The League Cup Final Live!
Morning, boys - I come to you with a heavy heart today, with the Bielsa news still sinking in. But the footie world rolls on and it's League Cup Final time - the first big silverware of the season. So, I'm skipping the morning match with West Ham and Wolves but I'll be here at 11:30 to try to enjoy Chelsea v. Liverpool at Wembley.
Join me for the match, eh?

Good Morning, Bob. Thanks for getting us started. As expected it's been match of few chances at the London Stadium with the score 0-0 in the 54th minute. Declan Rice had a curling shot come off the post in the first half while Hwang Chung tonight had a shot go just wide from the edge of the box for Wolves seconds before halftime
As Bob stated the sad news is the sacking of Bielsa . According to the "experts" in the studio a new manager is expected to be named tomorrow. The name I heard was American manager, Jesse Marsch, who has managed in the Red Bulls organization with NY Red Bulls, Salzburg, and Leipzig. He wasn't very successful with Leipzig, but apparently did well elsewhere
The marquee matches the LC Final kicking off from Wembley at 11:30 AM . It's Liverpool vs Chelsea with both clubs managed by two German former Dortmund managers
GOAL ! SOUCEK GIVES THE HAMMERS THE LEAD
It came off a throw taken by Aaron Cresswell to Pablo Fornals. Cresswell got the ball back , passed to Antonio who passed to a wide open Soucek for an easy tap in
Danny Podence has come on for Drink Cow
Back to the LC Final and Tommy Tuchel admitted that the situation with Roman owning the club and being Russian has been a major distraction to the players, given that Russian assets in the U.S. and their major allies have been liquidated. Roman hading over stewardship to the Chelsea Charitable Organization is seen as a token gesture, designed to protect his assets even though Roman claims he's doing what's in the club's best interests. Advantage Liverpool?
Hammers now in fifth place ahead of the Gunners on goal difference, but the Gunners have played three fewer matches. They have some tough matches to make up though
In the SPL Celtic were held 0-0 at Hibs while Rangers two up vs Motherwell midway through the first half. As things stand Celtic's lead at the top over Rangers is down to a point
Aaron Cresswell down with possibly an injured knee
Play resumes and Cresswell is back on the pitch
The final roll of the dice from Bruno Lager and instead of putting on an extra striker swaps one for another as Raul Jimenez on for Hwang Chung Tonight during the afternoon
First booking fo the match from Anthony Taylor as Antonio booked for a challenge on Raul Jimenez. That looked soft
Davie Moyes shutting up shop as we enter stoppage time and Antonio pickled off the pitch by Vlasic . A trio of stoppage time minutes
Dioup on for Fornals deep in stoppage time to ruin Dave's day.
It's over and the Hammers have defeated the Wolves 1-0
Next is the LC Final kicking off in about 35 minutes
Morning, David - thanks for joining me for this one. I'm back with my second cuppa to enjoy this one. Teams are coming out now.
I switched over top plus on the ROKU. with Frank Le Bouef giving his analysis .Teams now walking on to the wembley pitch
The teams for the League Cup Final:
Liverpool: Kelleher, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Henderson, Thiago, Diaz, Salah, Mane. Subs: Alisson, Konate, Tsimikas, Milner, Keita, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Minamino, Jota, Origi.
Chelsea: Mendy, Chalobah, Silva, Rudiger, Azpilicueta, Kante, Kovacic, Alonso, Mount, Havertz, Pulisic. Subs: Kepa, James, Sarr, Jorginho, Loftus-Cheek, Saul, Hudson-Odoi, Lukaku, Werner.
Referee: Stuart Attwell.
Good Morning, Bob. Glad to join you. We went out for breakfast on a damp, dreary, rainy morning.
Nice moment here with "Football Stands Together" signs in Ukrainian colors being displayed.
I hope that Liverpool can strike a blow against the Russian oligarchy today.
The match being overshadowed by the mess caused by Roman and now the Chelsea charitable foundation declining stewardship due to not wanting to be a front for Roman, which they would have been. A charity is for community work/support, not for being front to someone that's part of a major war. Getting worse and worse for Chelsea
Hi Boys
I am here for the Final
Pool are our main rivals , but I'm going for them for the same reason. Roman really should resign
Good Morning, Dave.
Nice crowd stuff about Ukraine but then there was some cheering during the GSTQ....what was up with that
Wonder how Roman feels about having to watch the support for Ukraine,.
I was wondering the same. Not sure why there was anything but singing during the anthem
I'm in the Liverpool corner today, hoping that they can strike a blow against the Russian oligarchy. Come on, you Reds!
Morning, Dave - how are you, mate?
Wonder how Bob feels about an American possibly becoming Leeds manager even though he seems to have decent credentials
So wish it wasn't Liverpool that need to beat Chelsea today
Thiago hurt during warm-up and now crying like a teenage girl now
Despite Chelsea being owned by a Russian The players and coaching staff of Chelsea caught ion the middle for something that they cannot be blamed for. Still rooting for the Reds
They're off from Wembley
I appreciate the sympathetic texts last night about Marcelo Bielsa; it meant a lot. I know that a lot of my fellow Leeds friends who having been getting a lot of stick from their friends who support other clubs.
Off we go
Always good to have teams playing in their traditional colors for a Final
And we're away from Wemberley - let's have a good one, boys!
Don't like how foreign managers treat this competition especially Klopp
Front three not played yet in the competition. Put your reserve keeper in for a Final
No Cup Final Suit
I was thinking the same , Dave. Don't like being in a position where I'm rooting for our archenemy
Correct, Dave. Teutons in Tracksuits today. That would be a great SNL skit
I just hope Leeds can sort themselves out
Bringing in an American...is that the right thing? I don't like how the American with German ties has done with my lot
Also, Liverpool are going for a quadruple....can't be having that either!!
Tommy Tuchel was Klopp's assistant at Dortmund before succeeding him. They didn't exactly look friendly toward each other
Part of me wants to knock Liverpool down a peg or two but why does it have to be Chelsea!
NOT FAIR
Chelsea playing in a domestic final for six straight years...yikes
I think Jesse march's tactics are similar to Ralf's , so expect a min or variation of Ralf ball at ER. Not sure Bob will like that
Pulisic with a huge chance...saved
He was on
He has to finish that
Nice point blank save by Kellleher from Pulisic off a pass from Azpi after a run and pass from, Kai the Guy
Was that save the Luck of the Irish? No a great reflex save
Good start from Chelsea.
I'm sure you two would watch Teutons in Tracksuits if that was an SNL skit. It reminds of a teutonic skit in the mid 80s With Dieter and his Sprockets
I certainly do remember that Mike Meyers sketch on SNL. Great stuff!
Liverpool haven't gotten off the coach yet. Maybe they're still rattled by that late injury for Thiago?
Teutons in Tracksuits with Dave as Jurgen Klopp and Bob as Tommy Tuchel!
They're United in disguise
Hendo is the natural replacement for Thiago. I just think that Pool for some reason as a team have failed to get out of fist geer.
Did you know that Mike Meyers' brother is a big name in the music business.
Listened to a very interesting interview he had with Phil Thornalley recently
Chelsea's Thiago down and not a Silva lining for him as he's down holding his arm. Seems to be able to continue
His name is Paul Myers
WOW ! Great info wasn't aware of Mike Meyers's bruv.
Pulisic should have buried that chance. What a miss!
I didn't know that, either, mate. Very interesting family.
The interview was very interesting about his career
Mentions his Cure days, Torn, JHJ, RAK Studios and also mentioned Mike as his best friend growing up
WOW ! That's a fantastic story. Great info.
First chance for Pool and Mane mistimed his jump as he headed well wide off a cross from TAA
It wasn't exactly on the Mane
Oh - Mane was in there but got the header all wrong.
Part of the interview text
Even mentions Tony!
https://tapeop.com/interviews/135/phil-thornalley/
And my dad
Justa reminder that the LC winners now qualify for the Conference League if they finish below fifth place. That almost certainly won't apply this year with both teams all but certain to be in the CL next season
Mane stupidly mounted down just outside the Chelsea box
Free kick taken short and well wide by Salah. Doesn't deserve a Salahry increase with that shot
WOW ! That's a must watch. Sounds really fascinating
Luis Diaz wins a corner off of Trevor Chalobah off a run and pass from Andy Robertson
Can you post the link to that interview, mate?
Ketia called for a foul on Mount on a Chelsea counter. Not sure why Chelsea players are surrounding the ref. Now I see why . He swung an elbow
It is only text of the interview
There is a podcast with it
Teutons in Tracksuits needs to be changed to tracksuit. Klopp wearing a coat
Pool wins another corner. Chelsea manage to clear it away
Thiago Silva clears for yet another Pool corner
Liverpool want a pen...nothing going
Still stunned about yesterday's decision....there is no way that wasn't a handball. I really think the Prem want a 2 horse race with them all even...head to head decider
This Luis Diaz guy is looking like an excellent pick-up for Liverpool with Diogo Jota out right now.
OH! Nice save by Mendy from Keita then Great second save on the rebound by Mendy from Mane for a Pool corner
How did that not go one!!
Great second save
Wow - great save by Mendy there when it seemed like Mane was sure to score.
That was a really ridiculous decision at Goodison Park. The offside excuse was really pathetic
Agreed about Luis Diaz. He was also wanted by Hammers and Spuds. Don't blame him for choosing Pool over those two. Not sure if United attempted to sign him.
What was that decision, Dave? I missed most of the late match.
Found it
Here is the podcast
They talk about Phil for a while. Phil starts at the 1:14:15
https://myerspodcasting.libsyn.com/phil-thornalley-astral-drive-kasim-sulton-utopia-annie-zaleski-on-duran-duran-and-10000-hz-records-opelika-al
WOW ! Motherwell did well to come from two down at the half as it finished Desmond at Ibrox.
Just looked at the picture of a handball on City...blantant...not given
Another chance... Chelsea blow it this time
Probably offside
Wow - terrible miss by Havertz! The offside flag spares his blushes.
Kai the Guy shoots wide with just Kelleher to beat, but bailed out by the offside flag
I meant for you to look at picture
Thanks, Dave!
Agreed with Dave. Toffees denied a stonewall hand ball penalty with the excuse that offside occurred prior to the handball but Never saw the offside. A rigged decision
Hendo should have shot...passed it off
It wasn't offside! An offside they called was AFTER the handball
Stunning!
I HATE VAR
I could accept it if the ref missed it and that was that
Roman seems fixated with hiring moody managers. Jose twice, Conte, and now Tommy the Teuton.
Powerful shot from Pulisic right at Kelleher and beaten away
Another big chance for Pulisic!
Sounds like the two Dave's agree about yesterday's joke of a decision and joke is too kind a word
Shot from Azpi from 25 yards out not too far off
Just a reminder that Salad and Mendy were opponents in the ANC Final a month ago. That final finished 0-0 and Mendy's Senegal won in the shootout. Hope Salah wins today
Mount... how did that not go in!
By the way, there are eight points at stake in this match today in the PPP.
Gooner, Someone Said, and Yellows have Chelsea to win
MUR, Teddy and UWS have Chelsea to lose
MOT, Red Dragon, and Swansong have Liverpool to win
Yours truly has Chelsea to win and Liverpool to lose!
OH! How did Mason Mount miss that? Wide open and shot wide with just Kelleher to beat. Nice run from Pulisic then passed to Kai the Guy two Mason Mount for that missed sitter. A minute of stoppage time
Nostrabobus
No goals at half time but a decent match
Half-time - I can't believe that this one is still scoreless. Good first half.
Yet another reason for the Dave;'sn to want a Pool win as if the need ed another one. A big points accumulation for Bob if Chelsea wins
It's 0-0 at the half where both sides had great chances to score.,
We'll see - I could easily end up with null points - I am bottom of the league right now!
The second half is underway from Wembley.
I'm not far off you Bob!
Tommy Teuton's temper on display after that misplaced pass.
I'm surprised to be in the hunt for first place. A Pool win helps my cause even though I would still be behind Swansong
Kai the Guy goes past Matip but his pass is just too far in front of Pulisic for what would have been an easy tap in
Mount...hits the inside of the post!!
SO WIDE OPEN
Why is no one lambasting Liverpool's defenders... especially VanDyke...they have been ripped apart!
How did Mount miss that ? What a missed sitter as he hit the inside pop the post with just Kelleher to beat
Liverpool haven't won the League Cup for quite a while
They also took a while to win it back in the late 70s and early 70s....they won four on the trot...81, 82, 83 and 84
They beat West Ham in 81 after a replay, Spurs in 82 AET, United in 83 AET and Everton in 84
Interesting... Spurs, United and Everton all went on to win the FA Cup that season after losing in the League Cup Final
Van Dyke more like 96 year old Dick with his defending on that shot that hit the post
But he's the "best defender of all time"
Great stat, Dave. I remember Pool defeating Cardiff in a penalty shootout in the Final shortly after Klopp took over. Maybe in his second season with Pool. Was that their last LC Final win?
Liverpool looking to win it for the 9th time beating the tie with City
Chelsea hoping to break the tie with United and Vila to go into third wiht 6 wins
I'm enjoying lunch with Kate right now - back in a tick. Come on, you Reds!
True . He's miles better than the likes of Kroll , Beckenbauer, Moore and Jackie Charlton
Luis Diaz with a shot blocked for a Pool corner
atrocious corner from Andy Robertson didn't clear the ground and was cleared by the first man
I don't think it was from Klopp was in charge for that one
They said he had only won the League and CL with Pool
I think Dalglish was in charge
Reece James getting stripped. Not ready to come on as he's the natural replacement if Azpi can't continue
Then that win was almost ten years ago. It has been while for Pool
Now that change occurs . Reese James on for Azpi
I wonder if Chelsea has those missed sitters because part of the sanctions are that they are not permitted to score while Roman owns the club
Wonder what Bob is eating for lunch. Sound like a good day for soup
Trevor Chalobah down for Pool and Keita for Pool. VAR checking to see if there is serious foul play. I think both players went for the ball. Stu Atwell headed to the screen . Does that mean Ketia could be sent off?
Thankfully common sense prevails and nothing doing
No red for VAR... of course...if it was a lesser team playing and it was against Liverpool....he'd have been off
I truthfully mean that
Marcos Alonso wins a Chelsea corner
OH! Now Salah guilty of missing a wide open goal. Chelsea corner played back to Mendy who makes a really poor clearance and Kieta played through Salah and his shot went past Mendy by cleared before it even reached the goal line
Salah's turn to miss a one on one...the finishing today has been poor!!
Put me in coach...I'm ready to play... today.... put me in coach...I'm ready to play....today....look at me...I can be....centerforward
Dave , I think you would have had a double hat-trick by now with all those guilt edged chances
Marcos Alonso called for a push on Salah just outside the Chelsea box
Free kick chance for the Reds.......chips it in... and it's in!!
GOAL !MATIP HEADS POOL IN TO THE LEAD. IT WAS ONLY AN INCH OUT.
Free kick from TAA headed by Mane to Matip to head in from about a foot out
Finally! After so many near misses, it's Joel Matip who bundles it in. Couldn't miss!
1-0 Liverpool!
Matip did his best to miss it...hit the roof of the net
Chelsea with their sanctions will find it tough to come back
Now then - VAR check on the goal.
Stuart Atwell is going to the screen. Doesn't look good for Liverpool.
VAR checking
VanDyke did the same thing as Maguire did for the disallowed goal vs Burnley
No goal
I still hate VAR
It's been chalked off - I don't believe it!
VAR checking for a foul on Van Dyke. I didn't think there was enough in it where the goal would have been prevented. Stu Atwell headed to the screen so this one will probably be disallowed. It's disallowed and still 0-0
At least it is consistent with the Mag's decision
Disagree with both.... VAR is so nitpickiy
I agree. A horrible decision. Van Dylke did practically nothing and definitely not enough to have prevented Chelsea from properly defending for that goal
Mendy down for Chelsea after that last ditch clearance from Thiago Silva .
Play continues and Mendy punches away the corner from TAA
I disagreed with the Mag's one too... did I mention I hate VAR
Maguire took away Varane's first Man U goal and caused us to drop two points at Turf Moor
I'm guessing both teams are allowed five substitutions with it being half a dozen if there's ET
Mount and Pulisic are off for Lukaku and Werner
Double substitution by Tommy Teuton. The Chunk mounted on wand werner for Pulsic. That's an extra striker on the pitch
Liverpool have taken control of this one all of a sudden
Now Luis liz guilty of a missed chance. Put through and shoots right against Mendy for a corner
Diaz with a chance.... Mendy saves again
I don't know if I have seen more one on one's in a game before!!
ALL OF THEM MISSED
No where near James' hand...almost in the meat and two veg
Ridiculous interpretation of interfering and not. Matty Upson said VanDyke's offside not interfering with play but the love tap was. Either both we're interfering or none was. You can't have it both ways
Now Havertz puts it in the net and it's flagged offside. Not sure we're going to see any goals today.
Now Chelsea get the ball in the net... flag is up
Not all three were offside
GOAL ! No it's not Kai the Guy thought he head headed Chelsea into the lead but Werner offside when he received the pass to make the cross
When they say sanctions against the Reds they mean the Russians not Pool. Is that what you would tell your students ,. Bob?
James Milner for Keita , Jota for Mane , and Harvey Eliott who is only part of the squad due to Thiago's injury to come on too
Kelleher more like Beckenbauer with that sweeper keeping than Van Dyke
Whoever wins the Cup will take it back to a city different that Manchester for the first time since 2015
City's 5 wins and United's 1 win since then
Of course it was Chelsea that won it then
It was Swansea before that and then Liverpool
Klopp has been a naughty boy.... ref gives him a talking to...next time...detention
Milner.....Leeds Academy Shot....it just landed
LOL, Dave! I bet you would love to be in charge of that detention where Klopp would be. Don't let him use his cellphone.
Interesting LC recent history.other than Swans in the same three cities in the past ten years and that year it went to Wales. The only time it went to Wales I think
That's what I would tell them, mate.
Crazy stuff!!
Can't believe this is still scoreless
Great save by Mendy from Luis diaz then another shot well blocked .Somehow still 0-0
LOL, Bob! Thought you would say that.
Do you think that Klopp was telling Andy Madley that the wrong Reds were sanctioned and that must have been why he summoned over Stu Atwell.
An American would see this score and say....boring!
Did you see the MLS match in Prime Time on Fox... looked exciting at the end when I watched it
Ended Desmond between the Timbers and Revs
Great overhead kick for the equalizer
for once I agree with Peter Dreary and a dreary stat as he mentions Klopp's poor record at Wembley
Diaz would be more effective on the right side. It drives me crazy that they have a left footer (Mo Salah) on the right wing and a right footer on the left wing. Time after time, they have to cut inside.
Missed that match because I was at the Three Dog Night concert. Sounds like it was a great match
I didn't have the time to watch it. Years ago, I followed the Revs when I lived in Boston but I just don't have the time to keep up with more than English footer.
Kovacic booked for a foul on Luis diaz
Crazy night in College Basketball yesterday
#1 Gonzaga LOST
#2 Arizona LOST
#3 Auburn LOST
#4 Purdue LOST
#5 Kansa LOST
#6 Kentucky LOST
#7 Duke....WON
Half a dozen stoppage time minutes
I can't believe that this one could be settled by penalties in half an hour instead of the perfectly good Joel Matip goal.
Van Dyke header....great save!!
This could have been 4-4
Oh - VDV nearly sealed it there. Great save by Mendy.
OH! Great save by Mendy from a Van Dyke header off the corner form TAA
