Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

France vs. Korea

This really should be the best match of the day. Les Bleus have it all to do after boring everyone to death against the Swiss. The Koreans looked to be a hard fighting side that won't be easily turned over and could easily end up topping the group and setting up a cross-Pyreneean match-up with France and Spain for the Round of Sixteen. Will it be escargot or kimchee or the menu today? Watch and see with me, won't you?

Anthems are playing. You know, if the French side can't get up for this match after listening to the Marseillais, they might as well go back into the dressing room. That ditty would stiffen the spine of a corpse.

The French may have an immigrant problem, but it's clear they've got no problem playing a group of them. I reckon that nine of the eleven starters are of immigrant stock.

Blimey, do not adjust your sets. The Korean kit really is that shade of red. I feel like I'm going to have a seizure looking at it!

GOAL: 1-0 France; Who else - TH-14! The French scoring drought is officially over now. That'll relieve the pressure. They've looked much more sprightly coming forward down the right through Malouda and Wiltord of Lyons.

Nice shot of LA's Staples Center, which has been opened up today to what seems like the entire Koreatown neighborhood. Wow!

Vieira nearly scores a headed goal. I reckon that the commentators are correct that that ball crossed the line. Should be 2-0.

Half-time: France 1-0; Much better performance from the French. I really like this kid Malouda, although I also thought Ribery was good the other day. Shame that they can't find room for both of them in the side. Again, I might stick Trez in about the 60th minute for Wiltord. They still could use a little heading power in the box. A lot of balls come winging into the middle for no one.

Have Korea been in the game at al?

Alan Hansen doesn't think they have

No, I don't think Korea have been impressive at all. Your boy Park has been particularly anonymous. I thought he might be a star of this World Cup.

Ribery has come in for Wiltord. What's up with Trez - did he kick Domenech's dog?

4:21 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yes, a bit better, but still - do you expect them to equalize?

Lots of chatter on the Internet today about the England side for Sweden. Apparently Sven will rest Crouch and Gerrard, who are both on yellows and will start Roon alongside Owen. Your thoughts?

GOAL: 1-1; Dear oh dear, France have allowed Korea back into the game. A bit of a scrappy goal that trickled over the line. Shouldn't Gallas have hoofed that away?

Man UTD player scores again. That is three I guess that have scored. Sung, Ronaldo and Ruud.
How many Leeds players?

What a shot by Patrick

That really puts the French under pressure. Two points from two games really isn't good enough. You would expect Togo to make a game of it against the former colonial hosts and now Korea are in pole position to win the group and avoid Spain. France vs. Spain in the second round? You'd have to fancy the Spanish on this form.

Er, there's only Eddie Lewis in the competition that I can think of and he didn't even get a game last night.

I still think France will qualify. Korea will probably win the group. France would play Spain

The Spanish can't be happy with this result. They'd love an easy game with Togo.

Full-time: 1-1; Disappointing in the end for Les Bleus. Domenech looks gob-smacked. They must have thought that they had that one sewn up, but the plucky Koreans kept going. As you say, Korea will now top the group and France may even struggle to place second and then will face Spain. Tough one.

bob, best pic yet. inspired.

david nocito-van persie, rosicky twice, ljungberg, henry. 4-3 to the arsenal, 4-3 to the arsenal, 4-3 to the arsenal, (repeat until davey-boy's head explodes)

complete shambles again from the french. after starting well, they proceeded to dominate the possession only to allow korea the jammiest of equalizers. yes, undoubtedly gallas should have hoofed that off the line. right before thuram should have cleared it up field. right before patrick should have intercepted with a header. what a shambles.

france are now going to be without zidane-good because he's so past it, and the kid on the left wing-bad, because he's actually a spark. ribery reminds me of van persie in that it's all good until the final effort on goal. but he's one for the future. malouda was great and very unlucky. paddy should start searching his gas-filled flat to see if the burglars left some sort of voodoo paddy doll. how can one man be so perpetually unlucky? denied a clearly over the line goal and at fault for dodgy defending on the korean's goal.

i am in love with the korean crowd. what a glorious racket they make for two and a half hours. it must lift the team. fantastic.

france in 98-manifique. france in '00-fantastique. france in '02-pathetique. france in '04-antique?

Actually I had a choice of about twelve different "Anguished French Fan" photos. It definitely says something that every photo of the Brazilian fans features either a samba line or a tasty bird falling out of her top and every shot of the French crowd has someone crying. Sartre no doubt have an explanation for that.
