England Away in Andorra

Gareth Southgate's England team have a lovely away day in the Pyrenees this evening for a World Cup qualifier against Andorra. England have had a strong start to their Qatar 2022 qualifying campaign, with five wins a draw, and sit on top of Group I with 16 points, four points ahead of their nearest rival Albania. Fans will expect a fairly easy outing and some, but that will largely depend on the way that Southgate sets up his team. It's time release the hounds, Gareth. Come on, England!

Afternoon, chaps - it's a distinctly B-team looking first XI from Gareth. Here are the teams in full.

Andorra: Gomes, Jesus Rubio, Christian Garcia, Llovera, Marc Garcia, Jordi Rubio, Rebes, Vales, Xavier Vieira, Cristian Martinez, Sanchez.
Subs: Emili Garcia, Iker, Moreno, Cervos, De Pablos, Fernandez, Pujol, Pires, Lima, Alaez.

England: Johnstone, Trippier, Stones, Coady, Chilwell, Foden, Ward-Prowse, Lingard, Saka, Abraham, Sancho.
Subs: Rice, Mings, Tomori, Ramsdale, Kane, Henderson, Sterling, Watkins, Mount, Walker, Grealish, Pickford.

Referee: Kateryna Monzul (Ukraine).

The coverage has started on the Plus. Looks as if the small fire that had started at one of the ground earlier has been snuffed out and the teams are out for the anthems.

I like the balance of this side with a straight forward back four with lots of attacking potential from both Chilly and Trips, JWP as the holding player in midfielder and then lots of attacking thrust from Lingard, Foden, Saka and Sancho and Abraham as the lone striker. Let's hope that they can fill their boots tonight.

Blogger The Blue Devil said...

And Andorra get us going then - come on, England!

2:47 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Saka earns England an early free kick then. These set pieces could be a useful outlet for England tonight with JWP over the dead balls.

2:48 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - great ball in there from JWP and Coady nearly got on the end of it. Cleared out for a corner.

2:48 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

And another free kick chance now out wide left. We can see a pattern already.

2:50 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Total pressure by England already.

2:51 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - lovely ball over the top from Foden to Chilly but the Chelsea man took a heavy touch and the keeper was able to smuggle it away.

2:51 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Ah - Lingard had a chance to play Saka in there but the ball was too heavy.

2:59 PM

Andorra are giving up a lot of set pieces - surely England will be able to score from some of these if the deliveries are decent.

Tammy should have scored 3-4 by now. I'm not impressed.

Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Oh - lovely stuff from Sancho and he set up his clubmate for a shot.

3:14 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Wish it would happen!!

Hey, England could host it in the summer!

3:14 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Not impressed either - Tammy should be running up his numbers tonight. No excuses.

3:15 PM

That schedule would suit me just fine. No way am I going to get to watch anything until the Winter Break if it's in December. I"ll miss most of the group stage.

Stones misses a header!
Of course, he hasn't played a minute for City in the League

A possession stat from the Guardian just for you, Dave:

Andorra’s possession stat has now dipped to 16 percent.

LOL!

3:21 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Never looked at the line up...were there two defensive middies?

3:21 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

No - just JWP, who's actually fairly attacking.

3:22 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

The Andys have a free kick....cleared

3:23 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

England just seem so casual out there - I want a bit more urgency to the attacking.

3:23 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Good...I hate it when managers have formation and STICK with it no matter what

Sancho has been a 100% more dangerous than he has been for United

3:24 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Why wouldn't you want to go and try and score as many as you can

3:24 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

You can imagine that HK wants thirty minutes to go after this mob in the second half. He's thinking about records at this point.

3:25 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Agreed. All of the players forward of JWP should score. And Saka does. Right down the keeper's throat. Lovely.

3:26 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

TWO NIL
Saka with a nice finish!

3:26 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

That's my thinking, too, Dave - how many better chances will Tammy Abraham get?

Yes! Saka curls in England's second. Great ball from Foden.

0-2!

Stones is in the book

3:28 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

I don't get that card. What was that for?

3:29 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

A bit of nonsense at the back from Johnstone now just to give the Andys a bit of hope.

3:30 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Somebody's Dad just looks like he wants this out of the way so that he can get his chops around a late night paella and glass of sangria.

3:35 PM

Half time in Andorra now and things are just starting to boil over now. No need for that - England are 0-2 up and should add to that in the second half.

3:35 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Sancho bashed the guy in the face with his shoulder right in front of the ref. What's she supposed to do otherwise?

3:36 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Teams out for the second half

3:50 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

After this one, England have a home match against Hungary on Tuesday night and then a home match against Albania and away to San Marino in November to wrap up qualifying. You'd have to think that's nine more points for a total of 28 points.

3:50 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

No changes at half-time, so HK will have to wait to get his chance.

3:51 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

Why would you play HK in this? Plastic pitch, and defenders with nothing more to do with themselves than welly into him.

3:52 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Scores at HT in the other games in England's group
Poland 2 San Marino 0
Hungary 0 Albania 0

As it stands with three games to go
England 19
Poland 14
Albania 13
Hungary 11
Andorra 3
San Marino 0

3:53 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Come on England....meaningless passing now

Try and attack and score

3:55 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I wouldn't, but I'm assuming he's anxious to get closer to Rooney's goalscoring record, so a match against Andorra has got to have him salivating.

3:56 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Based on that glance at the bench, it looks as if the defenders are not going to be used tonight.

3:58 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Bloody hell, Tammy!

3:59 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

England are boring me!
I know Andorra are just sitting back but get the ball wide
Get the ball in the box
Take some shots

4:02 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Another miss from Tammy - the offside flag spares his blushes.

4:02 PM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Finally.... a ball in the box and it's a goal

England have scored a third as do Poland

4:04 PM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Finally! Tammy nips in to touch home Sancho's cross. 0-3!

4:04 PM

That should be a straight red!! Not even a second yellow!

4:11 PM

4:12 PM
