One Cocked Up Saturday Morning
Morning, boys! The footie gods have not been kind to us this morning, sticking the most interesting matches on The Cock, and favoring us with a load of dross. Ah well, it's the second weekend of the season and we've already got some fascinating narratives going. We start this morning with Liverpool hosting Burnley on Peacock. I'm hoping that the Reds put the big hurt on Burnley, of course, who are Leeds' next opponents. Then there are a number of traditional 3pm GMT fixtures, including Man City v. Norwich, Palace vs. the new boys Brentford, and of course our home opener at Elland Road v. Everton. All of them are on Peacock, of course. The day ends with a load of old rubbish between Watford and Brighton on NBC, for no reason at all. Shame, but join me on the Cock won't you?

Burnley memorably ended Liverpool's 68-match home unbeaten run back in January. Surely they can't do it again?
Team news out of Anfield:
Liverpool: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, van Dijk, Tsimikas, Elliott, Henderson, Keita, Salah, Jota, Mane.
Subs: Konate, Thiago, Firmino, Gomez, Adrian, Jones, Minamino, Robertson, Kelleher.
Burnley: Pope, Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor, Gudmundsson, Brownhill, Cork, McNeil, Wood, Barnes.
Subs: Hennessey, Rodriguez, Collins, Pieters, Norris, Bardsley, Thomas, Richardson, Dodgson.
I'm also having a look at QPR v. Barnsley while I'm charging my phone for that match on Peacock. Grrr!
Good morning, Bob. Here to join you for the matches.
Teams are coming out at Loftus Road, one of the only grounds in London I've never been to.
Morning, David - great to have you on board. How's your week been?
Pool fans singing the traditional YNWA
Thanks, Bob. Decent week, still tryin g to get over the loss of Sparky. How was your week?
Moment's applause for the 97th passing of the Hillsborough disaster
The Dean of officials gets the teams underway as he did back in January
And we're away at Anfield and at Loftus Road in the early morning action.
I'm sure you are. My heart goes out to your family.
We had our prep week. I"m really looking forward to the semester. I've got a really good looking schedule with some super classes.
Long ball from Matty Lowton intended for Chris Wood, but Allison rushes out well to gather
Naughty by Josh Brownhill on young Harvey Elliott
Free kick from TAA headed wide by Jota
Than ks Bob and wishing you a great semester. Glad you have great classes
Burnley are so predictable, launching everything at Chris Wood. That's meat and drink for the likes of Virgil and Matip. How on earth do this lot survive year after year?
Pool bailed out by the offside flag as Dwight McNeil had a shot cleared off the line by TAA. Not a good start by Pool
Jota might have done better with that header.
I did predict Burnley to go down this year as it seems like this is now an aging team
I have them surviving again - what was I thinking?
I checked the schedule and Citeh vs the Canaries is on USA. I might watch that one if I don't use the PIP
In the Championship, QPR look a decent side. They should be there or there abouts in the playoff mix at the end of the season.
There are plenty of other teams that could go down, so you might do well with your picks
Thanks for checking that out. One of my cousins' sons is being Bar Mitzvahed in North Carolina this morning, so I'll be on that Zoom session while taking a sneaky peek at the Leeds match on the phone.
I didn't pick them to go up, but it's normally tight in the Championship, so they could be in the playoffs
Mazel Tov to your First Cousin once removed. It will be a challenge to watch. I could could be watchin three matches if I watch Leeds and the two televised matches
That is quite a challenge, David.
Yes, we were hoping to get down to North Carolina for the event, but Covid put paid to those plans. The whole day's events are now on Zoom.
Harvey Elliott wins a corner off of Charlie Taylor
Wow! Barnsley have taken an early shock lead. I had Barnsley going back down to L1 this season but they've started well here.
Barnsley made the playoffs last season even though their manager moved to the Baggies. I was thinking mid table for Barnsley this season
VAR check now for a penalty for Burnley - nothing doing there.
Close range header By Chris Wood pushed away by Allison off a cross from Ashley Barnes.
GOAL! Jota scores his second of the season! He's such a goal threat for the Reds. First goal in front of a capacity crowd in the Kop for 17 months.
GOAL ! THEN JOTA AT THE OTHER END OF THE PITCH HEADS POOOL INTO THE LEAD OFF A CROSS FROM TSIMIKAS OFF A PASS FROM MANE SECONDS AFTER TAA MADE A GREAT TACKLE ON DWIGHT MCNEIL IN THE POOL BOX
aLLISON PUSHES AWAY A NEA R POST SHOT AFTER BURNLEY UNCORKED A GREWAT TACKLE
Then off the corner Mane fouls Charlie Taylor
Liverpool are top of the league now, with six points and +4 GD, same as United but with fewer goals scored.
Free kick from Josh Brownhill shot sideways across the box by Tark
On the Counter Nick Pope turns around a shot from Salah. Van Dyke heads over the corner from Tsimikas
I had Pool top , so things going as predicted.
Burnley fall to 17th, pushing Arsenal up into 16th at the bottom.
Barnsley scored by Dominik Frieser, assisted by Liam Kitching. . A kitchen theme for that goal?
The Gunners have a tough one vs Chelsea. Hoping they get something out of the match to move them up the table
Blimey - Barnsley have put a second one past QPR!
Barnsley two up at Loftus Road
GOAL! Mo Salah adds a second to Liverpool and his tally for the season. Liverpool in the driver's seat here now.
Nope - it's been chalked off for offside by VAR.
GOAL !!!SALAH PUTS POOL TWO UP. NICE FINISH. GREAT PASS BY HARVEY ELLIOTT OFF A PASS FROM TSIMIKAS . AS SALAH BEAT THE BURNELY OFFSIDE TRAP
That's disallowed and the problems that were supposed to go away didn't . So much for the lines being wider. Maybe by a matter of inches as only his arm was off
Oh - lovely chipped ball in by TAA to Mane but he was unable to bring it down over his shoulder. Tough skill.
Nice one touch Pool passing and a nice chipped pass by TAA volleyed over by Mane
Oh - Barnsley nearly add a third. What are QPR playing at? They looked so good in the first ten minutes.
Just to let you know, Elizabeth and I originally planned to travel to North Carolina once the house closes , but I'm not feeling confident because we would have to go through states with low vaccination rates
Accorindg to FOTMOB, Barnsley still two up
Here is something of interest. Yesterday Leipzig defeated Stuttgart 4-0. Both managers in the match were Americans. The first time two American managers have pitted wits in the same match in one of Europe's major leagues?
I need another couple of goals from Liverpool to lift my beloved Leeds off the floor of the league.
I'm sure that's true. It's Jesse Marsh at Leipzig, right? Who's at Stuttgart?
Nick Pope punches away a cross then Keita well over from thirty yards out. Tark the worse for wear off Pope's punch
Salah with another chance there but blocked out well by Ben Mee.
The manager at Stuttgart is NJ born Pelligrino Matarazzo. Stuttgart ran away with Bundesliga 2 in his first season and last season as a newly promoted team qualified for the Conference League. Was the assistant at Hoffenheim for a year prior to that
That was almost a calamity for Alisson, with Tarkovsky, the goalscorer last weekend, stealing in to head toward goal.
AN LOB blogging duet of stoppage time minutes
That's right - I think I remember hearing that during the Euros coverage.
I'm off for a shower during the interval. Must look my best on the Zoom.
Have fun. You will look great
Pool deservedly one up at the half. Should be more as one has been harshly disallowed for offside
I'm back for the second half now. Hoping for some more Liverpool goals.
Burnley get the second half going at Anfield.
The second half is underway from Anfield
Welcome back. Squeaky clean and ready to go
Oh - Barnes sticks away a tidy finish and starts to celebrate in front of the Kop before he's flagged offside.
Ashley Barnes has a goal disallowed for offside as he diverted in a pass from Matty Lowton
Barnes a fool for celebrating as the KOP taunts him for that and rightly so
The mouthpieces are Peter Dreary and Jim Beglin
Bobby Chompers, Thiago and Robertson all warming up for Liverpool now.
That's just as well, as Liverpool seem to have taken the foot off the gas right now and might well let Burnley back into this one.
Tark down again as a he was in the first half off a punch from teammate, Nick Pope. Now back up
Ashley Barnes pressure TAA into conceding a corner to Burnley. Corner well defended
We start our League Cup campaign against Crewe on Tuesday afternoon. I'll be teaching so I'll miss most of it. Hope we can give a run out to some of our promising youngsters.
Bit of a ruck now at Loftus Road, referee trying to sort it all out.
Thanks for the reminder, Bob. Hopefully Leeds can make their opponents look like a real Motley Crewe
That's what I'm hoping for, as well. The action should be on ESPN+.
Corner from TAA volleyed wide by Van Dyke
Sadly that match isn't on +. The two matches on + Tuesday are Terriers vs Toffees and Barrow vs Villa. Sorry, mate
Oh - Salah should have scored there. Cleared off the line and then the follow up header from Elliott went wide.
Shame - ah well.
Salah took too long to shoot as he had a shot blocked off a cross from Harvey Elliott then cleared for a corner. Two shots blocked off the corner from Tsimikas
The match on + Wednesday is the Baggies vs Gunners. Steve will be pleased.
Mane with a shot straight at Nick Pope and fumbled away for a corner
Corner from Tsimikas caught by Nick Pope
Charlie Taylor blocks a shot from Harvey Elliott for a Pool corner
Free header from Mane headed straight to Nick Pope several passes after the corner was headed away
GOAL! Sadio Mane smashes home Liverpool's second and this one will count.
GOAL !!!! MANE OH MANE! POOL TWO UP
Burnley now drop into the relegation zone on 18th.
Nice long diagonal pass from VVD to TAA the n he passed to Salah and his nice first time pass found Mane, who finished past the stranded Nick Pope
Burnley actually still 17th, above Palace and Canaries on the goal scored. Will be tied for last with Leeds if Pool goes three up
Who Mee ? Yes you Ben, as he trips Harvey Elliott just outside the Burnley box
Oh - nearly a third goal there as Nick Pope was flapping. Scrambled away.
Let's hope that's the case, mate.
Nick Pope misses the free kick from TAA and a header from Matip cleared off the line by Ashley BArnes
Pool win a corner then a header from Matip off Bern Mee for another corner
Like for like as J Rod on for Chris Wood
I'm sure you won't shed any tears of Burnley is bottom of the table
In L1 it's 0-0 at the half in a South Yorkshire derby between Rotherham and Not a Big Club. They were partners in relegation from the Championship
QPR have got one back at Loftus Road to set up a grandstand finish there.
Ilias Chair scores for QPR as they pull it back to 1-2 vs Barnsley. I'm sure he wasn't seated
Pieters on for Gudmunsoon for Burnley.
Like for like as Thiago is on for Keita and another like for like as Bobby Chompers on for Jota
Still hoping that Pool can stick another one past Burnley in the remaining minutes.
Thiago with a shot blocked for a corner . pass for Mane just too long from Salah. Would have put Pool three up
High nd wide by Salah from just outside the box. Tsimikas down after running into Jack Cork
Tsimikas back up
J Rod offside as he had a shot pushed around by Alison after a goal kick from Nick Pope was headed on by Ashley BArnes
Gomez Addams about to come on for Pool
Burnley making a decent effort to get one back. Let's hope not.
A Barber Shop Quartet of stoppage time minutes
GOAL! Charlie Austin has leveled it for QPR to save the day!
WOW ! QPR comes from two down to make it Desmond vs Barnsley. Charlie Austin with the goal
J Rod tackled for a Burnley corner
Ben Mee with a free header off the corner heads over and that should do it for Burnley
Joe Gomez Addams on for Tsimkas in stoppage time to ruin Dave's day
Nice close range block by Alison rom Ashley Barnes. Nice pass from J Rod then a long range shot well over
It's over as Pool comfortably defeat Burnley 2-0
QPR vs Barnsley finishes Desmond
I'm reasonably happy with that result, although I would have preferred to see them put a few more by them.
Agreed, Bob. Hopefully Leeds can thrash Burnely at Turf Moor a week from Sunday. That one will be televised
I'm back from doing some dishes to enjoy the first half action from Elland Road before the Bar Mitzvah starts at 10:30.
Two changes for Leeds from the team that was hammered at Old Trafford. Junior Firpo makes his full debut at left-back and Kalvin Phillips returns in midfield. Robin Koch and Rodrigo are left out, with the Big Koch not even on the bench. Cor!
Rafa Benitez also makes two changes from the Everton side that beat Southampton. Mason Holgate and Andros Townsend are replaced by Yerry Mina and Alex Iwobi.
Leeds (4-1-4-1) Meslier; Ayling, Struijk, Cooper, Firpo; Phillips; Raphinha, Dallas, Klich, Harrison; Bamford.
Substitutes: Klaesson, Cresswell, Drameh, Forshaw, Summerville, Shackleton, Roberts, Costa, Rodrigo.
Everton (possible 4-2-3-1) Pickford; Coleman, Mina, Keane, Digne; Doucoure, Allan; Iwobi, Gray, Richarlison; Calvert-Lewin.
Substitutes: Begovic, Kenny, Holgate, Branthwaite, Delph, Townsend, Gbamin, Davies, Kean.
Still no preview coverage on the Cock! Grrr!
Elland Road is bouncing ahead of this one!
Teams in the tunnel now - come on, you Whites!
MOT! Sounding great with the full crowd in.
Welcome back, Bob.
COME ON LEEDS!
MOT!
I'll be watching The match from ER on the Cock and Citeh vs the Canaries on USA
Nice moment of applause for the fans that we've lost during the pandemic.
Hoping for a big Citeh win against Norwich. Sorry, mate but I have to root against the lower sides.
Bob will not be pleased that Not a Big Club is two up at Rotherham late in the second half
Lots of rain ahead of this match. Might have an effect on the play.
Not at all happy with that one.
They're off from the Etihad and then from ER as the Cock is about thirty seconds behind
I'll be rooting for the Canaries even though they will probably be thrashed
Doucoure has a go from distance early on but it's well wide.
Nice overlap there from Junior Firpo, showing his intent straight away.
Much better start by Leeds than they did at OT
Oh - Patrick nearly in there but couldn't control it.
The Baggies take an early lead at Ewood Park
I like the high press so far - good start for us.
Nice atmosphere at ER
I fully expect WBA to return to the Prem next season - and go straight back down again.
Wycombe takes the lead vs Abe Lincoln
Loving the sound of a full Elland Road. Only 36,000 capacity - about half of OT - but they do make a heck of a noise.
The Cherries take the lead vs the Tangerines in a fruity match
GOIAL !!! FERRAN TORRES GIVES CITEH THE LEAD WITH AN EASY TAP IN
Every Everton mistake is being greeted with loud cheers.
That suits me just fine. I think that Norwich are bottom now.
Jack gets a nice center in to Patrick but his effort is blocked by Keane.
That does sound like a fruit cocktail today.
Wee Gordon Strachan in the crowd today - Elland Road legend.
Cite put together a twenty pass move off a clearance from Tim Krul and culminated in a long diagonal to Jesus and a comical OG as the cross from Jesus was volleyed by Grant Hanley off Tim Krul's chest for a comical OG
Raph gets an effort off on goal but it's easy for Pickers to gather.
Dear oh dear - I'm actually starting to feel sorry for the Canaries. Still, no sympathy. As long as they're below us, we're safer.
Correct, Bob. Canaries bottom, behind Burnley on goal difference. They have started against the two top teams, so tough to judge them
Brum takes the lead at Luton
Oxford takes the lead at Bolton as do the Gils vs Morecambe and None too Wise in their first ever season in L1
Not a Big has won 0-2 at Rotherham in the South Yorkshire Derby. Sorry, Bob
Colchester two up at Oldham
GOAL ! THIS TIME FERRAN TORRES GETS ON THE SCORESHEET AS HE BEATS TIM KRUL AT THE ENAR POOST TO PUT CITEH TWO UP
Luke has a go from distance. Didn't catch it but earns a corner.
I would like to see us use corners more effectively this season. All Leeds pressure so far.
Disallowed as Bernie Sanders called for a foul on Ben Gibson that resulted in the goal that eventually was disallowed. Still 1-0
I'm thinking that you are pleased by the start from Leeds. As I type a pass from Damari Gray was just to long for DCXL as he could have given the Toffees the lead on their first attack of the match
PNE moves out of the drop zone as they take the lead vs Posh
Tractor Boys take a real lead vs the Fake Dons
Accrington Stanley takes the lead at the Motley Crewe concert.
Cherries two up vs the Tangerines
GOAL !!! JACK GREALISH OPENS HIS CITEH ACCOUNT AS HE PUTS THEM TWO UP
I am very pleased so far. But I want a goal to settle the nerves.
The Canaries as they have done the entire match, sitting back ,allowing Citeh all the time in the world to pass about. Kyle wlaker with a long diagonal down the right to Jesus and his pass came off Grealish at the far post as he seemed to know little about it, but they all count
Cottagers take the lead vs the Tigers
Exeter three up vs Bristol Rovers. That's not idle gossip
Exeter now four up
Jeff's lads take the lead vs wasall on their return to the Football League
VAR checking for a possible penalty to the Toffees
That looked a hold by Mini Cooper on DCL. I think it will be a penalty. Yes it is. Sorry, Bob. Mini Cooper booked
DCL to take the spot kick
GOAL !!! DCL SCORES WITH A WELL PLACE PENBALTY TO GIVE THE TOFFEES THE LEAD. SORRY, BOB
Mini Cooper still arguing despite being booked. He needs to be careful as he's getting close to second yellow
Brum two up at Luton
OH!Long range shot from Raphinha just wide
Celtic three up vs ten men St. Mirren
Hand bags between Jerry Minor and Bamford. Both booked
Cottagers two up vs the Tigers
Damari Gray wins a corner off of Stu Dallas
Raphinha drags a shot wide from just outside the box
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!! IT'S KLICHING FOR LEEDS AS THEY TIE IT UP
Nice long ball from Ayling was volleyed on then Bamford beat Michael Keane to the ball and put through Klich, who scored with just Pickford to beat
Long range shot from Doucorre well turned around by Meslier
The Reading Railroad takes the lead at Coventry
