England v. Ivory Coast Live!
Afternoon, chaps - it's footer time again! The focus for me, of course, is England's friendly against the Ivory Coast at Wembley this evening. It's Gareth's last chance for the summer to take a look at a few players who might be on the margins of the squad for Qatar 2022. It's also another chance for Harry Kane, now on 49 goals to get close to Wayne Rooney's tally of 55 goals for England.
Join me if you're loafing about this afternoon, won't you?

It's a historic evening tonight, as England and Ivory Coast have never played each other before. Should be intriguing.
The teams lining up in the tunnel now:
England: Pope, White, Mings, Maguire, Mitchell, Bellingham, Rice, Ward-Prowse, Sterling, Watkins, Grealish. Subs: Shaw, Forster, Henderson, Guehi, Coady, Walker-Peters, Foden, Mount, Kane, Gallagher, Pickford, Smith Rowe.
Ivory Coast: Badra Ali Sangare, Kamara, Deli, Bailly, Aurier, Seri, Kessie, Gradel, Cornet, Pepe, Haller. Subs: Cisse, Diallo, Konan, Agbadou, Boly, Kouassi, Coulibaly, Kone, Ibrahim Sangare, Akouokou, Konate, Boli.
Referee: Erik Lambrechts (Belgium).
Giid Afternoon, Bob. Back from a walking trail along the lake with Trooper on a lovely day
How have you been this week?
WOW! Norway goes EIGHT up vs Armenia in a friendly
It looks to me like a back four with perhaps Ben White deputizing in the right back role he ended up in the other night. Two holding middies in Rice and Bellingham, Grealish adding the flair up front with Watkins in the center forward role. I suspect that Kane will feature at some point.
Afternoon, David - thanks for joining me. How's your day going?
Good week for me, so far. I've got my car in the shop for some routine maintenance right now, so I may need to run at half time to pick it up. We'll see.
In WC qualifying the Aussies will face the UAE in a playoff in June. The winner plays the fifth placed team in South America. I'm favoring the South American team
Going well, thank you for asking. Wishing you well with the car
Some debuts and fringe players given chance as expected these two friendlies
There are also two World Cup qualifiers that have already kicked off:
Poland v. Sweden
Portugal v. North Macedonia
So, two more WC slots up for grabs today.
Some familiar friends in the Ivorian side. Surprisingly , our mate, Zaha , the Palace winger not involved
They're off from Wembley
And we're away at Wembley. Come on, you Three Lions!
Five second leg African WC qualifying matches taking place. The five winners will be at the WC
Olly Watkins down as he was stamped on the foot. That was a clumsy challenge at best
Yes, it's always fun to catch up with my old LUFC chum Maxi Gradel. It seems ages since he was bombing around for us in L1.
Cote D'ivoire failed to qualify for the final round of qualifying and won't be at the WC for the second time in a row
Ah - I thought that they'd already qualified.
I think Gradel had a brief spell in the Prem with the Cherries as well. He's been around a few clubs
So, who are the African qualifiers so far - do you know?
Sengal one up vs Egypt and 1-1 on agg. That's about to head to ET. Strange that one of those two won't be in the WC
Nearly through to Watkins - I'd like to see him notch one tonight. Gareth seems to like him as a a striking option.
It is - you'd think both would be strong contenders.
England players doing a nice job at the high press so far. The Elephants are having a hard time building anything.
So far nobody has qualified from Africa.
Senegal vs Egypt 1-1 one egg in second half stoppage time.
Nigeria vs Ghana 1-1 on agg in the 87th minute. Either Ghana ahead on away goals or headed to ET if away goal eliminated
Algeria vs Cameroon, Morocco vs Congo , and Tunisia vs Mali second legs kick off at 3:30
Sterling is down for some treatment right now.
Algeria won 0-1 in Cameroon in the first leg. Morocco drew 1-1 in DR Congo in the first leg, and Tunisia won 0-1 in Mali in the first leg
Wow - thanks for that update, mate.
So, that must mean that there are seven WC slots up for grabs today.
Norway defeated Armenia 9-0 in a friendly with a hat-trick from Josh King and a brace from Haaland . All nine goals scored against the men. Doesn't sound very friendly
Razza earns a free kick out wide left. Swung in by SWP and Mings nearly got to it.
Seven WC spots up for grabs plus the South American playoff spot up for grabs today. UAE qualified to face the Aussies in the Asian playoff earlier today
Some fairly rugged play from Ivory Coast so far.
Senegal vs Egypt currently in ET. That's a rematch of the ANC final from a month ago if I'm not mistaken . African qualifying is becoming increasingly tougher
Turkey one up from a goal from Under, not over.
Who's competing in the South American playoff?
Oh - Bellingham goes close there but for a good save by the keeper Sangare.
OH! Off the post from Bellin glam. HEY JUDE HOW DID YOU MISS THAT SITTER. Took a nick off the keeper. Then the return pass just in front of Watkins
Tonight is the last match day of South American qualifying . Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador , and Uruguay have already qualified . Peru, Colombia, or Chile will finish in the playoff spot.
Nigeria vs Ghana finished 1-1 and the night and on agg. Ghana win on away goals rule , so Nigeria fail to qualify. Partey time as he scored the Ghana goal. That's a shocker ! Right, mate?
I don't think that Ivory Coast have gotten within forty yards of the England goal so far.
Nice Beatles reference, mate!
Oh - Grealish jinks inside but Sangare smothers his shot.
That is a shocker - Nigeria are mainstays in the finals.
Senegal vs Egypt 1-1 on agg in the tenth minute of ET. Both goals OGs. Senegal cored in the third minute of this match.
Cheers, Bob. Thought that would be music to your ears
I think we're seeing why Cote D'Ivoire failed to make the final rounds of African WC qualifying
The car shop just called and I've got a reprieve for today. They're keeping it overnight because they needed to get a part. So, I can stick around and enjoy this one with you.
Jocks take the lead in Austria in a friendly. Austrians not doing well against Celtic opposition
We are indeed, mate. I'm not impressed. But didn't they do over France the other day?
Razza is claiming a handball there as he crosses but nothing doing.
Glad you can stay even though a shame that the car isn't ready
Oh - nice stuff from Sterling there after a lovely ball through from Ben White. England playing really well.
France came from behind to defeat the Ivorians 2-1. Pepe for Cote D'voire. Olly ties it up then the winner in the third minute of second half stoppage time. Former Gunners Hair Bear, Gwen the Doozy with the assist
Not to worry - I'm not really going anywhere these days while I'm on sabbatical. It's a fairly quiet time.
Hi Boys
Just popped in for a few minutes!
Portugal take the lead made in Old Trafford
Ronaldo sets up Bruno
I have that on the telly and England on the computer
Olly didn't score the late winner. A player I never heard of did, but either current or former Gunners had a hand in all three goals
ENGLAND SCORE!!!
Watkins gives the good guys the lead!!
Goals flying in
GOAL 1 OLLY WATKINS GIVES ENGLAND THE LEAD
GOAL! Sterling dazzles out wide left and lays it on a plate for Ollie Watkins!
1-0!
Good Afternoon, Dave. perfect timing
Easy tap in from a Sterling cross
Sterling won the ball off a poor pass from Citeh teammate, Jack Grealish, off of Eric Bailey, then got past Aurier, then past to Watkins for an easy tap in
Sounds like the Portuguese are feasting on North Mac N Cheese.
Nothing more than England deserved from the early pressure.
Welcome, Dave - you brought England some good luck. How's the tutoring going?
Wales vs Czechs 1-1. Hammers Soucek for the Czechs then Cardiff's Ruben Colwill ties it up for Wales
Seri A , of the Cottagers , booked for a less than Sterling challenge.
Oh - SWP put it right on Declan Rice's noggin but the header was right at Sangare.
I was a our old neighbor's for the USA match.... quite an emphatic win!!
I was wondering about if that late goal hurt at all and it didn't!!
They would have been 11 goals up so they couldn't lose by 6
Now they are 10 goals up but since scoring more goals...still is 6
Long range header by Declan Rice straight to the keeper off the free kick from JWP
thanks guys for the welcome
I have been SOOO busy! Over 100 hours in March. Just had 4 more students added today!
You guys and Kate should do it!
Correct, Dave. As long as the U.S. doesn't loss by six or more we're in. Now I think we're basically in. Felling more secure as we padded the goal difference. As you say, goals count
Alright TT.... we get it... huge gift by NM.....it is modern day football...phaff around at the back and lose it
Yeah - the US really needed that kind of win against Panama. No messing about. It means that the pressure is off for tomorrow night. The Ticos would have to win by a boatload.
I tutored in the past when I taught, but not that many hours. That should be a decent payday
I always thought it was such an important point against Mexico...no one on the panel thought it was important. It is the point that made all the difference! Don't need a thing in CR except not getting thumped
Mexico not definitely through. IF CR win by three and Mexico lose by 2 at home to El Salvador then Mexico in the playoffs. Would be Surprised if that happened
It will be a good pay day. You get paid in the 20s of the month for the previous month's work
Decent effort from Bellingham
I think 0-0 vs Mexico was a good result for both teams. CR will not be pleased, but that's their problem
Ha ha - Serge Aurier is off! Ivory Coast down to ten men! Gooner will love that.
STRUTH...A red card!! What's the point!!!
Grealish didn't want the card shown
Aurier scent off for a second booking . Both teams want him on . Ref having none of it. As Peter Dreary said it doesn't help either team
Why ruin a Friendly...pointless
Agreed, Dave. some of these refs don't get the point.
Norway vs Armenia was ruined when an Armenian player was sent off in the 17th minute and Norway ended up winning 9-0-. Perfect example of a red card ruining a match
Either of you have any sympathy for Italy?
Not me....KARMA for Penalties
Now then - let's hope that England can put the hammer down and score loads.
TT mentions the MISTAKE by NM
Nigeria eliminated from WC qualifying as they lost on thew away goals rule to Ghana
Dreary did just point out... England might have to play against 10.... attack...with no worries
HT in Portugal
Senegal vs Egypt a couple of minutes away from spot kicks . Last month for there ANC. This month for a WC spot
Less than 5 to go in ET between the two Liverpool front men
Jocks one up at the la fi nAustria. Jack Henry of Brugge, with the goal
TWO NIL
Sterling with a nice shot saved... great pass back to him by Grealish off the rebound
GOAL! Sterling at the second opportunity!
Very smart pass by Jack
GOAL ! STERLING POUTS ENGLAND TWO UP. HIS FIRST SHOT PUSHED BY THE KEEPER TO JACK GRELAISH, WHO PASSE BACK TO STERLING FOR A TAP IN
Lovely move started by Maguire who found Watkins. Nice pass off to Sterling who strode forward and hit one that Sangare could only parry away to Grealish who found Sterling in the middle.
2-0!
VAR checking for presumably a possible offside.
The goal stands. What does Gareth say in the press conference. We thrashed ten men?
Three Lions two goals and a man up at the half
England are cruising it at half-time against a side who beat the World Cup champions just the other day.
Harry Kane will be wanting to have at least half an hour against this lot now that the starters have softened them up.
Penalties in Senegal
I think they lost to France 2-1
Where will the WC draw be found? What time?
Senegal vs Egypt will be decided by penalty shootout for a WC spot
Yes. France came from behind to score with a late stoppage time winner
I'm guessing the draw will be in Qatar, but not sure when
Just found it . WC draw at noon our time this Friday in Qatar. That's not an April Fools joke,.
My mistake - I thought they'd won that one.
In the penalty shootout both teams missed their first two spot kicks. Salah on of the guilty ones
Sorry. Sengal one up. They scored their first spot kick then missed the next two. Lead 1-0 in the shootout
I'll look forward to that draw on Friday. I've got a nice outing planned for that afternoon - I'm meeting up with a retired teacher in Salamanca (about an hour away) for lunch. He's just written an interesting novel that I'm reviewing for a magazine.
England coming back out. Looks like some subs are on the way, as Ben White is pictured having a laugh in the stands.
Three changes for Ivory Coast now.
Kyle Walker-Peters on for Ben White. Cote D'ivoire with a triple change. Wily Boly on for Pepe. Didn't see the other changes, but sounds like damage limitation
Walker-Peters on for Ben White then. Surely more to come.
Second half underway
I am about to go.... and England get a penalty inside the first minute of the half
Well, that didn't take long. Penalty to England after Bellingham is upended.
PENALTY ENGLAND . BELLINGHAM TRIPPED IN THE BOX. VAR TO CHECK. KOULIBALI LATE ON BELLINGHAM
I think the decision will stand
Enjoy your evening, Dave!
Ref going to the monitor to check. This is ridiculous
The ref is having a look now. Not good.
VAR checking...usually the decision gets changed.....changed
No pen
That is it for me boys...gotta go back to work!
The ref has changed his mind then.
He overturns the decision. A make up call.?
I second that. Have a great evening, Dave
Bob , sounds like a great afternoon. Hopefully you will be around for the draw. Not sure how they can make the draw Friday with three WC spots up for grabs
Poland takes the lead vs Sweden in the WC playoff match
Lew, who else, with a spot kick
Senegal has defeated 3-1 on spot kicks to qualify for the WC. I'm fine with that result
Oh - nice move by Bellingham and then a cross driven over that Watkins should have been able to knock in.
Chupo-Moting gives Cameroon the lead Algeria. Now 1-1 on agg in that match
I saw that. Mane defeats Salah in that one. Apparently Mendy was the hero of the day.
Morocco takes the lead vs DR Congo and lead 2-1 on agg
Senegal defeated Egypt in the ANC Final on spot kicks in an almost identical way to the description you gave, Bob.
Not a picture percy challenge by Kamara on Bellingham , who was none too pleased. He said HEY JUDE, I'm sorry.
Now on Jack Grealish . Not exactly photo ops for Kamara.
The Ivorians could end up with nine players if they keep this up.
John McGinn puts the Jocks two up in Austria
Agreed, Bob. Ivorians need to be more careful or else we could have a cricket score instead of a footie score
Magyars take the lead in Belfast. Spain goes four up vs Iceland
France two up vs South Africa at the half. Olly and Mbappe with the goals
Bellingham is really turning on the style in this second half.
Gareth about to make a quadruple change. We'll need the scorecards to keep track
Four changes to come - Kane, Shaw, Foden and Smith-Rowe coming on to join the party.
Watkins, Mitchell, Grealish and SWP coming off.
Tyreek Mitchell Shaw is being subbed on his England debut. That;sd like for like., Jack Grealish replaced by Emil Smith , who is Rowed on, Phil Foden, Harry Kane and Abel to come on for Olly Watkins , and Phil Foden on for Citeh teammate, Sterling
Konan , the Barbarian singing as he come on for Burnley's coronet.
Steve Berg-Wine ties it up for the Dutch vs Germans
Portugal goes two up vs North Mac N Cheese. Made in the NW of England . Bruno with a brace, this time assisted by Jota.
As things stand Portugal and Poland about to eliminate North Mac N Cheese, and Sweden
Italy trailed early but now lead 1-3 in Turkey . Rapsadori with a double. Is it Raspa time?
Just over by JWP , skimming the top of the net
Spain five up vs Iceland
Austria pulls it back to 1-2 vs the Jocks. Belgium goes three up vs Burkina Faso
Poland goes two up vs Sweden
I fully expected Portugal and Poland to emerge from those ties.
Agreed. Those two going as expected.
Morocco goes two up vs DR Congo in the seventh minute of first half stoppage time and now leads 3-1 on agg
Oh - Deli with a huge miss. That was their chance to get back into this one. England have been snoozing for the past fifteen minutes.
Connor Gallagher on for JWP
Conor Gallagher coming on after his impressive debut against Switzerland the other night.
This match has fizzled out. The sending off ruined this match
Turkey pulls it back to 2-3 vs Italy
Walker-Peters fell in the box but the ref's not buying it.
Austria has come from two down vs the Jocks., Now Desmond in that friendly
Next up for England are the Nations League matches in June against Hungary, Germany and Italy.
The game has become something of a snoozefest in the last few minutes, with Ivory Coast having decided that possession is the best form of defence, and England having lost intensity with all their substitutions.
Seb Haller, the former Hammer reel;aced by Johann Boli, who plays his footie in Qatar, of all places
Basically those are glorified friendlies in June since the WC won't take place in the Summer
I forgot that Haller was on the pitch - and now he's off.
Agreed, Bob. The ref would do well not to add any stoppage time
Even trooper is snoring. He must know , but then he had a long walkies.
Oh - Kane was in there and should have scored but his touch let him down.
Long ball from Harry Maguire miss controlled by Harry Kane
Has Trooper adjusted well to his new surroundings?
Portugal has defeated North Mac N Cheese 2-0 with a double from Bruno and qualify for the WC
Yes. Trooper is doing really well with us. You will enjoy meeting him
Email Smith Rowes a shot well wide off a pass from Kyle Walker-Peters
Ivorians with a late sub too ruin Dave's day.
GOAL! Tyrone Mings rounds off the win with a powerful header.
3-0!
GOAL MINGS IS THE MERCILESS ONE AS HE SCORES OFF A CORNER TO PUT THE THREE LIUONS THREE UP. NICE HEADER OFF THE CORNER FROM PHIL FODEN
It's over as the Three lions defeat ten man Ivorian 3-0
Poland has defeated Sweden 2-0 to qualify for the WC
Three African WC qualifiers still going on
Nice sharing this with you this afternoon. I'll look forward to chatting with you during the US match tomororw night.
Cheerio!
Early in the second half here is the latest update on the remaining African qualifiers.
Algeria vs Cameroon 1-1 on agg
Morocco lead DR Congo 3-1 on agg
Tunisia lead Mali 1-0 on agg
Cheers, Bob. Great chatting with you. Enjoy the remainder of your afternoon
