El Salvador v. US Live!
Greg Berhalter's USMNT side begin their Qatar 2022 campaign tonight on the road in El Salvador. These are precisely the kind of matches that have, in the past, tripped up the US college kids, so they'll have to be cautious tonight. There is a lot of buzz around this squad of up and coming stars from the European leagues, so I'm anxious to see them get off to a winning start. Join me from 10pm EST on CBS Sports.

I see a starting 11 of Turner, Dest, Adams, Reyna, McKennie, Sargent, Aaronson, Robinson, Ream, de la Fuente, and Yedlin. Really, Ream? REAM? I am not happy.
Good Afternoon, Bob and Steve. Here to join you for the beginning of the U.S. WC qualifying campaign
In the Octagonal , Honduras one up in Canada with about an hour played. . Panama vs Costa Rica 0-0 about a quarter of an hour into the match
Steve will ream Tim for sure . Is he the American Orban
I'm not happy with that line-up at all. Can't believe that Pulisic has Covid. Stupid.
Agreed, Bob. Pulisic definitely let the team down
Canada has tied it up vs Honduras. Now 1-1 . Both goals scored from the spot
Algeria thrashed Djibouti 8-0 . Did they get their boutis kicked?
Argentina now three up at ten man Venezuela
It's a capacity crowd of 29,000 fans in San Salvador
Hiya, boys - I'm here to enjoy the match with you now. Teams in the tunnel. This is precisely the kind of outing that in previous US teams have struggled in, with a hostile atmosphere in the stadium.
Welcome back, Bob. This is a true test for the USMNT
I keep hearing about this new generation of European based youngsters. So why are we still dealing with Tim Ream and Deondre Yedlin?
That's a good point, but those two are the exception rather than the rule, thankfully. The rest of the starting lineup is for the most part European based youngsters
Teams finally coming out now. Anthems to come.
Canada vs Honduras finished 1-1 while Panama vs Costa Rica is 0-0 at the half
El Salvador fans not exactly respectful of the U.S. national anthem
By the way, David - thanks again for the access to the streaming coverage.
The U.S. needs to do what England did in the hostile atmosphere of Budapest . Score and score often to silence the fans
No prob, mate. Glad you are able to enjoy.
I don't think their keen on the Yanquis.
Wow - the crowd is positively screaming out the anthem now.
OK, what's with the love-fest between Beerholder and the 4th official. Evening chaps.
They're off from San Salvador.
COME ON USA
agreed, Steve. I found that rather bizarre
The preliminaries are over and we're set to kick off now.
Yes, thank-you David. Cheers for the hook-up.
Gio Reyna shoots into the side netting from a narrow angle as the offside flag is raised
No probs, Steve. Enjoy
Lots of fireworks going off
Decent chance there for Gio Reyna but he put it wide.
OH! El Salvador nearly gifted the u.S. a goal. Pass from Yeltsin cleared by an El Salvador defender and off of brendan Aaron son inches over the bar
The El salvador n umber 7 refused to let the U.S. take a free kick . Why wasn't he booked?
OH! Nice free kick from Gio Reyna and Miles Robinson with a free header heads over. Similar position to when he scored the winner in the Gold Cup Final
De La Fuente tackled for a U.S. corner
This is looking pretty promising so far.
Ooof, the Salvadorans are no prisoner-taking tonight.
Tim Ream struggles to defend a Salvadoran attack and just about clears it out for a Salvadoran corn er
That challenge had some bite to it. Surprised that it wasn't a card.
Corner volleyed and blocked for another corner
Ream can't get his feet set to watch that go out for a goal kick. He's effin' useless
Corner cleared And Tyler Adams down off a clash of heads. Looked nasty by the salvadoran player
Oh - that was a nasty one of Tyler Adams and he's down for the count.
Sadly Steve, You're right abut the Salvadorans and I was thinking they would resort to the those tactics
And wasn't it Adams that just before went in late? Referee should have that yellow handy.
True, Steve - Tim Ream should not be getting near this team.
The Roldan brothers on opposite sides tonight . Chris for the U.S. and Alex for El Salvador
Fulham fans would say any team.
El Salvador wins another corner
Are they really brothers, David?
Agreed Bob and Steve. Steve would love to ream Tim. He's the American Orban
Oh! Rodriguez heads inches over off the Salvador corner
Oh - that header wasn't too far away. We've got to defend the corners better than that.
El Salvador have two things going for them usually; unchecked hostility and playing in a jungle hellscape. Tonight Tim Ream is a third.
I think I heard the announcer say that, but I might be wrong about the Roldans
We've lost the momentum since that bright opening five minutes or so. Someone's got to put their foot on the ball.
LOL, Steve. Humorous , but an accurate description. El salvador rarely gets any points on the road, so It's hard to see them qualifying
I think that there was another sibling pair who were playing for Switzerland and Bosnia or something like that.
Serge Dest cuts in and shoots straight at the keeper from just outside the box
And what's with the midfield collapsing onto the top of our defenders. This is very alarming.
I think Xakha Khan and his brother are the pair . One plays for Switzerland and the other for Albania. The Boating brothers too. One for Germany and one for Ghana
How are these midgets winning headers against our boys in the box?
Kevin Prince and George Boateng come to mind.
Yeah - you're right. It was Xhaka. And I'd forgotten about the Boatengs. Good for a trivia question, eh?
The U.S. should be winning alll the aerial duels , but they may be affected by the hostile crowd
That would be a great question. I would call it either Oh Brother or Brotherly Love
I would advise our forwards to drive into the box. They'll hack them down and offer us penalty chances.
That tends to happen.
That does seem like a route to a goal, yeah.
just a reminder on Sunday England vs Andorra at noon on the deuce and the U.S. vs Canada at 8 PM on FS1
Nice to see the Revvies' Matt Turner in goal, but I'm assuming that Zach Steffen is the #1 when he's fit.
The ref needs to make these calls too. He's letting everything go for El Salvador , but calling ticky tacky challenges on the U.S
Thanks for the program note, David.
Zack Steffen surely the first choice when fit. Ethan Horvath has just been signed by Forest , but he's been other than the bench except for a LC match that he started
No probs, mate. Definitely an important Sunday for us
The US dollar is the official currency of El Salvador. Hopefully they've not got a hold of any coin heavier than a dime to throw at our players.
Dest buys a free kick in a useful area.
Serge Dest wins a U.S. free kick. Taken by Gio Reyna and punched away by the keeper
I think that bottles of piss are still the projectile of choice in San Salvador.
That a wise choice by the Salvadoran government as their own currency surely would go belly up
The ref's not liking McKennie's style; he needs to settle himself down.
I was thinking the same Bob. Usually Gatorade or soft drink bottles
Decent chance there for Mondarosa. Should have been able to keep it down. They're looking dangerous on the break.
Brazil has taken the lead in Chile
Matt Turner won the Nations League and the Gold Cup. He's the deserved number 1 US Keeper while Zach develops splinters in his butt on the bench for City. Such an idiotic decision for him to transfer there. He'll never get a sniff from Pep.
That's the ticket, David. Nice hard plastic to help with the aerodynamics.
Brendan Aaronson fouled in the D and the ref waves play on
El Salvador wins a cheap corner
Oh - a chance opened up there for McKennie in the box but he wasn't greedy enough.
Don't forget D-Cell batteries. Very popular in El Salvador.
OH! Corner taken short . Roldan cuts in and his shot grazed the top of the bar
Oh - another dangerous chance for ES - Turner beaten and it just floated over the bar.
Definitely wouldn't want to be hit by those batteries
Adams is my bet to get two yellows in this one. He's frustrated that this ref has allowed the Salvadorans leeway.
Josh Sargent has been guilty of poor decision making. Not sure how he gets a start or why the Canaries signed him
Surprised to see that Mexico are making heavy weather with Jamaica at home.
Agreed, Steve - Tyler already had that waist high, late one earlier, which could easily have drawn a card.
I'm thinking Coach B may sub Tyler Adams early in the second half. We should call him three Presidents. That's what Al Prez says
Three Presidents - I like it!
Brendan Aaron son goes on a long run. Tackled in the box the Weston McKinnie with a shot that nearly clears the stadium from thirty yards out
Cheers, Bob. Thought you and Steve would appreciate that
Oh - I thought Aaronson could have gone down in the box there if he'd been more cynical. Could have bought a pen. as per Steve's plan.
Finally a Salvadoran booked as their captain elbows Tyler Adams in thew back
And not before time, one of these mugs gets a ticket.
Dest fails to control the long free kick.
The ES skipper Monterroza is into the book. Bit soft, that one, but I'll take it.
As they say in the Poem the U.S forwards need to give the ref a decision to make
Accumulation possibly.
Gio Reyna goes down in the box off a bout of head tennis as El Salvador hoofs it away
Reyna went down in the box there. The CR ref wasn't having it.
The announcer described Tim ream's clearance as Return to Sender. Steve might see the funny side of that or may like it since it was an Elvis hit
Another useful free kick now, won by Aaronson.
Training pitch routine to Sargent but he can't pull off the turn and shot on the volley.
Elvis and Scotty had better titles than "hoof it away and repeat."
OH! Better from the U.S. De La Fuente with a nice cross headed down by Josh Seargent and just wide by Weston Mckinnie. A minute off stoppage time
Oh - nice touch back there for Sargent but he scuffed his shot.
LOL, Steve. Also Elvis the King but Tim Ream not
It's 0-0 at the half in San Salvador
Bedtime for Sunshine
Half-time comes. 0-0. Not really a lot to get excited about yet, but that was true in the earlier match.
Well the best that can be said is that Beerholder frequently makes subtle changes that lead to goals in the 2nd half. But with Canada flopping and the Mexicans making heavy work of Jamaica, we really need to put these cloggers to the sword. I think Sargent is not doing enough with the chances he's found.
Goals scarce in CONCACAF qualifying today. Mexico vs Jamaica 0-0 at the half and Panama vs Costa Rica finished 0-0.
Very scarce - not great value for the punters.
I agree, Steve. This is a perfect chance to start top of the group and as you stated the U.S. do well in the second half, often from substitutions. Also El salvador may tire in the second half, which should provide opportunities for the U.S. to score
I think Nacogdoches Ice has been hitting the cannabis gummies in the studio. He was wearing shades indoors during the warm ups, and seems unusually calm tonight.
Agreed, Bob. The only two goals scored this evening have been a pair of spot kicks
True - it the US could pull out a narrow win on the road and others dropped points tonight, that would be an excellent start.
He's been like that in other matches too. I think Clint had been sampling the gummies and brownies since retiring
Will the U.S. emulate England and score four second half goals without reply?
Has anyone picked up a sub for Paramount Plus? With Arsenal not in European competition, I haven't been tempted.
The second half is underway from San Salvador
And we're back. C'mon you Yanks. Get it going.
I haven't so far . IS Paramount doing the CL and EL this season?
Back on for the second half now. No changes that I can tell so far.
COME ON USA ! THRASH THESE MUGS!
The amateurish feed from the Salvadoran TV is pretty frustrating. Why did the camera continue to follow McKinney's run after he passed it to whoever was out of the shot?
COME ON! The U.S. takes too long to shoot. Josh Seargent should have off the back pass then passes to Conrad , who also took too long and his shot was easily blocked
I think we're getting Paramount+ through David's account. CBS All Access just morphed into Paramount+.
I second that, David. Come on!
Their camera person sure seems to be jittery. Is it nerves?
That's great news . We should be able to watch the CL and EL then
Yes. They've got the English language CL and EL. TUDO has free to air Spanish language.
Horrible pass by the Sargent off a nice run and pass from Dest
I get Tudo , UNIMAS, etc. , so sounds like we're covered
Shot from Corporal Josh blocked for a corner
Sargent's just a little off pace every time or we'd be ahead.
The police sin g their shields to block objects being thrown
Corporal Josh easily tackled. I'm about to demote him to Private
Yeah - we were watching the CL in summer of 2020 on CBS All Access when it was Covid delayed. I assume it will be the same coverage with Kate Abdo hosting.
Mexico takes the lead vs Jamaica
Weird warm-up routine for the ES subs, as if they're on a girls drill team or perhaps training for the North Korean military.
That's inevitable but still bad news. A draw would have been a great result in Mexico City.
I think that goal was the first CONCACAF goal from open play tonight
If they weren't so threatening on the break, I'd call for Lletget to come on. Maybe for Aaronson who's not enjoyed his football tonight.
Yeah - I'd like to see Lletget. I haven't seen enough of that kid. And where's George Weah's kid?
Yeltsin obstructed . Why was the foul called on him?
I think Tim Weah is injured. Lleget would be good off the bench
Yeltsin forced to clear a teasing cross for a Salvador corner
PHEW! Free header from the corner well saved by Matt Turner . Their first shot on target this match
Really shocking defending that leads to a near thing for them.
Oh - good save from Turner there. I think that might have been an own goal.
Gio nearly feeding Aaronson there.
El Salvador with a double change
The commentator just named de la Fuente who I'd forgotten was on the pitch. He's the one that should be yanked for Lletget.
Too bad - I thought Monterroza might be good for a second yellow. But he's replaced.
The crowd starts the Ole routine. You're at 0-0, you numpties.
Tim Ream gifts possession , but thankfully Matt Turner caught the deflected cross
They are definitely numpties
Poor stuff from Yedlin.
Now Yedlin looks like he's tweaked something.
Sargent is withdrawn - Pefok on for him. And Robinson on for Dest. Not sure why they're getting whistled.
Cochleae B about to make a triple change. Pefok for Sargent . Anthony Robinson for Dest.Acosta for De La fuentes
Through ball from Gio Reyna just too long for Aaronson
Oh - Aaronson nearly played in there. The ball through was just a bit too heavy.
Weston McKinnie the first U.S. player booked
The ref needs to quit being conned by the Salvadoran players flopping down
Yeltsin now booked for the U.S.
Jamaica ties it up in Mexico City. That's great news
Totally agree, David - I was just about to comment about that. And of course the crowd is egging the ref on. No it's Yedlin into the book.
Fantastic news out of Mexico City.
Matt Turner catches the long free kick in a crowd
Great catch by Turner. He's been a rock tonight.
El salvador long shot well wide after a cross was headed out
OH! Nice cross by Gio Reyna headed well wide by Weston McKinnie
Sorry, the guest dog needed some attention. Too bad that wasn't on target.
Bloody hell! Weston must bury that header. That was the chance!
Stupid foul by Aaronson on Larin
The guest dog sounds like he's having fun on his visit
More subs for the home side now.
OH! Nice run and cross by McKinnie and the keeper makes a great save off the header from Acosta then cleared for a U.S. corner
Oh - another big chance there. Somehow scrambled away by Gonzalez.
Guest dogs love it here. Willow is the only dog I've ever known that starts whining because she wants us to go to be by 11pm. Eric just trooped through and has taken her to his room. She's a young one too so it's unusual.
US knocking on the door, for sure. Just one goal and we can escape this hellhole with three points.
Well, boys, I'm going to be in and out for the last ten minutes or so, as Kate's settling in for some late night telly.
Chris Roldan for Aaronson and Benny and the Lletgets for Yeltsin on the final rolls of the dice for Coach B
McKennie has not done the string pulling he does when he has Pulisic in front of him. I hope Lletget can do better and play someone in.
Hope we can score late as we did in the Gold Cup
Please say hello to Kate
Cross from lletget headed well over by Acosta
Acosta with a cynical block and of course the Salvador player makes a meal of it
Uh-oh, Adams kind of sized that guy up for a still arm. Lucky not to get a card.
