An Odd Saturday
For those of us who were raised on a full slate of matches at 3pm on a Saturday, a weekend like this is more than a bit odd. Only two matches on today, starting with Arsenal trip to Villa at 8:30am. Then one FA Cup 5th Round match between Boro and Chelsea at 1:15pm. So, if you've got some weekend errands to do, now's the time.
Join me for whatever is on, eh?

Morning, chaps! Neither of the sides want to be here this morning. Mikel Arteta complained bitterly after Wednesday's loss that they had to play this one today.
Meanwhile, Stevie G. thinks that Villa deserve to be playing in the FA Cup this weekend. Ah well....
Good Morning, Bob. Here to join you for the two matches today.
I might go out and do somethings. I thought it would be a dreary day, but looks like it will be decent outside.
Morning Boys!
Still buzzing Bob?
Becky is back and used your line this morning.... Marsch Madness...did you patent it?
I will be in and out too.
Teams news out of Villa Park this morning:
Aston Villa: Martinez, Cash, Konsa, Mings, Young, McGinn, Douglas Luiz, Ramsey, Buendia, Watkins, Coutinho. Subs: Sanson, Traore, Chambers, Ings, Olsen, Bailey, Chukwuemeka, Iroegbunam, O’Reilly.
Arsenal: Leno, Cedric, White, Gabriel, Tierney, Odegaard, Partey, Xhaka, Saka, Lacazette, Smith Rowe. Subs: Holding, Pepe, Tavares, Sambi Lokonga, Elneny, Nketiah, Okonkwo, Swanson, Hutchinson.
Referee: Andrew Madley.
Ramsdale with a muscle injury...is that to keep him from going on England duty?
Nice to know nobody wants to play. Not sure about Stevie G's excuse . If they went out of the cup then this is the match on the schedule
Of course, I am in the Villa camp this morning.
United need help! Even though they don't deserve fourth, they need fourth
Good Morning, Dave.
I hate all the rest crap
I'm guessing Ramsdale would be out. Southgate will probably give chances to new players since England are playing friendlies are being played on this break
They're off from Villa Park
Morning, boys - great to have you on board. We're away at Villa Park.
Talking about rest, I'm guessing that we will be getting three hours of much needed rest between the matches
Walt sent me a video of the Wimbledon/United Cup FA Cup match and said how wimpy the game is today to compared to back then....so much worse
I am still buzzing about that incredible last gasp win yesterday. It's a turning point for us.
In the Championship the Rams vs Coventry and a South Yorkshire derby as the Evil Blades host Barnsley both just kicked off.
Wasn't that the one with Vinnie Jones chopping down every one in sight?
Arsenal should have scored there!
Big chance for Smith-Rowe there. Dug it over the bar.
Emil Smith rowes as shot into Row H as Yash caught out of position off a nice Gunners attack
Then Martinez with a horrible goal kick against his former mates
Don't know about these Arsenal kits - it looks like they're playing in their pjs.
Villa all but safe , so Stevie G needs to keep his team motivated. There are still a fair amount of matches to be played this season
West it was!!
Derby host Coventry right now
I agree, David - Villa don't have a lot to play for at this point. They probably only need one more win for safety but don't really have a chance of pushing for a European place.
Sorry David...missed your Derby comment
Rash wins a Villa free kick just outside the Gunners box
No probs, Dave. Were you too far West?
Tierney heads out the free kick from his Scots international teammate for a Villa corner
Gunners counter off the corner
Come on, the Rams!
It's Partey time as Thnoimas shoots straight at Emi. Counter lead by Smith-Rowe, who sniffed out Odor Guard , who found the Party Guy
I did ask if you were still buzzing!
I had to go pick up pizza during the match. I listened to the match on Sirius in the car. I got the pizza place and Jason stayed in the car. It took a while when in the pizza place and just before I came out I checked my phone.. I couldn't believe it was Desmond. I came out to the car and Jason said that I had missed two goals
I saw the winner
GREAT STUFF
Oh - great save from Emi Martinez - nearly an o.g.!
Mings was given Mercy by his goalkeeper, who mad ea great save to prevent an OG for a Gunners corner
Bob, An Evil Blades win vs Barnsley and a Rams win would be the perfect combination for Wazza today
I'm not sure, so help would be appreciated. I think Scotland and Poland automatically advanced to their playoff finals as they were given forfeit wins vs Ukraine and Russia respectively. Am I correct?
Did Scotland get a forfeit? Has something new been announced? Last I heard was that the Scotland/Ukraine match was being delayed until June
Poland did get the bye into the Final
It was a marvelous match - I'm so glad that it was televised on USA because I got to DVR it. I save the ones that we win to watch again in the summer.
Oh - I thought that was going to go in off Smith-Rowe's knee. Villa are rocking.
It has been postponed until June. The winner will take on the winner of Austria/Wales. Their match will go ahead
Great job Bob....you'll just have to watch the second half...forget the first!
You guys know better than me...what's the deal with the US and qualifiers? I think one of them is on the Cock!
What is the schedule? What does the US need?
Some big qualification matches coming up for the USA team this week as well, including a big trip to the Azteca on Thursday night.
Great minds think alike
Please inform me
Thanks for the update, Dave. I'm guessing the match will still be at Hampden Park. I just checked and Poland hosting the Swedes or Czechs in the final
I just checked. The match Thursday from the Azteca is on really late at 10 PM on CBSSN, so it's on the telly. I should be around for that.
Right now, Arsenal are two points ahead of United with only one game in hand. They used to have a bigger lead!
I don't have CBSSN.
When are the other games?
What do the US need?
I just saw that all the Oceana WC qualifying matches are being played in Qatar. I guess that makes sense. I think the winner plays the fourth placed CONCACAF team in June , also in Qatar, so I guess it makes sense
I'm checking Dave. I know three matches remain to be played.
We really need Forest to beat Liverpool and the Saints to beat City tomorrow!!
Want all talk of Quadruples and Trebles ended ASAP
Coventry take the lead at Pride Park
Dave you can watch the Thursday match on Paramount + since you don't have CBSSN. U.S. host Panama Sunday with kickoff at 7 PM. That match is on FS 1 On Wednesday the 30th U. away to Costa Rica with kickoff at 8:05 PM. Not sure who is televising that
Saka gives the Gunners the lead
GOAL! SAKA GIVES THE GUNNERS THE LEAD. DID THAT GO UNDER MARTINEZ'S HAND?
Nice build up that started off a short Free kick between Saka and Cedric the Entertainer.
I think the CR match is on the Cock
What do the US need?
Struth... The Gazette pushed over after a foul
All these players are such wimps!!
I think a win and a draw vs Panama and CR with a loss in the Azteca ia enough to send the U.S. through based on my checks
His foot was on the ground the whole time. I dont' think that should have been a yellow! It is the reaction that makes things worse
I agree with Jim Beglin. That was a fair tackle by Mings the Merciless on Saka . I would have been booked ten times a match under today's rules
Rash escorts Saka off the pitch. If he's really injured then he should need a good while to get treatment
Gunners now fourth, FOUR points ahead off United
The two Dave's will want the Spuds vs Hammers to be a draw tomorrow.
Rams half a dozen points from safety as that's the gap between Wazza and Ince. Ince's lads host Blackburn at 11 PM.
I want a draw or a Hammers win...Spurs have too many games in hand on United and hopefully the Hammers will have the EL on their minds
Gunners ahead 15-0 with touches in the opposing box. Thattyells you who has done all the attacking and its' the away side
Cedric the Entertainer clears for a Villa corner
I'm back with my brekkies - apple coffee cake, cheesy eggs and fruit salad.
Modern day corner by Villa. Doesn't beat the first man
Corner from Dod Lewis headed away at the near post then cleared away
I have had a cup of coffee , but not brekkies yet.
What do you all think about what the U.S. needs ? Do my calculations sound accurate? U.S. plays the teams currently in third, fourth, and fifth place in their remaining matches. One at home and two on the road. The home match pretty much a must win
I was counting on you to tell me
At 9:03 I posted basically a win, a draw, and a loss. That should be enough for the U.S. to qualify, so four points.
Into an LOB blogging trio of stoppage time minutes
Tierney down as Matty Cashed in to a tackle. Now the talk of foul and fair. It looked fair
It's 0-0 at the half at Bramall Lane
I agree, David - four points necessary from the last two matches. Anything the US get at the Azteca is gravy. Hopefully we rattled Raul Jimenez a bit yesterday.
Coventry one up at the half at Pride Park
Gunners one up at the half
Half-time at Villa Park - Arsenal 0-1 up. I think they're good for that lead.
Sadly , Jimenez availbvale for the match vs the U.S. I wish he was suspended for that too
Arsenal four points ahead of United now with a match in hand. You lot really need Arsenal to lose this one.
Looking up, Arsenal still five points off Chelsea - I can't really see them reaching them.
We're off again at Villa Park in the second half.
The bright sunshine is really making it difficult to watch this match now.
I am back from the store
Smith-Rowe with a pop on goal from the corner. Martinez gathered.
I'm surprised that Stevie G. didn't change things - Villa weren't really in that first half.
They didn't do anything according the radio...not a thing!
Odegaard pulls the trigger and it's blocked off for another corner. All Arsenal pressure now.
Oh - nice ball in from Coutinho there and Gabriel had to concede a corner with Watkins threatening.
Oh - Saka had a chance to play one of his mates in but he got greedy.
I wonder who's on a bigger salary - Matty Cash or Cashley Young?
Stevie G. looks very dapper this morning, with a zip up over shirt and tie. I wonder if he's planning some changes right now.
Shame about Bamford yesterday, they said it happened with the long pass that he went off afterwards but he was hurting before that and no one said anything about it
Watch it again, he is hurt before that
Oh - McGinn flashes a drive just wide of the far post.
Is Stevie G having his team play like this just to stick it to United!
Great run by a Derby man....hopeless cross...Rams get a pen...very soft in my book
Villa just starting to creep back into the match.
Captain Lawrence to take the spot kick...up he comes...1-1
Derby looking to come back from being down to win a match for the first time this season
According to the Jess Marsch interview after the match, Lord Bamford was hurting before both the Norwich and Wolves matches. He may be able to recover for the Southampton match in a couple of weeke.
Back after walkies with the old dog. New one hasn't arrived yet
Blades beating Barnsley 1-0 which is good for Waza as well
That's good
Did you notice him hurt way before he went off?
Douglas Luiz with a free kick well off the mark.
Cantona
Evil Blades one ump vs Barnsley and now fourth place five points from automatic promotion. That's good news for the Rams who are five points from safety behind Ince's lads
Coventry with a big chance.... blazed over off a break
It was hard to keep up with all of the players that were limping around. I didn't think that it was a dirty match but there was certainly a body count!
I lost out. The new one will be Chester, which is short for MANchester United
Villa finally causing problems...Watkins hits the post
Oh - off the post from Watkins. Deflection off Smith-Rowe.
Olly Watkins Rowes a shot off Emil Smith and the post as it goes out for a Villa corner
A chorus of Boos for the Gunners Saka player is he's replaced by Pepe. He did score.
What a shame....every time you introduce the dog...use the full name
"Manchester United.....Chester for short"
Goalscorer Bukayo Saka is replaced by Pepe.
It's ridiculous that he's joint top scorer with Smith-Rowe. Arsenal need to get a striker who can score them 20 goals+ a season.
If you do that...the girls might cave
Bernie Traore for Ramsey and the Old Bailey for Buendia as Stevie G made a double change
Cashley goes down in the box - nothing doing.
LOL, Dave! That's a good tactic
Bob you were criticized in La Cazette for mentioning the Gunners need for a striker. The headline read Non Plus, Bob!
Are we going to have to deal with TT saying MiddlesBORO all match today!
Someone please tell him it is Boro or MiddlesBROUGH
I still like the sound of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbark.
The announcer mentioned that Martinelli got called up for the full Brazi squad for the first time
Arsenal trying to kill off the match now.
Blades two up
LOL, Bob! That's a hilarious name.
Agreed, Dave. Not looking forward to listening to TT this afternoon. Hope they have different announcers
That's great news for the Rams even thought eh Evil Blades are up to fourth place and the in form team in the playoffs
I know that's good for Derby but I still don't like it.
The Gazette always comes off...don't get it
Boos by Villa fans. Not sure why but read in LA Cazette that bringing Eddie on took too long.
If today is unusually quiet then tomorrow makes up for that by being unusually busy heading into the International Break
In L2 Jayne Mansfield v Stevenage postponed due to a COVID outbreak in the Stevenage squad
The final roll of the dice from Stevie G and like for like as Danny Ings on for Olly Watkins. Why not bring on an extra striker being a goal down with ten minutes remaining
Danny Ings about to be thrown into the mixer for Ollie Watkins, who was firing blanks today.
I'm guessing that Bob and Dave would agree that Jayne cannot be on top of Stevenage due to the circumstances involved
Nice cross by John McGinn and the header from Danny Ings is inches over and he nearly tied it up
You know that I think that teams should be forced to forfeit matches.
Derby have one minute of the 90 and 3 more to get a winner
The final roll of the dice as Arteta shuts up shop . Rob brought on for the Gunners who are Holding on for Odor Guard as Arteta "smells" victory within his grasp
Bob, if that is true then Jayne won't have a chance to go on top during the make-up match. Sorry if that's in bad taste
This match hasn't got anything on the thrill-fest from yesterday - I'm dozing off now and again.
Dave will be pleased as there won't be any stoppage time substitutions in this match
Rams hit the post
More coffee, Bob, or you can nap in between matches,. LOL!
BUGGER! That's a shame .
KEEP IT UP, RAMS!
Both managers in the match at Pride Park are former United managers
Villa giving it a go here. Arsenal just about hanging on.
Useless corner by Villa
Why would Arteta complain about playing Wed/Sat
They are such wusses!!!
I'm off caffeine altogether, mate - that's my problem.
All over at Pride Park
1-1
Stevie G. seems a glum chappy today.
Bit of a scramble in the box in stoppage time. But cleared out. And that should be about it.
Last chance for Villa
I heard an Arsenal fan complaining about the Europa League schedules in previous years, which he blamed for Arsenal's poor form.
"Have to play on Thursday and then on Sunday."
Robbie Savage asked him, "what's the difference with that and playing Wednesday and Saturday?" Exactly!
Back for the final seconds. Having the repairman check the washing machine
Lsat ditch free kick that Leno parries away and that's it - the Gunners have held on to win it.
Not a great result for you lot - you're four points off Arsenal now, with a game more played.
Mings acting like an idiot in the box with the Arsenal men
Saved....and that is it
Bugger for United
Congrats for Steve
I'm off to the stores
Talk to you later
It's over and the Gunners win 0-1 at Villa Park and are four points ahead of United
I'm off for a shower now to wakey wakey. Not sure whether I'll be around for the Cup match later on.
Evil Blades defeated Barnsley 2-0
I will try to be around for the Cup matches. Catch you later if any of you are around
The Boro v. Chelsea FA Cup 5th Round match is about to start. Here are the teams:
Middlesbrough: Lumley, Anfernee Dijksteel, McNair, Fry, Jones, Crooks, Howson, Tavernier, Taylor, Balogun, Connolly. Subs: Hall, Olusanya, Peltier, Watmore, Bamba, Bola, Daniels, Coburn, Boyd-Munce.
Chelsea: Mendy, Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva, Rudiger, Loftus-Cheek, Kovacic, Mount, Sarr, Ziyech, Pulisic, Lukaku. Subs: Alonso, Kante, Werner, Bettinelli, Chalobah, Barkley, Kenedy, Havertz, Vale.
Referee: Paul Tierney.
I'll be in and out of this one as I'm trying to book my flight and hotel for a conference trip to San Diego next month.
Back for the Cup time after spending some time by the lake
Wishing well with your trip to San Diego
They're off from the Riverside
WOW! Champ says that it's 54 degrees at kickoff . Not bad for Teeside at teatime in March. Almost as warm as here
GOAL !THE CHUNK GIVES CHELSEA THE LEAD WITH A MOVE THAT STARTED IN THEIR OWN HALF. CHELSEA PASSED ABOUYT AT THE BACK THEN ZIYECH SET MOUNT FREE DOWN THE RIGHT AND THE MOUNTED PASS WAS DIVERTED IN FROM CLOSE RANGE BY THE CHUNK AS HE GOT BEHIND THE TESSIDERS DEFENSE
GOAL !!!! ZIYECH PUTS CHELSEA TWO UP
Again, this one started from the backhand the high pressing Teesiders nearly forced Chelsea to cough up possession deep in their own half. A pass cleared the Teesiders then on the counter Kovacic found Mount and his pass wide right to Ziyech found him about 25 yards from goal. He cut in then knuckle balled a shot ion the corner that fooled Lumley oil the Teesiders goal
Hiya, David - it looks like Chelsea are cruising it coming up on half time.
It's over at the Riverside and Chelsea is the first side in the semis as they win 0-2
Hello, Bob. great chatting, Bob and Dave. Loom forward to chatting tomorrow . Enjoy the rest of the day.
CHEERS!
