Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

And an Odd Sunday

Our odd Sunday with a bit of this and a bit of that continues this morning with three FA Cup matches and two Premier League matches scattered across the various platforms. As I type, the early kick in the Cup has Palace 2-0 up over hapless Everton. I'm on USA waiting for the early Premier League match between Leicester and Brentford.

That's followed by Soton v. Citeh in the Cup on ESPN+ at 11am. The later match in the Prem is a London Derby between Spurs and West Ham with a European slot on the line. Then we wrap up the day on the Plus with a late Cup match between Forest and Liverpool.

Join me for all the fun today, won't you?

Morning, boys - Leicester and Brentford come into this one relatively safe and in mid-table, with of course Brentford in 15th slightly less safe on 30 points.

Morning Bob
I've been watching the Cup on my Roku but just changed over to the computer so I can watch the league match on the telly

Surely you are a Fox today! Leeds are only a point behind them

Morning, Dave - great to have you on board. I'm actually assuming that Brentford are safe. My concentration is on the bottom four. If they keep losing and we get another couple of wins, we'll be safe.

See you in a tick, mate - go get that java going.

Good Morning, Bob and Dave. Like Dave I'm watching the Prem on TV and the Cup on the computer

I watched the first half of the Cup match and then went for walkies with the new dog.

10:06 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The new dog is not a collie. He's half Mastiff and half black lab. Very friendly and similar personality to Sparky. He's a perfect fit for us

10:07 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

BLOODY HELL! Haha took too bloody long to shoot . Took ages to tee up a close range sghot then tackled. Should have put Palace three up

10:09 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Coming down to the last ten minutes, Palace are still leading Everton 2-0 through goals from Guehi and Mateta.

Make that 3-0! Zaha with the third.

Morning, David - how's your weekend been so far?

10:12 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

GOAL ! ZAHA PUTS PALACE THREE UP . ZAHA DESERVES A LOT OF CREDIT AS HE WON THE BALL, LOST IT , WION IT BACK , OPLAYED A ONE TWO WITH MITCHELL THEN WENT ON A RUN. PASSED TO MIKE OLISE AND I THOUGHT HIS CURLING SHOT WENT WIDE SDDUE TO THE CAMERA ANGLE , BUT CAME OFF THE POST AND THE BALL WATCHING TOFFEES LET HIM SCORE INTO A WIDE OPEN GOAL

10:13 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Good Morning, Bob. It's been a great weekend. Instead of getting the Border Collie mix we got a half Mastiff/half blacvk lab mix. He's a perfect fit and similar temperament to Sparky

Blogger manunitedrules said...

How has your weekend been?

10:14 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Beneteke on for Mike Olise presumably for his physical presence and Will Hughes for the Cpypte which is an attacking switch being three up. Well done, Paddy

Blogger United We Stand said...

I am back as Palace go three up

Que Sera Sera being sung with pride at the Selhurst Park!

Wonder how many times Palace have made the semis

I know they lost to Southampton in 76
They also won in 90 and 16 only to lose to Man U in the Final

Had they won in 76...they would have lost to Man U again!

Palace doing well in the Cup without United in the picture!!

10:17 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Bob, this Prem match doesn't matter to any of us. The Bees aren nine points clear and to be honest are close to being safe

10:17 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Good Morning, Dave. You will be interested to note that Palace and the Toffees are scheduler's;ed to play in the Premier the weekend of the semis , so that match has to be rescheduled

Leeds definitely don't want Brentford to get anything... Leeds only a point behind!

I just drink the homemade stuff

10:22 AM

That'll do nicely - I hope that a right thumping will depress Everton even more. I don't want any more stoppage time heroics from them in the future.

10:22 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Palace heading to Wembley

10:23 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

My opinion is that this match doesn't matter that much to Leeds as the Bees are eight points clear. Better for Leeds if the Foxes win, but not that important compared to teams below Leeds

10:23 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

It's over and Palace thrash the Toffees 4-0

10:24 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I'd love to see the Saints and especially Forest to win later

10:24 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I still think the bottom three at the end of the season will be thew Hornets , Canaries, and Burnley. A chance that the Toffees could be third from bottom instead of Burnley, but I'm guessing the three mentioned at the beginning of this comment

10:25 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I know they are 8 points clear of the drop but ONE point clear of Leeds....always good to have more teams below you. Leeds could overtake them next time out

10:25 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed, Dave. I'm rooting for those two

10:26 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

The weekend's been good. We did our usual Friday night date night with homemade pizza and a movie and some drinkies.

I spent most of yesterday afternoon setting up my conference travel.

10:26 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I'm well aware that the Bees are one point clear of Leeds, but Leeds priority is surviving then next is whether they finish above the Bees. That's my two cents worth

10:27 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Where are you traveling?

10:28 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Just to mention we didn't get the Collie. He's a Mastiff/ Black Lab mix. He has a sim liar personality to Sparky, which is what we were looking for. He was named Trump, but we changed it to Trooper.. He has already responded to the new name

10:28 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Nice to see Brentford behind, but I'm not emotionally invested in them.

Having looked at the run-ins for the bottom four, I'm picking Norwich, Watford and Everton for the drop. I think Burnley have enough winnable points to get clear but it'll be a tight one.

10:29 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Glad you're happy

10:29 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Bob, I remember you mentioning yesterday that you were traveling to San Diego. Is that the conference you're mentioning

10:29 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

I've got a big education conference in San Diego at the end of April. I'll be doing a presentation with a couple of friends from Purdue.

10:30 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Bob, that's basically what I stated. More important ot be clear too those four than to worry about being a point behind the Bees.

10:30 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

So, do Doug and Kathy like the fancy Starbucks drinks?

10:31 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

No reason Brentford aren't wearing their red, white and black

There should be a rule!!!

Maddison picks up a cheap free kick. He might fancy it.

10:33 AM

I understand what both of you are saying... but better having another team more likely for the drop than Leeds...so....just have Brentford lose and let them sweat stout

They get an Americano....they are hooked.....plonkers

Are you going to be traveling together ?

I've just checked out Trooper on Elizabeth's FB feed. He's a bit doggy, in't he? Wouldn't like to meet him up a dark alley. You should have named him Norman "Bites Yer Legs" Hunter!

Apparently Eriksen has Covid and not in today's squad and not joining up with Denmark either

10:44 AM

10:44 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Sorry, Dave. I see the comment at 10:37. Will send pics. For those of you that met Sparky, he will remind you a lot of him if you meet Trooper, just much larger

10:45 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

Sparky was a lovely dog - have fun with Trooper, mate.

10:46 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

LOL, BOB! He's only eleven months old, but sleeps more than us. No chance of that happening

10:46 AM

I am glad the dog seems to have adjusted to the name

Male or female?

10:46 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Foxes two up at the half

10:47 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I don't think we will get another dog after Shadow. I know how upsetting it will be! Did you think you would get a new dog after Sparky?

10:47 AM
Blogger The Blue Devil said...

So, the Foxes go in 2-0 up - quite pleased with that. I'm off for a shower. Back in a bit.

10:48 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

He's an eleven year old male. Looks mean , so might be a good watch dog, but actually a gentle giant.

10:48 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I did think we would get another dog , but not this soon. Elizabeth kept pestering me to get a new dog. Even though I didn't think I'd want another dog I'm fine with it now that we have him. Glad he's similar in personality to Sparky

Bob, I was watching a video of a Wolves fan's vlog of the Leeds match. It was a guy and girl....they were so impressed with the Leeds fans...best of the season! The Leeds fans had the entire lower tier of the stand that took up the entire length of the field

10:56 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Dave will be going for Saints because Ralph is dressed for the occasion and Pep isn't. Sound right?

10:58 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Let's hope that Southampton and Palace can meet each other in a semi final as in 76.... shame United and Derby won't be the other one!

10:58 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Thanks, Dave.

10:58 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed, Dave. That semi was the year before I moved to England. I think Palace were managed by Malcolm Allison of Division Three and Saints were in Division Two

11:00 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

You're right David
Do you know who their star player was?

United beat reigning League Champs Derby in the other semi...David knows who scored a brace for United.... don't answer...Bob...do you know?

11:01 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

A question for Bob and Dave. would Bob have been better off with the Toffees being on a cup run as it would be needed distraction in the relegation battle, or would it be confidence inspiring in the fight against relegation?

11:02 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I think Palace's star player was Peter Osgood, formerly of Chelsea. Am I correct? For Saints I was thinking Mick Channon

11:03 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Correct , I know the answer to the United question

11:03 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The second half is underway from the KP

11:04 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Good question David... I say knock them down a peg! Knowing the modern day manager...they would put out a reserve team for a semi final!!

David, do you know the answer to the first question...you're allowed to answer that one

11:04 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

The Semi dar being made at 1:30 PM. IS that correct?

11:04 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Oooh...you just answered it.
No, Peter Osgood was on the Saints

11:04 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Channon was a Saint as well

11:05 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Yes. I went with Peter Osgood for Palace and Mick Channon for Saints for the first question

11:05 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I knew Osgood was a star , but I think by 1976 he was near the end of his career and inconsistent. Does that sound about right?

11:06 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Osgood was on Southampton not Palace

11:06 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Palace's star player was Peter Taylor. All left footed!
Went to Spurs after
What claim to fame does Taylor have on the international front?

11:08 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Rangers were trailing rock bottom Crocodile Dundee at the half , but came from behind to win 1-2 . Rangers three points behind Celtic

11:08 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I remember Peter Taylor and he was a star for a short time.I think his claim is that he was capped by England while playing in the Third Division. Also managed England for one match

11:09 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Aaron Ramsey scored Rangers' first goal...his first for the club after joining them on loan

I'm surprised a Prem team didn't pick him up

11:09 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I think Peter Taylor never was as much a star at Spurs as expected. Didn't he retire early due to injury?

11:10 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I didn't know about that about being capped as a 3rd D player

What I was talking about was what you said about being England manager for one game....he was the one that made Beckham captain

11:11 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH! Off the post by Adam Armstrong off a nice through ball driven in by Alpha Romeu.. Should have scored with just the keeper to beat, but miss hit

11:11 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I think you're right

He was crazy during that Cup run for Palace

11:11 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Bugger...Sterling gives City the lead

11:12 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

GOAL! STERLING G GIVES CITEH THE LEAD

11:12 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Good save by Schmeichel from a close range header

11:12 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH! KAPSER DOES WELL TO RTIP OVER A HEADER FROM PONTUS OFF A SHORT FREE KICK

11:13 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Terrible mistake by the Saints defender!

It was also not that good of a finish by Sterling...the deflection took it pas the keeper

11:13 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Citeh gifted that goal. Nice build up, but a really poor clearance by jack Stephens to Jesus and he passed to Sterling for a really easy goal

11:15 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Did you see Klopp whining about having 5 subs again! He pointed out that he doesn't know how many Burnley players will go off on international duty...it's not fair!

What a bunch of rubbish....only reason you have all your players going off to play for their countries is because they are better players!!

Have worse players and they can stay at the Liverpool training camp...does that make you happy!

I used to like Klopp but he does too much complaining

11:15 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

So, it looks like the top three of the Prem will make up 3/4 of the Cup Semis.... Palace for the Cup!!

11:16 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I just Wikied Peter Taylor. The one born in 1953, not 1928. He went to Spurs the following September. He won all four caps with Palace. Scored in his first two international appearances. That feat wasn't matched until Rickie Lambert did that in 2013

11:18 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

OH! Great close range reflex save by Kasper off a close range header from Bryan Mbuembo

11:18 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Also , I think the only other Third Division player after Taylor to be capped by England after Taylor was Steve Bull with Wolves or were they in the Second Division at that time?

11:20 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

I remember he was the Bees Knees back then....then faded
As you said....injuries

11:20 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Wasn't Bull even lower than that?

11:21 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Agreed, Dave. If Palace win the Cup then I believe that sixth place would be a Conference League spot and seventh place would not qualify at all for Europe

11:22 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Jonny Evans on for Timmy Castegne. The Brodge already shutting up shop?

11:22 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

I think Bull played two seasons in the Fourth Division with Wolves, but I think that was before the England caps

11:23 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Was Bull in the 1990 WC squad . he would have been as a Second Division player

11:23 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

Armstrong with another attempt.... rubbish try!

11:24 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Dave how were the crumpets?

11:24 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Armstrong sliced it with the outside of the foot. Horribly miss hit as was the shot off the post

11:25 AM

I thought he was called up being in the lower leagues

I guess I'm wrong

Name the five teams that have won all four divisions in English Football

11:31 AM
Blogger manunitedrules said...

Just Wicked Steve Bull . Scored on his international debut against the Auld enemy at the end of Wolves Promotion Winning season from Division Three in May 1989. He played four times in Italia 1990, three as a sub. His last cap was in October 1990 and the last player to be capped as a Third Division player by England. Only four other post war players have been capped by England a s a Third Division player

11:33 AM

Pompey did it as well

Incorrect

Who scored a brace for United in the 76 Semi vs Derby?

No for Huddersfield

I'm assuming that it's a team that won the First Division back in the early 20th century and have been pants ever since, so how about Sheffield Wednesday?

11:44 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

The other two are Preston and Sheff United

11:45 AM

I guess other the other teams won the Fourth division before the third. Then that makes sense
