Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Mexico vs. Iran

The lunch-time match today is a fascinating one from Group D - Mexico and Iran. This is the stuff that makes the World Cup the greatest tournament on earth. We all know the Mexican side with the exciting Jared Borghetti up front, but what about Iran? In '98 they humiliated the U.S. - what about the current side? Join me for a spot of light blogging, won't you?

Dave's right. The Univision pre-game coverage is brill. You get the tension of the teams in the tunnel. The anthems are key. And just the cultural details are amazing - the Iranian pennant, for example, is a huge framed Persian rug! How can ABC miss out of all of this pageantry.

I loved that Persian rug instead of a pennant.

I predict that Mexico will settle and rule this game in the end. Borghetti and Franco up front are pretty awesome.

Still, the Iranians are no mugs though I wonder about the decision to go with Ali Dei again at, what? 39? As old as the ayatollah that guy.

I'm having a tough time sorting this one out. I don't really like either team. I have a grudging respect for the Mexicans. Marquez is obviously a world class defender and I like the classic center forward stance that Borgetti represents. But I don't know much about Iran - we'll see.

So far, this has run to form. Mexico look more professional in every department.

Observations? Mexico have started with 5 out and out defenders, salcido, marquez, osorio, pineda, and mendez. add torrado and you have the equivalent of a bus driven into the goalmouth.

And how did they score? Set-piece. you have to wonder what they fear in iran.

Nice to see that thug marquez getting a little attention every time he's on the ball. knock him down every time, i say. feckin' criminal he is.

I reckon the Bolton experience has rubbed off on Borgetti. They scored off a set piece that Big Sam would've approved of.

But, hello, the Iranians are pluckier than I would've given them credit for. Almost identical goal for the equalizer. This smells like a Coca Cola Championship match.

1-1 at half-time. Looks like the Mexicans are making some changes at the half. What do you reckon will come out of this match - I'm predicting a draw. They're evenly matched.

Borgetti's coming out now. I'm not getting this trend at this WC. It's one thing to have wee Mikey off at the 60th minute when he's not fully fit, but what's the story with Borgetti. Now, Mexico have no more subs for the rest of the match. What if the keeper does a hamstring - is Pardo gonna slip the jersey on?

Welcome, Stevie! I agree - this one's gotten really stale. The Group of Death big boys must really be licking their lips while watching this. If they can top Group C, they're likely to get one of these teams in the Second Round. That is, unless Angola prove better than I expect.

What did you make of the earlier match? Did you watch the Dutch?

Well, that seems to be the way it panned out. Two spectacular cock-ups by the Iranian keeper and center back and suddenly Mexico could get three points without exerting too much effort today.

Mexico 2-1.

Not too late at all. Post them when you catch your breath. This game's suddenly come to life. Great header! 3-1.

Got your predictions for the first round? What about Round of Sixteen, quarters, semis and final. Also pick a Top Scorer. Thanks for playing.
