to Palace from Chelsea , has tied it up for Palace at the London Stadium for Palace's first goal in the Paddy Viera era
Hammers back in the lead vs Palace . Now 2-1 thanks to a goal by GBB, Mickey Antonio then Palace tie it up almost immediately . Now Desmond
Connor Gallagher with a double, now on a hat-trick
Terriers ow FOUR up , steamrolling the Reading Railroad. Terriers now fourth and the Railroaders a surprising third from bottom
QPR takes the lead vs Coventry and now up to second place
Mitrovic puts the table topping Cottagers three up vs the Potters, who are now fifth
Mo Elyanoussi ties it up for the Saints at SJP
QPR two up vs Coventry
Albrighton gives the Foxes a 1-2 lead at CR. Canaries now bottom, moving Wolves out of the drop zone
Then Kenny McLean ties it up for the Canaries . Noe Desmond and Canaries back out of the drop zone
Actually disallowed for offside as McLean had headed in the corner. Canaries remain bottom. Still 1-2
Bloody Hell ! Eight is enough. Why that many minutes of stoppage time at Villa Park? As Dave stated something has to be done about the time keeping
St. Max scores vs Saints to give the Toon a late 2-1 lead as they look set for their first Prem win of the season
A quintet of stoppage time minutes at CR. Better, but still a lot
Hammers vs Palace finishes Desmond. If there is a winner in the late match then that team will replace the Hammers at the top
Toffees win 0-2 at the AMEX. Toffees second for the time being
Villa vs the Bees finishes 1-1 . Now off to CR> Bees in ninth place
It's over at CR as the Foxes win 1-2. Foxes now eighth and the Canaries second from bottom ahead if the Gunners on that goal scored today despite an improved performance
It finished Desmond at SJP as JWP tied it up in the sixth minute of stoppage with a spot kick. Something has to be done about the time keeping as the Toon are denied their first Prem win of the season
Hiya, David - I'm back from doing some errands for the big one.
I feel really good about those scores. Leicester have consigned Norwich to a third loss thanks to that Mark Albrighton goal.
The late penalty by JWP means both sides are left with merely a point.
And same for West Ham and Palace. Leeds were actually trying to pick up Connor Gallagher this summer; he looks like an excellent signing for Palace.
And our draw with Everton last weekend looks really good given their 0-2 win at Brighton.
Should be a tasty affair this afternoon at Anfield and on NBC. Here's the team news:
Liverpool: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Henderson, Elliott, Salah, Firmino, Mané.
Subs: Kelleher, Konate, Thiago, Keita, Gomez, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Minamino, Jota, Tsimikas
Chelsea: Mendy; Azpilicueta, Christensen, Rudiger; James, Kante, Jorginho, Alonso; Havertz, Lukaku, Mount
Subs: Kepa, Chilwell, Chalobah, Thiago Silva, Kovacic, Loftus-Cheek, Hudson-Odoi, Ziyech, Werner
I am here for the late one
I'll take a draw...A win tomorrow would help United go top of both of these teams
5Live is being blacked out all the time right now. I can't listen to Sports Report or 606
I have just had a Live Chat with the BBC
This was their reply
Sports content does have rights restrictions, more so when you're outside the UK. At the minute, due to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics all content on 5 Live will be restricted. When the games end on 5th September, things will return to normal and you will be able to stream content that is available worldwide.
Back for the late marquee match on NBC
We're back on NBC for kick-off now. Lukaku tried to kick-off before the taking of the knee. Not very "woke" from him.
They're off from Anfield
Welcome back Bob and Dave. I'll take a draw in this match
Welcome back, Dave! A draw would suit me too, but I'd prefer a 4-4 thriller than 0-0 snoozer.
Interesting response from the Beeb.
If this match finishes 5-5 in the battle of the former Dortmund managers then there will be a three way tie for first between Pool, Chelsea, and the Hammers. Chelsea would be first by winning the alphabet soup contest
Romelu is not a popular figure on the Kop, apparently. ;-)
Agreed . That is interesting from the BEEB
Oh - the youngster Elliott with a raking drive that wasn't too far away.
Nice Pool passing , then a shot from 25 yards out not too far wide by Harvey Elliott, but Mendy looked to have it covered
Good, bright start from Liverpool; Chelsea are doing the Mourinho thing of hanging deep and then trying to spring the quick 'uns.
Mount with a nice turn there and draws the foul from Matip. Free kick chance for the Blues.
Chelsea's tactics don't Tukel Bob's fancy
Alonso wins a corner from the free kick and Liverpool are under some pressure.
Not one bit, David - nice pun, though.
Late match in the Championship as Posh vs the Baggies kicks off at 3 PM. Baggies will go top if they win by four or more goals
Cheers, Bob. Thought you would like that
Oh - big chance for Hendo on the volley - got it all wrong. Nice ball from TAA though.
Hendo should have given Pool the lead with just Mendy to beat, but miss hits a volley well wide
How can Lukaku be liked at Anfield....played for Everton and United!
The match is being played with pace....I like it
No Bloody Pep ball
I was being sarcastic - Lukaku gets a cheer every time he puts a foot wrong or is tackled, like there.
Oh - great control by Robertson and his cross nearly found Salah.
If he scores then he will be taking a Chunk out of the volume of the KOP
Oh - the corner nearly finds Virgil in the six yard box.
Agreed, Dave - it's been exciting stuff.
This might go well with the Abe Lincoln Netflix series. Abe Lincoln's Red Imps became the first team to make the group stages of a European competition as they qualified for the group stages of the Conference League. IS that one you could use in your classes?
I agree too. Nice fast start to the match
After tomorrow we start a two week international break.
GOAL
THE BLUES TAKE THE LEAD!
Nice header
GOAL ! KAI THE GUY HAVERTZ HEADS IN A CORNER TO GIVE CHELSEA THE LEAD
A two week break.....and then it is Ronaldo Time
GOAL! Kai Havertz opens the scoring for Chelsea, somewhat against the run of play. Great looping header into the corner.
0-1!
Nice corner and nice near post header, but poor marking from the corner
So who does Ronaldo displace in the United side?
Chelsea now top with Pool in fifth
Useless corner by Pool
Agreed , Dave. Glad Skippy signed for us instead of Man Scum Chiteh
I think he'll play up front and not out wide. Cavani will will have some rest
Chelsea break...Lukaku should have been played in by Haver
The answer to Bob's question is that I think OGS will have Skippy karate chopped into the United starting lineup. If Rash is fit I think he might sit the bench so Skippy can start
I agree with Dave. Based on the United formation he will be up front
Jorginho has been voted player of the year
SO STUPID!!
He does nothing except take stupid penalties
Having a bite of lunch now. Back in a tick.
I would LOVE to play two up top! A tried and trusted 4-4-2
Cavani and Ronaldo
Sancho, Pog, Bruno, Greenwood
Beat teams 6-2 every week
That's a great formation and would be a joy to watch
I'm about to have some lunch
Some fresh tomato sandwiches
Agreed about Jorginho except he does one other thing... Commit lots of fouls
I will probably have lunch at the end of the match since I ate brekkies late
Chelsea should have mounted their way to a two goal lead. Shot wide with just Allison to beat and poor marking by TAA. Nice foot work and pass from the Chunk
Jorginho looks bloody awful as a blond. He yells a lot too.
Wonder how the tomato sandwich is. An extra tomatoes can be thrown at Jorginho when he takes a spot kick
WOW! THINGS HAVE TAKEN A TURN FOR THE WORSE FOR CHELSEA REESE JAMES CALLED FOR HJAND BALL ON THE LINE OFF A CLOSE RANGE POOL SHOT AND SENT OFF A S POOL WIN A PENALTY DEEP IN STOPPAGE TIME
Mo Salah to take.
GOAL 1-1 AS SALAH SCORES WITH A WELL PLACED SPOT KICK SENDING MENDY THE WRONG WAY
Mendy booked for Chelsea and things don't Tukel the Chelsea manager's fancy as he lets the fourth official have it.
It's 1-1 as Anthony Taylor blows the halftime whistle. Chelsea players surrounding him. Something needs to be done about that as there is no excuse for that type of behavior. A fight nearly broke out after Salah scored
I don't have a problem with the penalty because he swung forward with his arm after it went off his thigh....but why a red card? A penalty was awarded
Robbie says it has to be a red....RIDICULOUS RULE
Whew! I'm back after lunch to digest that and this match. Quite an affair. Totally agree with Dave that it should have been a penalty and a yellow card. A red card really changes the complexion of this match.
But Chelsea should get a fine for the poor behavior of their players.
We are off for the second half
Chelsea blew it with the clearance.... Mendy came to collect and his defender took it away from him
We're underway again at Anfield. Chelsea have made two changes during the interval. Goalscorer Havertz has been replaced by Thiago Silva and Kante by Kovacic. Seems like Tuchel is trying to protect a draw.
Bac for the second half as it's 1-1 , but Chelsea will be a man down for the whole second half
Oh - decent chance for Jiota. Couldn't quite get over it.
I agree about the red card decision. The hand ball didn't seem intentional, so a yellow at the worst
Oh - Virgil had a go from distance. Mendy pushed it away and the chance fizzled.
Chelsea definitely looking for a draw with ten men. I'm surprised Tuchel is till on the pitch after berating the fourth official. Horrible conduct by their players
A rare attacking move from Chelsea comes to nothing. Lukaku really has been nullified by Virgil.
Interesting facts about these two managers . Tukel succeeded Klopp at both Mainz and Dortmund after being his assistant at both clubs. These two managers have managed in the last three CL Finals between the two of them with Tukel being the first to go to successive CL finals with two different teams
The Chunk won't get many chances the remainder of the match being left alone up front against the Pool defense
Long range hot from Hendo just high and just wide
Mendy does well to turn around a Fab shot from 25 yards out
