Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Morning, mate. I've barely gotten over yesterday's matches - three matches is just about too much footie to absorb - and here we've got another day of cracking stuff. I've really been looking forward to this one, because it may be the key to the Group of Death. The Dutch could be worse than we imagined and the Serbs could be stronger, or the opposite of that. I have absolutely no idea how this will play out. Enjoy!

Good goal from Robben. I really don't know why so many of these teams are defending such a high line. The referees are definitely giving the attacking sides the benefit of the doubt and they're getting killed on these through balls.

Your boy Van Pursie's having a blinder. Lovely through ball for the first goal. In and about the box with nice balls and a header on target a moment ago.

Still, these Serbs aren't half bad. Savo and Kejman look capable of scoring. This one's poised nicely. I'm loving it!

Half time - Dutch up 1-0 and good for the lead. Robben is the key. Every time the Dutch get the ball on the right side, they're firing long diagonals over to him. One touch and he's at the Serb right back. The balls into the box aren't always finding their men. They really need to make sure that they're following up with men running into the box. Snejder doesn't look fully fit to me and they miss Van der Vaart.

this is pretty good but again the starting time is affecting the play. there are huge gaps of time when everyone's walking around.

i know that the serbs think that maintaining defensive discipline is the key to beating holland. i have to think that someone's got to close down robben, obviously, and sjneider who for me is having a great game.

van horsey-face is a bit off, but he might be dealing with heavy attention from a couple of serbs. van persie is having a good game. i really hope that he gets another chance to prove that he is the best foil for henry that afc have on the books. were it not for that nuicance rape allegation, i think he'd have been in the frame of mind to have proved it last season.

Koroman is a breath of fresh air for the serbs.

and it's bit cheeky to have a kraut, merkk, as the ref in this one.

gary lineker made an interesting point about the difference between holland in the heat, and england in the heat.

he thinks that the difference is that holland has the technique right through the squad to hold the ball and to pass the ball accurately when they start to get a bit tired.

and hanson makes the point that as good as the dutch first 11 is, they don't have a huge depth of talent in reserve.

it's back and koroman is doing well again. and the serbs are also going for it in the form of some boy that's 6 foot 8!

I still can't believe the time and heat play that big a factor. I mean, it's a 9 a.m. kick off here, meaning that it's 2 p.m. where you are and 3 p.m. in Germany, right? Isn't that the established time? I'd buy it if it were the noon kick-off in Miami back in '94. I really felt for those pasty Irishmen back then, but as you said yesterday, these are fit athletes. They really should be able to get through ninety minutes, even if it's a bit warmer than they'd like.

Savo Milosevic must've picked up a knock. I can't believe that they would've taken him off for tactical reasons. He looked reasonably dangerous and had a few chances.

have you noticed that the ref has a yellow whistle that he's carrying in his hand? Everytime they focus the camera on him i think he's given someone a card!

Yeah, everything seems very color coordinated in this World Cup. Check out Robben's orange boots!

Going back to the discussion about England, it almost looked as if the squad had had a big night on the town Friday night, watching Crouchie doing his Robo-dance in the clubs. With English players - and especially led by someone as feckless as Sven - I wouldn't put it past them! Expect photos in the News of the Screws any day now.

Bizarre! Milosevic, Kezman and now Van Horsey all off by the 70th minute. Do either of these sides want to win this thing?

By the way, I wanted to mention, just in case you'd missed my post on the Predictions Game thread, that you'd made a mistake with the brackets. Check out that thread and change your predictions for the quarters, semis and finals. Cheers!

Well, this didn't turn out to be as competitive as I'd thought at the half. Very disappointed in the negativity of the Serbs in the second half. It was there's for the picking. Taking both center forwards off was a mistake. The Dutch were well organized and have a few of what ESPN is calling "Impact Players" in Robben, Van Persie and Van Bommel. But they're no world beaters on this evidence. We'll have to see what happens when they see the Argies.

The sporadic blogging worked like a charm. I hope the others will join in for the next match. I don't know where they all are - church?

Good to hear from you, mate. Park those kiddies in front of the telly and get ready for Mexico-Iran, eh?

Remember the pick-up games after watching a day's WC matches, with all of us wanting to be Rivelinho and Cruyff? Magic stuff.
