Lakenheath Old Boys

We are all former students at Lakenheath High School and other public schools in East Anglia. We were in school in the 70s and 80s and drank deeply from the well of British culture of those decades - the pints, the telly, and of course the footie!

Another Fascinating Weekend

The Merseyside Derby is still goaless at half.
Arsenal go to the Riverside in the late game.
West Ham are live on FSC in the battle of Claret and Blues.
Leeds hope to build on their midweek win, when they travel to Carrow Road.
United go to White Hart Lane tomorrow.

The big one is, of course, the battle of the Universities. Oxford welcome Cambridge United to the Kassam Stadium.

I will be here for a while before I am off to basketball but will be here for the late game.

Hope for some company until Bob knocks me off.

Ooh, AJ came close to opening the scoring at Anfield.

Name a player that has played in all four divisions in England and has a champions league medal?

They just asked the question on the radio. I have to wait for the answer.

9:11 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

This player has also played non league football

I don't know the answer. It is bugging me.

I now know the answer.
I wouldn't have gotten it but he is in the Prem right now.

I will tell you the answer later.

Full-time at Anfield and it ends goaless.

That surely means Liverpool's slim chances of winning the league has well and truly been squashed!!!!

Did you see those scenes of violence in Italy.
A policeman was killed and all the games in Italy have been postponed. Some interesting quotes coming out of Italy.

'A strong signal was needed until we find measures to prevent certain episodes,' said the FIGC's chief commissioner Luca Pancalli.
He has called an indefinite halt to all matches, including Italy's international friendly against Romania in Siena on Wednesday.
The prospect of a speedy return to the stadiums for fans and players was ruled out by the country's Interior Minister Giuliano Amato.
'In these conditions, I will no longer send my police into the football stadiums,' he was quoted as saying in La Gazzetta dello Sport on Saturday.
Without the police, who are paid a poor overtime rate to keep rival supporters apart, many Italian matches would disintegrate into rowdy brawls.
The president of the Italian Footballers' Association, Sergio Campana called for the leagues to be halted for at least a year. His suggestion - though unlikely to be followed - would at least give Italian clubs the chance to modernise their old-fashioned stadiums to bring them into line with those in other top European leagues.

What does this mean for the Milan teams in the CL?

Blogger gatorbob said...

Morning, Dave! I did see those scenes in Italy. Disgusting. Maybe they'll finally take this opportunity to sort out the game there. I'm not holding my breath. Still, why not ban Italian clubs from Europe for a year or two. That turned things around in England.

Nice trivia question. I'm thinking about it.

Blogger United We Stand said...

What is going on at Forest. They lost midweek and have dropped to fourth and are losing again

10:13 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

I remember it well; it's burned into my psyche. We were in the bootboy end at Carrow Road, Justin Fashanu got sent off and all hell broke lose. I remember the roar of the crowd as they all ran down toward the front of the terrace where we were propped up on those crash bars. "Oi, Jimmy (Rimmer) want a sweetie" and spitting on the copper's jackets. Wild scenes.

10:14 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

What happened at the end of the match?

10:15 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Excellent news for Leeds. Luton are now down in the drop zone. We're bottom but it's starting to tighten up again, with four or five teams within reach. QPR are level on 31 points with Luton fourth bottom.

10:15 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

QPR are winning, NOT good news for Leeds

10:15 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Didn't we get a copper to let us out before the match ended? Or was that another match that my Dad took us too. I don't remember that clearly. Was John Bond sent off?

10:16 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

We did try to get a cop to let us out but he said NO WAY.

Norwich got a last minute penalty and Kevin Bond(not John, he was the manager) scored it right in front of us.

It made everyone behind us happy. If he had missed, we would have been in major trouble

10:18 AM

Burnley has dropped off in form recently.

I understand Sir Trev's confusion. Claret vs. claret traditionally. West Ham are in dark blue, but it is hard to distinguish from distance.

10:20 AM
Blogger United We Stand said...

QPR have been pegged back.

I am off to basketball, Thomas will be here to help with the blog.

Uh oh, all Norwich at C.R. but Leeds are holding on.

10:21 AM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Yeah, that's right. I remember that. I remember that John Bond was the manager and Kevin was the player and son, but I remember that John Bond was a feisty character so I thought he might have been sent to the stands during that match for protesting.

More good news for Leeds. Burnley has equalized.

10:34 AM

Where did Dave bugger off too - more snow shoveling?

Now Southend are trailing. This couldn't look better for us today. We're three points off the bottom now and closing in on QPR and Luton above us. Would be nice for Barnsley and Hull to lose.

10:39 AM

John Carew scores on his debut! He is a handful and a half. I would hate to play against him. Big, strong, and quick. Sorry, Trev.

Yeah, Division 1 is crap apart from the clubs that yo-yo between the divisions like Forest and the Bristol teams. There are plenty like Yeovil Town and Grimsby. It's quite a comedown from playing Lazio in the Champions League a few years ago.

Arsenal: Lehmann, Hoyte, Toure, Senderos, Clichy, Flamini, Fabregas, Silva, Rosicky, Adebayor, Henry

Not a lot of quality yet in this match. Boro are playing a pressing game, but they don't quite have the quality to break the Arse down. Arsenal haven't got their groove on yet.

12:36 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Half-time: Bit a snoozer, to be honest. Boro are packing the defense and have knocked the Arse off their game. I'd like to see a bit more urgency from the likes of TH and Adebayor.

1:14 PM
Blogger gatorbob said...

Full-time: I tuned out after an uninspiring first half and of course all the action that people will be talking about came in the second half. First Mike Riley gives Yakubu a dodgy penalty and sends Senderos off. Then Henry equalizes controversially from a throw out from Jens that may have been slightly outside his box. Lots to chew over after seeing the replay. I'll look forward to Gooner's comments. 1-1.

2:36 PM
Blogger gooner71 said...

I thought that Cesc and Flamini were actually poor, Adebayor did the best he could carrying the injury that he's ailing from, and that the rest of our players looked rather disinterested for large stretches of this match. Aliadiere turned the game around for us and got us the point with good running and inspired TH14 to do his showpiece thing.

Riley is a continuing disgraceful stain on the Premiership and undercuts the standing of English refereeing. He wasn't within 20 yards of the Sendaros incident and had no business deciding that it was a pen. If he'd consulted the linesman, assuming that he was up with play, at least he'd be practicing a little due dilligence, but he didn't appear to and awarded the penalty to Yakubu for the most innocuous of contacts from a position where he'd couldn't possibly make a correct call. And then he turned his back on Lehmann before he could see the hissy fit Jens threw that actually could have seen the silly German sent off. Only when the 'Boro bench bollocked the 4th official was Riley summoned over and you had the "uh-here there Mike mate, you've missed something there with Lehmann" conversation.

Then as Bob points out Mad Jens clearly stepped over the line on his throw-out, after doing the same thing 5 seconds earlier to gather the ball. What's Riley supposed to be looking at ferfecksakes then? That's easily a second yellow and Jens would have been off too. In fact, I think that 'Boro broke down their stalwart defensive work for Henry's well taken goal mostly because they were all going mad that Riley seemed clueless to what had just happened. It's not even as if he just motioned play-on, he just simply wasn't watching.

Riley's a UEFA/FIFA listed ref from England with plenty of previous. The other is Poll who's just as incompetent, possibly more erractic too. How can refereeing standards improve with guys like this that could only possibly have risen to the ranks they have due to politics and not performance? It's just not good enough and sets up an immediate reply to people like me that want to advance inclusion of more varied national teams in international competition, but have referees picked only from leagues where the standard of play is high. I can't legitimately complain when Central America sends out their prissy martinetish schoolmarms, and hold that the continent of Africa's officials should be banned when Poll and Riley continue to be allowed to officiate in a league of the Premiership's standard.

Arsenal looked tired and unglued and possibly a little put off by the mounting casualty list of Hleb, Ljungberg, Diaby, RVP, Eboue, Gallas, Djourou, and Baptista all of whom would have had legitimate shots at inclusion in the starting 11 today. I just hope that anybody still walking makes it back from international duty this week in one piece. I'm disappointed that we didn't win because we're clearly better than 'Boro are. That said, I can't help but think that this one should have been 0-0 because both goals were down to seriously flawed refereeing.
