Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

MLS All-Star Game!

If the Coke kickoff hasn't slated your thirst for footie today, keep in mind that there is the MLS All-Star game on this evening. Ordinarily this naff exhibition game wouldn't be of much interest, unless you're a huge Chris Albright fan. However, this will be the first chance to see the new look Chelski side as they take on a group of "MLS All-Stars." Jose Mourinho's boys will be without the services of Michael Ballack, who's not fully fit, and William Gallas, who's thrown a wobbly for no apparent reason this summer, but otherwise they should be at full strength with Sheva, Lamps, Cole, Robben and Terry on show. Could be fun. I won't be watching live, but I'll no doubt have some comments after I view the tape later tonight.

You can see it at 6:30 on ESPN.

I forgotten how much I hate Dave O'Brien.
Chelsea's starting line up.
Terry, Lamps, Wright-Phillips, Ballack, Sheva, Drogba.
The ESPN guys say that Chelsea are the New York Yankees. Do you think that is a good comparison? The Yanks have always been compared to United. Do you think Chelsea are the Yankees? I agree they splash the money but Chelsea are more flash in the pan. The ruskie money could end at any moment. What US team could be compared to Chelski

Well, well, well. Veerrry interesting. If I didn't know better, I'd have thought that it was the team in blue that was the rag-tag band of "all-stars" who'd never played before. What a load of shite they were. Someone needs to tell Jose the meaning of the word "exhibition." That was embarrassing, but not in the way that I'd suspected.

If Chelski play the way they did today, they'll have a hard time staying in the Premiership, let alone winning it. They looked absolutely hopeless. Sheva - was he on the pitch? Drogba had barely a sniff. I felt sorry for SWP - he looks a shell of the player he was for Citeh. It was really one-way traffic for the MLS boys and they could easily have won it 2 or 3-0 in the end.

Are Chelski the England Yankees? Clearly not - that role of hated megabuck team has always suited ManYoo. Chelski are more flash in the pan and I think we've now seen the beginning of the inevitable decline. They started with a ridiculous formation - three at the back, two holding mids, something of a diamond, but really Ballack and Lamps stepping on each other and Sheva and Drogba up front looking as if they'd just met. Ain't gonna work and I'm loving it. The sooner the Chelski bubble bursts the better for real football, which has nothing to do with Russian mob money or Tampa Bay Buccaneer money or Emirates Air money. It's about young kids playing on Hackney Marshes and dreaming of the chance to play in the First Division.

I've just written an email to Steven Cohen - the rapid Blue at World Soccer Daily - about the MLS Allstar Game:

"Peter Osgood.....Butch Wilkins.....Chopper Harris.....your boys took a hell of a beating today....a hell of a beating!"

Nice one Bob!

Melanie and I went out for a nice dinner on M & C and we waited in the bar for a table. Guess what's playing on the bar's telly? Yeah man, the flippin' MLS All-Star game!!! In Wilmington. Could civilization be arriving in this benighted country at last?

Holy crap! I just saw on the 365 that Cole is really injured and that Rio and Carrick are nobbled too? Flippin' hell, what's going on?

Cole apparently will be out until Christmas. More bad news for England. Carrick will likely be out for the first two England qualifiers in September. Looks like Owen Hargreaves will step up. With Rooney suspended, Owen nobbled, Becks on the verge of retirement and Lamps out of sorts, it's a depleted squad.

Just heard that Cashley has been left out of the squad for Zagreb. That's a bad sign - perhaps he will be shipped out to Stamford Bridge this week.

Also, Steven Cohen speculated that the Cashley deal may involve some sort of swap for Gallas. The Arse also looking to bring in Franck Ribery for around 16 mill. Good moves, I reckon.

Other transfer speculation today - Carlos Tevez is on his way out of Corinthians with about six clubs hunting him. Sadly, no offer from Ken Bates. (sigh)
